    Boy I came across this channel in my effort to learn Affinity but the absolutely delightful and pleasant and very, very clear way these are presented by Ally is outstanding. I love the information I've already learned but the positive and well-paced way Ally does this makes this one of the best "learning" channels I've ever come across.

    Thank you so much for this video - quick question, why does blur only apply to the edges of the mask layer but applies to the whole the pixel layer?

    • @AffinityRevolution
      @AffinityRevolution  3 года назад +1

      The blur is actually being applied to the whole mask, but the only noticeable change occurs on the edges of the mask. That's because the rest of the mask is solid white or black, so blurring those areas makes no difference (black blurred with black is still black). Confusing, I know!

  • @ricardoh.sakuma9062
    @ricardoh.sakuma9062 4 года назад +1

    I managed to do that. But, I still don’t understand why it worked out. When you apply the blur layer as a child layer of the mask, it shouldn’t blur the entire man? Because it should affect the entire white space of the mask (whole body). Why it blurs just the edges, I don’t get it

    • @AffinityRevolution
      @AffinityRevolution  4 года назад +1

      If the blur is a child layer to the mask, then only the mask will be blurred, not the photo. Most of a mask is pure black or pure white, so not much changes, only the edges of the mask, which will blur the white and black parts of the mask. Sorry, it's kind of confusing!

      Back in the day with photoshop, the pen tool was the only thing reliable enough to make clear selections. In addition, there are times when you want to save the selection as a clipping mask and use it another program. The pen tool is still the most accurate is slower but really tight.

      The blur filter is effecting the MASK, which is why it does not blur the man. The filter is blurring the border of the mask, where it transition from white to black. Sorry it's a little confusing!

    I use pen tool select then select mask then color black. Insteadd of erasing picture color it paints black - what might be going wrong.

    I use affinity photo on IPad and every time I apply a blur layer it doesn’t show as a layer instead it just apply to the picture directly? So I can’t make any changes to the blur layer as you did in the video. May you give me some suggestion?

    • @AffinityRevolution
      @AffinityRevolution  3 года назад +1

      Before you press the apply button for the filter, press the lightning bolt icon down in the menu at the bottom. That will turn the filter into a "live layer", which you can edit afterwards. 😊

    I’m trying to weave 2 capital letters on top of each to make a logo, a watermark. I know I can put one on top of the other, but I want it to look like it’s weaved together. Any ideas or tutorials on this?

      This isn't exactly what you're trying to do, but it shows a technique you could use: ruclips.net/video/sfgv3wEtpQI/видео.html

    What am I doing wrong? After successfully selecting just the object, masking it without using the pen tool for tweaking because I can't get that to work, I tried to export my selected masked object as an image without background which looked good. Only to have a background show up when I imported it into my Photos library? I can't get rid of the background. I need the planets without the background in my Photos Library but even when I export them as PNG files I still have a background.

    • @AffinityRevolution
      @AffinityRevolution  5 лет назад

      The Photos app might be showing you a temporary background. Try opening your exported image in Affinity Photo to see if the background is really gone or not.

    Thank you Ally, that was another great one. I’ve always been plagued with difficulties when selecting hair. I don’t always get great selections even after the refine step. Another tough one are trees. When the sky shows through the leaves and branches, and you are trying to change the sky, it can be very tedious and frustrating. 😨🤯

    • @AffinityRevolution
      @AffinityRevolution  5 лет назад

      Very true. Working with trees/a messy background can make the selection process MUCH more difficult. We're working on a selection course that will cover tricky topics like that, but no matter what tools you have, it's still hard to make a selection with hair and trees! 😅

    Would this work in design also

    • @AffinityRevolution
      @AffinityRevolution  5 лет назад

      In Affinity Designer? Yes, you can do the same thing. The only weird thing is that you need to draw a SHAPE with the pen tool, and then make a selection of the shape by holding down command/ctrl, and then clicking on its layer thumbnail icon.

      Hmmm... it's hard for me to know what's going wrong without being able to see your screen. I'd post your question with a screenshot on the Affinity forums: forum.affinity.serif.com/index.php?/forum/5-affinity-on-desktop-questions-mac-and-windows/

    when you do the masking selection, is there a way to feather the selection like for hair etc

    • @AffinityRevolution
      @AffinityRevolution  5 лет назад

      Yes, you can refine your selection by pressing "Refine" in the context toolbar (it will be an option when you have a selection tool out).

    • @AffinityRevolution
      @AffinityRevolution  4 года назад +1

      I recommend you make a selection, apply a mask to that selection, make another selection, and then use that selection to add to the mask you created earlier. That's what we do in this video. 😊

    Selection Brush Tool: It does not appear in Round as it appears in Square. So how to fix?

    • @AffinityRevolution
      @AffinityRevolution  2 года назад

      If your brush size is too small, it will appear as a cross hair icon. Maybe that is what's happening to you?
