- Hello Everyone!
Night Springs is probably the longest running sub plot in the Remedy setting. A simple TV show that rose up and took on a life of its own. First appearing in Alan Wake, it has shown up in every subsequent game. A mysterious town where weird things happen. But the town sometimes is a real place.
What is the nature of this mysterious town? How do the events in the episodes eventually become real? At the end of the day, What is Night Springs really?
In today's episode breakdown we will be focusing on the episode, Taken in his Prime. Wanting to get into the service industry, Manny goes through an interview process. One that involves his sense of free will removed from him.

The whole "newspaper ad" joke is surprisingly subtle. Poor Manny saw a job posting that they needed someone to serve, and he thought he could get a job as a waiter.
Wonder howbmwny people anseernthe newspaper ad
Reminds me of Twilight Zones “To serve man”
@@doobzsalam1847 Such a great episode. The twist is completely absurd, but so satisfying.
If the cult of the tree members gave their hearts by choice, it would be cool if they are called “The Given”
"It's like poetry. It rhymes."
Best way to put it. My two favorite gaming franchises tend to rhyme. Remedyverse and Legend of Zelda.
This episode is almost comedic in its directness. Violence as a mind control technique is frightfully well documented. When our basic needs, like not being beaten, aren't met, we lose interest in our higher needs, like self-actualization and morality. If you can make someone tie their physical safety to obedience you can largely prevent them from ever seeking those higher needs. Because we can't stand to be "the bad guy", it will even go past that to the point that we will work hard to make up stories about why we're actually doing good.
Hence why Fear is the root emotion. Fear for personal safety. Almost s forn of Stockholm syndrome. If you make the Fear of danger go away then I'll do what you say
Well, Remedy did outsmart you on this one. The cult of the tree ended up being something veeeery different.
when i first saw this episode i was weirded out cause it feels too metaphoric but when you think of alan wake 2 while watching it, it somehow make sense to me
Hence why I kind of bbn suspect Alan wrote this one. He 'heavily' uses metaphore in his work. Sheriff Break called him out on it before.
To quote Rihanna: "Who do you think you are? Running around leaving scars, collecting your jar of hearts?"
Rihanna in the RCU confirmed lol
Another amazing video!
I’ve never really watched the episode in the entirety of it because I didn’t like watching someone being beat up, but now I can totally see the connection of the Night Springs Episode relating to events in Alan Wake, especially if we take into account the ‘heart being ripped out’ of it all. I love Alan Wake so much because of things like this, things in the background linking to the main plot. Alan Wake is, in my opinion, one of a kind. Great video!
Thanks Fan! Yeah I keep expecting to find an episode of Night Springs that doesn't have any connection to the main plot in some way. So far I'm still waiting lol
I was about to go to bed and then this popped up and I never miss an episode so here we go
Hope you enjoyed and get a good rest too!
@@GamingUniversityUoG of course I enjoyed it, you make some of the best stuff out there but no, I didn't get good sleep, but I am an insomniac, so it comes with the territory
Fantastic breakdown! Thanks for doing these, they really are incredible.
You're awesome thank you! Glad you enjoy
Another well done lesson video GU!
Thanks buddy!
I Learn so much from these analysis about the lore of world ,
thank you for these content ,
keep it up .
You got it dude! Glad these can help expand the world for you.
Great analysis! Looks like you are correct.
I didn't make that final link to cult of the tree until I was halfway through writing this. Males perfect sense though
Man, after AW2 comes out, I hope Sam Lake gives some interview or something about the writing process. I'm curious if this episode was made to foreshadow the Cult, or if they just watched it again when figuring out AW2's story and thought they could use these ideas.
I think some ideas just get expanded upon. That they like the narrative beat but then revisit it to try and expand the idea.
This is the ritual to lead you on, he returns and you in turn are locked in the room.
Your friends will meet him when you are gone.
Alright, I'd like to make a suggestion: Have you considered covering Bioshock on this channel? The first two games alone are dripping with psychology, theology, and philosophy talking points you could do videos on.
I LOVE Bioshock! I would absolutely love to cover it once done of my current projects are wrapped up.
I'm waiting for your future content when Alan Wake 2 drops.
Dude when Alan Wake 2 drops we will be going crazy over here with the content!
@@GamingUniversityUoG I'm expecting you to break down literally everything in that game. Down to the floorboards in rundown buildings. Thank you for all the hard work👍
It’s a genuine crime this channel doesn’t have more attention.
We'll see what happens with all the Alan Wake 2 attention. I appreciate the sentiment though!
@@GamingUniversityUoG hope it goes well for you!
_Meanwhile, in an alternate universe:_
*The Gaming Professor* : ...And that's why this episode is a metaphor for capitalism.
More like a metaphor for Plutocracy
Oh, I can't stand when people just latch onto anything to talk about their personal political bugbear, regardless of if it makes sense or is in any way unique to that.
Well, you were so off the mark with your assessment of the cult lol
Not really lol. Assessment for the episode itself was correct.
Cult of the tree was just thematic echo. Their reasons for performing the act couldn't be more different though.
I was legit just watching a playthrough of the remaster and the creator (along with myself) was like wtf was the point of this 😅. Thank you for making this!!
Haha you got it dude!
Night Springs: “capitalism be like.”
Im trying to tell you, Alice wake. She is guilty of something. Lol 😂 even when I go over the movie camera altered item. She seems connected to it. Something isn't right with her. I'm trying to let someone know.
