What Does Arthritis of The Knee Joint Look Like?

  • If you have osteoarthritis, you’ll know all about the pain, swelling and stiffness that can be part and parcel of the condition. But what’s actually happening inside the knee?
Here, Dave Duffy, specialist knee surgeon with Yorkshire Knee Clinic, takes a camera into a healthy and an arthritic knee, to demonstrate the clear differences between the two.
𝗡𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗾𝘂𝗲𝗮𝗺𝗶𝘀𝗵: This video features footage from inside the knee.
    You will see:
    • Off-white cartilage and meniscus
    • In the arthritic knee, some of the exposed bone below.
    You won’t see:
    • Blood (because the meniscus doesn’t have its own blood supply)
    • Any part of an active operation

@@afonsomendes92 - Wrong on both counts. Exploratory surgery is a common occurrence where a doctor “explores” to find a diagnosis.. one which may not come up on X-ray or other scans. They may also do this to investigate how a recent procedure is doing. Its’s also quite possible that the video you watched was a perfectly healthy knee, but they were in there for a different procedure.
Practicing on cadavers is also very legal and commonplace. You know that “donate” checkbox on your DL? Well, body parts get harvested and it’s not unusual to have some bodies donated to schools and hospitals for “scientific research” which includes practice and educational demonstrations.

I served almost three decades in the US Army and am a retired Paratrooper and combat veteran. I spent my first 11+ years of service on jump status, and afterwards served in other types of Infantry units. In these units, much like when I was on jump status, we would often conduct long marches with full, 80 plus pounds, rucksacks. My knees are shot and have both been diagnosed as having osteoarthritis (that is just the knees and is just the tip of the iceberg of the orthopedic and spinal problems I deal with). I have had 4 torn meniscus repairs and one ACL repair on the right, and one torn meniscus repair on the left. I understand what the things you show here feel like. It is great to now have a better visualization of just what it looks like in my knees.

Not to be a bummer, I’m not as qualified as a doctor but I do have a kinesiology degree. You’re 19 dude. You’re still insanely young. Running, especially on asphalt, is extremely detrimental to your knees. Stick to a track, or power walk on an incline. I know you wanna prove the doctors wrong but if ALL of them are saying the same thing, I’d suggest you follow their advice. While working the muscles, you can potentially aid a damaged ligament, but that doesn’t apply to arthritis bro. Anyway you go, I wish you the best of health in your life.

Most pain goes thru the nerve system and so you get a lot of lower back issues, hip issues and in my case, knee issues and feet problems.
Stretching changed everything, plus I drink a concoction of Tbs of Honey, Tbs of Lemon juice, Tbs of Olive Oil, tsp of Cayenne pepper, tsp of Cinnamon, tsp of Turmeric, 1/2 tsp of nutmeg and a fat dash of black Pepper in a cup of hot water(wait for it to cool because the honey will hold the heat to the roof of your mouth)

Just had a TKR at 49. In 2012 I started to have knee pain, I was 20 years into my military career. You could see my PT scores drop every year from 2010, and by 2015 it was getting pretty bad. That was the last year I actually ran or jogged. 2017 I retired and suffered through the next four years st it just got worse. Last year I was using a cane it was so bad. Six months out, it was no joke, I thought since I had gone through four ACL reconstructions I’d breeze through it. Most painful recovery I’ve ever had, but absolutely totally worth it. I still have a little swelling depending on how much I’m on my feet, but ever day it gets better and stronger. I’m cycling again and can walk with no pain. Looking at other options for my “good knee”. It’s not hurting now, but I’ve had two reconstructions on that one and a few minor injuries, so I know it’s coming.

My knees have been a source of constant pain since, but one gets used to it. Today, my left knee doesn't bend as easily, I can't cross it over my right at a 90 degree anymore. A position that always gave me comfort and eased the pain. Now, if I attempt it, I have to use my hands to get it there and it's painful after a few moments, but even more painful putting it back straight. Nevermind trying to stand. I'm 57 and I walk like a 90 year old man. I think it's time for a replacement.

Go grass fed, head to toe ( including bone marrow, bone broths, and organs), raw and unpasteurised, go pasture only chickens/eggs and pasture pork, go wild caught fish oily fish and shellfish etc. . Also, intermittent fast ! Also, get a shiatsu pillow, and work that scar tissue, stiffness on ligaments, help unblock stuck toxins and fibrin where threre's no more good blood flow. All this will KILL inflamation, and reverse the condition, even rebuild tissue. u gotta trust me on this.

I was in pain yesterday and went to ER department after Gel injections. The physician said if I have any symptoms of infection or excessive pain to follow up or go to the ER. I went to ER due to my new physician expecting and I didn’t want to bother her. The doctor at the ER was abrasive and kept saying “what do you want me to do? Wave a magic wand over your knee?” I cried as the pain was overwhelming. I was worried I had an infection or DVT. However, this doctor thought I wanted drugs. I’m a person who can drink a bud light or a glass of wine and be content. I’ve never EVER experimented with drugs. I was in so much pain and my knee was unstable- I had to ask a nurse/medical assistant to wheel me to my car - the Dr didn’t listen and I walk away with a huge bill and a possible DVT. Something isn’t right and all he could say is it’s arthritis-noting I had an injury, severe effusion, torn meniscus (bucket handle) been through PT and No history of drug use.

What a great job of seeing where the problem lies. I had my left knee replaced years ago. The right knee is approaching that level of wear, but I am having good results rubbing Voltaren on the knee up to four times a day. It is over the counter, available as a generic, and is thought to be safer long-term than taking the parent drug, Meloxicam, orally because it greatly reduces the amount of drug reaching the kidneys. Because of my earlier experiences, I was skeptical of anything short of replacement being effective at reducing knee pain to a manageable level, but this stuff works. I am not a doctor, and you are reading this where any fool can post an opinion, but you might ask your doctor about it.

All I can say is, both my knees are shot and the pain which varies from day to day can be excruciating, had I known this would be the result of all the juvenile sport & training we did I would not advise anyone to start their kids off early in running sports. Low impact only.

So many people in the comments saying they'll never workout again or will cancel their gym membership. That's literally the EXACT opposite of what you want to do... Main benefit of resistance training (lifting weights, calisthenics, etc.) is increased bone density and joint strength over time. On top of that if you don't move like the body was always meant to, you're movement patterns will suck, your posture will suck, and you will be in constant pain and discomfort (all you work at home sedentary folks out there look up "Upper Cross Syndrome").
Don't be dumb. Go workout, fix your shit, move well until you die

How did you get such a clear image? I thought that area of the knee would be covered in blood. I suppose one would suck out the blood somehow and fill it with water?

I just had knee surgery done a couple months ago and the orthopedist said there's only a little blood when they make the incisions. They actually flood your knee with filtered water to make it swell up and make it easier to access the meniscus and joint (think of a sponge). Even though they drain the water when done, your leg absorbs much of that water and it takes about two weeks for the body to absorb all that excess water.

@Joseph Spencer For me, it was due to too much walking for my job (I work at Intel in a cleanroom and we average 5 miles walking per shift), my age (55), and the onset of arthtritis. An MRI also revealed a torn miniscus, so the surgery removed the tear and scraped off the extra dangly bits inside my knee.

I'm 60 and have arthritis in my knee. Two years ago walking long distances became almost unbearable. My doctor said to wait until short distances become painful before having replacement surgery because in 5 - 6 years I'd probably need the surgery again. Got a 2nd opinion and was told the same thing.

For starters, you need to talk to your doctor about it. They typically don't do both knees at once though, it reduces your mobility too much at one time.
