    I have made a number of log cabins, and they are easy and fun, Now I will definitely do a hexagon log cabin. While watching you make this I was thinking about your accent strip, which I like, but it made me think of a black accent strip cut at 1", so it would finish at 1/2", added after each row to give it a stained glass look.
    Thank You for sharing Your Time and Your Talent with all of us.

      Thank you. I think it’s a great idea to use the narrow black strip to divide the rounds. I don’t always care for sashings but when I use them I do prefer a narrow sashing.

    i've been sewing for years, but i have an appreciation for how much i didn't know at first...you do a great job of thoroughly explaining the steps...wish i'd had youtube back in the day. i'm teaching my grandsons to sew and one of the first things was a leader and ender piece of fabric, new sewers need this tipHelpful for me is finding new ideas, i made a hexagon quilt, handstitch, my hands were sore after tgat.😂 i love the hexagon shape so this will be easier on my hands. i can't decide which look to sew first, ideas are flowing 😊👍🏻 thank you

      Thank you. Yes, I’ve often thought about how different It might have been if we’d had RUclips earlier in life for a variety of things. I have too many ideas for what I’d like to sew next too. I have a notebook where I make lists of ideas. That way I won’t forget a fun idea and when I can’t think of what to sew that day I can refresh my creative mind with my previous ideas. Happy Creating!!

    11:30 keeping a little piece of scrap fabric to sew over at the end of each seam! what a FANTASTIC idea! thank you for sharing. Being a 'baby-boomer', we were taught to "waste not, want not" and that included NOT wasting so much cotton at the end of each seam. Brilliant!

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  2 года назад +1

      Thank you. I learned that little trick early in my quilting journey. One of my favorite. I’ve never liked throwing away the wasted pieces of thread I lived with my grandparents until I was 13. I was definitely taught waste not want not. Grandma also said “do the best you can with the tools you have on hand”.

    Terrific tutorial as always (rude commenter notwithstanding). I've become enamored with hexagons though I'm about 10 years behind the One Block Wonder/Stack and Whack trend. Remarkably little in the internet sphere regarding machine sewn hexagons. Really love this log cabin hexagon. I'm not a big fan of log cabin quilts. But I love this log cabin hexagon. Thanks for taking time to demonstrate. These would also be nice during holidays to gift with cookies etc. A beautiful gift with high utility.

    P. S. I think that an equilateral triangle ruler is very helpful in providing a better squaring for the line up for the trims. I experimented with the block with my 60 degree ruler to same hence my recommendation. Further, this block is a really interesting way to use scrip scraps for a wonky block with good movement....a nice change from crumb blocks. And when using interesting prints, I think that fussy cutting goes a long way toward improving the final look.

    Once again your excellent video has inspired me on project that I am currently working on! One of the fabrics I am using on a BOM project is a batik with polka-dots. (The fabric name is actually called circle dots but it is essentially wonky polka-dots! 👍) I have been thinking about what I want to do for the backing of this quilt using up project scraps. This project uses hexagons, equilateral triangles, and 60° diamonds. Log Cabin hexagons will be a great way to use some of the scrap strips! I am excited as I can now be thinking of and working on the scrap blocks for the backing while waiting the next BOM. Thanks Robin!

    • @rsislandcrafts

      I think using your quilt scraps to make hexie log cabins for the back of your quilt is a brilliant idea. When working on a BOM I tend to get fidgety after I’ve finished that months block(s). Making blocks for the backing would keep me out of trouble. Meaning starting 4 new projects while waiting for the next blocks. 😉 🤣

    • @annataylor7226
      @annataylor7226 3 года назад

      @@rsislandcrafts I understand that problem all too well! 🤣 This is my first BOM and I decided to make another quilt pattern at the same time from the same designer (Jaybird Quilts) that used the same number of blocks but different blocks. I thought that would help me not get tempted to jump ahead. Plus I have been doing some of your projects. I was still getting tempted! This should now keep me safe from temptation! 😉😆🤣

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  3 года назад +1

      Thanks. You can make any size block that you need. You just stop sewing when you reach the size you need. Sometimes It works better if you use narrow strips for smaller blocks depending on how many rounds you want. If you uses 2.5” strips for an 8.5” block you would have less rounds than if you used 1.75” strips. I like to make a test blocks to see what I prefer. The extras can be given as a gift.

      Great idea. Many times I’ll make the last round of a log cabin or other project wider. That way I can trim my block to size instead of having a smaller block. I’m getting closer to the perfect block if that exists 😉

    Great tutorial, Robin!! I never thought to reuse my "dull" used blades and mark them "paper". Now, my question...does batting naturally dull our rotary blades? If so, I will need to designate one rotary blade cutter for my batting...or is it just a personal preference of yours to have different cutting blades for different materials? Of course, I have my favorite rotary cutter that I use about 95% of the time, however, I do have several cutters and could certainly designate one just for "paper" and or batting. Again, thanks for the tutorial. You are always very easy to follow and always have a wealth of other knowledge to impart while you are completing the project.

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  3 года назад +1

      I personally feel that batting dulls the blade. 🤷‍♀️. I actually have a batting cutter in addition to the paper cutter 🤣. I will trim a bag that has batting with my old cutter. Or trim a quilt. I need accuracy for those. But if I’m just cutting a bunch of batting scraps for postcards them I’m using an old mat and an old blade.

    • @TheJcs555
      @TheJcs555 3 года назад +1

      @@rsislandcrafts Not quite sure what you mean by "batting fills the blade." I was raised having scissors for paper and scissors for fabric and NOT to intermingle...maybe I should do the same for batting and fabric...keep two separate cutters..is that what you are saying? Thanks!! :-)

    • @rsislandcrafts
      @rsislandcrafts  3 года назад +1

      @@TheJcs555 I’m sorry. Auto correct caught me again. I feel that the batting dulls the blade. When I cut fabric I want It to be easy and the blade to be sharp. By having a dedicated rotary cutter for fabric only hopefully the blade will stay sharper longer. I have fabric only scissors and I appreciate their sharpness anytime I try to cut fabric with my other scissors and those scissors are too dull.

    I saw a video by Sewing with Abeygale and she was doing a similar hexagon. She showed that after you sew your first (top) strip, sew the next and subsequent strips around the left side (counterclockwise). This method will make all of your seams the same, i.e., you won’t have the triangular shaped strip at your starting point (top)-unless, of course you want that shape as a design element.

    • @rsislandcrafts

      Without seeing your steps it’s hard to guess where you went off. If your strips are cut accurately, and your seams are all equal, then It has to be the way you’re trimming. This is a weird block. Are you trimming and lining up your ruler and the previous seam? Making sure each time you use the same measurement? I’m sorry but that’s the only thing I can think of. I had a wonky side on one because of my trimming. Good luck! Even a wonky potholder or candle mat will still work.
