    Injuries are rising because more people are using them. Because cars are too expensive. And the infrastructure is only designed for cars, leaving people with no choice but to endanger themselves to get to work. Requiring a permit does NOTHING to solve the infrastructure safety problem. All it does is make poor people have to go through more steps in order to have a proper vehicle. Which is classism. The entire reason a lot of people use these things is to avoid that shit. Requiring a permit acts as if the scooter riders are harming each other by crashing into each other, or crashing into a wall or something, but in reality most of those injuries come from car collisions at crosswalks, and to be more specific, right turns on red.

    The government should focus on building bike lanes before regulations

    • @STho205
      @STho205 13 часов назад

      Possibly so but a higher than pedal speed electric motorcycle is going to cause problems there too.
      These exceed the abilities of 50cc mopeds...and they aren't typically allowed in bike lanes, paths and require safety gear, tag-lic-insurance (in most states), full lighting, signals, and age restrictions.
      When they were just pedal assist then they were bikes. Now they're light motorcycles by function.

    • @amazingamx1255
      @amazingamx1255 8 часов назад

      @ i have a pedal assist ebike. I dont think speed is really an issue but moreso weight. I agree that anything weighting more than 120lb should be banned. The reason cars are so dangerous is due to their weight, not necessarily speed. Remember than in physics force is mass times speed. We should moreso focus on reducing mass than speed.

    • @STho205
      @STho205 7 часов назад

      @amazingamx1255 speed reduces time to react. A 50mph incident has 1/2 the time to close the distance than a 25 and 1/4 the time as a 12mph encounter.
      Children in plain clothes going above 20 is a recipe for disaster despite the mass. They just don't have the experience and special awareness yet...as well they still believe they are immortal.
      Pedal bikes can't go faster than you can push them with your strength, skill and maturity. EBikes can go as fast as the motor will push them with absolutely no skill, stength or practice needed.
      Now low power assist can help a rider stay at consistent pace which helps them maintain the lane and harmonious interactions.
      High power takes a thing that a driver assumes will be going 10 to 15mph and suddenly it arrives at 50. If a driver sees a bicycle they have to judge when they will arrive. Most people are bad at judging speed...so they make visual assumptions on experience. New EBikes are just suddenly too fast to not be considered and lighted as motorcycles.

      They're just mad that people are getting around without cars. It defeats the purpose of the car centric infrastructure which is to keep the poor poorer. So they're using "safety concerns" as an excuse to impose more regulations and therefore more discrimination against poor people. They don't care about our safety. If they did there wouldn't be so many large trucks on the road. But those large trucks are great at bringing in the money, as they're expensive, gas guzzling, and break down relatively quickly.

    Ebikes are facing the same issue as three wheelers. The general public gets carried away and its a recipe for disaster.
    Ebikes carry momentum into a crash more like a motorcycle.
    While not as severe, the types of injuries are often similar.
    A helmet in between a motorcycle helmet and bicycle helmet is ideal.
    Some motorcycle helmets aren't made for clumsy bumps at all so they'd actually be terrible bicycle helmets.
    Bicycles and motorcycles are designed a certain way for a reason, many ebikes are trying to emulate motorcycles.
    I've seen straight up motorcycles with pedals.
    Don't try to muddy the water, but i think eletric mini bikes should be allowed to operate as ebikes.
    Burromax minibikes would be a good example.
    For me it's definitely the people trying to ride sur rons on the roads and sidewalks that tend to be the biggest issue. A lot of people new to this idea seem attracted to high powered fat tire ebikes.
    They're more likely to wear their helmet backwards, Blow through intersections, ect.
    My state has a 750 watt limit and a helmet law for class 3 ebikes. I honestly find that to be fair.
    Previously all motorized bikes had to be registered as motorcycles.

    I'm fine with eBikes and think they are good transit...however if they are going to function like motorcycles at serious speeds then they ARE MOTORCYCLES.
    Just class them as motorcycles or class 10hp and less gas motorcycles the same as eBikes.
    The Chinese are making more and more niche devices that defy existing US road laws....30mph+ skateboard, high adrenaline eBikes, unlicenceable cart-cars.

    up 40% means 1 to 1.4 don't be fooled this is a power grab. They use percentages for a reason. To convince you of something. If they gave you an actual amount it would be seriously low and would not make a story.

    Looking at how many more injuries or accidents in isolation from how many more were sold is foolish. If you sell twice as many bikes, it is logical to anticipate twice as many accidents.

    I want see some actual studies to prove the numbers on these death/injury increase claims (and their origin). But even beyond that, what do people expect? There are _always_ going to be increases in deaths/injuries in new things like this until the market finishes it's growth, hits some form of stability, and everyone gets used to them being around.
    Besides, even if we enact a bunch of laws, what gaurantee do we have on a drop in deaths/injuries? Look at driving and the number of laws we have around that. Yet there are approximately 43k vehicle crash related deaths per year alone.
    Realistically speaking, we need more time and data to determine where the majority of the fault lies and what changes need to be made to prevent as many deaths/injuries as possible... and not to simply punish riders.

  • @a_stray_dog

    I wonder how the increase in ebike injuries correlates to the increase in car collisions against pedestrians and cyclists over the last few years. But of course, let's not regulate the thing _actually_ killing people, otherwise we might run the risk of making life better for the general population.

    What a way to show data lol, doubled from 2017 to 2022? You know how many more people got a bike? Especially during covid, we got cities installing bike lanes for the first time ever. Can we subtract car related accidents in those 5 years? But noooo... all we hear is spoooky! Doubled!!!

    • @En4cer2K9

      If there's one thing we learned from COVID, it's how they'll give arbitrary blanket statements without the proper context to push a fear agenda. I mean, for all we know, going from 2 to 4 is still factually "double", but if you omit that context, then a headline of "DOUBLE" sounds like a bigger number than it really is. Which causes panic and knee-jerk, emotional reactions. They just never tell you the actual numbers.

    You know what these e bike laws are ridiculous. (I have a valid driver's license and proof of insurance on a vehicle that doesn't run) I'm riding mine like a car on the road, commuting to where I need to go and not risking flats by riding on the shoulder because cities neglect fixing the actual problem, better roads free of debris, potholes, cracks, and/or put bike lanes in. Although not every rider is going to obey laws. It's all about common sense. (I now understand why many don't) Counties need to start steering towards more worthy crimes, like theft, arson, robberies, murders, carjacking list goes on. If you're going to be that restrictive on a vehicle that doesn't require anything but protection on your body, then make it mandatory the rider has to be over 18 with an M1 or M2 license. Petty government still in diapers fr
