Sometime after ww2, my great-grandpa was walking through a subway in Tokyo and bought a real wakizashi, now we jest that it's the "family sword," even though our real ones were lost in the Meiji Restorations. It actually had imperfections from blood on it, so I know that a previous owner was not very careful about washing it off after combat, and that it did actually maim someone. It was interesting to get it appraised a few years ago.

Found your video after looking up how to tell if a katana is real. Had an old katana from my grandfather who was in WWII and wanted to see if it might be real or fake. No wave on the blade from the hardening, or anything ornamental. But after doing further research, turns out it's a type 98 Shin-Gunto produced in 1938. Was made in mass for the war and taken as trophies by allied forces during their fight in Japan. Your vid helped me not just give up hope after I saw the pattering of the ray skin like you mentioned and decided to continue looking into it. Thanks for the info!

I watched this video for reference purposes even though I don't even like katanas and think the European longsword design was and is vastly superior. XD
I recently got myself a $157 katana that is made out of T10 tool steel and is differentially hardened. It has a real hamon and the blade is pretty good. Has good crisp lines, good shape and geometry, especially for the price. However, the fittings and the handle are far from best quality. Cheap Chinese katanas can be used as project swords where you can practice your polishing skills on them, maybe re-wrap the handles to learn the art of tsukamaiki, and so on. But you should ALWAYS insect your sword very carefully before you start swinging it at targets. The Chinese like to cut corners big time - not a good thing when we are talking sharp objects.
no fuckn shit my guy the chinese ones are props
Where'd you get it from
source?
@@2miligrams Probably from Dynasty Forge but their price went to 200 now though
AGREED!!!!!!!!!
So many people overlook this. Either they want to make swords/knives or just buy and use them, but very few consider a beautiful in-between - refurb a good starter with problematic fittings. There are so many websites that sell knife blade blanks at various levels of completion for you to subsequently customize. Musha by Musashi are good katanas that just need high quality fittings (tsuba, handle ect). It's a great place to start because there's no forging or stock removal. You're working backwards by working on your finishing skills first. I'm so glad you pointed this out. Many of the blades are made in the same dies on the same production line. They change the steel for marketing (the rawstock price difference between 1060 and 5160 isn't huge).

But you left out a crucial way to know if your katana is really authentic, you'll have to take apart the hilt (which in traditional Japanese swords the hilt is held together by a single bamboo pin, that has a traditional way to remove it)
Carved on the metal of the hilt is the signature of the swordsmith.
(You'll have to read Japanese in order to authenticate it) but be mindful because many copies of famous swords have been made and are also signed.
And the amount of metal extending from the blade into the handle can really help too. Because some cheap ones will have next to nothing meaning they can bend or break right there

Great videos about swords. Ive been wanting a hand made Katana for a long time and I can afford one now but I had no way of knowing what is real quality vs fancy looking junk. They all say high carbon steel, hand made folded steel for $30-$100 ready for attacking water bottles. Then I see similar swords listed for $1500-$3000 and no way to know so the information about Paul Chen was really helpful and I ordered several swords from them. Ive bought so many cheap swords and weapons over the years that $599-$1000 was not that much and something that I could easily sell later. I wish they made more throwing weapons besides the darts.
When trying to determine the quality of a sword, you can also look at where the sword meets the suba. If they couldn't be bothered to guarantee a tight fit with minimal gaps and it jiggles around loser then the girl you lost your virginity to, then you've probably got a fake katana on your hands, or at least a very poorly made one.

You see, I have had my Wakizashi for roughly 5 years now and I have been very satisfied with it's function. I am not a professional, however. Not even a student.
My Edo is solid when I try to pry under it with my thumb, The Rayskin seems legit to me, based on your description, both Tsuba and Saya have held up nicely (some surface markings), the finishing and engravings are firm, never come loose, and not discoloured, the Blade is still quite flawless and cuts clean, though I do maintain the sword by keeping it polished and drying it off, but I've never had to sharpen it yet. I don't go to classes but I have practiced in the yard by myself every other week or so. (maybe not EVERY other) I cut through water bottles (no fedora) and generally just practice movements I watch in tutorials. I could probably use some advice in this regard. =P

Someone breaks into your home..a baseball bat is comical compared the sound the burglar would hear when you draw it out of its sheath 😂
I haven't even made it a minute into the video and I am already subscribing for the Beyond Belief intro. This guy gets it.
I bought a super cheap 40€ katana a couple years ago, it's a reproduction of the Ichigo's sword from Bleach, I bought it just to put it on a shelf in my bedroom, and it's pretty cool, it looks good and it isn't ruined at all, so if you aren't a maniac it's OK to have a fake one

Kenjutsu student here, currently buying my first tamashigiri katana but have had wall hangers in the past, also buying an Iaito at the moment and I can absolutely tell you the type of steel makes a HUGE difference as does the tsukamaki, if it's not done properly it will literally start coming away during use, i'd recommend watching a few videos on how these swords are made as well as seeing how the grips are wrapped, they usually need little paper spacers to stop them unwrapping on the tsuka too, however the cheap ones really don't have this, my iaito I ordered turned out to be a fake and literally started unravelling during use, the hamon is SUCH a big giveaway, if it's too uniform and too perfect, it likely is, they not only acid etch but also wire brush a hamon on to fake blades, same with rayskin, if it looks too uniform it's moulded and fake. The other thing is to note the weight and where it balances, the cheap ones can be rat tail tang (google it) and held in with just a bolt so if the blade is very front heavy that's usually a sign of it, the iron tsuba is also there to balance the blade out. Failing that, go talk to an actual kenjutsu or iaido student or go study it, they'll steer you the right way for a real one, owning a katana is one thing but learning to use it to it's full potential is a totally different ballgame, i'm on the final part of my climb to shodan.
Man now this is a video i was not looking for but i don't regret clicking
I got a katana off amazon, it looked metal but was only a plastic trainer, But when I stabbed my drew foam trainer it went right through. So kids, don't think trainers wont kill someone
katanas were inferior to european swords lol
@@AverageAlien Beascsue they were designed to fight in a very specific way against very specific types of enemies.
@@AverageAlien yes but if you compare the European chainmail with samurai or shogun armor you can see that the samurai armor is more superior
@@AverageAlien Well ofc, if there's a Electronic Product Company that were originated from a 3rd World ofc it gonna receive poorly especially if its fighting with 1st world company.
But the point is, that 3rd world company only made a product that was meant to solved a problem on its own country.
Is it Inferior than the 1st World Product? well ofc, but if it solved what it meant to solve, i call that as a Success.
And that's what Katana basically is, is it romantized too much? well ofc, so does many Legendary European Blade, though it's more popular because Anime, you can blame weebs for that.
My Point is, why you stating the Obvious that was directed to a person with a little chance to encounter your Comment?
I don't see the point, if you comment this on an AMV maybe you can get more Traffic my guy.
@@jeckkosira5614 but then you factor in full/half mail and samurai armor isn't that great. But honestly, a sword should kill and both katanas and European swords did that so who cares.
when a youtuber shows so much respect for other fellow youtubers he owns me as a subscriber! xD i wish more people would show so much respect for others too! you are a good example of a good human being! well done for the way you were raised! clap clap!!!
I didn't expect that you could get a Authentic Handforged Katana for just $300.
I expected the costs to go all the way up to $1000 or more due to the complexity of making it. Nice to see Legitimate companies are making it a average price for a good quality sword.
