    The Acer Spin 5 takes on the Lenovo Yoga 720 - its available in both 13" and 15" models. Here I unbox the 15" and it comes equipped with a coffee lake 8th gen i7 8550U CPU , quad core, a GTX 1050 4GB, 8 GB RAM and a 1TB Hard drive.
    It has Windows Ink Support
    Full review to follow with a smack down against the Lenovo Yoga 720

    Hi Stephen, great video as always! I just wanted to point out that Lenovo has recently updated their 720 line with a gtx1050 4gb option, so there’s not just the 2gb model anymore :)

    Acer has proven to be a very reliable best buy line. An SSD is easily swapped here if desired. The only gripe i would have is the glossy screen.

      nils 12344 unless it is much cheaper than the yoga 720 I don't recommend it...cpu and slow hard drive let it down. Poor cooling system too. Will film it tomorrow😄

      OWNorDISOWN Tech Decisions Made Easy - My Problem is the lack of the 2GB RAM of the gpu but i dont really can judge if its necessary - also i'd have to buy the i5 one from lenovo(i read a lot of articles but i am Not Sure if i5 or i7 is better) also it has only 256gb ssd instead of the 256gb ssd+1tb harddrive on the spin (i dont know why My version got a ssd aswell) - thanks for replying and helping me to finde my new Laptop haha :P - edit: i would buy Your version of the lenovo instant for the price but in germany it costs 1900€ so 2200$ ... and the spin "just" 1100€ so 1300$.... :/

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      Wow ,that is a huge price difference. The i5 7300HQ is slightly faster than the stock i7 8550U , the latter can be made quicker by increasing its turbo wattage but still behind an i7 7700HQ. Gaming performance is less too because of the poor CPU. Perhaps the surface book 2 gtx 1050 might be a better choice but the CPU on the 15" performs even worse than the one on the Acer Spin 5 , even though it is supposed to be faster. Microsoft limits it to max 31W and typically runs at 16 W versus about 42w on the i5 8550U on the spin 5.
      The yoga 720 remains to be the best value, over here at least.
      My spin 5 only has a 5400rpm hard drive and I cannot see a slot to put an m.2 sad in. The first thing I would do is put in a 2.5" ssd.

      OWNorDISOWN Tech Decisions Made Easy - the surface would Be an Option if i was a billionair haha :D okay hmm than i will rethink ..maybe the lenovo with i5 7300hq gtx1050(2GB) 8gbram and just 256GB ssd - do u know if There is space to upgrade it With a second hdd

      Thanks. I misplaced my Lenovo pen somewhere so I did try the Hawaii mate pen as that is Wacom AES and it didn't work. The Bamboo Pen is great as you can switch between Ntrig and Wacom AES so I used that and it worked OK - I noticed, in my brief testing, that i had to get much closer to the screen to activate the digitizer...

      The Acer Spin 5 has a more powerful GPU and got 80% more performance than the mx150 in the flip 14 in my Timespy test. I also thing it has better pen responsiveness and has a full size SD card reader vs a micro sd card in the flip 14. The flip 14 is much more portable though and I have been using for quite some time as my go to device for taking notes just because of the portability. It can still play games fine and battery life is better (570 mins v 265 mins).

    I am currently sitting on a Spin 5 15’ with the 8550u, GTX 1050 but a 256g ssd. But i haven’t opened it yet so i could still return it. Concerning overall performance, do you think there is major difference between the i7 8550u and i5 8250? Because in benchmarks there is only a slight slight difference, not really worthy of any extra money-spending. Might i be better of with a 8250? (It’s 400$ cheaper) .
    Also reading from the benchmarks: It appears that the 8550u is performing almost as good as the is7700HQ. Is there something i haved missed or is this correct?
    Greetings from Sweden

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      Hi Elias, Thanks for watching my video :) There won't be much difference between the i5 8250u and the i7 8550u, I would definitely save the $400. Good that you have that SSD, it will make it feel much more snappy.
      Once I increased the Turbo Power Max to 45W it was able to reach higher clock speeds for longer periods of time. Short bursts like you get with Cinebench you can see comparable performance as the i7 7700hq but the longer the test, such as if you are rendering a video then the clock rate gradually goes down but as you can see in my handbrake test you still see an improvement.

    So this does support Windows Ink? Every listing I have found on this laptop does not mention it whatsoever, and even Wacom's list of compatible devices for their Bamboo Ink pen does not list this model (along with most other Acer computers). The specs for this one seem almost perfect for what I need, but I have been very hesitant to buy it because of this reason alone since I am looking for something that is not only powerful but also very artist-friendly.
    Been deciding between this and the Lenovo (the i7 i7700HQ with FHD Display to be exact since, according to various sites, there seems to be a common manufacturer defect with 4K and UHD models).
    Have you also had any specific problems when using a pen on this?
    Thank you for the review!

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  7 лет назад

      MaybeOneDayIWillKnow At first , like yourself, I thought it didn't support windows ink. Fortunately there is a big sticker on it that told me it did otherwise I wouldn't have tested it. I think i forgot to put that test in the video, sorry ! It worked great with the bamboo pen. It uses Ntrig technology so i tried the Surface pen but that was very hit an miss so I would not use that pen.
      The yoga 720 with i7 7700hq is more powerful. If you can get a Spin 5 with an SSD that will make it faster. Thanks for watching!

      I know the Nitro Spin 5 computer has an SSD, and it's only about $30 more than the regular Spin with almost the exact same specs. Though again, no idea if that one supports Windows Ink either. Definitely wish Acer would advertise that.

      Hi , Just thought I'd let you know the nitro 5 spin does support windows ink. it doesn't say advertise this feature anywhere but when you boot up you will see that little pen in the task bar. Also I went to microcenter and tried it out and the acer alpha pen worked with it and I got a nuvision windows ink pen for $40 and it works fine, not sure how good it is for art though.

      Not used the Pavillion x360 but have the x350 Envy with AMD 2500u/Vega 8 graphics and that was a nice machine. How about the Asus Zenbook Flip 14? I like that, has the MX150 graphics.

      OWNorDisown thank u for replying so fast... the peoblem is mg local providers only have the acet spin 5 exact model as yours
      .
      and an hp pavilion x360 i5 8250u with 1tb+128gbssd 8gb ram and a 940mx nvidia
      both are roughly at the same price
      i was planning to go for the acer spin but i was kind of disappointed with it when i saw your review of it against the yoga 720 Particularly when u said the 1050gtx is a waste on this laptop

    • @OWNORDISOWN
      @OWNORDISOWN  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, I was disappointed with its performance and its panel was not great either. That being said it will be faster than that 940mx, perhaps it just needed repasting. I would probably go with the spin 5, unless the screen and battery life on the HP is much better..

    • @UisMAD
      @UisMAD 6 лет назад

      so i went Today to my local provider and they had another interesting choice...
      the new 2018 hp envy x360 with a 128 gb ssd and a 1tb hdd, 8gb ram , i7 8th gen and the new mx150 with 4gb
      the hp pavilion x360 has the same specs except the gpu which is the 940mx gb and the cpu which is thr i5 8th gen
      and the price difference is about 350 us dollars... do u think the envy is worth the 350 dollars difference ?
      i really appreciate your insight and quick replies, i apologize if am bothering you with my many questions
      thanks again

      Mohammed Alsir hi , I have the mx150 in my Asus Zenbook flip 14 so it might be a good idea to check out performance numbers there. Certainly capable of playing at 720p . Does it have a TB3 port so you can connect to an eGPU should you need to? It's certainly a viable option 😀

  • @MentalD-Fox

    How many CPU updates is intel launching :)). Not that that is a problem as I am looking for gaming performance I update based on the GPU more then CPU. Now the laptop seems ok as far as build but my mates who deal with laptop repairs say that most of the broken laptops they get are acer so... no ty.

    • @MentalD-Fox

      OWNorDISOWN Tech Decisions Made Easy Could be that what we are getting/ ppl are buying have worse QC, but the problems that seem most common is battery being dead after just a few months, the power input being broken, and dead components from overheating, usually the CPU. I never bought any from them because I was warned of shoddy workmanship by my repair pals. Perhaps newer stuff is better, perhaps ppl are just very rough with their laptops. The thing that put me off them (besides the warnings from pals) was when I went in a few electronics stores to shop for laptops, where asus, dell and others wore cool to mild warm on the keyboard, the ones from acer wore all very hot. Lately i have heard of fewer complains about acer so who knows :)) I will still go for a sager/clevo

      No, its a direct competitor to the Lenovo Yoga 720 as it has pen support. The Nitro is meant to be a gaming machine whilst this is a general laptop, good for work, college and the odd game.

    • @matthewp7667
      @matthewp7667 7 лет назад

      this laptop actualy is exactly the same as the nitro version, but stated on their website, the nitro lacks pen support, wale this one has it, and the nitro has red back lighting ware this one doesnt, also the nitro comes with a i5 and i7 versions with ssd and hd options instead of this model that currently only ships with a 1tb hard drive. the motherboard is exactly the same for both laptops, the screen is the same as well along with the general materials used and design. the nitro is just more or less a gamer rebrand. (edit the nitro also comes with an improved wifi card. just found that out, it ships with the killer 1535)
