She' the female Bob Ross I swear, her voice alone is refreshing and she naturally has that happy feeling when she's working. SHe's the ONLY ONE ON RUclips that explains this stuff in Lamen English!
Anything that's not Adobe gets a big thumbs up from me! Good to see people using alternative software to get things done because big corps only listen when we don't buy their goods.
adobe cancelled my Photoshop serial number since it was a stand alone program that I had purchase, a legit copy from a big name store. They refused to fix the problem and pretty much told me I needed to sign up for subscriptions and deal with it. I gave them a few colorful responses back and bought affinity. Big fan of affinity, love the program.
I spent a bit of time with Affinity and I am really loving it. I did the same thing with Capture One over Lightroom. So now I am officially 100% Adobe free.
Serif's apps are amazing but masking is the one tool I haven't quite been able to figure out by intuition but this tutorial helped a lot. Many thanks!! It's a complicated tool but now I see how Affinity designed it with non-destructiveness in mind, and this makes me happy.
Thanks, very instructive and helpful. My drawback is that I’m using the iPad app which does all the same things but I’ve got to look for where the “buttons” are. I’ve used Photoshop for years and am finding that, for me, Affinity is a perfect replacement and I’m working hard to come up to speed. Your videos are helping me do that.
Creativity can always advance with a new tip or tool. I'm still learning and enjoying the creative process with all the Affinity products. The learning continues and manifests into something beautiful.
Best wishes from Scotland to Ezra! Thank you for the excellent tutorial. I've already started the Designer course which I recently purchased along with your eBook. I can recommend it to all. Great tip creating a group to use the same mask. Tried it a couple of times but got the order wrong, only getting it to work when I remembered to create the adjustment first, then the mask! And I totally agree with other comments here: Whilst I don't hate Adobe - I bought CS2 student edition back in the day - I was none too pleased with the complete lack of support when I bought a new PC with Windows 7, only to be told it was not compatible with CS2 and that I should upgrade to the latest version. Hey, it's not like I'm a professional photographer, and I was completely happy with CS2. Long story short, after searching through forums, I did manage to find a workaround using regedit - defo not for the uninitiated - and was able to continue using Photoshop until I bought a new camera. Camera raw didn't recognise my D7200 NEF files. More planned obsolescence! And then along came subscription. Goodbye Adobe! Again thanks for making Affinity fun and accessible to dunces like me!
TFS this tut on additional masking techniques, Ally. Improving my skills like this should help me in many ways. I'm going to follow you along and try it on some flowers or something. Take care. Thinking of Ezra too.
Pressing the 'mask' icon will get you a white mask and reveal 100% of the curves adjustement. Under Version 1.8 you have to press the Alt key + Mask icon to generate a black mask.
I really like your videos, and Ezra's.....you two are awesome. And you guys are soooo positive, and bright. Hope to see you. Really appreciate it. Be blessed.
I bought Affinity Photo over a year ago. I am strictly an amateur, but I want to learn more. Your video was excellent. Thank you! I still use Photoshop Elements for certain corrections, but Affinity Photo is definitely more powerful and versatile.
Fantastic video, as always. Thank you so much. From here, "the land of commentaries", we send good vibrations for your husband 😀 Regards to both of you ☮
Thank you. Love your Tutorials. You have such a lovely way to teach. And those who gives you thumbs down should pay double and triple for their Adobe cloud subscription.
When I select the "Curves" adjustment, I notice my square in the Layers is White? I adjust my curve, using your photo as a follow along, and then I close out the curves box. I then "Group" as you showed, then when I "Option/Alt & Click on Mask", I get a pixel layer. The thing that stood out with your tutorial and my Affinity, is that when you select "Curves" your box is black, and mine is white? How do I change that to mimic yours. I will have to say that when I select Curves, the box is Black for a split second, then it turns white. I know this video is a few years old, but your other videos have really helped me A LOT, and I hope you can help me with this too.
I just bought all of your courses on Photo, Designer, Publisher. I so hope I can use these new skills to increase my productivity and no longer need to hire from Fiverr. Can you and Ezra pls do a video on how to make 3D book covers for KDP?
I just bought the software at a 50% discount. Pissed off by the adobe subscription model. For a hobbyist photographer, the cost just does not make sense. Keep the tutorials coming.
I'm trying to find a way to isolate a mask with red (same view as the quick mask option) for a mask that already exists. Your trick that shows the mask in black and white is great, but is there a way to see it as a red overlay like the Quick Mask?
Hmm... You could load your mask as a selection, and then go into quick mask mode. I don't think that's exactly what you want, but it's the closest thing I can think of.
I'm a mask beginner, and once I learn some basics, this might be helpful. I also need to learn about groups and why you click the option key so much with layers.
Can you create a mask with the smart selection tool and then apply adjustments to that? Seems like it could be a faster method than painting things on. Thanks!
Yes you can. For some things, it's better to make selection and then apply a mask, and for other things it's better to apply a mask and then paint on it. It depends on how difficult the area is to select, and whether or not the selection tool can accurately select that area.
We have a beginner's guide that I think you will really enjoy. You can check it out here: courses.affinityrevolution.com/p/affinity-photo-for-beginners 😊
The thing I find a bit frustrating with AP is I can't use the gradient tool multiple times on a image or layer multiple times, it keeps redrawing the gradient unlike Photoshop that will grad on top of grad savings having multiple layers.
Ugh. That's RUclips being dumb. Sometimes the lipstick video shows up, and sometimes it doesn't. 😬 Here's a link to the video: ruclips.net/video/pbYVFmxO87U/видео.html
Hi... I am wondering how best to set up my Wacom and pen for painting with Affinity Photo Desktop. I'd love to see a tutorial on that and painting on a clipping mask.
How to edit the mask itself with curves? edit. Okay, I got it, for some reason I was not able to make the drag and drop feature working before, but yeah, you can drop the curves adjustment layer to the mask and it works.
@@AffinityRevolution Thank. And btw, you guys are having a nice channel here. Typically when ever I have some Affinity related problem, I find out that you are already are having a video about it. :p
After using Adobe since the early 90s I was sceptical about Affinity, especially with the huge price difference. Don't doubt it for a second, Affinity suite is just as powerful and dare I say it, better at handling RAW files.

That’s the best explanation of masks I’ve heard; Thank You!
Glad it was helpful! 😊
You two are my favorite video tutorial gurus!
Thank you Kat! 🤗
The mask view trick (using alt to check what you have/haven't already masked) is brilliant! Thanks!
Thank you Joey! Glad you liked it. 😊

Masking is definitely one of the trickiest things to do in Affinity Photo, but after a while, it becomes totally natural 😊
Great video! Thank you for Stepping in for Erza...hope he is feeling better day by day.
Thank you Robbin! 😊
Y'all are among the best Affinity youtubers! Thanks!
Thank you! 😊
Thanks for this tutorial! For iPad user, that mask trick is done with layer options -- solo. This trick really helps a lot.

Transferring the skills to the iPad does take a little bit of patience. It will become second nature after a little bit of practice though. 😊

Thanks for this. Masks have been a really counterintuitive thing for me.
They take some practice to get, that's for sure. But they are sooo useful once you get the hang of them. Keep practicing! 😊
