    Wow. The female dancer from Boston Ballet has the toy mannerisms down better than anyone I've ever seen. It looks super difficult to incorporate that mechanical unsteadiness without actually being unsteady. Same goes for whoever is in the bear suit. Total control, even in that unwiedly-looking costume. Amazing.

      @argella1300 2 года назад +39

      A big part of that is her stiff arms and hands. They’re not the usual pretty ballet fingers. As for the bear, I know people who’ve worn similar costumes for mascots and theme parks, it’s like wearing a sofa

  • @felicity1877
    @felicity1877 2 года назад +33

    Oh, the toy dances, something I really love to compare again and again all over the Nutcrackers! (;
    It's fascinating that there are exactly these different traditions! Though, it's a pity that you didn't pick the Royal Ballet, as they have the original idea of the toy dances. It's mostly the third one which is done differently. Royal Ballet keeps the tradition of soldier and vivandiere - I really wonder, why it is changed mostly over the world ? Because it's too much wartime related?
    Anyway, the Boston one is the most "appropriate/clean" one. Baryshnikov has the "moore", which is the Russian tradition, still kept at the Mariinsky. I got the idea (when I was watching it done in the Cuba Ballet release) that it was actually inspired from Petrushka - with the Harlequin and Colombine already - or was there a Russian tradition already established, which inspired Stravinsky? Because I also think that he was inspired by The Nutcracker....
    And then, there is Staatsballett Berlin (which is a reconstruction of the costumes and set designs of the 1892 Nutcracker, but differs in the story a bit from the original). It's a clever idea to connect the original back story in The Nutcracker to explain the prince's enchantment (The story of the hard nut, featuring Princess Pirlipat, no actually, here it's kind of the Sugar Plum fairy, as Clara's later identity (;)
    The Bolshoi Ballet uses devil and witch. And apart from that, I don't remember other ideas.
    What I just want to point out, I really would love to stage a Nutcracker, in which it would be Tchaikovsly and his family at Kamenka, his nieces and nephews, and it would be the first family performance of Swan Lake (which is said to have existed as little home made ballet, according to Anna Davydova. I really wonder, if this could work in a special Nutcracker staging.....

    The first sequence they are showing is the one from Boston Ballet, right? Because I think I can see Joy Womack in the background at 1:46 approximately - the one on the far left in the grey Empire dress with the white applications. I thtink it must be her because she really makes all the efforts she can to "put herself out there" and be noticed even when playing a bit part. I remember she was with BB for some time, but only as an "artist" (which is their designation for a corps dancer) - must have been frustrating after having done only principal roles in Russia. (I'm saying this on account of a statement she makes in the trailer to her documentary, that once she'd done any soloist roles, she knew she "could never go back").

    Oh no, not the blackface 🙈 thank you for the documentation though. Every Ballet company nowadays is acting like they're so diverse and inclusive and whitewashing their past, and it's important to keep records of these things.

    • @kerrytakashi12
      @kerrytakashi12 2 года назад +6

      Why are you assuming it was blackface? Look at the clothing of the dancer. The turban is mainly worn in India, Northern Africa, Turkey, Russia as well as some places in Asia. Aside from the far east, all the places mentioned are caucasians. India in particular is caucasoid.
      So no insults were going on in Baryshnikov's ballet.

    • @Kitefel
      @Kitefel 2 года назад +10

      You're right it's not "Black" face. It's "Brown" face. The issue here is that this is obviously a white person in dark makeup meant to represent a different ethnic group. Just because there was no ill intent in their actions and it wasn't specifically meant to be "insulting" doesn't mean that it isn't problematic or offensive.

    • @kerrytakashi12
      @kerrytakashi12 2 года назад

      @@Kitefel The person is representing a doll not a human being. The color could be unpainted wood since it is a doll.
      If you keep finding offense in everything, pretty soon you will be in a mao suit burning books and putting people in education camps for liking Mikhail Baryshnikov's Nutcracker.

    • @Kitefel
      @Kitefel 2 года назад

      @@kerrytakashi12 So first you admitted that the dancer was meant to represent a particular culture based on his costume, and now you're back-pedaling to this absurd excuse that he's actually meant to be made of wood. That's a ridiculous assertion and you know it. Especially because the entire second act of the Nutcracker is famous for its representation of different cultures based on their costumes, and it has a history of depicting brown face and yellow face. It's pretty clear that the one who is offended here is you, offended that anyone would suggest any malintent in Baryshnikov's work which you seem to admire so much, to the point that you will distort reality just to excuse blatant racist actions.
      Also if you'd bother to read my original comment in good faith, you'd see that I specifically said that it was important to document these kinds of things, not "burn" them. It's ironic that you're caricaturing ME as a Nazi when you're the one bending over backwards to defend an obvious act of racism.
      But to be clear. I'm not saying Baryshnikov himself is racist. Just that doing brown face is racist and bad.

      And take the divertissement as SWEETS not nations. And use real dark-skinned dancers if they employ some for the Arapchata - as far as i know it's nothing offensive for a black dancer to put on some bright silky costume and make a festive dance. Turn it into a place for them in the world of classical ballet where allow them to use their culture to design the costumes, to show off with curly hairstyles, there definitely must be some colourful turbans, some braids and some African ornaments, etc. xix century Russians found them fun and amusing, nothing of second sort or woth hate. They tended to work as amusers (if later times considered - PAID ones)at different events, and made the classical composers feel happy, so that's why they were putting them in balleys

      @@keyaunna. the mouse king isn't blackface (you can make it obviously gray!). Moreover, when they stage Evil Rats (not only in nutcracker) they often draw parallels (inobvious ones) to nazi and that works perfectly if the simularitirs are humble enough. Nazi grey clearly isn't black, and "as bad as nazi" isn't racially offensive.
      Arapchata and the Mavr doll are blackface traditionally... It's the only way to portray blacks when the troupe has fair skin. If you have black dancers - you don't need to fake them anymore.

    Бостонский вариант более...модернистский? Какой-то больше театральный и хорого справляется с тем чтоб публику развлечь(это не плохо). Барышников ну это одна эстетика, а Берлинская больше традиционная и техничная и еще с драмой. Все вариации хороши👏

    The BEAR dancing. Once upon a time I was in community theater and had to walk across the stage in a bear costume. THIS WAS NOT EASY. There was tripping and bumping into people and scenery. So please believe me when I exclaim: The dancer in the bear costume is BETTER than Baryshnikov.

    Барышников это искусство. А некоторые моменты в бостонском варианте балета больше похожи на спортивную гимнастику, извините.

    Лучше Щелкунчика Григоровича нет ни одной постановки. Итак, как танцевали Васильев и Максимова, никто не станцует, разве только Цискаридзе и Воронцова. Наши - лучшие!!!!

      Посмотрите постановку сэра Питера Райта. Но. похоже, у вас патриотические шоры на глазах. Я давно не считаю "наших" лучшими. Мир балета велик и многообразен- и хорошо, что "Щелкунчик" живет и развивается. Тем более, что в данном ролике сравниваются разные версии определенной сцены с игрушками, а вы почему-то выкрикиваете имена солистов, которые в ней не участвуют. Как-то нелогично.

      В этом году у нас в Новате (Новосибирск) Щелкунчик постановка Григоровича, перед новым годом билеты сразу все раскупили, из Москвы даже приезжали посмотреть, очень хвалили. Я ещё не смотрела, пойдём всей семьёй в феврале.

    В Бостоне, Щелкунчика, я бы пропустил. Движения слишком вычурные, резкие. На сцене танцуют не реп-балет. Не для меня это)

    Блеска не хватает и уважения к логосу хореографии . Спортивность в сугубо художественных костюмах ... не убедительна и не адекватна художественной музыке , но в прекрасной музыке есть ключ к прекрасной пластике и движениям . Не очевидна "школа" . А в "школе" есть ключ к успеху в этом прекрасном музыкальном празднике .
