Alex- this is the first review of yours I've watched, but I have to say it was better than 99% of car reviews I've gone through. It was thorough and delivered all of the necessary content in a respectable amount of time. Good work!
Since I'm going to get my license in June, I have been looking at reviews for this 2014 Chevy Malibu and I have seen a lot of positive reviews which makes this my top car to get!
Just purchased the 2014 Malibu LT on Jan. 7, 2014. What sold me was the price. While I appreciate Honda's and Mazda's refinement and resale value, I just couldn't pass on the Malibu's price. GM was offering a $4,300 discount and then they gave me an additional $2300 to my $1700 GM Capital One credit card earnings balance. They let me apply the entire bonus of $4000, instead of the normal $1500 allowance for the Malibu. So I paid $16,200 for a car with a $24,560 MSRP. While not quite "free" as Ron Burgundy was advertising the Dodge vehicles, I still got a solid car for a righteous price and am very happy with the ride quality.
I drove the new '14 Malibu for a day and also found the engine sound bizarre like you described but eventually got used to it. I liked it's fuel economy and quiet interior but not so much it's dash design. That oval shaped center stack was a little out of date looking, hell the whole interior is out of date but I liked its ride and handling also. At first I fell in love with the new '14 Fusion but I didn't like it's 2.5 engine, (noisy and gutless) but I loved it's handling and exterior & interior design. I was comparing cars in the $22k-$27k range. Thanks for the review...
You summed it up nicely It doesn't do anything appreciably better than the competition, making it overall a very mediocre vehicle. The thing is, I really like the interior and I really want a Chevy mid-sized sedan.
Love your reviews, Alex! Thanks for your hard work. Not digging the multi-bar dash work and I do love the brown interior, mostly because it's not available on other models in this class.
Boring car... owned one for 2 months and then sold it and lost 12k in SR. Mazda sucks shit in resale value, that's for sure. It has a nice exterior and nice safety features. But the screen is bullshit, interior design is bullshit, they slapped a shitty screen with laggy "navigation" and radio in there, AC below it. And that's it. Don't expect anything impressive from that car after a while of owning it, It certainly won't have you come back to it with a grin or expecting something new.
I'll have to admit it though, the leather on that car was super. Especially in some parts of the rear seat. The alloy wheels were very beautiful, the exterior was pretty, but the interior and features are just boring. The car is too dry to own for several years. I would go with an Accord or a Malibu over a mazda 6 anyday. Sure the safety features are nice, but other vehicles of the class do not completely lack them. one thing that really started me on the car was noises coming from the dashboard on high speeds or after riding over a bump, they were not comforting at all, the center console seems to be made of really really low quality materials, I gave it a slap and it all shook. I surmise if you punch it with strength some of it will even break. That car did'n look like it was gonna live for a while. Good thing I sold it
Another good review, Alex. Appreciate both the in-depth coverage of the infotainment system that few reviewers provide and separation from the overall review of the vehicle. As far as the Malibu is concerned, it's a shame you weren't able to review the car with the preferable 2L turbo engine. The rest of the vehicle is so "average" it would be nice to see a review of the power train option that takes it up a notch. I realize you're at the mercy of the manufacturer/dealer who supplies the test car so it's too bad that they don't put their best foot forward with a distinctive configuration. As other comments note, it would be useful to get an evaluation of the stop/start system in the Chevy, especially considering that it's rare in this segment. As someone who frequently sits in line at the local Starbuck's for 15-20 minutes a day, it's a feature I'd like to know more about. (In other words, it ain't all about stop lights; some of us face nightmare commute environments where lots of dino juice gets burned just sitting still.) Bottom line. It looks like GM's efforts were directed toward the Impala re-design with the gray interior of the Malibu standing as a metaphor for the attention it received for 2014. That's too bad. Hopefully, the General will lavish some attention on the Malibu for 2015.
Great review! I enjoyed it very much. I would love to hear a review of the malibu with the turbo but haven't found one yet. I also would like to hear your input about the kia optima as well. Once again, great review.
Man, I spend a lot time looking at some of these reviews and I swear half of the people doing the reviews really don't know what they hell they are talking about. Very Nik Picky about everything
I like your reviews. A suggestion: shots of the car moving. Just put your camera on a tripod and drive by a couple of times - repeat in a different location and you're done.
We rent one of this Malibu a few week ago and it runs and drive very nice but the rear leg rooms is very tight making it fall into the compact sedan category if I must say.
Awesome review. I'd take the Honda Accord anytime. It has great fuel economy, handles good, has lots of windows so visibility is not an issue, and the new 4cyl CVT is the best CVT out there and very strong.
Another great review. I drive a lot of Chevys and Toyotas and in most of the Chevy cars Sonic, Cruze, and Malibu I feel the throttle and brakes are uneven and jumpy/grabby. Would you agree most Chevy pedal progressive response is unpredictable? The Toyotas feel so predictable in comparison.
I didn't really find a problem with the 2014 Malibu, although I have to say I did not drive the 2013 so it is possible they changed things with the new engine.
Accord, Mazda6 and Passat have very excellent short brake distances. Just drove my friend's 09 Corolla just installed with new front brakes on. It was worst than my 05 Ford Five hundred. I used to rent 09 Hyundai Santa Fe, 05 Elanta and 05 Chevy Cobalt which felt much worst than my 06 Mazda6s (v6) or 04 Mazda 6 i (4cy). That is one of reasons, I did not consider 2014 Sonata/Optima, Camry, Altima or Malibu in my 2014 new car list.
I have a 2010 and love the ride and size, but I have never been a fan of Malibu, but these newer ones are sharp. I had one sup buy a Malibu back in 2005 and I hated the way the `05 models look, and then over yrs with my other boss she bought a 2013 Malibu I sat in it and thought a world of difference from the 2005. GM is doing a good job with their Chevys. I would consider the Malibu for my next vehicle if I didn't go for a Luxury car(Buick Lacrosse or Cadillac CTC)
Dust buster with bronchitis... that’s about it! I just bought one and I thought something was wrong with my car it sounds so weird. It shifts a little weird. I have powertrain warranty so I’m not worried but my my 08 Honda Accord was quiter and faster.i may be trading mine in
I don't like Malibu car instrument panel, rear tail lights and without standard remote fuel door. The front looks great to me. I think the quality is better than my Passat.
At 00:50, did he just say that the KIA optima is less exciting to look at than a Mazda 6 or Ford Fusion? I completely disagree, to me the Optima is the best looking one followed by the Mazda 6.
Really?, cause I see a lot of 2011 kia models on the road and they are not falling apart. Besides, Hyundai/KIA make very reliable cars now, this isn't the 90's anymore. The south Koreans are making better and more exciting cars than the japanese
I'm sure many optima owners are enjoying having a car that not only drives great but it also looks very premium, like an audi. Your Honda accord won't be turning any heads like the optima does, thrust me.
The optima isn't really a pretty car. I believe the new Honda Accord is much more attractive and has better quality interior and exterior. Optima Interior feels tacky and cheap. To each his own really. Plus Kia has one of the worst resale values of any car. I can actually get money for my accord after a few years driving. The new Mazda 6 and Ford Fusion look amazing. Fusion looks like an Aston Martin and the Mazda 6 looks very futuristic.
Well he called it as he saw it. That said he didnt have anything to crush it either. A good mid sized sedan in my opinion. Still GM know they have to come better to have something to generate buzz in the market.
No, but it does come with a tire inflation kit. We have a 2014 2LTZ and love it! I highly recommend checking it out before boring yourself to death in a Camry, Accord, or Altima test drive..
Hows the sound system? Can it get really loud with good bass? No one ever comments about the sound system when doing car reviews and that's a huge thing for music buffs like me.
With the Pioneer 9 speaker system, it's really good, even with good bass (coming from 6x9 speakers in the rear deck). I haven't been in one with the stock 6 speakers (does not include 6x9 speakers in the rear deck).
I just got out of a 2014 Malibu ltz rental after a 450 mi jaunt. This thing had the worst seats I've ever sat on. The infernal power lumbar either was designed by Marquis de Sade's descendants or just didn't work right. I will always choose an altima or a bus seat over this thing the next time I'm at the rental counter.
The BMW start stop feature isn't terribly smooth but it has more to do with the engine placement than anything. With a longitudinal engine placement cranking the engine causes the car to move side to side which is more easily noticed by the folks in the car. The Malibu is a FWD transverse vehicle so the motion is front to back which is harder for us to notice and because the wheelbase is always longer than the track of a car the actual up/down motion on the axle is less than in a RWD vehicle's side to side motion. I hope that makes sense. Otherwise they are very comparable.
There are only 2 other cars out there in my opinion that are at the top with the malibu in terms of styling, comfort and quality they would be the new mazda 6 and the ford fusion
Instead of making all models appeal to everyone, why don't they make each model appeal to a specific market... I like the all grey interior, but I hate how the speedometer is STILL not digital.
In a midsized high volume car, it is expensive to have an all digital guage cluster. It would raise the price of the car, not to mention it wouldnt match the car either. However, on a luxury car like a cadillac, or a buick, a digital gauge cluster definetly fits.
It stops completely and the car runs off the glass mat battery in the trunk. If the battery runs low or A/C is needed to cool the cabin the engine will restart.
Personally I found the Altima to be more comfortable and more fuel efficient. The Altima with the 3.5L V6 is a great option, it's economy was actually better than the Malibu, there is more interior room and I personally prefer the Altima interior.

The Malibu's exterior obviously cannot compare to the sharpness of an ATS, but it looks better than most in its class (you can't argue with that). The 2.5i has best in class 196HP while the 2.0t has best in class 295LB-FT. Here's what I think should happen: 2.5tdi I4 with 190HP/305LB-FT. 1.6t I4 (VVT, SIDI, and IVVL) with 225HP/240LB-FT. 1.6t eAssist I4 (VVT, SIDI, and IVVL) with 230HP/245LB-FT. 1.8t I4 (VVT, SIDI, and IVVL) with 250HP/290LB-FT. 7-Speed Dual Clutch with +/- Manumatic Shifter. Stop/Start. Active Grille Shutters. 110.5in. E2XX Platform with Hollowed Out Non-Structural Components. 2.5l- 27 City and 51 Highway 1.6t- 29 City and 42 Highway 1.6e- 36 City and 49 Highway 1.8t- 25 City and 37 Highway
Its class-leading power is canceled out by its high curb weight and poorly geared/programmed transmission. And since it's been proven somewhere that a constantly straining 4-banger can't deliver on its promise of superior fuel economy, they should re-introduce a slightly detuned 3.6L V6 with a laughably tall 6th gear for fuel economy and highway driving. Please tighten the suspension up, employ a separate manumatic gate in conjunction with shift paddles and shave its curb weight. Something other than a half-assed facelift for this car.
Malibu s back great but front sucks!..and it would be much more handsome with front-back full LED ligths... Fusion s front great back sucks Mazda 6 front and back both great but no led lights plus i dont like the german interior style of it. And the other all japanese cars are head fuckers(in this segment),i hate the cabin noise of asian cars......
why wont chevy get with the program and get rid of those ugly ass gauges...everyone has nicer gauge clusters..even my optima's plain white gauge is better looking than those ugly greenish colored numbers
What?!!...It shuts the engine off at a stoplight?!Man,I cant see how in hell That would ever fly.I dont want anyone shutting my engine off,but Me....Next!
I just got this car.did’ know it had that feature. I’ve heard there has been many issues with it not starting back up! I’m a little afraid to drive it. There is no way to deactivate it
Alex- this is the first review of yours I've watched, but I have to say it was better than 99% of car reviews I've gone through. It was thorough and delivered all of the necessary content in a respectable amount of time. Good work!
Since I'm going to get my license in June, I have been looking at reviews for this 2014 Chevy Malibu and I have seen a lot of positive reviews which makes this my top car to get!
Your reviews really are the best, packed with the most info on not just the cars reviewed but also on the car's competition.
Looking back at this, I love my 2016 and 2014. It’s quicker than I thought it would be
7.38 seconds, that's pretty fast for a four cylinder mid sized sedan
Just purchased the 2014 Malibu LT on Jan. 7, 2014. What sold me was the price. While I appreciate Honda's and Mazda's refinement and resale value, I just couldn't pass on the Malibu's price. I am glad I found your channel on RUclips...Best car reviews in my consideration...
Getting into the trunk was a little weird but still the best review I have gone though, Congrats!
Just bought a 2014 Malibu and love it
At night it looks cool with the interior lumination
Love your reviews, Alex! Thanks for your hard work. Not digging the multi-bar dash work and I do love the brown interior, mostly because it's not available on other models in this class.
If I wanted a Mazda six review I would've search for a Mazda six review.
hahahha
Lol! It does seem like he really likes that mazda huh?
Boring car... owned one for 2 months and then sold it and lost 12k in SR. Mazda sucks shit in resale value, that's for sure.

196 HP Looks very good. I think this is better value than 2015 Hyundai Sonata.
Another good review, Alex. Appreciate both the in-depth coverage of the infotainment system that few reviewers provide and separation from the overall review of the vehicle.

It works well and I love the concept of start/stop. As long as you're not in a Phoenix Summer, there is no reason to run the engine at a stop.
Great review! I enjoyed it very much. I would love to hear a review of the malibu with the turbo but haven't found one yet. I also would like to hear your input about the kia optima as well. Once again, great review.
7.3 seconds to 60 mph is quick for a NA 4cyl.
Fails to impress ? Man 7.3secs that is amazingly fast the car should get a lot more attention for that alone there is some v8 cars not even doing that
Man, I spend a lot time looking at some of these reviews and I swear half of the people doing the reviews really don't know what they hell they are talking about. Very Nik Picky about everything
I like your reviews.
A suggestion: shots of the car moving. Just put your camera on a tripod and drive by a couple of times - repeat in a different location and you're done.
Thanks for the input. We'll see what we can do about that.
LOL good trunk space demonstration it is gangster approved
Our 2014 is the best!
We rent one of this Malibu a few week ago and it runs and drive very nice but the rear leg rooms is very tight making it fall into the compact sedan category if I must say.

I'd take the Honda Accord anytime.

I like the review. Do some more

Honesty, I find the brakes in a camry to be unpredictable, and over boosted. The nissan altima is another story, that thing is just fucking scary.
Accord, Mazda6 and Passat have very excellent short brake distances. Just drove my friend's 09 Corolla just installed with new front brakes on. It was worst than my 05 Ford Five hundred. That is one of reasons, I did not consider 2014 Sonata/Optima, Camry, Altima or Malibu in my 2014 new car list.
You just mentioned a bunch of things that have nothing to do with my comment.... so why do I care?
I have a 2010 and love the ride and size, but I have never been a fan of Malibu, but these newer ones are sharp. I like the way the screen opens - nice touch(screen :P)!
I love your reviews but want driving shots of the car actually driving
Dust buster with bronchitis... that’s about it! I just bought one and I thought something was wrong with my car it sounds so weird. It shifts a little weird. I have powertrain warranty so I’m not worried but my my 08 Honda Accord was quiter and faster.i may be trading mine in

Hey Alex--have you had any luck landing a Forester to review?
Not yet, but we will know whether we can borrow one after the start of the new year. December is going to be a light month I think.
At 00:50, did he just say that the KIA optima is less exciting to look at than a Mazda 6 or Ford Fusion? I completely disagree, to me the Optima is the best looking one followed by the Mazda 6.
Kia optima is a joke. Thing will fall apart in three years.
Really?, cause I see a lot of 2011 kia models on the road and they are not falling apart. Besides, Hyundai/KIA make very reliable cars now, this isn't the 90's anymore. The south Koreans are making better and more exciting cars than the japanese
Enjoy it then. I'll stick with mt Honda accord and which has been consumer reports best rated sedan for years.
I'm sure many optima owners are enjoying having a car that not only drives great but it also looks very premium, like an audi. Your Honda accord won't be turning any heads like the optima does, thrust me.

"Out back we have an attractive butt" LOL
Would a bedroom door fit in the trunk with the seat down?
Any chance you'll get around to reviewing the 2016 Malibu?
Windgrace haha exactly! We are still waiting!
Why we have only left side object detection sensor but not in right. Why!?
Well he called it as he saw it. That said he didnt have anything to crush it either. A good mid sized sedan in my opinion. Still GM know they have to come better to have something to generate buzz in the market.
Seriously thinking about buying this car. Please tell me it comes with a spare tire, or at least the well for one.
No, but it does come with a tire inflation kit. We have a 2014 2LTZ and love it! I highly recommend checking it out before boring yourself to death in a Camry, Accord, or Altima test drive..
The Ford Fusion looks like a cheap replicar.
I know right?
2 me the Malibu looks like cheap shit
Hows the sound system? Can it get really loud with good bass? No one ever comments about the sound system when doing car reviews and that's a huge thing for music buffs like me.
With the Pioneer 9 speaker system, it's really good, even with good bass (coming from 6x9 speakers in the rear deck). I haven't been in one with the stock 6 speakers (does not include 6x9 speakers in the rear deck).
can you use android auto on it?
I just got out of a 2014 Malibu ltz rental after a 450 mi jaunt. This thing had the worst seats I've ever sat on. The infernal power lumbar either was designed by Marquis de Sade's descendants or just didn't work right. I will always choose an altima or a bus seat over this thing the next time I'm at the rental counter.
jet black interior ftw
What about the spare tire
Well I really like my 2014 Chevy Malibu very up to date car
Is it loud ? If that makes sense
No it's not loud sweetheart
how is that auto start/stop feature. can you feel it . i have heard bmw has the worst start/stop ..so what are your thoughts compare to others..
Instead of making all models appeal to everyone, why don't they make each model appeal to a specific market...
I like the all grey interior, but I hate how the speedometer is STILL not digital.
Over9000Gingers I guess it takes one to know one!
yes
In a midsized high volume car, it is expensive to have an all digital guage cluster. It would raise the price of the car, not to mention it wouldnt match the car either. However, on a luxury car like a cadillac, or a buick, a digital gauge cluster definetly fits.
So at complete stop, engine hibernates or shuts down completely ?
It stops completely and the car runs off the glass mat battery in the trunk. If the battery runs low or A/C is needed to cool the cabin the engine will restart.
Looks like dust would hard to clean from the ribbed section on the dash!
Feather duster ;-)
+ alex on autos: ALTIMA OR MALIBU? And why. Thank you
Personally I found the Altima to be more comfortable and more fuel efficient. The Altima with the 3.5L V6 is a great option, it's economy was actually better than the Malibu, there is more interior room and I personally prefer the Altima interior.
Asking again for optima review.
good review. more like this
Did U get new glasses
Woah buddy u need to clean the cars before reviewing them. That looks awful in certain clips
The man doing the video he is talking about ford fusion
Who closes themselves in a trunk? LOL
From the outset the 2013 Malibu has been a consistent disappointment. I can't WAIT until it gets a clean-sheet redesign that might include better engine choices than it currently offers and a far better manumatic setup than that poorly mounted and cheap-feeling +/- rocker switch
The Malibu's exterior obviously cannot compare to the sharpness of an ATS, but it looks better than most in its class (you can't argue with that). The 2.5i has best in class 196HP while the 2.0t has best in class 295LB-FT. Here's what I think should happen:
2.5tdi I4 with 190HP/305LB-FT.
2.5l- 27 City and 51 Highway
1.6t- 29 City and 42 Highway
1.6e- 36 City and 49 Highway
1.8t- 25 City and 37 Highway
Its class-leading power is canceled out by its high curb weight and poorly geared/programmed transmission. And since it's been proven somewhere that a constantly straining 4-banger can't deliver on its promise of superior fuel economy, they should re-introduce a slightly detuned 3.6L V6 with a laughably tall 6th gear for fuel economy and highway driving. Please tighten the suspension up, employ a separate manumatic gate in conjunction with shift paddles and shave its curb weight. Something other than a half-assed facelift for this car.
Malibu2013 butter than 2014 because brake electronic the best
Not if your car battery dies.... I wouldnt mind having it, I just have no idea what happens when you battery dies and it the parking brake is engaged
I still prefer Camry or accord
So do i
and the ford fusion 2017 is a little better then a malibu even the new malibu looks kinda dull in inside
he likes the word segment...... this years malibu looks like shit to me, not that i paid any attention to last years
To much talking. Blah blah
Wow Chevrolet, still with all the styling of filling cabinet with a nasty gold bow tie. Yawn
I dont like the new body style. Ill take the 7th generation 2008-2012 ty very much
Malibu s back great but front sucks!..and it would be much more handsome with front-back full LED ligths...
Fusion s front great back sucks
Mazda 6 front and back both great but no led lights plus i dont like the german interior style of it.
