Schwinn 270 Recumbent Bike Sensor Replacement

  • A little while back, our Schwinn 270 exercise bike started to pause the workout after about 30 seconds, as if the peddles were not being used. You could still use the bike, but if you were attempting to use a pre-set workout, it was impossible. The resistance wouldn't work and the time would stop. Replacing the sensor ended up being the solution. Here I walk you through the process of replacing it.

    Thanks for posting the video. Our bike has the same problem, entering "pause" mode while we are still pedaling. I would like to see a sharp, stationary view of the sensor, to try to understand what's in there. Also, how close is the tip of the sensor to the magnets on the wheel? Can you tell how the magnets are held in place? It looks like a sloppy job with some black adhesive; I hope it's a little better quality than that. I'm glad the sensor fixed your problem!

      I think I left about a quarter to half inch between the sensor and the magnets. My first thought was the magnets had shifted, but they were solid. I don't know that the sensor can be repaired, so I just replaced it. Good luck!

      @@typicalthrill Thanks for the quick reply! I found a photo of the sensor on another site. It appears to be a magnetically operated reed switch. Normally it would be open (off) and would briefly be closed (on) as the magnet goes past. The switch appears to be in a sealed glass tube, inside the protective plastic tube. I would have thought it couldn't fail (maybe after many thousand operations) but apparently yours did! I'll give that a try on our bike and keep my fingers crossed. Thanks again!

      @@gregm.857 Wow, thanks for the detail! I chose the easy route! From what I’ve heard, it’s pretty common for this sensor to fail on these bikes. Maybe they got a bad batch.

    Was your original issue that the bike would enter “pause” mode during a workout? Seems to be a common complaint but yours was the first video to show a fix. Thanks.

    • @typicalthrill
      @typicalthrill  Год назад +1

      Yes, we would start a workout and within a minute or so it would pause and tell us to start pedaling to continue the workout. Thanks for watching!

      @@typicalthrill do you happen to remember the specific parts you ordered from Schwinn? TYVM.

      @@johnshields2815 I don't have a part number or anything. They ended up sending me one under warranty. It was the speed sensor kit though. Came with a sensor and a peddle pulling tool. If you let them know what model you have, they should be able to take it from there. Hope that helps!

    do you have a link to buy that part that removes the pedal arm?

      I don’t, unfortunately. They sent me one with the replacement part.

    Helpful. But what are the specific part numbers to do the repair (especially the piece for removing the pedal and wheel housing) and did you have to contact Schwinn directly? Available elsewhere?

      Hey! Sorry I didn't see your comment come through! Yes, I had to contact Schwinn directly and they sent the parts and the tool to pull the pedal. I don't know the part numbers, sorry.

      @@typicalthrill I just got off the phone with Schwinn (Bowflex now) and they said they no longer have sensors/parts for the 270 recumbent bike. :(
      They gave me two sites that supposedly have parts.. One didn't, and the other want's 10x what MSRP for the sensor costs.

      @@larryowens7023 Ouch, sorry to hear that. We sold our Schwinn a little while back when we found a good deal on a Peloton.

    Nice video! Any thoughts on the issue my 270 is having? Whether I pick a program or just pedal it, if the resistance setting is changed above about level 3 or so, the servo motor keeps whirring and moving the magnets back and forth from the flywheel never finding the right spot. Therefore the resistance cycles from max low to max high. In fact it goes past setting 25 and pretty much effectively stops the flywheel until the servo backs the magnets back away again.
    At low resistance setting (and not offering any kind of real workout) the level remains constant. But when I tried increasing the resistance (setting 7 or 12 for example) the above issue occurs. It's really frustrating!
    Is it the same sensor you replaced that indicates to the bike that a resistance level has been attained?

      @typicalthrill  8 месяцев назад +1

      Hi, sorry for the late reply. I don't think mine had a motor that moved the resistance. Seemed like it was mechanical. The sensor I replaced was a very simple switch that tracked the speed of the wheel. Didn't have anything to do with resistance. I can't think of what could be causing your issue. May be worth a call to customer support! Thanks for watching!

    We have a 270 model I bought from a close friend. He rarely used it. We have had it for 3 weeks and now when it is plugged in the screen lights up but
    nothing happens when any button is pushed. The fan also is not working. Everything worked until a week ago. Do I need a sensor?

    • @typicalthrill
      @typicalthrill  Год назад

      That doesn't sound like the sensor. I'm not sure what would cause button presses to stop working. The sensor from this video is only for wheel movement.

      We called Schwinn and they sent us one. Not sure how much it would be otherwise.
