The difference between Bristol in 1985 and Bristol today is astounding.
IKR!!!
And the racing was better
This was the first race I ever attended. My cousin and I sat on the dirt bank coming out of turn 4.
No more dirt embankments anymore...
😆
gotta be wild considering how different the track looks now
Awesome memories
Doing interviews while they're in the car fixing damage. What a time to be alive lol
I am astounded by how open it looks.
It was best sitting on the hill on a blanket till they turned it into the hillbilly bowl
Yep I'm from bristol I've watched the race track grow into what it is an destroyed the land an area around it
Well it sure is a fun race track!
They kept saying this was Richard Petty's 400th start... it was his 400th CONSECUTIVE start going back to '71. It was 900-something overall. He ran his 1000th Grand National/Winston Cup race in '86.
2:34:30
This is the third time watching this race can't get enough
Boy I wish Nascar was still like this this is racing boys im glad I can go back and watch this it was the way it was meant to be
Same this era is a lot more exciting then todays stuff it’s so boring now
Back than Bristol didn't have enough seating like today does
The cool thing about this for me is that it looks like a local short track race, but with some of the top oval talent in the country at the time. Awesome post!
Jack Arute stepping onto pit road to interview DW while the pitstop is going on is priceless.
That was the biggest "dang they did it differently back then" for me 😂😂😂
Now this is a throwback race!
Those old cars are so much more fun to watch. You can really see the differences in the setup of the cars watching them go through the corners.
wow i didn't realize this was bristol.
i'm a scottish fan who's only been watching for about 10 years and this is the first time ive really watched old races. i can't believe the difference here.
You outa live in Bristol they ruined the whole area an race track after boss hogg bought it in 96 this is the real Bristol. Bristol international raceway had 36 degrees of banking 10 feet narrower than now an asphalt in the middle of the country side .this the real bristol.the worlds fastesthalf mile oval ..boss hogg bought it the state put a dam highway in an tore the mountains down around it for parking an bosshogg decided to make it 10 feet wider an drop the banking down to 24 degrees an ruin the place.atleast he didn't pur a dam dog Legg in the front straight to make it a mini Charlotte like he wanted to
Yeah I can’t believe how different the place looked back then.
First Bristol race to be televised!! Nice.
Young folks..............THIS WAS NASCAR..............REAL CARS
I believe about 50 laps in Earnhardt lost power steering!! Just imagine running 450 more laps with no power steering!! What a badass
That is how they use to drive back in the day.
Granted the steering wheel are larger also...
They were also slower, had smaller tires and less aggressive suspension geometry. Makes a big difference and necessitates power steering
I know right! The drivers today are so pussified they would've dropped out the moment that went out, Earnhardt didn't. Earnhardt did everything it took to win.
@@GretaVanZeppelin1996 i guess you havent seen clint bowyers roval race last year
@@calebBalls69 nascar is a joke now
54:45 Bobby Allison breaks his steering wheel, borrows one from Phil Parsons. One of the crazier things I've seen in nascar.
That was friggin awesome. 😂😂😂
Finally a full version . The only other copy of this race is the ESPN Classic version with a chunk of the action cut out
Great action from start to finish!
Man oh man this past Fall night race weekend at Bristol was the best I have gotten to see live since 2012. My parents couldnt afford tickets most of the time but i went to my first cup race in 07 been going every year since i was 16 and could buy my own
I was at that race when Bristol was Bristol and Harry Gant was the Skoal Bandit
Nice that this is available. One of the first cup races I witnessed.
Thanks NASCAR for the upload.
Watching in March of 2023..Can't believe that is Bristol..
Wow, race cars that look like street cars, what a concept, NASCAR should watch these.
Now this is NASCAR!
Dale Earnhardt: “One Tough Customer”. Great race!
I was there went to Bristol about 5 times in the 80's .first one was Darrell going for 8 on a row. Think about it he won 7 straight there 3500 laps at that beast.
I was with a sweet girl name Nancy
she made 2 trips there and I think one to Talladega. Great racing and a great time.
Go to 2:25:00 and watch the Ronnie Thomas interview. The best part of this race.
These cars were so much harder to control, it's incredible. Sure cars today go faster, but it's still not as exciting as seeing these cars bump and slide around. Real drivers.
God I miss the 80s I was 11 years old in 85
So was I. I'd like to go back to the 70's and work my way up.
THANK YOU NASCAR!
3:06:00 restart and then an awesome battle for the lead
My first race was in April 1977 at Bristol. It was still a very Rural area at the time and Bristol was still a small track, My last race was in April 1998 here and the track had changed so much. Just not what it was in 77,
LOL "C'mon Earnhardt get over there"
My dad grew up in Bristol. I visited the town and racetrack for the first time last year. The track looks nothing like this 1985 version. lol
I the more I watch nascar the more k miss dale
**POINTS STANDINGS and WINS before the 1985 SOUTHEASTERN 500 (5 of 28):**
#5 Geoff Bodine (618pts, GM)
#12 Neil Bonnett (-30 with 1 win, GM)
#44 Terry Labonte (-45, GM)
#11 Darrell Waltrip (-49, GM)
#9 Bill Elliott (-75 with 2 wins, Ford)
#3 Dale Earnhardt (-94 with 1 win, GM)
#33 Harry Gant (-97, GM)
#75 Lake Speed (-106, GM)
Ricky Rudd (Ford #15) was in the top16 all season but was only 11th. With similar results, Rusty Wallace (GM #2), the best rookie in 1984, was only 12th. Meanwhile, Bobby Allison (GM #22) finally had his 1st top15 of the season and was 13th almost 200pts behind the leader.
Drivers listed are the season's current top8, last season's top8 plus the rookie of the year before and whatever race winner that doesn't fit any of those 2 descriptions. Yes, I’m using the unsponsored names of the races. In Bristol’s case, the earlier race is the Southeastern 500 while the later one is the Volunteer 500.
Lets bring asphalt back at Bristol, no more stupid ass traction compound
bias ply tires would do the job
THANK YOU.
damn imagine owning that pace car today
when it was cool to go to Bristol
This is how I remember Bristol, My home place!!
It's amazing to see what it is now, compared to this. I lived in Kpt and my Aunt lives in Bristol so I pass it every time I went to her house.
Neil Bonnet talking about ringing his bell after the early wreck! Back then a head injury was not took seriously at all! People would say he’s fine, he just rung his bell!
i love nascar and i cant belive he won with out power steering!
Wow look at bristol.i was their in 85 I live about 5 miles from racetrack.
I Was 9 Years Old when I watched this Race (44 Now)
Need black curtains for the sides of my tv to frame uploads like this to conceal the blurry pillarboxing. The solution that yourlifeisagreatstory responded with isn't much of a solution since if you zoom in to hide the pillarboxing, you're also cutting off the top and bottom of the 4:3 image.
Most [newer/modern] TVs have a zoom or “Format” button/setting that will helps with that issue.
Earnhardt is the goat 🐐anyone who says otherwise knows zero about racing
The facts and data say otherwise and that trumps anything his fans and their personal opinions say.
Earnhardt had the beat car control of any driver and all the old true driver's say the same thing.so stick your stats up your @#$
@@stephenmcdaniel478 Wrong. You will never find Bobby Allison, Cale Yarborough, David Pearson, or others say that. You make things up. The only thing Earnhardt was good at was having fewer DNF's than his competitors. Sucks knowing that Petty has seven Daytona 500's to Sr.s one. Pathetic. The facts prove you wrong and it's hilarious. Lol
jason wiggins Petty had the dominant car for years moron. Earnhardt won his first championship with a small mom and pop team beating Allison, petty, Yarborough, etc later on with RCR he won 6 more championships in what’s been proven to be mid tier equipment. Daytona 500s are a joke, is Michael Waltrip better then Earnhardt since MW won 2 compared to one for Earnhardt? No, so stfu fucktooth
@@nathanielhiggerson7679 Lol!!!! Always excuses. Every NASCAR driver will tell you that the Daytona 500 is the Superbowl of NASCAR racing. The build up is immense and lasts for months. Every team is prepared for that race. RCR mid tier? You're a liar. That was a pathetic response and you know it. That was Chevrolet's top team for decades and got the most factory support. Even a rookie stepped in the car and won two races. You're full of sh*t. Nothing but excuses, and laughable ones at that.
Well put
1980s nascar is Amazing
Yes sir, door handle to door handle.
Could have at least showed the starting lineup. This was 35 years ago.
Exactly I was 35 years ago so you already know who wins
There's an edited ESPN classic version out there that includes the starting lineup.
Ok cool go watch that then
@@ryanvazz1932 I'm replying to someone who asked about the lineup.
Ok good for you
Gran leyenda
26:20 I recall this being on NASCAR on ESPN when they went to Bristol. I thought 1987 at first. No clue it was the 1985 race.
🇺🇸thanks from John Robert Bruffett Junior of United States of America

3:30. TV reporters could just go over the wall and get an interview????!! Wooooow. Cool asf
Lol dangerous af

Thedearster “Cool asf”. Very eloquent. Well thought out.
@@mark_r49 This is NASCAR. There is no need for eloquent or thought out comments.

Crazy to think Bristol really looked like this once upon a time.
Bruton Smith redid the whole thing. More grandstands, suites. Fast forward to today, now they're reducing seats. A world of difference between then to 2008 and then to 2019.
@@EricCox4848
And they should not have over done the seating capacity of this track.... I know I know they kept filling all the seats the added from the mid 80s through 2000s... But a racetrack loses it appeal when it just looks like a bowl... Seeing the nearby hills gave this track it's character. I think this track was at it best in the mid 90s in terms of seating capacity and yet still had enough openings to keep it's character in place too. Nothing wrong with 100,000 seats.
ITS BRISTOL BABY!!
This race took place one year before I was born, damn. I was a hardcore Rusty Wallace fan from the early nineties until he retired, probably didn't miss a lap that he ran for a good 12 years. I could have kept watching if it wasn't for the cookie cutter tracks, stupid points systems, stages and boring drivers.
Old Monte Carlos, Buicks, Chryslers, Fords and Pontiacs with no power steering.
You know you're old when you remember the VHS rewind screen 👩🦳. Plus thanks NASCAR for spoiling who won that race in the description..Watching some classic race while waiting for the '24 season to start.
How about that !!!! Dude wins a race then drives it into the pits and enjoys the win. He acted like...Yep, I been here before !!!
Shut up and have a little fun in your life
Awesome race but i thought that damaged film flashing was going to cause me to develop epilepsy
1985 Valleydale 500 (RAW SATELLITE FEED)
Waltrip's ruled there own that racetrack
@@davidstinson5095 Dale Earnhardt won that race not Darrell Waltrip
Can you upload the 1983 & 1984 Daytona 500s? Thanx for your time & great work.

Note to 2022 Nascar? U want "stock car racing" see the ride heights here? See how up on the wheel these guys were. See all the movement up and down side to side of the suspension? This will get u stock car racing. Bring ride height rules back. Give the cars more character
At 3:13:00 not sure rudd was congratulating dale lol
Weird seeing Bristol without the bleachers all the way around.
2:17:46 the jack thing
He rubs the wall for the first time this race. 42:23
Ok, so I didn't misremember. So many broken parts and busted cars back in the '80's. Given the current era of accidents or the whole engine going bust, and not much in between, it's hilarious to listen to this race about how many cars went busticated.
20:24 is this the first generation of a hans device?
I don’t think 🤔 so but I wouldn’t know I’m too young I wasn’t born yet
Around 2:10:00 they forgot Dale doesn't have power steering and is most likely jus taking it easy to try to rest his arms. Edit: I spoke too soon
Love it, keep uploading!!!
This the same guy whos been announcing NASCAR?
Oh yes! Back when Bristol was good
I love the fact that most of the time the commentators didnt even know they were live yet lol
They weren't, when you hear them talking to each other normal, that was during commercial breaks
Classic
"One day this track will be redone so that it takes 20 laps to complete a pass and you don't even want to know what they do to the cars"
Real men, not like today’s NASCAR.
Power steering means you’re losing about 7 horsepower in the car.
If the belt comes off the power steering pump, you gain horsepower.
That is one very bumpy and uneven track.
3 bumped 9 into the first wreck.
Anyone know where I can find that music at the end of the race? 3:13:20 or something like that
Being so rude to the beetle .. sniff ...
Buick lo mejor
That's when it was racing
There's Dale Earnhardt on the bottom see you latter ❤
wish we could turn back time..

What’s with the 2 tires only during the yellow flag rule I’ve never heard of that rule
Go fomoco 🏁
👍
Earnhardt drove plenty of races without power steering.
At 3:07:00 now thats how u do it lol
Don't call him Sr. Got it Senior?!
Waltrip slides in....SAFE!
