My daddy always made this and kept a bowl in the refrigerator for all meals! I’m glad I found this! Not sure if he made exactly like this but sounds like it!

It's funny how different these kinds of recipes evolve from various families.
My granny used about half that much sugar and twice as much cider vinegar. The water was about the same, except she used 1/2 warm (to dissolve the sugar) and the other 1/2 ice cold (with ice cubes) so she could immerse the cucumber and onion right away.
Over the years I've learned to use my mandolin to slice everything, and sometimes I'll add one clove of elephant garlic sliced paper thin. (which is very mild like a leek)
The 'hint' of garlic adds a nice touch to this salad.
    Thanks for the video!

I miss my grandmother. She was such a sweet old lady. She would cry if we didn't eat when we came to visit her.

Yum! My grandma taught me to soak my cucumbers and onions in salted ice water for about an hour on the counter. It keeps the cucumbers crisp .💜

Nice presentation of an old classic with some great secret tips from you and grandma. Eat them fresh, the next day, next week and then extend the brine with a new batch. That Ginsu knife from the 1990's is one of my favorites that I use even today in 2015. Made me smile. Thanks : )

What mine did, which makes a difference, is put the thin sliced salted cucumbers and onions in a bowl place a plate over the cucumbers and put a bowl on the plate, let set over night in fridg. in morning remove bowl of water, keep plate on and dump cucumber water off the mixture. This allows the cucumbers to adsorb the vinegar sugar mixture instead of just coating them.

Come to think on it, she used to heat up the sugar, vinegar to melt the sugar and make it a little thicker then she cooled it off before adding to the mixture.

This was old favorite my grandma made for me too (right along side "gravy lettuce"...aka cabbage with gravy) I just made some of this for myself, my own recipe though. Just guessed and mixed together sugar, salt, vinegar, water and of course cucumbers and onions. I though it was just something weird she put together, I didn't know others had it! Thanks for the video and more exact recipe!
