Incredibly helpful video. I'm not particularly adept at this sort of repair, but figured I'd only be out the expense for the crank pulley extractor (about $14), if I couldn't perform the repair. But, to my complete surprise, I was able to do this fix with your help! I figure you saved me about $600 or more -- thank you!

After I called the company and they told me that it would cost about $500.00 to change the computer head and that would fix the problem. I can see right away that all they wanted was more of my money and of course the problem wouldn't have been fixed. Thank You very much Mr. Fix it guy!

Holy guacamole, dude, that worked perfectly! Thank you SO much for this tip. I was about to get on a phone call with Schwinn/Nautilus customer service that no doubt would've taken hours and resolved nothing.
My only regret is that this video didn't exist 3 or 4 years ago because I tossed my last Schwinn exercise bike after not being able to get the resistance to work. 😭 BTW, I was able to do this fix without removing the pedal also. I just unplugged the wire going to the power cord to allow me to scoot the outer shell out of the way better, which gave me easy access to the screw. Took 30 seconds! I bow in your direction bro. 🙇‍♂

Worked like a charm. Like some others, I didn't take off the entire pedal. But it disconnected the power connection. I only needed to reconnect it. When I turned the blue piece, mine moved a little so I had to hold it while turning it. Thanks for the video. Saved my bike and some money since I didn't have to pay someone to repair it.

Dude, Thanks for the video! I separated the halves by removing some screws, spread it apart until I could see the servo and the adjustment screw, shined a flashlight inside and using a phillips jeweler's screwdriver, I backed it out a quarter turn and POW, I now have a restored resistance which goes from little at 1 to a LOT at 25 and everything in between. OUTSTANDING. I didn't even need to remove the pedal to do it since you should me where and what I had to do on the left hand side. Thanks again.

I tried this but couldn't get the plastic shell removed because I didn't have the proper tools to remove the petal and so what I did was this. #1 I loosened the plastic shell as best as I could.#2. I used a felt tip marker to draw a circle around the area of the plastic shell where the blue screw area was. #3. I used a torch and close hanger to burn through the plastic around the area where the blue screw area was. Then I popped out the burned area and tightened the blue-screw area and it works fine now.

Thank you for this video. I did this fix and it did buy me another 6 months or so of better resistance before it went back to little resistance even at the highest levels. I ended up buying a new servo motor for $100 which wasn't that much more complicated to install than this procedure, the most difficult part is getting the bike opened up. The bike is literally like new now. It is amazing what that new servo motor does for the complete resistance level bands. If, like me, you are considering just tossing this bike for a new one, I highly recommend trying a new servo motor.

I was able to solve 2 problems with my 270 using information gleaned from this video as well as a couple others. Didn’t have to remove the shrouds. Simply removed all the screws from the shrouds, reached in & adjusted the potentiometer and moved the speed sensor closer to the axis of rotation of the magnets. Solved the resistance adjustment problem as well as the “workout paused” problem.

Thank you for this, you saved me! I found that you can actually work the panels off without taking off the pedal arm, it's not as easy but I didn't want to wait for ordering the puller part. But the adjustment worked just like you showed. The only item of note is apparently Schwinn installs those rheostats in 2 different places, mine was on the top and I needed to take the right side off. That one sucks more because then the adjustment screw is behind the fly wheel, but with a small screwdriver and positioning the wheel so I could put the screwdriver through, I was able to do it. The screw turns fairly easily, and you don't need to turn it much, seeing how far the magnets moved after the adjustment you made I made a smaller turn and it was still too much so anyone else doing this I suggest turning it about a quarter turn and testing it. I ended up with at 25 my magnets are about an inch apart and that's still really stiff when you get up around 11 or more so plenty of resistance in the upper levels while still being plenty loose at 1 to 5ish. But thank you thank you thank you again for this video!!!

Brilliant! Thank you so much. It worked for my shwinn 270. I also didn't remove the wheels thanks to your clear directions about where to look, but it did require some negotiating body placement, a good flashlight, and finding a small enough screwdriver. I didn't think it worked at first because the white thing with the blue backing didn't "look" like it had moved, but sure enough a couple notches did the trick. Thank you thank you.

Outstanding! Tried the manual/cardboard 'adjustment' and had the same result. Figured it was the servo going bad or misaligned somehow. Older 130 (2014) and the screw is a little tricky to get at with the wheel in the way. Used a jewelers Phillip screwdriver .Well done man.

In my case the bike is a Nautilus R618, but it has the same or similar motor as the Schwinn. I had already slid the motor forward as far as it would go per the instructions. I appreciate these instructions-it worked on my Schwinn 170! I would have never known to do this on my own. I do not have the crank puller tool but was able to remove the entire right side panel without cracking it, although it must have been close to the breaking point. The pedal has to come off first, of course, and you can leverage the crank out of the hole.

Great video. As others say, no physical adjustment was needed. They likely have sereveral versions of the bikes with slightly different adjustment methods. In my case the potentiometer was correct. But the pedals were removed wiht a wrench (right pedal, right hand threads; left pedal left hand threads). Otherwise it was pretty easy. The hardest part is finding all the recessed screws to remove the shroud. I finally figured out to lay the bike on it's side. Most ot the screws are on the left side. When you reassemble the bike lay the bike on the right side, mount the left shroud and put in the two bottom screws that go into the frame. Flip the bike, locate the white line up part and put the right hand shroud on and add the screws on that side. Flip the bike again and do the remaining left side screws then go back and tighten them all. If I ever do this again I'm going to drill a 3/4" hole on the left side so I can adjust the potentiometer without removing the shroud.

  • @Dan-tv7eo
    @Dan-tv7eo 11 месяцев назад +1

Tip: After the side cover screws are removed, lay the bike on its side. The adjustment screw will be easily accessible with a short'ish small phillips head from the bottom of the bike.

I have a 270 Recumbent that quit having any resistance after a couple months. I've looked for solutions, but none seemed practical - or financially sound. This video seemed too easy to believe - why wouldn't Schwinn simply put this in the manual or post it online. Nevertheless, gave it a try - worked perfectly. The most difficult step is getting the pedal off and that depends on having the right tool. The test now is how long will it last. I'll post an update if I need to repeat. For now, GREAT FIX - THANKS!!!

Asking here in case someone else has the same issue as my 170 has (and couldn't find an answer online even if I browsed many forum, maybe I didn't search the right thing but anyway)
My 170 is about 2-3 years old and has no apparent mechanical issue. Last month, all of a sudden, the difficulty 5 my wife use daily for about 45 minutes became as difficult as 20ish difficulty. She lowered it to 2 but it was still closer to a 7 difficulty and 1 was basically no resistance.
Unplugging for 3 minutes for the reset didn't help and magically after 2 weeks it got back to normal. 1 week later it bugged again and it now looks like 2 is 7+ difficulty again. 3 minute unplugged didn't this time either.
Since the issue looks to be random, is there something else that could cause the issue? I was about to open it to try and figure it out and haven't yet TBH, but since I found this video and people having issues I guess I could ask if anyone already saw something like that.
    Thanks!

So it fixes it but it's not calibrated to match the programming. I wonder how they calibrate it from the factory

That motor is more than likely set at a default level that they install in these units. In this case, you just gotta find a new comfort level on the machine💥💥

Hi! I also have a Schwinn 270 with the same problem. Could you please tell me which parts you used? I don't know much about tools but am trying to find the cheapest ones for this repair. Thanks! 🙏

You'll need a small Phillips screwdriver to remove the 5 screws that hold the case together. Make sure to remove the case on the left side (if you're sitting in the seat). You'll need a 14 mm socket to remove the screw from the pedal. You then need a specialized tool to remove the pedal - a bicycle crank arm puller (available on Amazon for about $10) an adjustable crescent wrench or vice grips. This is the most difficult step. Notice the video pauses because it takes a good amount of effort to loosen. Then you just need a very small flathead screwdriver to adjust the resistance (about a quarter to a half turn to counter clockwise). It goes back together easily. Good luck.

@@goshkruse Hey again :) So I got the nut off but then tried to use this set but unfortunately the end piece of the puller was too big and it didn't fit into the hole.

If you don’t have a crank puller, you can take off the pedal with a standard wrench, then pull the side panel off over the crank arm.

If you don’t have a pedal puller I used a 3 jaw puller from harbor freight $20.

This will screw up the magnets control of going going front to back and back to front. You will get more resistance, but the controls WILL be jacked up. Follow the user's manual. I have to set it to 25 and work my way down now. Going from 1 up does nothing because I did this video.
