Who needs photography school when this guy shares his knowledge so gracefully. Thanks brother. What a plus and great resource. RUclips one of the best things to come out of the Matrix we live in today. Thanks I follow and learn something every day.
@@jake.bennett lol ikr, i learned all the basics in just a few weeks of watching youtube videos, but took photography 3 times at my school (because no other electives seemed interesting to me) and only understood anything after I taught myself via youtube.
One of the best explanations I've heard on shutter speed, aperture, and ISO. Simple and clear. Was a headache to try and understand but you made it very easy to grasp and I know what I need to adjust to get the look I'm after. Thank you and keep up the great work!
Yeah yeah cool man. I just watched A Kite (1998) on hanime last night HIGHLY recommended. It's R18+ I presume. Gonna get back to drawing now but shoulder is hurting! How do you get your drawings looking like a 90's anime??? I mean the colours are different right, I think it was put to film which is what caused the colours to look like that. Woah your hands videos got 2.7 mill views woah I'm gonna watch that.
People who do videos about video rarely discuss the basics of setting up your camera, but you just did - thanks. This is probably your most important video in quite a while. I hope your viewers will bookmark this, click the like button and share it.
Side note: If you're shooting on a green screen, you'll want to use a higher shutter speed, to eliminate some of the motion blur. Often 1/80th will suffice.
Came here to ask just that. I recently did some green screen work with my a7sii at 24fps and 1/80. Still had a bit of trouble with the key, as my subject was energetic with lots of hand movements. Was shooting slog3 internally. I’m wondering for my next shoot if I would benefit more from increasing shutter speed even more. Or, I just purchased an Atomos Ninja Inferno, so less compression might do the trick.
I'm amazed that 29 people, so far (I'm spelling 'people' i.d.i.o.t.s) have disliked this video. I've been a pro photographer and video maker and teacher for over 35 years, and this is the clearest, most succinct and best delivered instruction on these 3 tricky topics that I have ever seen. Well done!
Hands-down the most useful video on RUclips for someone getting into film. So clearly explained. Now I can take my camera off auto mode and do some experimenting. Definitely bookmarking this one! Thank you
Just found this video today, I'm just starting to shoot. I have watched like 100 videos in the past week and trying to learn, but for some reason it all kinda clicked when you explained it and for that reason I thank you!
professional musician here who is filming sunsets, etc to put music to. I was stuck in autofocus and recently wasted an afternoon and a beautiful sunset. (I have good ones as well). I thought it was too complicated to learn this but you made it clear. This is by far the best tutorial I have seen. You have a gift. I subscribed of course.
Seriously, I took an entire photography course in college and I feel like I have a better understanding of this topic and the interactions between all these settings better now than I ever did then. Thanks for this video. Subbed.
Finally a video that gives a systematic, yet practical, explanation of these three DSLR settings without getting too technical. Far to many videos get into the mathematics and physics of these adjustments. I just want a basic and practical explanation like you gave! Thanks a million!
Excellent video man. It’s crazy how hard it’s been to find this exact info for shooting video. As a photographer I understand the ‘exposure triangle’ but when trying to wrap my head around how they apply to video when it’s not just individual photos but a constant capture it leaves a lot of questions and you’ve answered many of them very simply. Thanks!
f/22 means "Focus divided by 22", the same as 1/22=0.04545454545. Everyone doing this tutorials seems to don't understand basic mathematics language. And the earth still spherical. ;)
Best and easiest explanation and guide to understanding the works of a still camera. I have been a shooter for TV 25 + years and have just recently given in to the new generation of " Video by Still Camera". I have never been a still shooter, so a difficult move from Iris, and ND filters to, Aperture/ISo/Shutter. Thanks
I have just watched this excellent tutorial. It is a well explained tutorial. My only 2 cents worth comment : 1. After fixing shutter speed and aperture in manual mode, choose Auto ISO, so the camera will automatically adjust the ISO to keep the exposure correct except when there's too much light even after adjusting the f-stop to the highest number when you need a neutral density (ND) filter, or extra light source when it is too dark even after dialling up the highest aperture. The other point perhaps worth mentioning is that if you are using a zoom lens with variable f-stop and you wish to maintain the same depth of field in your video, then choose the smallest aperture (highest number) in your settings as per your lens and you will have consistent depth of field through out the shoot, even at maximum zoom.
I actually did film production at uni for 3 years and had films in Bafta accredited short film festivals and this video has taught me more in 12 mins than I have learnt in 8 years so clear and so well explained . So so grateful thank you
Been watching your videos for 4 days now, crazy crazy informative. Bought myself a g85 a few months ago, and I’m so delighted to find you have a guide series for only 20 dollars. Just purchased it now, can’t wait to watch it tomorrow!
started my video training from my daughter last night and decided to watch your video just to make sure I was covering all the bases excellent job Caleb
I'm not a professional by any stretch of the imagination but this is by far the best video I've been able to find for camera settings as they relate to video. Excellent job.
New to video but old to photography - this video was brilliant in explaining why you need to think differently about shutter speed I.e. 180 rule. Thanks
Finally. I've been watching tons of vids since I got into photography last month. This is the clearest explanation of these settings I've found thus far. Thanks!
This video was the most clear explanation of shutter speed, aperture and iso. nice way of visually showing the functions instead of showing graphs and triangles in other videos! Great helpful video.
I know about these 3, in the context of still, underwater shooting. I now make a push into learning video and I know NOTHING about how to coordinate them in Video. Seems to be a whole different animal, and yes, maybe easier (!)? Really clear, concise explanation, maybe the best I've heard. Even though I shoot with a Sony, this is totally applicable! Thank you so much!!
thank you so much. just an easy tutorial. that's all i asked for. you my friend deserve a frickyidy flippin billion dollars. i hope you win a nobel peace prize. i hope that every wish you make comes true. why it was so difficult to find a good tutorial on this is beyond me. from the bottom of my heart and the 478,288 viewers i say thank you
Caleb, we discovered a video of yours last night, and we are hooked! Your videos are fantastic and so informative! We're subscribers now, and looking forward to new content!!!
Wow been at this for months and thought I needed a quick brush up. I must say this has been one of the best explanations I've seen on the subject. Thorough yet straight to the point without all the extra jazz/noise you see everywhere on RUclips taking up your time. I like that you put it all into real world practice for usu too. Subscribed I'll deff check out some of your other videos.
I’ve seen many videos that describe A/S/I and how the affect exposure. This is the first video I have seen that actually explains what to do with that information; how to actually apply it. Thx
Thank you! This is the most informative and succinct explanation of Shutter speed/aperture/ISO and how they work in filmmaking I have yet to come across. I really appreciate the explanation of how to approach balancing/prioritizing the three for film work. Most explanations stop after describing what the three features do. Very helpful!!
I like how you bring out the most basic characteristics that You can influence the quality of a good photo, how bright or dark it will turn out. This may seem very easy to understand, yet it can take some time to master. There isn’t any objective variable that tells You when the exposure is “right”. You have to find for Yourself if a photograph looks too bright or dark. Your Video is quite the guide.
As a photographer coming to video, this video just straight up put me on the path. Now I can mess with resolution and profiles or whatever... knowing the exposure triangle fundamentals. No "who did that??" Google search excursions when something goes wrong ha. Thanks a ton!
Wonderful explanation, Caleb. Any beginner's photo book explains shutter speed, aperture, and iso, but you went on to give us examples of how they work in video, and how to adjust one to fix the other, ND filter, etc. Super job!
This was THE most straightforward, helpful, and informative video i have ever seen describing these settings. Thank you so much for sharing this! I've watched soooo many videos where they use complicated language and it makes it so difficult for beginners to understand. This was so so helpful
Caleb, thanks for this great, informative video. I know I'm commenting on a very old video at this point, but I've been watching your channel for a while and this is just what I needed. I have uploaded hundreds of vlogs many years ago with Flip cam, iPhone, and GoPros, then took a many year break when I got into photography. I've been a photographer for about 5 years now, shooting manual, so I understood the concepts of the exposure triangle, but I had no idea where to start with shutter speed for video. When I searched the topic and saw your video, I knew it would be the one to watch. Thanks again for your great channel!
It took me so long to learn about these 3 settings and how important they are, and likely if I'd just watched this vid all would be clear. I think the thing that's most important is noise/grain, depth of field, and motion blur over compicated and less important technical stuff about how much light is entering the camera for how long etc (which some I've found go into too much and can confuse people somewhat) - those things are fine if you're interested in all that but for most how these three settings affect the image is paramount.
i know all this stuff back to front, but it's good to have it explained back to me. Wish I saw videos like this when I was first learning, would've saved a lot of time and confusion!
As a professional photographer of course I know the relationship between these settings. But I’m venturing into video as a complete noob! This was really helpful and simplified the process with regards to video, thank you :)
I have watched multiple videos multiple times but didn't get it. I watched yours just once and learned everything like the back of my hand. You are a great teacher man. Liked and subbed 👍
I am so grateful for this. I make silent films on my channel and this will be my go to for a quick refresher. Saves me thousands of dollars in film school tuition.
I just bought a G7 for my channel and just by placing it on auto, I see an amazing improvement over my iPhone; obviously. But during the video I noticed the camera changing settings in the middle of my video. It was irritating to see. So I came here to learn how to manually control the settings to prevent this. I know nothing about photography, but thank goodness for you. You were a huge help in at least clearing up the basics. Now I can play around with the settings and have some idea what the heck they do. I think there must be 200 buttons and settings on this camera😒. But I’m determined to learn them. Thanks so much. 👍😊
Best video I've found describing these 3 aspects specifically for film making. ISO has always been the one that I didn't fully understand, great explanation. Also, great examples of how shutter speed can affect feel and tone of a scene. Never thought of that! Thanks so much!
I’ve watched many educational film making videos and I just have to compliment, this is the best educational explanation over these three major video elements that I came across. Wonderful job brotha
Great job explaining and thanks for this. I keep hearing and learning about these three important camera fundamental settings (shutter speed, aperture, iso), and everything would seem clear whenever I would watch an explanation. But then 10 minutes later, I would be like, now what does aperture do again ? This explanation really helped simplify and clarify the distinctions on which each of these settings does and how to use and adjust each in different scenarios. Much of photography will be overcoming challenges of too much light, not enough light, too much depth or not enough depth of field, so to logically think it through which settings to prioritize and then adjust for special circumstances is really important and helpful.
If only YT gave me an option to give 2 THUMBS UP... This would be that video! Thanks Caleb for yet another great tutorial. Really like how you explain these settings and the pace was easy to follow. 2 THUMBS UP!!!
Thanks for this video. I'm new to photography and film, and after watching many videos on this subject, I have understood the subject on Aperture, shutter speed and ISO from you clearly. Excellent video, very much appreciated for you sharing. Subscribed.
I've been shooting for 3 years but I still watch some basic videos like this to make sure I'm doing it right. Thanks Caleb!

Just came across this. I've heard people shooting as high as 1/320 to get a very clean key. It's trial and error depending on the camera and setup.
Or get a superior keying tech for post that will key blur.
That's what brought me here! Blurry green hands when I move around on my green screen.
Thanks for the info, that will come in useful.

Great job explaining and thanks for this. But then 10 minutes later, I would be like, now what does aperture do again ? This explanation really helped simplify and clarify the distinctions on which each of these settings does and how to use and adjust each in different scenarios. Thanks for this video. I'm new to photography and film, and after watching many videos on this subject, I have understood the subject on Aperture, shutter speed and ISO from you clearly. Excellent video, very much appreciated for you sharing. Subscribed.
As a photography noob, I really appreciated you breaking all this down. Got a lot out of this, thanks!
Maybe it’s because this is like the 4th time that I’ve had this explained, but this explanation really got through to me
Very useful and professionally done (unlike a lot of the presentations that are mostly about the presenter!). Thank you.
