  • ************* A COUPLE CHANGES TO THIS SHED PROJECT**********
Right after I posted this video, I immediately realized the airflow was no where near enough for this size generator. A week after posting this video, I modified the shed with the following, to increase airflow in as well as out.
    1. Went from 1- 14"x14" intake vent to 2 -14"x14"
    2. Changed fan from 12" 1800CFM to 20" 3368 CFM
This should be enough airflow to keep the generator at a good operating temperature. If this is still not enough, then I will just keep the door open.
    Parts used:
    Lifetime shed 60170 (6 ft. 2.7 in. L x 3 ft. 6.1 in. W)
Two- Powertec 4" Blast door from Amazon
    Roxul mineral wool from Grainger
1/4"x 1 1/4" washer ZAY head code from Home Depot
2" hex head self tapping screws
4 ft. x 3 ft. x 1/2 in Horse stall mat from Tractor Supply 124634
1/2" cement board between shed and mineral wool
Two -14"x14" Return air vent from Amazon
iLiving 20" Shutter exhaust fan from Amazon
3" diameter B-vent from Home Depot
92 decibel doors open, before conversion, 75 decibel after conversion from 6 feet away
***** WARNING, REMEMBER WHEN WORKING AROUND ELECTRICITY. BE SAFE AND MAKE SURE THE POWER IS OFF BEFORE STARTING.*****

Exhaust pipe going outside, the plastic shed.
Need duct work (pipe) from the outside to the engine blower fan.
Need two 12" X 12" vents in the winter, electric fans on the vents in the summer.
    Have fun.

I did built myself A Plywood Generator Shed and built A Ply-Wood Muffler Silencer from the muffler exhaust. Temperature of the Exhaust is 200 degree inside my Ply-wood muffler silencer. That's Why I Must use a Portable A/C to HELP Cool Down the Heat inside the Generator Shed and the Exhaust fan blow/ Cool Down the Ply-wood muffler silencer around 130 degree . But inside the Generator Shed Temp around 90-100 degree within Range 😅

You've done a good job with insulating your panels around the generator. Your ventilation method is good for the engine air intake and exhaust. I would encourage you to learn more about the genset air flow. My experience showed me that the genset takes air in from the opposite direction of the engine and therefore you may want to look at piping in a separate intake to the head of the Genset. Otherwise the genset operates in a negative pressure environment and may ultimately overheat. This is especially important since the Westinghouse warranty requires 5 feet of clearance around the entire generator which is not possible inside of a box. Nice build. Good luck.

Looks good- a few ideas would be seriously upping the ventilation volume, I.E lower in & higher out. Power an exhaust fan w/ the generator power. And find out which direction the {built-in cooling fan} of the engine/power head unit goes.. Put the side-wall intakes in the side of the shed near where the power unit DRAWS air into itself. The exhaust vent should be mounted up high on the opposite sidewall or roof location at the highest point of the area where possible. Natural flow of cooler air that absorbs heat will flow upward towards the exhaust outlet.

How many pieces of mineral wool did you require to insulate the shed?

    • @gilbosdiy
      @gilbosdiy  Год назад +2

If I remember correctly it was 6 to 7 pieces was all. Each piece is 1-1/2 in. x 24 in. x 48 in. So to maximize coverage you have to play a little Tetris before cutting and attaching. Hope this helps, if you have anymore questions, just ask thanks again for watching.

1/4"x 1 1/4" washer ZAY head code from Home Depot
Attach cement board to shed first, with some I believe I used either 3/4" or 1" self tapping screw.
2" hex head self tapping screws I had. Just screw in enough to hold mineral wool in place.
Don't go crazy and you don't want to drill all the way through shed

For the exhaust hole, I went down my local Home Depot and picked up one of these.
American Metal Products 3 in. Gas Vent Pipe Male Adapter
      www.homedepot.com/p/American-Metal-Products-3-in-Gas-Vent-Pipe-Male-Adapter-3EUA-MH/202287764
Just remember when drilling the exhaust hole, try to have the exhaust hole centered with exhaust of the generator.

Please do yourself a favor and check the inside temperatures with a remote thermometer. Shoot for about a 10 deg f temp. rise maybe slightly more. To achieve this with my 5 kw honda exhausted to the outside and two 17' sq vents, one powered I migrated from a 12" to a 14" fan and finally settled on a 16" 3,000 cfm fan.

Funny you mention that, literally after I posted the video the other day. I was looking over the shed, immediately realized it was undersized. Started to rattle the couple marbles left between my ears, amount of heat waste to move, CFM needed, amp draw from new fan. Shed 2.0 coming soon!

@@gilbosdiy Yes I would like to know what the inside temperature runs with the doors closed. I have a 5600w generator in a similar shed with a 1800cfm fan and have the exhaust routed outside and the temperature will get over 95degF in the hot Louisiana summer. I end up having to open the doors to limit the generator surface temperature to 65 degC. Let me know how your temperature runs in hot weather.

    • @gilbosdiy

I got shed years ago at Costco, if you plan on getting this particular generator and a shed for it. The shed needs to be atleast 75 cubic feet.
Lifetime shed 60170 (6 ft. 2.7 in. L x 3 ft. 6.1 in. W). I think Sam's has this size shed for about $350.00, might be different color.
Hope this helps, thanks again for watching. Make sure you check out the entire series of videos for this generator, and forget to hit the like and subscribe button. if you have anymore question(s) drop me a note and I'll try and help.
