  • We hear this term thrown around a lot in our community, and it can have a lot of different meanings for different people's situations.
According to the research that Dr. Rader compiled for her doctoral dissertation (Zaza et. al, 1998), the definition of an overuse injury for a musician is:
"A PRMD (Playing-related Muscuoloskeletal Disorder, aka overuse injury) is defined as pain, weakness, lack of control, numbness, tingling, or other symptoms that interfere with one's ability to play their instrument at the level they are accustomed to."
This can apply to a musician at any level, from a beginner violist, to the principal trumpet player in the New York Philharmonic.
