Michael, THANK YOU for covering this! This has always been one of my favorite Phil Collins songs! I remember seeing him in an interview and the person interviewing had asked him about this song and the genesis behind it. Phil answered that he had always wanted to do a blues song and never thought he would be able to achive it, so he collaborated with Eric Clapton and got the awesome song we have today! Powerful song, simple, but powerful, and the lyrics hit home! ✌️

I'm going to hazard a guess here that Daryl Stuermer (or rather his guitar tech) knows how to tune a guitar. It looks like the video was originally recorded from TV onto tape, then digitized, encoded at least once before being uploaded to RUclips, which likely led to it being re-encoded again. There's so many steps in here that could lead to the video being sharp: the tape player running too slow when recording or too fast when playing back, some frame rate conversion going wrong while encoding / re-encoding, or already the concert being sped up when broadcast in order to fit into the scheduling grid of the station.
@Michael Palmisano thanks for covering my requested video! i've never clicked a video faster! Great as always. Thanks again for all your lessons and all you do. Much appreciated brother
Thanks, Taylor for sponsoring this song. Such a great lyric. The official video is hilarious with Clapton and Collins (very tongue-in-cheek). How about another 'rain' song? "Our Roof Is Leaking" The BASS player on this one is Nathan East.
Darryl is vastly under-appreciated. He has a lot of solos and riffs that are very sensitive, but his flashy stuff is technically impeccable. He was a jazz and fusion guitarist before Genesis.
I'm probably wrong, but I wonder - is the "off" tuning is a recording issue rather than musicians messing up? Also, people sleep on Phil Collins as a vocalist. Dude could sing.
Sadly one of the main bassists on Phil’s first two albums, John Giblin, passed away a few days ago. You probably know him, but if not, you should check out him out.
This in my opinion is some of Clapton's best work.....I know Clapton doesn't play in this version but it's great ..... Have loved this song from the moment it came out ... Even before I understood the lyrics at a young age I was drawn to the guitar.... Great song thank you
you might not see this, but I just watched your radiohead reactions and I felt I had a band you’d absolutely love. They (were) a 7 piece band until the lead vocalist left, but I think they’re simply brilliant and still creating great music without him. I think you should definitely check out one of their songs because I’d love to see you break down their music as all I can say about it is that I’m the biggest fan of it. The band is Black Country, New Road and if I were to suggest any songs I’d have to say listen to either: The Place Where He Inserted The Blade, Bread Song, Basketball shoes, Concorde, Sunglasses, Laughing song (if you wanna hear one of the new vocalists). you’d be blown away by anything they’ve created to be honest. even the instrumental opener in their first album would be quite the treat. again, you may never see this but I’m a huge fan of their work and I’m now a huge fan of you so I thought I’d suggest it
The tuning is probably off due to how it was recorded….I think the guitarist is playing the solo around the 12th fret. Kinda hard to tell at that angle but I could be wrong.
On this Live Video - I believe Nathan East was on tour with Phil from the video. BUT - The ARRANGEMENT and BASS AND RIG set up for this tour, AND this song among others..... was created by the long time Collins Bassist and Music Legend Leland Sklar!
I’m guessing tuning is out because I’ve found that some songs are tuned to something other then 440hz at middle C… They is a theory that going a little higher is more natural to the human ear.. I’ve heard comparisons and I agree on the slightly higher pitch sounds better.. Paul Davids does a video on this..
I never trust it when its a live video. This could just be as simple as playback speed, tracking, audio compression, and then you take all that and put it on youtube.
Apologies if you have already done this, but I would love to see you do reactions to “the tale of Jenny and Screech (full)” by Ren, and also some Randy Rhoads (with or without Ozzy). I would love to hear your take on the guitar.
Nice listening and reacting. I believe it's a 1/5/6/4 progression but I feel like it works in A flat major with the original recording. Maybe it was easier to sing live a half step down in G

100% agreed. Definitely an issue in the chain from analog to digital.
Phil Collins has an unmistakable voice! You know it’s him within a few notes!

You’re so awesome for requesting this one!! I can’t wait to give it a shot! 🤘🏼🎸
I always felt this was Phil's take on Purple Rain.... In less of an obvious way that Sussudio was to 1999, but still.

Darryl Sturmer on guitar is just incendiary
😂

Nathan East on bass
Looks like Nathan East on Bass. Whole song has a Floyd vibe about it.

nathan east on bass. you've probably heard his work more often than you might realize.
Pino Palladino on the original.
@@simonbowkett124 oh damn really. Phil Collins, Clapton and Pino. insane
@@simonbowkett124 if all else fails, leland. lol

@@simonbowkett124 actually, I’m not familiar with him. Def will check him out. thanks!
My fav. Song of all time as well. Respect, Sir.

Awesome video....maybe my request is coming soon. Fingers crossed!
Great breakdown!!!!
It's incredible that you can do that so fast👍
Love this song

Good stuff. I'd add that the bass dropping a half step can also be the 5th of your iii chord, i.e. Jelly Roll - Save Me.
When it goes to the bridge and hits the II chord, it sounds like the bass note is still G. Its something thay Phil Collins did all the time!
and Genesis!

@@iceman10129 agreed - probably likely an old VHS that has been digitised after years of playing.

hi teacher ! Here from Belgium... Maybe a live version of American girl by Tom Petty ? The outro solo by Mike Campbell is outstanding every time !
Adoro
Nathan east is on bass
Hey can you please do a version of purple rain recorded in Syracuse, March 30 1985 live. The guitar solo would be fine.
Daryl Strummer does not get enough credit for his guitar chops.
nor does Daryl Steurmer - LOL
@@hulldanfan😂
Matteo Mancuso! That's all I'm saying for your next react video!
I love this song, but I will never play that Clapton solo when playing the song. It’s not a solo if not created by me.
No Leland?
This was the Both Sides Tour. NO Leland, and no Chester.
Michael, please do a reaction to Big Things Going Down - Dan Patlansky :)
….odd. When I think of Phil Collins….I just think drums.
Oh that snare sound is awful...
