😍UPDATE TUTORIAL: ruclips.net/video/zbMGx5Pecj8/видео.html 😍 I hope you enjoy my updated version to this tutorial, you will find extra tips and everything is much easier to see. Happy Sewing! 😍
Oh my goodness, shut the door and move onto Christmas. I;ve been quilting for about 12 years and NEVER have I cut anything by using the geometric lines on my ruler. My husband was totally impressed with what I produced today. Thank you for this video. Just kept stopping and starting at each point, just to check I was on point. Thanks again.. Great Job
😂 I love your energy so much Susan! I am sure there is a lot you can teach me when it comes to quilting. But I sure am glad I could teach you something new 😀
Thank you making sewing fun again for me. I can follow your instructions and being old does not mean not being able to sew any more. Even with a bit of a wobble in my hands and my eyesight not as good as it once was I can do it. Yay!!!
Well, here I am 1 year later and I have made about 10 of these!! what fun - I have made Halloween and Christmas ones. They are a huge hit! and really once I got the hang of the 60 degree ruler - I was cutting out triangles like crazy. Thanks so much Tamara!
I made several and used Christmas fabric on one side, valentine print on the other. Reversible. He valentine was an allover print so i didn't worry about matching anything.
Now I have made 5 easter tappers. One for myself and the rest for my 4 kids. Sent one lady from Texas to your Channel . Thank you sooo much. Gisela in Sweden
So glad to hear it Barbara. I have an updated tutorial that will make it easier to follow along. You can check that out here: ruclips.net/video/zbMGx5Pecj8/видео.htmlsi=NM_H_rPj-WSAAg_N
love the way you make this table topper. Glad I found you. Thanks. Will make a few for gifts. for Halloween and Christmas. Great way to use up my fabric.
Well that’s something I didn’t know! Makes sense though. Thanks for telling me🤩 I really need to upgrade my mat and then never leave it on its side again! 😬
This is a great tutorial. You are really good at your explanations, nice and clear directions! Thank you 😊. I have a question though ... is there a reason why you decided to assemble the three layers like you did, by tucking under the fabric edges before top stitching … instead of putting the layers together wrong sides and then just turning outside in to finish? I’m wondering if that would still work for this piece like I’ve done with bags, etc.
Hi Pele! Thank you for sharing that with me, it is my goal to be as clear as possible and it is nice to know that I am actually helping! I had considered doing it the way you mention, however I was worried the points wouldn't end up as crisp so I chose to fold in and iron. However if you do try the other way please let me know how it goes! Another way to do it would be to add Bias Tape. If you have never added bias tape before I have a tutorial walking you through all the steps at minute 5 in this tutorial here: ruclips.net/video/tXLFlCALsfE/видео.html Hope this helps! Happy Sewing :)
I just finished one of these in patriotic fabrics. Thank you for the tutorial! If you wanted to make a larger one, would you just use additional strips or wider strips, and would you still use 60* cuts?
Hi Louise, yes you can but the deeper the triangle and longer your strips will need to be so you can still get 6 triangles from the strip. Perhaps make a triangle template out of paper to figure out how long the strip of fabric will need to be first. Happy sewing!
Thank you for a great tutorial and it was just what I needed for my round table. I could use my jelly roll ...I love the way you finished without the binding ...I will be using more of your patterns.
Thanks Cindy! I did finish it a different way as I wanted sharp points. But as some have said it goes faster just laying right sides together sewing around the edge then flipping right side out 😅
This is such a lovely idea, thank you. I have sewn them all together but it isn't lying flat. It wants to puff up in the centre. Any idea how to rectify, please?
Tamara, thank you so much for this video. If I were to add more strips would it make it larger? I was thinking instead of 5, adding 7 strips. Would I have to make any adjustments? I have a larger coffee table I would like to put it on.
Hi Victoria, if you add more strips you will not have enough width if you cut the strips from selvage to selvage. You can still do it though! You will just need longer strips to start with. Or a second set as you will not get as many triangles out of each strip when they are larger. I hope that makes sense. I have been contemplating making a larger one too! I hope it turns out for you. And if you make a larger one this method: ruclips.net/video/T4N_3oC7UFE/видео.html may help attach the backing to the front easier then the method I showed in this video.
Oh my! I appreciate your explanation. You are good. I enjoy listening and oh , did i learn something. I never knew about the placing strips and the way you ending it with top and batting. You are good. Can you do binding too? I am so afraid of doing binding. LOL
Thank you so much Lutisha! I haven't done binding on this project however I totally think you could. Just follow the steps I share at the 5 min mark in this tutorial: ruclips.net/video/tXLFlCALsfE/видео.html and you will be able to add binding properly :) I just put up a tutorial on how to make potholders as well and it uses a cheaters version of binding that you could try too if you want. Maybe practice binding on a square item first before doing the hexagon shape? Happy Sewing!
Hello. Can you tell me where to get the measurements? It would be enough to put a piece of paper next to each piece and write the measurements there. You have a video on you tube and do you think everyone knows your speech? The work is beautiful. I have nothing to do with it because I don't know the dimensions. I didn't even find it in the transcript! Mary from the Czech Republic
This was the easiest table topper tutorial I have seen. Do I need full WOF or can I subsitute fat quarters. I have some really cute ones I want to use for this. If so, how can I convert? Total newby here. Thank you sweets
I am so glad to hear that Kathy! It is on my list of to do's to refilm this so it is easier to follow. Yes , you could use fat quarters but it will make it harder to have the same designs you see in this tutorial. It will probably have a more "patchwork" feel which I think would look adorable as well! The biggest thing to keep in mind is how many triangles you can cut from the width of the fabric you are using. Perhaps make a paper template first to visually see how large the triangle is. Happy Sewing!
@@TamarasJoyDIY thank for responding so quickly Tamara. I actually watched again and noted that you cut your strips 2.5 by WOF, well by golly that's a jelly roll strip. I can do that. LOL Best to you.
Really liked the part on how to use the angle lines on the ruler. It would have been nice to see how you tucked/folded in the corners, because there is a lot of bulk there
Thank you for the suggestion. As I make more videos I am trying to film more of the process so it is easier to follow. Hopefully future tutorials will be of more help.
Hello Edwina, I have not made any other sizes but I would imagine the same angled cut will give the same outcome, it would just end up being a strip shorter. Hope that helps!
@tamara I watched this several times, you make it look so easy. But I cut my 6 and for some reason, they’re not the same size 😱😪 any idea what I did wrong?!

Really excellent tutorial. I can honestly say I’ve never made anything like that. I need to do this for the holidays. Very nice. P.S. I love the way you say iron ❤️❤️❤️
Thank you so much Sue!!! It is such a fun project I highly recommend trying it💝 😂lol now I keep listening to myself say iron to see what is different😂😂😂I went back to watch the video and hear me....now I realize I sure say iron a lot☺️🤣🤣🤣hope you tag me in a photo when you make the table topper💕
Tamara's Joy I love it. Don’t be silly. You’re teaching us how to sew, iron and press. Plus what an excellent definition of iron be press (VRA that would be a great video) my daughter told me once I said “exactly“ a lot and I do. But oh well. Keep up the great videos
Ha ha! Well you may be right...video idea✅ I had my husband pull up pronunciations of the word iron last night because I wanted to know how other people say it😂now that I know I am not sure I will be able to adjust. I guess it will just be my own quirk🤷♀️😂💝the things you learn😆
Like the simplicity of this table topper. One thing I'd do different is attaching the backing. I'd lay the top and backing right sides facing then place them on the batting; sew 1/4 inch around the edge LEAVING an opening on one side to turn the topper right side out. Then do a 1/8 or 1/4 inch around the entire outer edge, thus closing the opening.
Thank you Betty! I have been asked if that would work but since I have yet to try that method I have been unable to say if it works. Have you done it this way? My only concern was that I wouldn't end up with crisp points. But the more I contemplate it the more I think your way could be much easier. I am going to have to give it a try and then I may need to make a new tutorial :) Anything to make this project easier for a beginner.
@@TamarasJoyDIY Tamara, this is how I made it. Worked perfectly. I use a chopstick (or knitting needle) to poke out the points and it works like a charm. If I knew how to upload a picture, I would :) Thanks for your tutorial. I researched several and your instructions were the best!
Ha Ha! Thanks Christina, editing can sure help with that! I use my stitch ripper just like anyone else. I promise 😊But I hope it looks easy enough to try. Because if I can do it so can you!
Thank you for this tutorial. I am anxious to try it with leftovers from a jelly roll however the patterns are directional. I’m very challenged in my ability to visualize a future cut. Would turning one of the matched pairs result in the pattern being consistent when the triangles are pieced? Thank you
If all 5 strips of fabric are different then the piece will have a pattern. If you make the two outer strips the same fabric and the next two pieces the same then all five "rings" of the hexagon will match up and be the same fabric. I hope that makes sense. The middle strip of fabric will always line up and stay the same. Happy Sewing!
love your tutorials your instructions are easy to follow. I do have a question I'm trying to combine two of your ideas into a project your easy christmas trea skirt and table topper.. The table topper is too small and is not round .Trying to make an interesting table cloth for an outside small round metal table about 38" with an umbrallla hole. just can't quite wrap my head around the idea . any thought on how to do this.
Thank you Marilyn :) As for your question, you could add more strips to this table topper and cut out larger triangles. You would just end up having to sew a lot more strips together and more then one 42" length section as the larger the triangle gets the less triangles you will cut out of one section. OR you could check out my Christmas tree skirt tutorial: ruclips.net/video/7r1BnFzOcKY/видео.html where you could easily do the same idea without cutting a slit down the center. And if you get fabric that is wider than 42" then you can do this and end up with a larger table cloth. Then just hem the edge. Hope that helps! Happy sewing :)
Hi Linda, if you want each row to match up then you can only use three different fabrics. You will lay out your strips like this: 1,2,3,2,1, Then when you cut your triangles and flip them they will still line up. Hope that helps! Also, I have a better way of finishing up the hexagon these days which I show in this tutorial here: ruclips.net/video/hitLz2ojjdQ/видео.html Happy Sewing!
Hi Jill, I haven't used a triangle ruler but only because I don't own one. It sounds handy and if I had one I think I would try it. Hope you enjoy sewing this table topper :)
Hi Rebecca! I have an updated version of this tutorial that I will post this Friday morning. It will walk you through everything in a much better way. You could use two fabrics for sure! 5 strips makes the nicest size topper, I think. But you could do four strips and it will still be a decent size. Hope this helps.
Hi Joyce, If it is puckering just a little bit, it can be fixed with just a good pressing. If it is severe you may need to pick out the seam and try again. Use more clips or pins to try to keep things from shifting. Hope that helps! Also, I have a new video for this tutorial that you may appreciate. You can find it here: ruclips.net/video/zbMGx5Pecj8/видео.html
Ok I tried this tonight and my hexagon came out very bumpy once all pieced and sewn. Tips? Thanks for posting this. It was really helpful to know how to use the angles on my ruler and also how to piece the strips for different looks. 😊
Hi Jelena! Did you iron the seams down before sewing the pieces together? And again once the top was all sewn? Another thing to consider is what way you are sewing the triangles together. I like to start from the outer edge and sew towards the smaller point when putting the triangles together. Also, after ironing all the seams flat then when you do a stop stitch to attach the pieces together it should help as well? Hope this helps. Let me know?
Thank you Erika! I hope to make another one in the future with better footage. As for making is smaller you could do 1"strips but I don't think I would go any smaller then that. and perhaps only four strips? The center point may become complicated if the second seam from the second strip is too close to it though. Just a thought.
Hi Ada, you can add more strips to make a larger one for sure! But then you will need to make all the strips longer or make a second set as your triangles will end up cut larger. Hope that helps! Happy sewing!!
You could, it would be adorable! I also suggest you Check out this tutorial. There is also a pdf download for sizes. I think it could work for a hexagon coaster too. ruclips.net/video/0IcN5nS_OFs/видео.htmlsi=Is6nBTODsHYAIehq
Thank you! You will trace the backing to be the same size as the top. And then trim the batting down to whatever seam allowance you plan on using. Hope that helps!
Hi Miranda, Yes and No. yes you would still use a 60 degree angle to cut. And yes you can add more strips. But it will make the triangle larger so you will not be able to get 6 triangles out of one set of fabric from selvage to selvage. You will need to make two sets of strips. Hope that makes sense! Happy sewing!!💜
If it is bowing when you are sewing the strips together I would suggest sewing one strip in one direction then flipping the project and sewing the next strip in the opposite direction. If it is bowing when sewing the triangles together I am not sure what is happening. Make sure you are using a cotton fabric to avoid stretch, press the fabric without moving the iron around as that will warp the fabric. Sew 3 triangles together and 3 together then do the final seam. And do this all slowly. I hope t his helps Rae. And if you are new to sewing sometimes it is just that it takes practice and a few tries. things get easier over time. You got this!!!!!
I wish I could Lutisha, but without seeing your project and how to pieced it together no suggestions are coming to mind. Try giving it a good press in the center?
I followed your instructions but when I put the two half’s together there if a ripple in the middle, the hexagon will not lay flat, any ideas and can I fix this?
I have an updated version of this tutorial coming out this friday. It should help things be a bit clearer. But I would suggest trimming away some of the bulk from the center seams to help it lay flat. I also find that attaching it to fusible fleece helps hold everything nice and flat.
I love this pattern, I just can’t get them to lay flat. I have tried 4 times now and after I sew the 3 and 3 together matching seems and sew the final strip they buckle in the middle . Help... what am I doing wrong
I am not sure. Have you ironed the back seams open? Or to one side before sewing the two halves together? This may help. Also, depending on how bubbled they are it may resolve itself when being attached to the batting?
Tamara, I have a problem when I cut my fabric with my cutter. It’s the first time that I cut with that "devil machine" !! I have problem to make it cut and it’s a brand new that I just buy!! Do you push very hard on your cutter or is it supposed to just roll and it cuts 2-3 strips??
If I cut through more then one piece of fabric at a time I do add pressure. And if your cutter is new the blade should be sharp. But if you are finding the blade needing a lot of pressure then the blade is not sharp enough. Eventually all blades dull, so then buying replaceable blades will help. Hope that helps! Happy Sewing🧵🥳
@@TamarasJoyDIY thank you! It's not very thick! Just thought I would use what I have. Love this pattern, it was sooo fast and easy! My daughter is going to love it!!!
since you did not bind the project why didn't you do the stitch and flip method? it would save all that folding in and pressing. The top stitching would be the same and would close the opening you left to flip the project right side out.
I did consider doing that but I was worried the points wouldn't be as crisp. But if you do try that method please come back and let me know how it went! I am curious 😀
@@TamarasJoyDIY stitch and flip would work beautifully and is easier in my view without any compromise in point sharpness.... Particularly given the 60 degree angle

Thanks so much for your kind words! And I am going to try it your way next as it sounds easier!
@@TamarasJoyDIY I'm shocked you didn't do it that way, it is incredibly easy... People have been using the technique for decades.
Thanks
New subscriber, I love these table toppers. This would be fun to make a Christmas tree skirt. Thanks for sharing your time with all of us. ❤️
Yes! I want to make one into a Christmas tree skirt. I think that’s a great idea!!!!!
Es maravilloso tu trabajo, me encanta!! 👏👏👏🏵
You make everything look so easy!💗
I want to try this but make it reversible St Pats on one side Valentine’s on the other
Hi Jill! Let me know how that goes. I wanted to do the same thing but was afraid my lines wouldn’t match up on both sides. It’s a great idea!!!!
@@TamarasJoyDIY never thought about that!🤷♀️
Hi Tamara, at the beginning of the video, the topper in your left hand has alternating strips. How did you accomplish that pattern? Thank you
Hi Linda, if you want each row to match up then you can only use three different fabrics.
Wow!!! I am going to try this.🧡
Let me know how it goes! I promise it’s actually pretty easy!!! Happy sewing 🧵💝
Hey Tamara! Canyou tell me how to do it with three strips of fabric?
Hi Lutisha, you would do it the same way. Widen the strips if you want it larger or it can be smaller if you only use three strips at the same width.
If you line salvages along the triangle you get more
Wow.
❤❤❤
Do you ever use a 60 degree triangle for making your cuts?
Hi Jill, I haven't used a triangle ruler but only because I don't own one. It sounds handy and if I had one I think I would try it. Hope you enjoy sewing this table topper :)
Could I only use 2 fabrics and cut 60 degree triangles using coordinating fabric. Just wondering how this would look.
Hi Rebecca! I have an updated version of this tutorial that I will post this Friday morning. It will walk you through everything in a much better way. You could use two fabrics for sure! 5 strips makes the nicest size topper, I think. But you could do four strips and it will still be a decent size. Hope this helps.
I have made a better tutorial for this project if you want to check that out for better understanding: ruclips.net/video/zbMGx5Pecj8/видео.html
How did u keep from puckering thevmiddle when u put the 2 halfes together
Hi Joyce, If it is puckering just a little bit, it can be fixed with just a good pressing. If it is severe you may need to pick out the seam and try again. Use more clips or pins to try to keep things from shifting. Hope that helps! Also, I have a new video for this tutorial that you may appreciate. You can find it here: ruclips.net/video/zbMGx5Pecj8/видео.html
Can you use jelly rolls for this?
What is the length of the 5 fabric pieces ? Thanks for the nice explanation
It will be from selvage to selvage. So around 42"
It would have been beneficial to know the seams were to be pressed open before sewing the next triangle.
Excellent thanks 👌
You are most welcome 😊
You made this so easy to follow! I'm trying to figure out how to adapt it for mug mat or trivet-sized. How wide would you make your strips?
Thank you Erika! I hope to make another one in the future with better footage. As for making is smaller you could do 1"strips but I don't think I would go any smaller then that. and perhaps only four strips? The center point may become complicated if the second seam from the second strip is too close to it though. Just a thought.
Hi Tamara love this project can have more than 5 strips to make a larger table topper?
Hi Ada, you can add more strips to make a larger one for sure! But then you will need to make all the strips longer or make a second set as your triangles will end up cut larger. Hope that helps! Happy sewing!!
@@TamarasJoyDIY okay great do I stay in the 60 degree mark if I decide to make a 7 - 2 1/2 strip?
Yes. I would stay with the same degree for cutting.

Can I use smaller strips to make a coaster? Like 1.5
You could, it would be adorable! I also suggest you Check out this tutorial. There is also a pdf download for sizes. I think it could work for a hexagon coaster too. ruclips.net/video/0IcN5nS_OFs/видео.htmlsi=Is6nBTODsHYAIehq
Wow....Super
Hope you try it out! It's not as hard as it may seem :)
@@TamarasJoyDIY very nice
How much fabric do I need to buy to make this?
Great project! What would be the dimensions for the batting and the fabric for the back? Thank you.
Thank you! You will trace the backing to be the same size as the top. And then trim the batting down to whatever seam allowance you plan on using. Hope that helps!
If I wanted to make the diameter larger can I just continue a pattern Outward on the strips? Instead of 5 strip maybe 9? Would it still be 60 degrees?
Hi Miranda, Yes and No. yes you would still use a 60 degree angle to cut. And yes you can add more strips. But it will make the triangle larger so you will not be able to get 6 triangles out of one set of fabric from selvage to selvage. You will need to make two sets of strips. Hope that makes sense! Happy sewing!!💜
Question, being new to sewing, mine wants to bow. what did I do wrong?
Thank you
How do you find out what the finished size is?
Thanks for this tutorial! My first time quilting something and it was a fun learning experience! Have a lovely addition to my Thanksgiving table! :)
I am so glad to hear that Diana. That's what is great about sewing, trial and error but we almost always end up with something we love :)
Where can I buy the 60 degree ruler that you used
i was looking for the pattern for the christmas table topper?
Sorry Caroline, the “pattern” is the video. Hope it is easy enough for you to follow. Happy sewing!
@@TamarasJoyDIY I figured it out for the Christmas table topper, thanks 😊
Hey Tamara, Can you tell me what I am doing wrong. When I completed it the middle does not lay flat. It bucks. :)
I wish I could Lutisha, but without seeing your project and how to pieced it together no suggestions are coming to mind. Try giving it a good press in the center?
@@TamarasJoyDIY One more question, when I am sewing the rows t
ogether, should I do opposite sewing rows? Thanks for your suggestions.
Boa tarde lindo trabalho gostaria de saber o comprimento e largura em Português, por favor 🥺 obg.

I have made a better tutorial for this project if you want to check that out for better understanding: ruclips.net/video/zbMGx5Pecj8/видео.html
Belíssimo Hexágono 👏👏👏
I didn’t notice …do you have a written pattern?
Hi Karen, At this moment I am in the middle of writing one. When I finish it...hopefully in a few weeks I will post a link to it below the video.
Muy bonito, sería bueno que lo vayan traduciendo en español ,,soy de Argentina y no comprendo inglés.. Gracias
I wish I spoke Spanish! Hopefully the images help you figure it out. Happy Sewing!
How long are the strips..?
They are cut selvage to selvage. Assuming most fabrics are around 41 or 42” from selvage to selvage in cotton.
I guess i can use a jelly roll?? since they are precut to 2 1/2 in strips.
For sure! Just make sure the jelly roll strips are long enough. Anything 42" in length should work.
@@TamarasJoyDIY thanks! It worked! Got my 6 triangles!
Can you use fusible interfacing in place of batting?
For sure! Just depends on how thick you want your table topper. I like mine to have a low loft batting.
@@TamarasJoyDIY thank you! It's not very thick! Just thought I would use what I have. Love this pattern, it was sooo fast and easy! My daughter is going to love it!!!
Janine! I am glad it worked out! I agree, use what you have. Another reason why I reached for my low loft batting😃
Lindíssimo trabalho realmente.👍
Do you have a pattern for this please. I went to her Etsy shop and she seems to be all sold out.
since you did not bind the project why didn't you do the stitch and flip method? it would save all that folding in and pressing.
Particularly given the 60 degree angle
i guess i missed it but how long are the strips
