adobe cancelled my Photoshop serial number since it was a stand alone program that I had purchase, a legit copy from a big name store. They refused to fix the problem and pretty much told me I needed to sign up for subscriptions and deal with it. I gave them a few colorful responses back and bought affinity. Big fan of affinity, love the program.
I spent a bit of time with Affinity and I am really loving it. I did the same thing with Capture One over Lightroom. So now I am officially 100% Adobe free.
Thanks, very instructive and helpful. My drawback is that I’m using the iPad app which does all the same things but I’ve got to look for where the “buttons” are. I’ve used Photoshop for years and am finding that, for me, Affinity is a perfect replacement and I’m working hard to come up to speed. Your videos are helping me do that.
Serif's apps are amazing but masking is the one tool I haven't quite been able to figure out by intuition but this tutorial helped a lot. Many thanks!! It's a complicated tool but now I see how Affinity designed it with non-destructiveness in mind, and this makes me happy.
Pressing the 'mask' icon will get you a white mask and reveal 100% of the curves adjustement. Under Version 1.8 you have to press the Alt key + Mask icon to generate a black mask.
Best wishes from Scotland to Ezra! Thank you for the excellent tutorial. I've already started the Designer course which I recently purchased along with your eBook. I can recommend it to all. Great tip creating a group to use the same mask. Tried it a couple of times but got the order wrong, only getting it to work when I remembered to create the adjustment first, then the mask! And I totally agree with other comments here: Whilst I don't hate Adobe - I bought CS2 student edition back in the day - I was none too pleased with the complete lack of support when I bought a new PC with Windows 7, only to be told it was not compatible with CS2 and that I should upgrade to the latest version. Hey, it's not like I'm a professional photographer, and I was completely happy with CS2. Long story short, after searching through forums, I did manage to find a workaround using regedit - defo not for the uninitiated - and was able to continue using Photoshop until I bought a new camera. Camera raw didn't recognise my D7200 NEF files. More planned obsolescence! And then along came subscription. Goodbye Adobe! Again thanks for making Affinity fun and accessible to dunces like me!

TFS this tut on additional masking techniques, Ally. Improving my skills like this should help me in many ways. I'm going to follow you along and try it on some flowers or something. Take care. Thinking of Ezra too.
When I select the "Curves" adjustment, I notice my square in the Layers is White? I adjust my curve, using your photo as a follow along, and then I close out the curves box. I then "Group" as you showed, then when I "Option/Alt & Click on Mask", I get a pixel layer. The thing that stood out with your tutorial and my Affinity, is that when you select "Curves" your box is black, and mine is white? How do I change that to mimic yours. I will have to say that when I select Curves, the box is Black for a split second, then it turns white. I know this video is a few years old, but your other videos have really helped me A LOT, and I hope you can help me with this too.
Can you create a mask with the smart selection tool and then apply adjustments to that? Seems like it could be a faster method than painting things on. Thanks!
Yes you can. For some things, it's better to make selection and then apply a mask, and for other things it's better to apply a mask and then paint on it. It depends on how difficult the area is to select, and whether or not the selection tool can accurately select that area.
I'm trying to find a way to isolate a mask with red (same view as the quick mask option) for a mask that already exists. Your trick that shows the mask in black and white is great, but is there a way to see it as a red overlay like the Quick Mask?
Hmm... You could load your mask as a selection, and then go into quick mask mode. I don't think that's exactly what you want, but it's the closest thing I can think of.
I bought Affinity Photo over a year ago. I am strictly an amateur, but I want to learn more. Your video was excellent. Thank you! I still use Photoshop Elements for certain corrections, but Affinity Photo is definitely more powerful and versatile.

Hi... I am wondering how best to set up my Wacom and pen for painting with Affinity Photo Desktop. I'd love to see a tutorial on that and painting on a clipping mask.

I really like your videos, and Ezra's.....you two are awesome. And you guys are soooo positive, and bright. Hope to see you. Really appreciate it. Be blessed.
Nice video. How do I make an adjustment, like curves, levels etc, to a SPECIFIC mask only? When I have the mask selected, then going to the adjustment, it creates a new adjustment layer for the entire image. I need this when using luminosity mask often used in landscape photography. Thanks.
@@AffinityRevolution Thanks. That is such a bummer. Can just create a new grayscale image edit as needed and just place it somehow in the mask when I am done? I really need that feature for finely selective masking. I really want to ween myself out of Adobe, of which Photoshop is the hardest one. Affinity is the best hope right now.
Thank you for your great tut! Could you please explain, how you got the black mask on top in 1:44? If I click the icon, that you click on in the video in 1:44, something else happens in my case (a new mask opens). Surely I'm doing something wrong.
For the gradient mask, if you want to change the gradient later, is it nondestructive? Further, is it possible to add multiple gradients to the same curves layer (if I wanted to brighten different spots of the image)?
You can only add one gradient at a time, and it is destructive. Hopefully they change that in the future. For now, I like to add a gradient, and then use the paintbrush to paint over extra areas on my mask.
Black paints the adjustment out. White paints the adjustment in. If that's not working for you, post your question with a screenshot on the Affinity forums. Someone there can take a look at it. 😊 forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/
very good always very technical. can you help me? i just installed affinity photo also on mac but when i create a mask layer i don't see the preview in the icon but i see a gray circle and i don't understand why. a thousand thanks
Sorry, I'm not sure what's happening. I recommend you ask on the official Affinity forums: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/
Good stuff. is it possible to import a mask from black and white image form a 3D render. In Photoshop you can just select it and paste it into an alpha channel. Then control click the alpha channel and it makes a selection on the image but does not seem to work in affinity.
I have not done that before. Affinity does have channels you can use for selections though, perhaps those can be useful for you? ruclips.net/video/aUbrUtnTgvo/видео.html

How to edit the mask itself with curves? edit. Okay, I got it, for some reason I was not able to make the drag and drop feature working before, but yeah, you can drop the curves adjustment layer to the mask and it works.
@@AffinityRevolution Thank. And btw, you guys are having a nice channel here. Typically when ever I have some Affinity related problem, I find out that you are already are having a video about it. :p
I'm a mask beginner, and once I learn some basics, this might be helpful. I also need to learn about groups and why you click the option key so much with layers.
Hmm... I don't Affinity has that option. But if you really want to do that, you could hold down Alt and click on the mask icon to load a greyscale version of it, take a screenshot, load that screenshot into Affinity, and then sample a color from there. A real work around, but doable.
The thing I find a bit frustrating with AP is I can't use the gradient tool multiple times on a image or layer multiple times, it keeps redrawing the gradient unlike Photoshop that will grad on top of grad savings having multiple layers.
I just did a very similar exercise on the iPad version from the Beginner’s book, grouping adjustments and applying them to a mask layer to change an eye colour.
Fantastic video, as always. Thank you so much. From here, "the land of commentaries", we send good vibrations for your husband 😀 Regards to both of you ☮
Thank you. Love your Tutorials. You have such a lovely way to teach. And those who gives you thumbs down should pay double and triple for their Adobe cloud subscription.
When I select the MASK, BOTH the mask and the group icon light up. I can't select the mask by itself, maybe there's a setting but for now, AP just creates a new raster layer and I can't paint on the mask.
After using Adobe since the early 90s I was sceptical about Affinity, especially with the huge price difference. Don't doubt it for a second, Affinity suite is just as powerful and dare I say it, better at handling RAW files.
I was trying to create a png from a photo... But I don't know how to invert Mask layer... It's seems like you are only able to choose from start... Is it black or white Mask layer...
Hello! Thank you for this tutorial! I’m sorry if this was asked and answered, but what brush is the best to use for this? I’m trying to use the airbrush option, but I can see the edge fairly clearly even at 0% hardness. Also, I am using the iPad version if this makes a difference.
I just use the regular brush at 0% hardness. With 0% hardness, that's strange you can still see the edge clearly... I'd post your question with a screenshot on the Affinity forums: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/43-affinity-on-ipad-questions/
I just bought the software at a 50% discount. Pissed off by the adobe subscription model. For a hobbyist photographer, the cost just does not make sense. Keep the tutorials coming.
I tried using MASK LAYER and when I paint white, it started showing up the layer beneath and when I started painting black, it continued to show the layer beneath rather than covering the layer. So why am I facing this issue ?
I'm not sure... that should not happen. I'd ask on the official Affinity forums, and see if anyone on there knows why. forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/
Awesome video like always 😁 quick question, i know there is a video on how to create 3d texts in affinity designer, but will you guys do another like in more deep explanation, like glossy, shiny finishes on letters, etc... Thank you 😊
Help! I have been following your tutorial with the downloaded image. After creating the mask and selecting the brush, nothing happens. I have tried to select white for the brush but nothing happens. Any suggestions? I love your tutorials, just bought the one for iPad.
I'd make sure your brush's flow and opacity are set to 100% in the context toolbar. If that's not the problem, feel free to send a screenshot of your work in Affinity to my email address, and I'll try to take a look. 🙂support@affinityrevolution.com
Hi Ally, quick Q, when you adjust your hue slider, your slider moves and the color doesn't. My color slides with the slider. It still changes the hue but it's really annoying. Is this a settings issue? If so how do I change it? Thanks, Greg
Hmm... I'm not sure why ours are acting differently. I am just using the default settings Affinity comes with. I would try asking on the official forums: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/
If you click on the mask icon, you can invert it by pressing command/Ctrl + I. Or you can hold down alt/option while clicking on the mask icon, and it will be created as a black mask. :)
I'm new to editing I chose Affinity because I didn't want to get perpetually robbed by Adobe, being new to photo editing I find it's a complicated program. I don't know if the version I'm using is different from the one used in the video but the available list options are not the same which makes it impossible for a new photo editor to follow.
Hmm.. the options in the current version are still the same (as far as I know). What part of the video are you trying to follow, and how is what you're seeing different? I'd love to help if I can! :)
@@AffinityRevolution Again please excuse my limited knowledge but the panel on the right side looks different from what I'm seeing. You have Layers and Color and a color wheel pops up when you select the Color tab. I have Adjustments Layers Effects Styles Stock on the right side panel and no Color tab. The color tab is at the top on my version. But I don't see a color wheel when I select it. I can't select black to change the shading on the gradient tool. Everything looks different on my version. Once the versions change and the panels are moved the tutorials are of no use to a novice trying to learn the software. A revolution consist of new Ideas promoting a new system, I'm sure it won't hurt to have some new "novice photo editors. Just a suggestion, teach it from the least experienced level up rather than top down. Thanks for your reply though.
@@odbphoenix2820 You can reset all of your panels by going to to the top “View” menu, then down to “Studio”, “Reset Studio”. From the same place, you can add or remove any specific panels, to customize your workspace. As for the color wheel, inside the Color Panel, you can click on the hamburger menu at the top right of the panel, and then select "Wheel". :)

Haha thank you! 🤗
When I select the MASK, BOTH the mask and the group icon light up. I can't select the mask by itself, maybe there's a setting but for now, AP just creates a new raster layer and I can't paint on the mask.
This video at 0:51 shows how to select the mask layer. ruclips.net/video/KyHvT_dfJ54/видео.html
Just a beginner - downloaded image into new Chrome tab but how please do I get image from chrome tab into affinity ??
Save the photo to your computer (right click on it, then press Save As). Then open Affinity Photo, and go to File, Open. 🙂
Ally, you are amazing..Thank you very much for this wonderful video ! (liked & subscribed)
Thank you Ahmad! 😊
After using Adobe since the early 90s I was sceptical about Affinity, especially with the huge price difference. Don't doubt it for a second, Affinity suite is just as powerful and dare I say it, better at handling RAW files.
Welcome to Affinity Photo! 😄
Is it just me, but her voice is so soothing
Aww, thank you Leslie! 🤗
Amazing results
Thank you Warren! 😊
I was trying to create a png from a photo... But I don't know how to invert Mask layer... It's seems like you are only able to choose from start... Is it black or white Mask layer...
You can invert a mask at any time. Just press on the mask layer's icon, and then press Ctrl + I (PC) or Command + I (Mac) to invert it. :)
great tutorial ,, love it ..👍
Thank you! 🤗
Thank you again for sharing such amazing content about Affinity! Your instructions are always clear and precise!!
Thank you again! 😊
I just bought the software at a 50% discount. Pissed off by the adobe subscription model. For a hobbyist photographer, the cost just does not make sense. Keep the tutorials coming.
Nice! Affinity is a waaaay better deal than Adobe...
Another great tutorial - many thanks
Thank you! 😊
Super helpful video
Thank you! 😊
Awesome video like always 😁 quick question, i know there is a video on how to create 3d texts in affinity designer, but will you guys do another like in more deep explanation, like glossy, shiny finishes on letters, etc... Thank you 😊
Maybe at some point, but we're focusing on making Affinity Photo and Affinity Publisher tutorials right now. Good idea though!
Thank you so much for this! Excellent job!
You're welcome! Glad you liked it. 😊
Can these techniques be used on the IPad version?
Yes they can. 😊
Hi.. when i applied a mask to the group , what i got was a white mask and not a black one. How do i change the mask to black.
If you click on the mask icon, you can invert it by pressing command/Ctrl + I. Or you can hold down alt/option while clicking on the mask icon, and it will be created as a black mask. :)
Does anyone know if I buy Affinity photo for my Mac whether that allows me to use it on my iPad?
They are two separate purchases. Still a really great deal though! 😊
You guys amazing. Thank you!
Thank you! 😄
Nicely paced - as usual!
Thank you! 😊
I really enjoyed the tutorial.. Thank you so much and keep on uploading new tuts! :D
Thank you! Glad you liked it. 😊
you're amaizng! thank you!
Thank you! I'm glad you liked the video. 😊
Such a great tutorial host! 🙌🏻⚡️💪🏻💥💻👍🏻
Aww! Thank you! 🤗
Usually I can figure out how to do these desktop tutorials on my iPad. But not this time. Is it possible on the iPad?
The iPad version can have grouped masks and gradient masks, but as far as I know, you can't view a black and white preview of the mask. 🤷♀️
Affinity Revolution, In Layers Studio, select the mask, tap on the eclipses icon in the top left, tap on the “Solo” circle under the blend mode 👍
Thanks for your reply
though.
Brilliantly simple, thanks
Thank you! 😊
