The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

The Sunday of my youth will not , be back again . I loved this song back in the day , and now , I fight back a tear .
That’s my father on the far left. Great music.
Wow! That'so cool....
Is he still with us?
Hey!.... keep dream'in....lol

So long ago, but yes!

Back when most businesses were still closed on Sundays. Family day of rest. We should re-think that.
Same for my family

Malcom was superb, Ty !! Is he still with us?

Love the original lineup with Oz, Nigel, the Chief & Malcolm. Elaine had a beautiful set of pipes!
When a voice sounds better live than recorded in a studio, that is what Spanky McFarland had.😃
Absolutely!
I agree. Great voice
Another of those phenomenal songs from 67, the greatest year in music !!!!
No question. The sheer volume of original and beautiful tracks is legendary
I love 1967 , too. We will never see another year like that again.
A severely overlooked band. What an incredible voice Elaine had.
Underrated largely because of the Mamas & the Papas
@@wheresthelie6224 If they would've put Elaine Spanky MacFarlane against Cass Elliot that would've been one hell of a voice contest! But I must say I personally prefer Spanky over Cass.
Wish this was live ....
True enough.
But after Mama Cass died, Spanky was invited to tour with the New Mamas and Papas band, which she did.
She was one of the few singers around who had the availability, and very powerful voice and large range that Mama Cass had. Quite an honour.
Truth
Spanky is beautiful 😊
😂😂
She's got the moves too. And I can't imagine working in a band with a talent like her.
Thick and sexy

That's got to be the coolest drummer in music history. He barely moves.

Great performance! I miss the world I grew up in, not perfect, but much better than now.
I miss my world as well. I'm in Canada and I do not even recognize it anymore.

Hell yeah. We were very lucky to grow up in this era! Today world has changed and not for better🌍
I wish I could go back. Before you know it, you're all grown up.
What garbage we have now! So much magical great music in the 60's. Like this!
I love Elaine’s voice and that Style of singing. Like Judith Durham of the Seekers, Mama Cass, etc. Isn’t it great that we, the Baby Boomers, have RUclips and can bring back those FEELINGS at the click of a button. George Jetson would be proud of us…!!! 😂❤️🎶
Lovely voice, and yes Judith Durham of the Seekers had an angelic voice and what a pretty lady! Love this song. I was only 6 at the time, but remember the 60's!
I love Judith Durham. What an amazing voice she had. We were really blessed to have the best music ever.
Elaine easily had one of the very best voices in all of pop and rock.
And Cass Elliott
I agree. 😊
Such great music. I was in elementary school during the 60's, but the music from that era has had a lasting impact on my life. Peace!
I absolutely agree. In my case, I was born in 1966, this wonderful song was a big inspirational hit in 1968. Because I was a toodler at that time, I can’t appreciate this song. But when I was in kindergarten way back in 1972 I remember hearing this song in my neighborhood and a lot of folks love this song. I liked it too, but I could only do humming because all I could sing is the part that says “Sunday will never be the same”. Even in my school, a lot of the teachers loves this wonderful song.
Music like this is what made the 60's so special.
Same here. I was born in 1960. I had several older siblings who were into music, one was a folk singer, another played guitar and sang in a rock band, dad listened to music and mom played piano. I was already paying attention to the albums they listened to and the songs on the radio by the time I was three. Then The Beatles came along and I quickly became a big music fan. I had no idea back then that I came along at the perfect time for music, and for several years there were always several songs out that I liked at any given time.
i was 10 when this song came out and remember enjoyed listening to it on my transistor radio.
So right Stephen ...a lasting positive impact ! We are lucky.
I believe Sunday song was offered to Mama's And Papa's and they turned it down..great for Spanky and the gang! 👍
The orginal drummer was John Seiter. big hat ( Seiter) class act drummer. Very smooth. The Drummer really leads the song. And he also played with the Turtles. 🙏👋👋👋👍
He later worked for the NY Jets with Turtles bassist Jim Pons.
@user-wt2rs2mm9n With all the Super Fly hats in the Jets locker room at the time, I don't think anyone noticed his hat.

They are such a great group! I love this song and the female lead singer has such a powerful and beautiful voice!!
Were we ever this wide eyed innocent? I can only hope so......

I can no longer walk theses paths for they have changed. Brilliant
Spanky and Mama Cass had the best voices of that era.
Don't forget Karen Carpenter...
Spanky was supposed to be the new Cass Elliot in the New Mamas and Papas. MacKenzie Phillips was going to sing Michelle Phillips's part. The new group never got going.

Me too. I long for those days.
I remember watching this on a Sunday night. Ed Sullivan would preface acts like this with: "And now we have a treat for the youngsters in the audience". I was one of those "youngsters" at the age of 13. I had a crush on Spanky, she sings like an angel.
RIGHT UP THERE WITH CASS ELLIOT...
My Mom absolutely LOVED this group--as a youngster in the very late 60's early 70's I remember her playing their records ALL the time!! They really had some beautiful songs--"Like to Get to Know You" is in a class by itself--still one of the most beautiful songs of that era IMHO!!
I loved this group and that time of my life, thanks for the memories. It beats the hell out of the crazy I've heard on the radio these days. I want the oldies back..
Are you a fan of the mamas and the papas and the seekers as well?
@@Dr.Fate2 I definitely am--and they were both great groups! But my Mom LOVED "Spanky and Our Gang"--she really had a thing for them. That's why they stand out in my memory--and "Like to Get to Know You" is still one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life!!
This is the era when artists had REAL talent. No fancy electronic enhancements..Just REAL singing. Spanky & Our Gang was a highly underrated group. Just noticed the date of this historic performance: June 18, 1967...The last day of the Monterey Pop Festival. Songs like this epitomize the Summer Of Love (1967).

@@HiltonDriver-rf8zd love both groups,Sadly all the members of S&OG have passed except for lead singer Elaine (Spanky).
@@jamesframpton8120 Every place I work, I try to turn-on the younger generations to music like this. I once had one young man comment, completely genuine: "I didn't know music was supposed to be FUN!". Granted, he was barely 20-21 years old so I guess from his experience with the years of music he was exposed to.... he'd never known music to be "fun".
I turned one kid I used to work with onto Philly Soul and 70's Funk. I'd never seen somebody so completely over the moon to discover "new" (to him) music that was actually enjoyable.
The group of youngsters I work with today is quite interesting. They are very aware of how modern music "sucks" and they LOVE the fact that I can introduce them to many genres they were not aware. Some older stuff is not as easy to get it seems.
I was getting ready to go into the army, when this tune came out in June of 1967. By October I was in the army, and "Lazy Day" was then a national hit!

Even mainstream 1960s' pop music was great.
Sunshine pop
What was played on the radio was mainstream soft rock, but if you owned any of their albums you would have discovered they played a wide range of musical styles. It was through them I discovered the genius of Hoagy Carmichael.
@@VoightComp Oh, the heavy hand of the marketing department. This group seems to have been an "iceberg"- there was a lot more beneath than what showed above the surface.
What an absolutely brilliant performance by all band members. Elaine's contralto voice is something special. Her range, inflection and heart come through crystal clear. The arrangements and background vocals are amazing. I cannot thank you enough for posting this.
Awwee the 60's! So much great music! I could never pick just one song or band, but this one is in the top 10! Spanky McFarland had an incredible voice.

When my oldest brother came home from Nam; he had almost all the music after being an air traffic controller in England and this certainly was one of them; truly a masterpiece!
I don’t know what it is but no group takes me to the 60s like spanky and our gang! I like to get to know you is like a time machine 👍
Dreamy. Trippy. Nostalgic. They signify the time. Especially 1967.
I was born in 1955 and grew up in far southwest Texas. We road a school bus 108 miles round trip everyday. I remember my first AM radio and it could only pick up one station and that was at night. KOMA in Oklahoma City. This song was always one of my favorite songs and it still is. Its great how music can bring a person back to specific times in their life. Those were happy times for me.
Listen ... a real performance and NO lip sync! I really miss the old days, when we enjoyed performers who were actually talented.
We had great music back in the day! At present, I still listen to the oldies on the radio.
It’s 9/22/24 in Austin, Tx! Great song and awesome singers! Seniors were great in ‘68! I’m 75 and still rockin to the ‘60s today🎶🥳
The Native Drummer NEVER Misses A Beat
What I love about this performance is that they got a hit record on the basis of their talent rather than the way they look. women singers today are all about the sexy clothes and the looks and they create their voices on a computer with all kinds of effects. Back in the 60s it was about that wonderful voice and looks were secondary or not considered at all. The men in the Spanky band were dressed for a shootout in the OK Corral which was totally fine because they had the talent to get away with it. They all look incredibly old also which is probably just the styles of the time.
I agree, lots and lots of genius musicians will never be discovered in this day because they got hit with the ugly stick.
In 1967 popular music was not a visual medium; performers rarely got TV appearances as their were very few shows featuring musical performers, and most often for a song or two only. Nationwide and int'l tours were reserved for the biggest names only, and venues were small; sound equipment in those days was inadequate to power arenas and stadiums. The Monkees were hand picked for a TV show, so they were selected in part for their looks, and they were pretty average looking guys. Performers had a manager for a team, and that was about it. Interesting to note that the female singer in Spanky & Our Gang was a bit plump, and her outfit featuring wide horizontal stripes was the opposite of flattering; there was no one around to advise on stage appeal in that era. Lastly, TV in the 60's was a G rated; it was no place for young people to find entertainment, it was all family stuff back then. Corny and uncool
Mama Cass...a big woman with a wonderful voice
@@randyelliott9152 Good try.
@@05645ci plenty of music and variety shows on tv in the sixties. I would argue that performing artist had a lot more outlets for singing in front of tv cameras than now currently available. Ed Sullivan was the pinnacle of tv variety shows but he was but one of many.
Spanky had a very distinctive vocal quality.
My dad played with Lefty Baker when they were in Mac Wiseman’s band way back when. Lefty was a banjo picker and my dad played fiddle. Spanky & Our Gang was one of my favorite bands in the 60s, and this was my favorite song. Thanks so much for posting it 🌺
I'm glad that I was just becoming a teenager when this music was on the radio. Because I can listen to it now and remember how new and wondrous the world was to me then.
