They say you can't put a square peg in a round hole but can you get a hexagon from a circle? Watch my video to find the answer. . If you enjoy my video or learn something new please click the SUBSCRIBE button so you don't miss out on new videos.
RsIslandCrafts - Robin I'm using this method to make a bunch of little hexegons. I know it's not as stable as EPP but I have a crap load a scraps, I have only a little time between big projects to cut circles for these, and I have no time to properly cut hexagonal from freezer paper. And I don't want to buy any extra. So I'm working on these using this method little by little to make hexagon flowers. I want to make a spring time quilt with a bible passage on it with flowers at the bottom, so this is perfect!
StormChasingNinja I think it’s great that found a way that works for you and your schedule. That’s one of the things I love about RUclips - we can see different ways to do things and find what works for us. I like your plan. I think bible verses with the flowers will be beautiful. I would love to see your flowers if you would like to share. You can tag me on Instagram (@rsislandcrafts) or send me an email at rsislandcrafts@gmail.com.
RsIslandCrafts - Robin I followed you on Instagram with my private account and my more public account @crafting_and_sewing when I get to making it I'll definitely tag You!
RsIslandCrafts - Robin And I love watching all kinds of videos on RUclips about how to do stuff while I'm sewing, or crocheting. To get ideas on my next project. I like to do a little bit of everything. And I like to take techniques from one project or part of a pattern or something like that and apply it to other things. Next year when I get my project list finally done I'll start making dolls again, so learning different tips and tricks about literally every type of craft is good for me to improve on the dolls I've made in the past.
My favorite method of making hexies! Not always in the mood for EPP, so this is nice change of pace to use up scraps and make little items. That hexie ornament is real cute! I make bookmarks with hexies, silk ribbon and charms. Thanks for a grea tutorial!
Felizitas Standeford It is nice to watch things up a bit. I like this method for appliquéing hexies. It makes them a bit more 3D. I’ve always wanted to try silk ribbon embroidery. It’s on my list for this year.
Robin, you will probably love silk ribbon embroidery! It's a wonderful craft, makes beautiful things and even uses up old silk fabric if you have any on hand. Old silk blouses are great to make into ribbons!
I’m sure I will. I love hand work and hand dyed silks are gorgeous. I never thought about using silk blouses. Now I have something new to look for at thrift stores. Thanks for the tip!
Bev Cote' Thank you Bev! I know I like videos with close ups and lots of details so I figure it would be helpful for others too. I’m glad you found me too. I enjoy chatting with you. Enjoy!!
Wow! Incredible! Your tutorial is well thoughtfully put together. As a visual learner, I like your process of demonstrating on dark fabric and next light. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Blessings. 👌💐
Just saw this on a tic-tac-toe video. Thanks for your tutorial it was awesome you showed exactly what to do. Good for crafting but boy would use a lot more fabric for quilting. I like using the card stock and can use 2.5 strips and they match perfectly.
I agree. I can’t imagine making a quilt this way but if just making a few for a tote bag etc It could be fun. I like to use freezer paper for my EPP projects. Happy crafting!!
Hi Robin, Just watch your tutorial. It's great. You are a pleasure to watch. You explain exactly how to do something.,which is helpful to me. I like this idea, but I was thinking is you wanted a little body, could you cut a smaller piece of Heatn Bond, or something else, press it onto fabric and make a hexie. It's just a thought from an Intermediate sewer. Have a great day. Marie
HI Robin, Thanks for the video...what a great project for quick Christmas gifts. I have to admit I do not like hand sewing, but I will give this a try. What I would like to see is how you put the hexi's together in the circle. Thanks again!
Janette Atchley I love hand sewing but not for everything. Lol. Basically you just whip stitch the hexies together. I recently joined an ornament a long and the hexie wreath was the first ornament. It’s made similar but with a few more steps than what I just showed. There is a how to video that shows how they made the wreath. m.ruclips.net/video/ZkylwiDDnhk/видео.html I will be showing how to make hexie flowers from start to finish but it will be a few weeks. If you search sewing fabric hexies together there are several videos available. Just none like me 😉😂😊😱. Just kidding. Lol
This tutorial just popped up in my recommendations. I love how quick it is to make these hexagons - great for decorative purposes. I was thinking; if you sewed all the ends together when you've finished, then maybe you could cut the thread that's showing on the other side? Just a thought :)
I love fiskars circle cutter but it's really pricey. Instead I use a wide mouth canning lid as a template the I sew them exactly the same as demonstrated. I made a 20" table topper for my round kitchen table and it always gets a lot of compliments.
Thanks! If you are measuring your hexie on one side and not across the entire hexie you would start with a 4” circle. If you are measuring across the hexie I would try a 2” circle. As always cut and make one hexie first to see if your measurements are correct and that you like your finished hexie.
Abbey P I don’t have one within easy reach but It might be large enough for a mug. My only concern would the hole in the center. I’m clumsy and I would worry that if I don’t set my mug down just right It would be tilted. You could appliqué them onto a plain mug rug.
It might not be the process if you need very accurate hexagons. It does work well if you’d like to decorate a tote bag with hexagons or a different project. Some might not use this process to make a grandmother’s flower garden.

StormChasingNinja Excellent! I found you :)
I fell in love with your video and explanation of how to fold and sew these from a circle, it explained to me exactly how I was missing a side
I’m glad my video was helpful. I know how frustrating It can be when I miss that one little step each time. Happy stitching!
Hi Robin, first time triangles. Another way of doing patches and blocks. Great. Cant wait to have a go!
Thank you Jenny

Had to make another comment - that I use these hexies in place of cornerstones. Simply top stitch like an applique. Easy, easy. Thank you again.
That’s a great idea. Thank you for sharing.
Wow, you are an excellent teacher! Thank you so much, I was making a snippet roll and didn't have a clue how to make a hex.
Thank you so much. 🦩

Ann B Isn’t it fun? I saw this technique several years ago and thought it was so magical.

That circle maker! Gotta get one. Gotta make these.
These were fun to make, thank you
You’re very welcome. Glad you like them!
Try using a CD or DVD to make the outline for the circles. Works great.
I'll have to try that! Thanks!

Beautiful 😍

Canning jar lids are the perfect size for many things. Hexagons would be lovely on a round table.
Great tutorial
Coldfusion1205 Thanks!
Gonna try with Heat n Bond and iron as I go. then tiny pompom in center. Make great ornaments for a grandchild's tree.
Wonderful idea! I think adding a pompom would be fun! Perfect ornament for a grandkid’s tree. Nothing to break 😉
You are brilliant. ♥
You are very sweet.
So very cool!
Thanks!
Easy. Wow! Thanks.
You're very welcome.
Thanks
Good morning now that is cute one
Beverley Simmons Thank you!
love the tutorial , to get an inch hexie what size circle do i use,
Thanks! If you are measuring your hexie on one side and not across the entire hexie you would start with a 4” circle. If you are measuring across the hexie I would try a 2” circle. As always cut and make one hexie first to see if your measurements are correct and that you like your finished hexie.
Could these make a mug rug!?

Can you see them together!? Machine and by hand!!
Abbey P You could. I think I have the most fun by just playing with designs. I get an idea and then I play around with It until It works. Go for It!!
Good morning will I did not sell any quilts but sold 2 pairs of socks and hats oh my
Beverley Simmons Congratulations!!
Ah ty I see what I have been doing wrong with my knots
That doesn't seem accurate enough, no matter how carefully you do it.
It might not be the process if you need very accurate hexagons. It does work well if you’d like to decorate a tote bag with hexagons or a different project. Some might not use this process to make a grandmother’s flower garden.
