Why is Real Range not even close to Advertised? InMotion L9 test

  • It is important to understand how companies get their advertised range. In this video I discuss why advertised and real world range results often do not match up. The InMotion L9 electric scooter is a commuter e-scooter with big aspirations. The size, the weight, and the advertised range are all big. I do my version of a real world range test on the Inmotion L9 and I discuss why advertised range and real world range can be so different.

    Inmotion has high IP rating on it s products . That is why I got this and also cause of advertized range. I was in heavy rain, mud , hills, demanding ride in second mode(max24km/h)goes 41 km range. The company range test is apparently done in eco mode on flat terrain...
    I am very happy with the range I get in very demanding conditions, and I believe the company range test is somewhat accurate

    The amazing numbers for the L9 are for the Eco mode only...not the faster modes. You won't get a 59 mile range doing 17 or 18 mph. Eco mode only goes up to 11 mph. On my L9 I get around a 35 mile range in Drive mode...which is between Eco and Sport...which is perfectly fine.

      @@freshlycharged The guy, or girl, who wants to get 59 miles out of one charge? The idea of Eco is that mode you choose when you have two bars left, and miles to go before a re-charge...and you don't want range anxiety. Walking is much slower than Eco mode!

    They don't claim you'll get at least 59 miles on it or that you will get the same distance every time. They say up to 59 miles, if you ride lightweight and in ideal conditions. I consider 50-75 % of advertised distance in real world conditions.

    I don’t trust the given numbers for ANY device, and I think that giving the range under “best conditions” is incredibly misleading, particularly considering the size of the average American, and the fact that they’re unlikely to have a smooth paved road for the entire ride, let alone ride it slow only
    Really, they should give the realistic range. It might not be as eye catching as the best conditions, but it’s better to overperform than to underperform.

    • @freshlycharged
      @freshlycharged  3 года назад +1

      If I put myself in the company's shoes, I can see where they are coming from. It's tough when everyone else is giving inflated numbers.

    • @covcova
      @covcova 3 года назад

      @@freshlycharged
      I can understand that they want to put the best numbers forward, and that as the number are obtainable it's not lying per se, but it's rather misleading
      Not only that, it makes it difficult to plan trips. If I'm given a estimated range of 25 miles, I'm probably going to plan for around 20 miles, which should be enough to get the most from my device and not run out of juice at an inconvenient time . If they're only fudging the numbers a little, 20 should be fine. But if they're exaggerating the numbers a lot, and the "real" range is closer to 17-19, that could be an issue.
      Now, with a scooter, it's a mild issue, as you technically could kick-push it, but for the one wheel or EUC, that's not an option. And carrying 25+ LBS for two miles or more isn't fun
      That's why I like the scooters the best. Peace of mind is very important to me

    HALF the advertised range? And you used lightweight riders on flat smooth ground? That's embarrassing...😳
    I design things for a living and keep the specs honest, but with many PEV ridables the manufacturer is simply DISHONEST with their advertised range. It's sad but true.
    I agree with the commenter below that they should just provide the accurate spec for watt hours. Then a smart purchaser can have a good idea of range compared to other PEVs with similar sized batteries because PEV efficiencies are very similar.
    Or, just do real world tests with normal people at normal speeds and report the ACTUAL range that normal people get. That's a lot more honest than most PEV manufacturers.
    And credit to Onewheel; on flat tarmac I actually get better range than their official spec! Honest is good... 👍

Half the time I was in "Drive" mode, the other half I was in "Eco" mode... because the trails are scenic and I wanted to take my time. At the end of the 23 miles I had 45% battery left.
