I would imagine at least 90% of the UK population still think China is still worse, in terms of living standards, infrastructure, health care, education, etc. than them. The government, schools and mainstream media have been talking China down for decades resulting in not only ignorance towards China but also a hostile attitude.
Because they are really hostile even towards PH their first ever bestfriend. Even the oldest China town is in PH. Then they hurt our fisherman even our military men. Obviously the island and the sea is part of PH given the nearby island is even Filipinos. They are super far from Spratlys. Continuously bullying PH.
Chinese people have worked very hard to get their country where it is now, but it all happened very "fast" in maybe a couple of decades, so many people haven't updated their information about China in their heads, so they still have an image akin of "North Korea" with people dressing all the same... People need time to update
Sounds like you have not been to China, particularly Beijing, for quite a long time. Beijing has now, most of the time, a beautiful, clean/clear blue sky. The fact is that China has been moving steadily forward, and the UK has just been doing the opposite.
2015 he said , so nearly 10yr ago - i bet you the high speed railway line/ highways probably has doubled ! But what he has to say about the current UK situation is spot on 👍
From what he said, i can imagine that he tell that china is a big city while uk is a village. For a big city dirtier than village is common to the entire world
If only those Blue skies were actually most of the time. We've had a bad year thus far in Beijing. Still, not as bad as years ago I'm told. In my 7 years in Beijing, 2024 pollution has been just as noticeable as when I first moved here.
On western pollution statistics websites you can actually see that most days of the year, Beijing has now less pollution than some of the major US and other Western big cities. China is changing very rapidly since 1949. Every decade brings changes that other country take half a century
I have travelled to the UK quite often for the past several years. London, while very interesting with wonderful bookshops and museums is expensive and very poor value for money. Post Covid, I once waited 2 hours to clear security at Heathrow. The trains were not in the best state of repair and were often inexplicably delayed. There were homeless people camped out at the main entrance to King’s Cross station. Edinburgh was only marginally less expensive than London. Newcastle and the Scottish highlands were pleasant. In contrast, China is much more affordable and their trains are superb. Their airports are new and efficient. As for the much vaunted British orderliness, I can assure you that there was nothing orderly in the mad scrum in the tube station when a huge crowd of football supporters rushed into the underground station.
Uk needs to stop funding wars, and not waste money on the navy mess around the south China sea, save the money for other uses for UK citizens is better.
The UK still has that false sense of empire, thinking that they own the Pacific. They did, with guns and opium, in the last two centuries. They don't realize that the dark ages is gone, their warships are not welcome in Asian waters anymore.
your judgement is a bit dated, china has changed so much since you left, the sky in beijing is much much cleaner than what it was even 5 years ago due to large adoption of EV.
The first half of the video with all the negativities about China is really a "generation issue." China only took four decades to transform and modernize it's country going from poverty to the second biggest economy in the world with world class infrastructure. The average lifespan of a human is 70 years, one generation. China's rapid development merely outpaced the rules of etiquette but it's society will be more in sync with the western world through future generations no longer raised under poverty as the past.
Yeah. China became rich so fast that the people didn't have time to evolve, too. China did not get to have an industrial revolution like some countries in the west, they were occupied by foreign forces. That's why China was so poor for so long. But China has caught up and now will surpass other industrial nations.
It is not a generation issue, it is that fact he looks at the world with what Chinese would say “以偏带面”。 I have been in a second tier city in China and observed the fact the most of the time people getting on or off orderly in subway. Extreme case is everywhere!
Why are you making a video in 2024 about China when you left in 2015? Things are a bit dated after 9 years. China changes like lightning speed. Just hop into its HSR and look at the clean air now.
9 years of china until 2015? you start with the green without pollution from England, and today 2024 China is extremely much cleaner due to the brutal change between electric transport, 100% of its motorcycles are electric, 100% of its buses are electric, and electric cars are already in sales exceed those of combustion by more than 50%, many of the foreigners who are in China today always comment on how quiet and clean air their large cities are and it is due to the adoption of electric cars and other electric vehicles by people who have recently updated, it is not going to It will be no surprise that very soon we will see 50% of all electric cars in China and then 100% later. The truth is that China is already the safest country in the world, but in your England you know how things are, you drop something and they steal it before it hits the ground, what's more, they don't even wait and they steal it when you carry it on you xd You cant do a video comparing if you were not in China 10 years ago, let's look at the changes in China in the last 40 years It was ultra impressive, and the changes are accelerating, so subtract the last 10 years of China and surely things changed a lot and at a greater speed than the previous decades.
The British Prime Minister changed 5 times in 14 years, and the shortest course of treatment was only 2 months. Shocking!. Britain is politically biased towards the US and can be said to be a slave of the U.S. government. Only after Brexit, the economy is severely short-changed. It is a problem that is difficult to solve now that we have a new relationship. It rains all year round and the cost of living in the UK is high, which will affect investors. Southeast Asian countries are now a popular choice for foreign companies to invest, and they will not choose to invest in the UK.I have read the BBC's reports on China, and almost all of them are negative. They describe China as: “backward smoggy cities, where everyone still rides bicycles and wear grey old clothes because they are all poor and starving! The streets are full of police and soldiers, and people live in fear."Oh........All of my western friends who made visits to China came back with extremely high praises on China. All cities are modern.clean and very safety. The quality of Chinese people will improve over time. This the true.True you can not see it in Western media when they speak about china.
Unfortunately, UK or rather its US shilling politicians just won't leave China alone. Recently parliamentary debate focused on bad China. Keir Starmer even talked of sending warships to SC Sea to check China. The cheek of him.
A very fair assessment of both countries. Didn't mention petty crime though and not being able to walk alone at night without fear, and teenage yobs making life miserable for everyone.
crime is a common feature in all western cities, so common which is why it was never mentioned, just like in the US, gun crimes, knife crimes, sch00l sh00tings are all common, theft, ponzi schemes, insider tradings are all common features, it's now part of the culture.
Having lived in Asia for nearly 20 years, I now have a preference for it over the UK. While every place in the world has its pros and cons, I find myself favoring Asia.
Fast forward 9 years when you were in Beijing, vast improvements have been made. From queing up, mannerism, to air quality all are significantly better. Clear blue sky over Beijing is now common.
I was blown away going to the hospital in China and had about 3 other people barging into the drs office with me but happy to deal with that for the cleanliness and the infrastructure.
Good to hear the differences first hand... China is an awesome country but there are a few areas they could still improve : 1. Spitting Culture - I saw a guy spit inside a train station on the tile flooring and nobody bat an eyelid. 2. Queueing - While the queueing culture has improved in the last 25yrs, it's still lacking. For example, people do not wait for passengers to come out of the train before going in. 3. Traffic - The traffic while orderly does not respect pedestrian crossing and will sometimes just try to run you down 4. Bicycles and Parking - Bicycles and cars are parked all over the pedestrian walks etc... sometimes neatly but often in a disorderly manner. I personally think the pedestrian walks are not for car parking. However, I believe the above will improve over the next 10 years or so.
Is the queuing/politeness situation just as bad in the nicer areas of more cosmopolitan cities like Shanghai? Or would it actually be worse there? If someone was going to teach in that part of the world, where would you recommend? I'm thinking about China, HK, Taiwan and Singapore, mostly.
You've been hanging out with the wrong people in China because I know a number of them who are very informed about China and global current affairs. There are over 1.4 billion people in China. Of course, things will be chaotic there. Do a comparison between China and India. Both countries have similar size populations. As for the pollution, sometimes the AQI of London is higher than the AQI of Beijing. As for greenery, China is very green as well. There are actually endless mountains in China. No kidding. Honestly, I don't think that the Brits can ever see Chinese people as equals. Westerners normally see themselves at the top of the pyramid and non-whites under them. That's how the world is and that's why BRICS wants to change the world so that everyone is more equal.
Commenting from the UK in 2024 about China prior to 2015 . . . ??? The diesel buses have left, and the electric ones are on the roads now, yet you're still complaining about the diesel buses 😮
Except for historians, few people are interested in your experiences in China 9 years ago when China repositions a city busy overpass in 9 hours! Please revisit China and see if you still recognize the places that you used to frequent during your time almost a decade ago.
I visited China in 1989 and in some places it even seemed mediaeval. The difference with Western living standards was extraordinary, plus there was ah air of menace post Tiananmen Square. I felt very privileged to be from an advanced and free Western society. It's remarkable how things have flipped in a relatively short period.
Brits living in Malaysia for 16 years. Totally agree with everything you say. Both good and bad about the UK and Asia. No member of my family wants to return to the UK.
Britain is a bit cold to have a 24 hour lifestyle. I noticed when I was staying in Turkey for 8 months we didn't go for a meal to at least after 9 o'clock more like 11:00 o'clock it would be lovely and warm turkish families would all be in the restaurant as well as well as a few of us tourists as well, children running round, good atmosphere, there's no way you could do that in British restaurant even in the summer, it's just too cold. When I went to Uganda it was even more extreme I was being driven home one night and we were stuck in traffic for a little bit and I noticed out my window it was full of people in the dark sitting on chairs and Settees and sofas eating food and communing, it looked fantastic, but again there's no way you could do that in the UK because it's way too cold and way too wet. My host went out one night and I asked her where she was going in the middle of night, she said she was going to church for an all night church session starting at 12 midnight and lasting until 6:00 o'clock in the morning this will be so unheard of in Britain that it'd be incredible, sounds more like a nightclub timetable.
Yeah, a lot of Brexit was about "the UK punching above its weight", whereas in Brussels, we never felt any blows. The whole Brexit process was seen in terms of British intransigence, being deliberately obstructive and contemptuous of due process, but to no effect. "Pompous" is a good word here.
I think you are describing the Europeans. Britain became the EU's punch bag. The only thing that unified Europe was picking on Britain and blaming Britain for the problems of Europe. The EU was a joke.
@@stevensibbet5869 I am a "European" and can assure you that Brexit scarcely even made it into the news. It was something the British were doing for some inexplicable reason and which interested very few people. The issue occasionally made it into the feuilletons, where the general tone was regret.
@@1258-Eckhart I have no regrets, it's been wonderful since we left. It didn't matter what Britain said you always did what Germany wanted you to do, it's the level of conformity that you don't find in countries like Britain and Hungary, something to do with being an individualist country as opposed to a collectivist country.
@@stevensibbet5869 Ok but fact: you will rejoin. I know that you already to a degree of 70% have. Not necessary to make formal provisions - probably we all know that, wink wink.
@@1258-Eckhart why the hell would we rejoin? The EU is falling to bits, EU immigration policy is extremely unpopular amongst the electorate, it will be the death of the current EU.
2004 - 2015 in Beijing, unfortunately you have experienced the worst time in terms of air quality. Now it is getting much much better, welcome back to Beijing to have a look.
Why even bother to talk about China decades ago? The past is long gone and China had grown and improved in every way at tremendous speed in the last decades that put the US and UK in shame! The huge homelessness population and long queues forming at food banks in both countries are the best illustrations of their poor economic situation which can only get worse!
Sugarcoating China is the new trend. Tofu bridges, Hong Kongs coffin apartments, sewage oil, garbage pulled up in inner towns in China? Hidden from outside eyes?
Thank you for the fair comment based on your 9 yrs living in Beijing, China until 2015. It's been nearly 10 yrs since you were in Beijing. I must, however, supplement that during these years, China has been improving those negative aspects you've mentioned while the UK has only been deteriorating in her living conditions. BTW, when I was little, London was well known as "The Capital of Fog".
Your comments about humor in the UK and China are based on linguistic misunderstanding. With your elementary level of Chinese language, I wonder if people will have lively conversations with you in Chinese, knowing that you know little of their customs and culture. Remember that humor is based on a deep understanding of a lot of things in common, unfortunately, I don't see you have anything in common with the local people, so I cannot see how you can understand their humor at all.
Sorry that you think Chinese are not intellectual stimulating. In China, only buddies talk intellectual. They will talk politically correct with strangers. Try to make some close friends not filter by CCP, then you may learn the truth.
Fairly accurate in a broad sense comparing the 2 countries. I have lived in England for quite a few years- it's very very true that Britons are meticulous in the practice and art of queuing up- much better than Chinese style 'queuing'. But then again queuing is also not particularly civilised in many other European nations, so it's a bit unfair to pick on the Chinese on this issue. On the matter of humour generally, yes, there's a lot to like about the sometimes dark humour and self-deprecating style of conversation in Britain- but on this score it's hard to compare- China is such a totally different culture. If you hadn't grown up in either cultures, you are not likely to 'enjoy' the cultural elements of the typical conversational exchange. China has just come out of a very difficult 100 plus years of poverty- it will probably need a few decades more before people learn to relax, and not be too obsessed with material progress... .
UK is a great country minus the Boris, the Nigel, Liz Truss, Sunak, Starmer, Ian Duncan Smith, GBN, LBC, the child hunger, knife crimes, cost of living crisis, home invasions, street muggings, race riots, the king cross station terrorist bombing, HS2,one burned down police station and all the Russian oligarchs and other tax evaders living in THE "city". As a Chinese person, I had been to UK for 7 years. One street mugging and two home invasions(burglary) later and I decided to go home to China after my study is finished. In China, I have left my car on the side of a busy street for many times with(forgot) the keys on the armrest and nothing ever happened. That is how safe it is in China today. Words can not describe the importance of public safety for people whom had experiences with confronting a home burglar with a knife. (i.e. me)
China is boring too. I lived there for approx 4 years. It's obvious if you live in BJ or SH you will have pubs and restaurants open late. But try some small town in Fujian and see how vibrant that is.
Very fair analysis, I lived and worked in Wuhan for 16 years + and know what you mean. True about the outstanding infrastructure and taxi driver tropes! A bit Beijing biased as there’s plenty of stunning areas of unspoilt outstanding natutal beauty throughout China and plenty of blue sky days. Look forward to more videos from your perspective.
Fair assessment! Thank you. I have been in England for over 45 years now. It feels a lot difference. While there are a lot of very friendly people in London, we don’t feel safe anymore. I have not really gone out at night. I have been to Chinese cities recently. Very buoyant and feel safe. One think I don’t like about China is people smoke a lot! You can smell the cigarettes smoke when you get off the trains.
This unpleasant habit unfortunately came from the West. In the 19th century, the British brought opium into the country and forced them onto the Chinese people. Then after WWII, the American influence through their cigarette promotions went wild over the whole world, and lured people into the habit; unfortunately, China was one of those countries.
They had 2 revolutions in fact, during which ruling elite classes were removed and working classes came to rule, of course there would be some loss of more intellectual and upper class culture. The whole tumultuous period of 150 years of invasion, revolution, civil war etc is enough to set one's civilisation many years back. How would the population be focused about topics such as arts, culture, social etiquette when one has to live a hand-to-mouth existence? Yet now their society in periods of peace and prosperity will ultimately rebuild and recover, which in fact is already in progress. Don't fault people for it. Slapstick humour easily understoood helps relieves stress, appeals to the masses which has its place in society too. China too has vast nature and places uninhabited. They however didn't deliberately go around the continents conquering other far away civilizations and wiping out natives. So naturally their country is more densely populated than yours.
I think this guy has to check the latitudes of Britain compared to China. Most of Britain is in the 50s latitude and it's bloody freezing and bloody wet, china is blessed with a long coastline on the Pacific Ocean on the sub tropics, reaching down into the tropics. of course things are going to be nicer there and people can hang out at night time etcetera. Britain is a small tiny country made out of mud and freezing cold weather. china is an empire. Britain has only been inhabited for at the most 15,000 years china has been inhabited for 70,000 years.
China is quickly becoming an Empire with global reach …. If it hasn’t already accomplished that as we speak. Everything about their infrastructure is mind blowingly brilliant. The physical environment is very new. They are driven by competition and stalwartness which is a vaunted Asian trait. I get the impression that the tropes and the reserved nature of public exchanges are directed towards foreigners. In a repressive regime , honest and spontaneous discussions are limited to the four walls of your home. Despite the UK’s problems , life it’s large urban centres has a “je ne sais quoi” that China can’t replicate no matter how hard it tries. Different strokes for different folks. 😉 🇨🇦
People just see what they want to see. I went for a meal yesterday , i didn't crash into a pothole, the service was good, the people were clean , the the toilets were clean and people were happy enjoying themselves and i didn't crash into any potholes on the way home, must have got lucky 😂
It's now more than 20 years since I went to China on a work trip. What a stunning place! Very interesting point of view especially as you have a foreign affairs background. A lot of what you say rings true but I must say that I didn't come across any impoliteness on my admittedly brief visit to Beijing and Harbin. Also I do find most British people also do discuss politics in terms of tropes that they've been indoctrinated with. I think that's partly responsible for that lack of awareness of Britain's position in the world that you describe late on in the video. It is so disappointing to hear you describe that as a problem at senior civil service/government level though.
Hi Fred It’s very interesting listening to your views on the difference between the UK and China. The UK has suffered from massive under investment for years. People and politicians put lower taxes before investing into infrastructure. When we do invest in such projects such as the HS2, it comes in massively over budget, then gets cancelled. It would be interesting to hear your views on mainland Chinese society compared to Taiwan and Japan. For my limited experience watching videos on you tube, Taiwan’s social structure and economy appears to be more like the Japanese model then the mainland Chinese model. Looking forward to your next video.
Taiwans economy and standard of living doesn’t compare with Chinas. Chinese people are now the most travelled cohort in the world now with 70% of the people having a passport. Britain earned billions from North Sea oil. Where has it gone? The Nordic countries used their oil income to make things better for their people and they have the highest standards of living in the world but the British ruling class don’t give a damn about their people and I include the Labour party in that. I left England many years ago
not just China but the Asian pacific is evolving at break neck speed.. they reckon one year in the pacific rim is equal to half a decade in the arrogant collective west.. not only that.. but each country in that region is gradually reclaiming their own unique culture.. what is emerging is is truly exciting.. whilst in the west they are losing what makes them unique.. spur on by the most sophisticated propaganda machine known to man mainly owned by Rupert Murdock..
I liked to watch the Benny Hill show back in the 70s when I was a student in the UK. A few years ago, I watched a few episodes in RUclips and I was surprised how disgusted I found them to be. Absolutely vulgar, there was no humor, all there were cheap jokes abusing women and other nationalities. And they call this Benny Hill Show the crown of British comedy.
Your perspective on pollution is rather outdated. Beijing's air quality has improved dramatically since the early 2010s. The thing is that China is constantly changing and evolving and improving. It is often said that if you visit China every 10 years, you will see a different country each time. This is known as "China speed." That said, your overall assessment of China and UK is fair. China is not a perfect country. But despite its shortcomings, China is still a much better country to live in than the major Western economies (USA, Canada, UK, France, Germany, Italy). I'm Canadian and I've been to China many, many times, so I can present an honest, balanced view, too.
From your profile picture it shows how Canadian you are. Regarding your comment that China has higher standard of life than western countries I will say your pride on China is limitless. I have seen documentaries on China's coffin apartments in Hong Kong, sewage oil, tofu dredge construction. Stop sugarcoating China. Rural China has poverty which only those who go there sees. People use buckets to bring water from outside because they don't have running water in their homes.
@@DariusMazdehan-wl9du The "documentaries" you've been watching are anti-China propaganda garbage. You are very gullible and easy to manipulate. As a bigot, you are willing to believe anything negative that is "reported" on China. Have you actually been to China and seen the country with your own eyes? I don't believe you have.
Have you actually been to China and seen the country with your own eyes? I don't believe you have. Per capita GDP does not accurately reflect quality of life. Many other factors come into play.
Interesting perspective. My experience is a bit different in some aspects. For instance I've noticed that there is actually a big variety of different opinions and thoughts and people tend to be quite well informed. It's just not a reason in China to split society into many isolated groups that each other because of different opinions. Also, what's so bad about acknowledging that Mao did incredible stuff for the country but also made some bad decisions here and there?
@DariusMazdehan-wl9du 1) Tofu bridges: consider this: there is no country on earth that has more bridges than China, with the vast majority of record breaking modern state of the art bridges being in China. There is no country who comes even close to that. That a few older bridges collapsed is bad of course but the same happens in other countries (e.g. Germany just recently, or the US) who have far fewer bridges. 2) Hong Kong was under British rule when they turned it into a crap hole. That's why you don't see the same coffin apartments on the mainland. 3. Never saw or knew anyone in China who experienced sewage oil being used. So it must be an incredibly rare phenomenon. Especially now that the CPC increased hygiene standards quite a bit. 4) don't even know what you mean. Never saw that. Not denying it though as I'm not sure what you're talking about. But my guess is it's something either very rare or out of context info. Anyway, China is very clean. Definitely cleaner than big cities in the USA.
Shalom, China and India should work together forgetting their border issues as two oldest civilizations. India needs to fix up its northern part like Delhi and Varanasi which in my honest opinion China can help because I have travelled througout India and I found a huge disparity between the Northern part ( Delhi , Varanasi) and rest of the country ( South, Northeast, Northwestern Himalayas) in terms of cleanliness, infrastructure, economy.. Also if China like India takes Pro Israeli stance it would be great. Greetings.
@@יונהאליראשון millions of Chinese have been killed by fascist Japanese genociders not that long ago. Why should China support Israel who's doing the same to Palestinians?
First video good try after 9 years of hiatus from China. Despite all the external and internal challenges, like trade frictions, US political pressure, media smearing, property market slump, shifting job markets, there are still a lot of positivity. Because the government has set a lot policies to invest in the future, and actually getting public and private sectors mobilized. Some policies may fail or backfire, but you'll still gain something out of those, while other projects starting to gain fruits. It is much better than what UK has done in past decades, talked a lot and done little for the future. I can see the city gentrifications are good, but no investment in tech, in people, in global relationship, in policies that will help the country and its people grow new pastures. Brexit is a negative policy to break the norm, but lack the positive vision and policies on what are the new visions.
Between 2004 and 2015? 2015? That was almost a decade ago! And you are releasing this video on Nov 2, 2024 ? Almost the end of the year. That would make it literally a decade old NEWS!
Hi there, just seen your video about coming back to UK after 20 odd years. We lived in Australia for 8 years, and it was just really difficult. The country is great but the people are horrible. But having come back to UK, i couldn't agree more with your comments about the good and bad things about the uk. Such a shame that all of the bad things that you mention, are completely solvable, yet unless you go and live abroad, the majority of people here just cannot see it, particularly with the ridiculous Messiahacal worship of the NHS, which in my opinion is just not fit for purpose and is third world in comparison with the most of the rest of the developed world.
Its not just UK. Most of coutres in the west are dull and boring. But they are more organised and more clean whereas in the East are more vibrant and a little choas.
Chaos! depends what and where to find it. Look at their hospitals, prisons, railways, potholes, crimes I can go on etc etc.Even their Parliament is chaotic!
I wouldn't say countries in the west are more organized or cleaner. China is definitely far more cleaner than any country in the west. In terms of organized, China is a country with 1.4 billion people with many of it's mega cities having populations between 15 million to 33 million (Chongqing). Try managing cities with huge populations in the west and see how it fare. Have you been to time square in Manhattan? NYC has only 8 million people and places there like time square is chaotic. Have you seen traffic on the freeways in LA? if you only knew about the traffic there just a few decades ago, a city with population of only 4 million.
""But they are more organised and more clean whereas in the East are more vibrant and a little choas."" You're confusing poorer countries in southeast Asia to China. The only thing China has in common with those countries are vibrancy. China is very orderly when you look at how they managing it's huge population.
Quite a fair video. I sincerely wished you had a better time in China, but unfortunately sometimes we are limited by our times. I agree, the British dark humor and sarcasm are lacking in most parts of China. Beijingers are usually quite funny, but there is also the cultural and language barrier. As for lacking of "inspiring conversations", sad to say it is because you are a foreigner. Chinese people are the same as people everywhere, when they talk in private, they sh*t on the government, their jobs/boss, and their family struggles. There is definitely nothing "propaganda". However, China being a non-immigrant country, its people just don't know how to share a normal conversation with the foreigners. They are friendly and curious, but they don't know how to treat you as equal, for better or worse. Chinese people often say "圈子", which is the friend group you surround yourself with. One quote says "you're the average of the five people spend the most time with", so no matter where you are, try to surround yourself with the most kind and open-minded people, hopefully locals 🙂I am a Chinese that lived in the US for decades now. I come to accept the reality that most caucasians, blacks, and hispanics just don't know how to interact with asians... It is not discrimination; it is a honest lack of understanding and comfort mixed with some stereotypes. When my wife and I go to restaurants, travel tours, and events, we will find our "foreign" waiters, guides, hosts spending way less time chitchatting with us than others. They are very nice to us, but I can only conclude that they don't know what to say to us😅. It is actually quite simple. They can just say the same thing they say to other tables or groups, but I guess they are "comfortable" or "unsure". It is understandable... Anyways, cheerio and best of luck!👋
i was confused initially when you talk about things, i went from the video start again and realised you left 2015, guess you need to visit again if you want to present a fair view about the country. that will be fair to yourself and audience as your current view is dated, things have changed a lot.
I lived in Hong Kong for 4 years, just came back London. I agree with all you said. The intellect and humour of UK, but UK's infrastructure is run down with so much trash on streets😢
Hong Kong is a pig's stye with horrible coffin apartments. Staying in an elite area doesn't give a full picture of this country. I can go to South or Central Delhi live in $30000 apartment or in South Mumbai and admire those cities.
Mate, if you have a underground train system that is a 161 years old, it's not going to compare to something built five years ago is it? Of course it is not going to look as modern!
true, which is why investment into public infrastructure is important and not solely driven by profit but sadly UK, just like USA, chose to "invest" heavily in wars, conflicts, and today pouring billions into gaz ge no side. Did you read the news lately?
@@Goye41 I have never heard of those words, what are they? - I think you will find that the London Underground has been all of those things otherwise we would still be using Victorian technology and steam trains.
That is true but what about the cost of fares and the breakdowns and the running late. This all happened when the Tories privatised the railways. The Chinese are not afraid of spending money on transport and infrastructure. The only time any money was spent on British railways was when Thatcher decided to privatise them and then she spent millions upgrading them to make them attractive to the buyers, who are now running them down to make maximum profits, just like the water companies

90% of china is still worse lol, go visit china, understand the reality of life outside a few cities.
The BBC is a peddler of biased lies, slander, misinformation and propaganda. An untrustworthy entity.
China is world class in everything you mentioned
But what he has to say about the current UK situation is spot on 👍
UK cannot be compared with China.China is far ahead of it.
Yes,this is the hard reality.
From what he said, i can imagine that he tell that china is a big city while uk is a village. For a big city dirtier than village is common to the entire world
Is this gentleman on the payroll of the CIA or MI6, at least for half the time?
If only those Blue skies were actually most of the time. We've had a bad year thus far in Beijing. Still, not as bad as years ago I'm told. In my 7 years in Beijing, 2024 pollution has been just as noticeable as when I first moved here.
On western pollution statistics websites you can actually see that most days of the year, Beijing has now less pollution than some of the major US and other Western big cities. China is changing very rapidly since 1949. Every decade brings changes that other country take half a century
alot of EVs and laws enforcement to only allow elctric / hydrogen buses in most cities helps .
Some of you sugarcoat China so much.
What about Tofu bridges, Hong Kongs coffin apartments, sewage oil, garbage pulled up in inner towns in China?
You were in China a long time ago. Things changed a lot since.
Not sure why you published this given your last time in China was 7 years ago, give it a refresh
What about Tofu bridges, Hong Kongs coffin apartments, sewage oil, garbage pulled up in inner towns in China?
London is totally overpriced, not worth it at all. I like Hong Kong for affordability❤
Way outdated view about China unfortunately
True. He was in China 2004-2015. Still talking about queiuing for taxi, way outdated

Older Chinese scarcity mindset... 88 % in absolute poverty in the 1980s
Yeah. China became rich so fast that the people didn't have time to evolve, too. China did not get to have an industrial revolution like some countries in the west, they were occupied by foreign forces. That's why China was so poor for so long. But China has caught up and now will surpass other industrial nations.
100% 👍

I would say China has Already SURPASSED the so-called developed west.
He has been instructed by his masters to smear China wherever possible! He used to work in the British embassy in Beijing some years ago.
Because he.only received the offer last week to be part of 1.6 billn budget of anti-china propaganda 😂
You left in 2015. That was 9 years ago. You are way out of date on things like air pollution.
This guy has absolutely no idea what he is talking about.
The truth is that China is already the safest country in the world, but in your England you know how things are, you drop something and they steal it before it hits the ground, what's more, they don't even wait and they steal it when you carry it on you xd
You cant do a video comparing if you were not in China 10 years ago, let's look at the changes in China in the last 40 years It was ultra impressive, and the changes are accelerating, so subtract the last 10 years of China and surely things changed a lot and at a greater speed than the previous decades.
Funny , isnt it. Why would someone tell his travel experience 9 hears later ? 😂

In China you can see EV vehicles are all over the places the air pollution has been decreasing in big city.
One can live in a foreign country for his entire life and still does not understand if he lives a bubble and with a colonial mindset.
Having lived in Asia for nearly 20 years, I now have a preference for it over the UK. While every place in the world has its pros and cons, I find myself favoring Asia.
There is nothing England about England anymore.
You lost touch with contemporary China. Your comment is outdated
This guy has absolutely no idea what he is talking about.
9 years in China feels like a life time chang. Come to visit again if you may.
Good to hear the differences first hand... China is an awesome country but there are a few areas they could still improve :
1. Spitting Culture - I saw a guy spit inside a train station on the tile flooring and nobody bat an eyelid.
2. Queueing - While the queueing culture has improved in the last 25yrs, it's still lacking. For example, people do not wait for passengers to come out of the train before going in.
3. Traffic - The traffic while orderly does not respect pedestrian crossing and will sometimes just try to run you down
4. Bicycles and Parking - Bicycles and cars are parked all over the pedestrian walks etc... sometimes neatly but often in a disorderly manner. I personally think the pedestrian walks are not for car parking.
However, I believe the above will improve over the next 10 years or so.
No 3 wrong about that.
Love the UK and China, thank you for sharing your thoughts.
What applies to the UK is going to apply to the US as well.

Your comments about humor in the UK and China are based on linguistic misunderstanding. With your elementary level of Chinese language, I wonder if people will have lively conversations with you in Chinese, knowing that you know little of their customs and culture. Remember that humor is based on a deep understanding of a lot of things in common, unfortunately, I don't see you have anything in common with the local people, so I cannot see how you can understand their humor at all.
giving this kind of guy working for the brits, you understand why the brits will never understand China.

(i.e. me)

You go to rural China and see horrendous poverty and sewage oil used in foods. The seafood markets also hits a new low in hygiene.

Your perspective on pollution is rather outdated. Beijing's air quality has improved dramatically since the early 2010s.
The thing is that China is constantly changing and evolving and improving. It is often said that if you visit China every 10 years, you will see a different country each time. This is known as "China speed."
That said, your overall assessment of China and UK is fair.

What about Tofu bridges, Hong Kongs coffin apartments, sewage oil, garbage pulled up in inner towns in China?
@DariusMazdehan-wl9du
1) Tofu bridges: consider this: there is no country on earth that has more bridges than China, with the vast majority of record breaking modern state of the art bridges being in China.

China and India should work together forgetting their border issues as two oldest civilizations.

Because the government has set a lot policies to invest in the future, and actually getting public and private sectors mobilized. Some policies may fail or backfire, but you'll still gain something out of those, while other projects starting to gain fruits.

How can the UK be called "intellectually diverse" when criticizing certain Middle Eastern countries is considered a crime now?
Now compare the comments you receive for video like this, CN vs UK ppl.
天啊,你的毛筆字寫得這麼好!😳😍😊👏🏻
我也被震惊了?可能不是他本人的字
Very accurate description. I spent 18 years living there, returning to the UK recently.
""But they are more organised and more clean whereas in the East are more vibrant and a little choas.""
You're confusing poorer countries in southeast Asia to China. The only thing China has in common with those countries are vibrancy. China is very orderly when you look at how they managing it's huge population.
@Pierina.24
Nice try bot.
Scandinavian countries, East Europe are paradise compared to China.
@@יונהאליראשון Ignorant troll alert.
Living in an elite area doesn't give the real view of a city.
With coffin apartments Hong Kong is horrendous.
Spot on, get me out of here I'm sick of this country
Perfect example of Western ignorance and living in past grandeur.
I really miss Monty Python.
U talk old days bro, go back see😂😂😂😂😂❤❤
MOST DEFINITELY
Mate, if you have a underground train system that is a 161 years old, it's not going to compare to something built five years ago is it? Of course it is not going to look as modern!
true, which is why investment into public infrastructure is important and not solely driven by profit but sadly UK, just like USA, chose to "invest" heavily in wars, conflicts, and today pouring billions into gaz ge no side. Did you read the news lately?
@@tigading2177 A war started by imperialists like China.
Ever heard of the words: RECONSTRUCTION; REPAIR; UPGRADE; REFURBISH; RENOVATE???
@@Goye41 I have never heard of those words, what are they? - I think you will find that the London Underground has been all of those things otherwise we would still be using Victorian technology and steam trains.
That is true but what about the cost of fares and the breakdowns and the running late. This all happened when the Tories privatised the railways. The Chinese are not afraid of spending money on transport and infrastructure. The only time any money was spent on British railways was when Thatcher decided to privatise them and then she spent millions upgrading them to make them attractive to the buyers, who are now running them down to make maximum profits, just like the water companies
Think you tried hard to be politically correct.
Propaganda 😮
How do you define propaganda?
@@blacksheep6683 fake, non factual, lies, constantly repeating the same message over and over again, you can tell, because the same story, the words repeated in verbatim, just listen to BBC, C4, and you will spot the pattern, simple if you know how.
oh, just another feeble attempt to say something negative about China by using perception of China 10 years ago.. Hahaha.. actually that shows they know they cannot do that on present China.. Pathetic but funny nonetheless.
Nowadays you can download a page in English and BLAM! Translated into perfect French. In a few seconds. Professional linguísts are an endangered species.
Doesn't take into consideration are nuances, humour sometimes. Wouldn't put my total trust into any auto translation.
@Mar-enfrance 20 years ago they translated "he left the room" to "il gauche la salle" but the way things are progressing I wouldn't bet against machines being BETTER than human
(Not that anyone really cares about nuance in a 20,000 word legal doc)
Uk is not on equal footing with China
Because China's gdp per capita is less than half of Britain.
very balanced thanks
