i hope Australia will keep the monarchy. it's such a nice thing for Canada, Australia, New Zealand and the UK to have in common. All brothers and sisters and examples that countries can be a monarchies but also the most free, democratic countries in the world.
I cannot understand for the life of me why sharing a head of state with three other nations doesn't make it easier to travel to them. let's change that!!!!!!

Except under the Constitution of Australia, she is an Australian. Politically, when referencing HM The Queen in regards to Australia, she is called HM The Queen of Australia, NOT HM The Queen of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. She is just as much an Australian as you or I, and yes, I am in fact Australian, I've just had this username for years.

In a world of change and turmoil the monarchy represents continuity and tradition. Once it is gone it is nearly impossible to get it back. God Bless the Queen of Australia and may her descendents reign in perpetuity.

I dread the day that The Queen passes away, she has dedicated herself to all the Commonwealth. Many anti-monarchists or republicans that want their country as a republic, such as Australia, who very strongly supports this already, waits for Her Majesty to die or abdicate before making their country a republic. I hope that many realms of the Commonwealth decide to keep Charles or William as their new head of state.

I've heard that because of the requirements needed by the Canadian government to remove the monarchy that it would be, practically speaking, impossible.
The best bit of Australia being a Monarchy is the total political independence of the head of state, and that another country pays for them! Who could ask for a better system? Australia is indeed the lucky country! And history is literally priceless. You can't just buy a monarchy. There are plenty of countries that would kill to have a monarchy like Australia has now!

it would be a mistake to throw away this tradition. God save the Queen and keep the Monarchy safe. I pray that her Majesty will live past 100 years. Yes in America we became a republic and it was not such an easy thing, our Civil war killed 2 percent of the population. A constitutional King or Queen might have made things better. I guess if the revolution happened today I might have became Canadian .

St Vincent and the Grenadines had a referendum in 2009 and voted to keep the monarchy, while the Tuvaluans have done so twice!

All pictures of the queen are genuine. I do not have any high definition videos with Diana. The flags are also correct, they are Royal flags of the States - Not civilian state flags. The NT does have a Royal flag.

@curt : You're correct of course. Strictly speaking there hasn't been a Queen (or King) "of England" since the union of England with Scotland in 1707. But, like it or not, many people around the world (especially those outside of the Queen's dominions) persist in referring to her as "the Queen of England".

Scotts here, I never knew the queen of Austraila was a diffrent position then the Queen on England, Scotland etc.
So when you say Queen of Austraila you do not recognise her as the Queen of the UK. I think thats a very proud and right way to view her.

She has no power over the politicians, she does not rule, she is not our 'leader'; The Queen 'reigns over us' she is the Head of State, is symbolic and traditional. The ruler and leader would be the PM who is elected by the people.

@shanodude God save the queen isnt just a british national anthem, it's also the anthem of the commonwealth realms which australia is a part of. And the union jack on the aussie flag just represents australia's heritage seeing that australia was a former british colony.
That's right, It's exactly what I meant. Advanced Australia Fair is more representative these days. In the early 80s there were four anthems: God Save the Queen, Song of Australia, Waltzing Matilda and Advanced Australia Fair. Through referendum Advance Australia Fair was chosen. However, you can still play God Save the Queen and the world won't fall apart.

It is not the Union Jack. The Union Jack is a naval flag. Otherwise it is simply the Union flag.

With the exception of the Australian flags, all the ones I have shown. They are not the State flags but the flags of the Governors of each State.

The Crown has given us in the Commonwealth so much stability a first class system of governance and of Justice. To degrade the Throne is just not the Aussie way to our best interests nor the certainty for the childrens future quality of life. Long may our Queen reign over my native homeland of Australia.
@youvegotmoobs: This is not the *national* anthem of Australia. It is the *royal* anthem of Australia. There's a difference. The national anthem is Advance Australia Fair. The royal anthem is God Save the Queen.

If you want a "Republic" why don't you live in one abroad for a while and learn how bad that is. Besides, the monarchy reigns, does not rule - we are far more independent than those "independent" banana republics around the world.

@paolocabling Australia is not a colony. In 1901 the colonies making up Australia and Tasmania federated in the Commonwealth of Australia. Independent from 3 Sept 1939 (pedants, please ignore 1942 and 1986).
the person who makes the choices is the PM and we elect the PM. the Queen nor the Governor General do nothing but sign the papers and swear in the PM and other random things. I don't think we're missing out.
The same as I pay health insurace, I don't want to pay it, but the piece of mind that if something does go wrong I am willing to pay it.
umm the Queen is the head of state, the Governor General is her representative in Australia who plays all the roles of the Queen, technically and in practice the GG is the head of state as she gives royal assent to bills and does all other roles of the Queen. Read any Legal textbook.
@Chavezoid : Yes they do. The Queen's official title is defined by a separate law in each of her realms. The Australian Parliament has enacted a law stating what her official title is in Australia, as has the Parliament of each of the other Commonwealth realms (countries of which the Queen is head of state) in respect of the that particular territory. If you're interested search "List of titles and honours of Queen Elizabeth II" in wikipedia.

Yes I am with you. It's the Commonwealth anthem and can be played during those events. Australia is a member of the British Commonwealth anyway. Only labour people do not like it, but groups like the RSL most probably still play it in Australia and NZ. Anyway, I will soon be making Advance Australia Fair with all the other flags. In the meanwhile you can watch "ABC-TV station sign-off & Nat. Anthem" from my channel.

In terms of this so called civil waste, it only amounts to about $1.63 per capita per year (or 1 pound in sterling) for each country, and they bring in millions in tourism, most of which is used towards important charities. So in fact, they make more money than they require. It's wrong to say they don't earn or deserve, since at least Her Majesty has dedicated her life to service through charities, diplomacy, and promoting human rights and democracy.

You obviously don't understand the constitutional monarchy system, nor the royal family. Well, yes, historically there was a degree of inbreeding, but only slightly more so than was common among the general population (people didn't move very often, and populations were small). They are neither racist nor bigotted, and the whole idea of the Coronation oath, is that the monarch swears to serve the people, so no, we are not here to serve her, she is here to serve us.

Australia is a Constitutional Monarchy. We have our own Constitution protecting our own rights and full independence. We happen to just be a member of the Commonwealth - of which the Queen is the head of state.
i only wish that english people showed as much pride for our Queen as my australian cousins are doing here, god save the Queen and god save Australia!

Not all republics have the President acting as both Head of State and head of the Government - some have a Prime Minister as well
but we already do, the Governor General they are Australian.
If we had to elect our head of state we would have to choose someone who is unbiased and won't just remove a PM because they don't agree with their policies, or would remove a PM that was doing illegal things. Australia is running smoothly and finely as it is, as a Constitutinal Monarchy, why would we waste billions of dollars just to change a ceremonial role?
