- Today we are exploring what is left of a long forgotten mining settlement and carbonization plant. Out of all the explores I've done over the years, nothing has truly compared to the beauty of this amazingly preserved abandoned location. Well off the beaten path, this once booming location now sits quietly rusting away, slowly being reclaimed by nature. Join us as we take a look at what was left behind.

Mining first began in Rotowaro by the Taupiri coal company began
after a bridge over the Waikato river and railway to the area were constructed in 1915.
The mine instantly saw success, and in 1928, it was producing an average of 11,000 tons of coal every month.
Just west of the mine, a small community of about 500 houses was built so that miners could live within close proximity to the mine and increase efficiency. To reduce waste, a carbonization plant was constructed in the 1930's to convert any unusable or low quality coal into carbon briquettes.
As the mine progressed, the carbonization plant ran smoothly until 1985 when a major fire on the complex caused a retort to explode releasing mass amounts of hazardous chemicals into the surrounding area.
After the incident, the plants ownership changed hands several times, and with no one willing to do anything about the toxic wasteland that wast created, the plant was quickly abandoned.
Now it lays completely derelict, slowly being taken back by nature, a nod to a now forgotten revolutionary mining period.

This is my old home town where I grew up. This was a great movie on the Carbo as we used to call it. Brought back so many memories. Rotowaro was an amazing place to grow up in, the people and community were awesome. I miss it terribly. There is nothing quite like it. You guys did a wonderful job filming this. Thank you.
crazy dangerous but amazing footage great job! I just found your station a couple days ago and going back through them all from newest to oldest
My grandfather was the manager of this plant for 45 years Allan Jones I grew up learning about the process to make brackets carbonates grandad went around the world gaining knowledge and technology to help make the plant more efficient he was travelling towards the end of World War II on a fact finding mission to another few countries and got to Turkey and was thrown in jail which created a diplomatic incident that took him 10 days to get out of jail with a lot of back-and-forth from the New Zealand government. The site was labelled category one because I didn't know how to clean it up and it was easier to do that than clean it up it was just part of the culture back in those days. There is a thesis written by my grandfather I think it's in the Huntley area at the offices of solid energy which may not be an existence any more but there is a museum there.
Thanks guys 😊 you need to head South Island next time and explore waitahu, Denniston and big river 😁

Agreed. People who are trying to pronounce words/names in a language that is not their mother tongue should be given credit for trying. 👍🏼

I am trying to like these videos. This guy has a winning personality. However, the silly, unfunny kid like vaudeville jokes, have to go. Shaky camera too, need to stop that also.

If you're going to do a New Zealand video... at least learn to say the location names correctly (just as the locals, they will be more than happy to help - Its pronounced WHY-CAT-O (Waikato)!
Michael Currie
My thoughts exactly
If they are going to do kiwi things get a kiwi to help them

Michael Currie
