    I use the Vandoren Reed Resurfacer (reed glass) and have been happy with it.

    Just started doing this today with my saxophone reeds. At first it feels like you aren’t making any progress and for me the reed was still stuffy after doing it but once you do it a little longer and trust the process it actually works now I have two concert ready reeds instead of one. Thanks!

    I tried your method on my baritone saxophone reeds, so far I'm quite impressed. Sealing those pores is very important. Thanks for the tip. I just sanded the back and the heart. I had some baritone reeds that were too strong and unplayable, your method has made them absolutely playable.

    I use just a blank white paper(printer paper) to just smooth it out before I play-test the reed then I start to work on it. I think it's important to know what is going on with the reed before you work on it. By doing this I can be sure that the reed will "break-in" evenly,be stable and last a long time.

    Been doing this for years, you don't need any glass just a good flat surface. 🙂

    We have to wet reeds. In fact it has been recommended that we immerse a reed so water enters the minute tubes at the thick end. So how does sealing the pores help. After all a dry reed dies not work well. I am confused.

    Informative video; how do you decide when a reed is ready for “prime time”?

    • @callyclarinet
      @callyclarinet  Год назад

      When it's up to 15-20 mins of playing time

    I use a Reed Geek, have you tried one? also I'm very impressed with the Didarrio Venn synthetic reeds. They look and feel like a real reed, its made with reed fibers. The advantage is if your a doubler as I am when your clarinet is not being used the reed isn't warped when your part says " Switch to clarinet".
    They project quite well and last for months of heavy plying. What Kind of mouthpiece did you mention you use? I kept screwing up my reeds with sandpaper.

      Yeah, the reed geek is good! I keep losing track of it, though, lol. I switch between the BD5 and B40 Lyre.

    Interesting tip about lower register. I went straight into playing high overtones on my tenor with my new $6 reed when I switched to cane. It lasted 2 days and now doesn't play at all. I mean literally nothing.

    Im trying to adjust reeds for the first time
    What sandpaper would you suggest?

    • @callyclarinet
      @callyclarinet  7 месяцев назад +1

      600 should be fine, if you're really nervous you could go as fine as 1200

  • @jimis3167
    @jimis3167 Год назад

    For me, I find better smoothing only the back part of the reed. I don't like smoothing the front, my lip likes the roughness on reeds. When I was also smoothing the front part, the lip-feeling was becoming like synthetic reeds, too smooth, didn't like.

    So, you don’t use the ATG system? I just watched that video you created. Now I am confused!

    • @callyclarinet
      @callyclarinet  Год назад +1

      ATG is good for adjusting, especially reeds that are stuffy or old reeds that need new life. This method is good to use when breaking in new reeds, and have found that they last longer and play more consistently.

    to seal the pores and make it smooth use notebook sheet of paper... to make the modifications as Tom ridenour teaches use sand paper...also to smooth the back of the reed you put the paper onto the glass and the reed on top and from there move the reed in circles pressing down ... like you are showing may damage the reed, it´s taking unecesary risk. I like the work you do in your channel but in this case you are giving bad advice.

    • @callyclarinet
      @callyclarinet  Год назад

      No offense taken! Thanks for sharing your thoughts, as I am sure some viewers are hesitant to try this for the same reasons you mention. I understand it is a bit strange and may not work for everyone. Putting a reed flat on the paper has never worked as well for me as this, so I hope it will help others who are curious to try something different.

      I wouldn't say this is bad advice, this is advice my own lesson teacher has given me, but since I don't have 600 grit sandpaper, I use a sheet of paper and sand the backside first, and then do the front side second with a small, folded piece of paper
