It eventually comes down to dudes humping 'jos. Was with M109 self propelled guns in the 3/11th ACR. No digging in spades. Wheel in on the aiming stakes, drop spades and back up. Made this process seem way slow. We could pull off the road and be putting steel down range in about 8 1/2 minutes.
I will stay with the 8 Inch Self Propelled Howitzer M - 110-A 1 . We would have been laid and safe and had 6 rounds down range before they were laid and safe.
They seriously need some type of artillery protection unit Because during unloading and setting up they are extremely open to heavy enemy counterattack from ground or air
May I ask you, as you served in Korea, about the accuracy of such weapons? I distinctly remember a report where a howitzer on the other side of a hill, out of sight of the action, could hot within a yard or 2 from the coordinates given. I was impressed to say the least. Thanks in advance.
