Earlier this year I did a bunch of pink/orange/red very wonky “roses” like this, added black/white improv leaves blocked out with some green large really kind of not so attractive dots…all turned out fun…oh and added a couple of appliqué left over pieced lady bugs…it’s pretty loud so haven’t quilted it and not sure where it can live lol…was really fun though🧩
Fun block!!! I could see making a wide range of sizes, randomly spaced around the quilt background.....probably using plain fabric. Thank you for the video. I always enjoy them ☺️👍💕
I LOVE this! My favorite sewing time is with scraps and crumbs...so this perfect for that. Thank you for validating my "play time". I would use this for baby/crib size quilts in a heartbeat.
I absolutely love 💕 the hexi blocks!! I started a Hexi EPP a few months before I retired. It is a work in progress!!😆 I plan on giving it to my granddaughter on her 18th birthday. I have 15 yrs and 2 mths to get it done! I definitely am going to give your method a try! Thanks for sharing and giving us inspiration. I really enjoy your tutorials/videos. Thank you!
I would use all kinds of colors and white. I would make a lot of these blocks into a throw size quilt and give them as gifts! Love using scrapes and not wasting them by throwing them away! 😃
I think what I enjoy most about your videos is the creative use of bits and pieces to make stunning blocks. You also share what may not work; love that!!! I am looking to the new year with plans of using what I have (not a big stash but it is sitting in a bin or two) and also exploring thrift shops if need be. When I started quilting a few years ago, I got a bit caught up in the "collections" and must haves we see in popular quilting videos and on IG. As I have become a more confident quilter, I am pushing back a bit and being more mindful in my purchases. Quilters of the past used what was on hand and that is what is calling to me. I am hoping to donate quilts as well. Lofty goals but hey why not!!
Love this! I too have got caught up in buying too much fabric - I console myself by saying I will use every last bit. It is amazing how far you can stretch your fabric (figuratively obviously) if you choose not to waste even the smallest bit. Good luck with all your projects in the year to come!
I like this freeform style! I have a stack of fabric I was going to donate but I think I'm going to make some off cut strips because this looks so fun!
Wow Sis,once again you have shown me why you're my favorite quilter on RUclips. The technique turned out amazing...no measuring,no pattern, just beauty!! I can't wait to make a quilt with this technique. Thank you so much 💙💙💙💙
@@ScrapFabricLove Awww,it's just so refreshing to find such a like minded quilter. Because of my health I'm kind of quilting vicariously through you however I know I'll be well enough soon to get back at it....meantime thank you so much for being my "sister in quilt"😄
I love EPP and hexagons. I would start with a larger first hexagon and make quilt blocks. I would want the first hexie to shine in the block. I too have thought of doing this. The first hexagon would make a great fussy cut I SPY quilt. ❤
Looks like fun! Love the block. I have bins of scraps so it’s a perfect one for me to try. Thanks for the ideas! As always, I love your approach to quilting!
Hello Kristen, I really like the ease of making this block. Not to much thinking. And the fact that you can use scraps to create it. So the biggest choice is choosing your colors of strips. Then sew it looks fun to do. Most of the scraps I have right now, are flannel I need a flannel quilt, for my sister with batting and backing. It was a little bit heavy but warm. So I'm not sure I'm up to making another quilt quite that heavy right now. but we shall see how many different scraps I can accumulate in cotton. that's mostly the fabric I like to quilt with. So I'm going to save this video, for future reference. and ideas Thanks for posting. looking forward to seeing more of your videos.
Those are really cute. I've only used strips with the bigger template that were from a jelly roll. I love these with the scrappy look. Thanks, great tutorial.
As I watch you I was thinking there's constant sewing, cutting, and pressing that one might be hard "pressed" to think about worries. Then you said repetitiveness. Exactly! And cutting it into a square simplifies the joining. I have seen people make them look like roses too.
I love how yesterday I look up hexi blocks and here you are reading my mind. LOL I love it. I did this on accident once trying to do a rose. LOL it doesn't look as pretty but I at least know how to end it now. I just stopped because I was like now what? LOL
I thought Christmas colors or patriotic flag colors would be nice. Then I remembered I have some football fabric scraps from a prior project. I'm thinking a large 5-6"hexie in the center and then smaller strips on three sides followed by white or a solid of the team colors on the other three sides. Licensed professional team fabric is expensive. I think this is a great way to make it stretch. Thank you for the inspiration! Hope I can get to the project soon...😊
Such a cute log cabin. One tip on measuring hexies. The standard way of measuring for size of hexie is not across the center but to measure the length of one side. So the one you measured as 1 and a half across will measure 3/4 an inch along one side. A hexie that is 1 1/2 along the side will measure about 3 inches across. It makes a huge difference when using purchased papers or choosing a printed template for cutting your own centers. I learned this the hard way last year when I learned English paper piecing. I like your idea and will make this log cabin block to make mug rugs for holiday gifts this year.
Thanks! Yes I know the thing about measuring the sides - it just has never made sense to me 😂. It doesn’t matter what size hexie you use for this block though so whatever template you have will be fine! Some folk in the comments had great ideas about using a much bigger hexie and making it an I spy kind of block.
Awesome. I have done with pentagon scrappy block before but have not tried with hexagon. Will try. I love no measurement kinda way! Very relaxing. I will use many colors. Thinking of a baby boy blanket and the hexagon would be a big fuzzy cut novelty fabric as the focal point I spy quilt? Fun fun
What a great idea - I am not a huge fan of log cabin as my brain scrambles up what colour goes where - but I never thought of putting it on a hexi - I really like the look, I will have to give it a try.
Neat idea. I've been wanting to make a quilt coat and have seen the "how-to's" to make one, and using your design ideas would be neat for a jacket/coat.
I love this idea and it gave me an idea too do the same hexi style but sort of court house style, do opposite sides same time and same color , then next one to them keep doing darker and lighter. The colors should swirl. Think I'll try it mug rug size when I get home again. I haven't sewed hexi's together yet but plan on individual stuff.
I saw a written pattern for hexigon pot holders that I thought I would try. They way they had it I could not figure out how to put on the last strip. I like how you trim after putting on each strip and just keep going. Easy.
@@ScrapFabricLove Or (yes I thought about this for a while lol) make a whole quilt top with these Huge hexies - would have to make a standard template so they all fit together. That could be so pretty and scrappy.
I watched this video yesterday but didn't comment. I had to think on it for a while, lol. I wonder how it would work out using a triangle shaped starting piece? I have half a million scrappy aqua triangles already cut. I'll think about for a while. At the moment I'm working on a hand stitched yo-yo quilt. 200 done, 2400 to go. Ha!
I love this! Randomness is my thing! I’ve never seen a hexi Log Cabin but I really like it! My only problem would be when to stop! Lol, I might end up with ONE huge hexi, but that would be cool, too. Aw thanks so much! So glad this made you want to go get creative. Have fun with it! And I think you could do it QAYG but you’d either need straighter strips or accept that you end up with an even wonkier finish as the trimming would be more difficult… unless you folded the batting under before trimming after every pass which might make it a bit more tedious…but certainly doable!
I think it would be cool to flip sides after you get it big enough. Like the green and white one after it's a 10 inch square size start adding green on the white sides and make it into a lap quilt? Just keep adding strips together to make them long enough and keep going? Fun to play with thank you for the ideas
