- Canadian pride celebrations: You show up, have a Bud Light, listen to some 90s-era house music and see rainbow floats commissioned by major financial institutions. There’s never previously been any controversy about such celebrations being mandatory. Until the school system got involved.

Forcing straight people to participate in Pride Celebrations is as stupid as forcing Atheists to attend Good Friday church services or forcing men to attend the Women's March. Not wanting to participate in a celebration doesn't mean you are planning to bully or murder the people who are being celebrated. I'm having a birthday party tomorrow. Everyone is invited! In fact, you must attend or else I will call you names and demand your exclusion from society. I love my birthday so much that I am extending it for the entire month and asking schools to teach it as part of the curriculum. Make sure to attend my birthday parade whether you want to or not because it's mandated in the workplace. This is absolutely a normal request.

When I was in school in the mid 00s they kept trying to use us in various fundraisers which I was never really a fan of. I remember one fundraiser was to pay for the education of some 8 year old kid in India with a dream to become a doctor. It was never clear why that kid got to win the lottery over the millions of other Indian kids, or what made my school so sure he'd still have the same dream when he was 18. But man was the principal virtue signaling a lot over the whole thing...

The difference there is that it's a school, and schools are allowed to have mandatory assemblies. You can't "force" an adult to go to church, but as long as your kid attends public school the school is allowed to make rules that they must follow. If you have a problem with mandatory assemblies in general then that's fine, but I see no point in policing what KINDS of assemblies are allowed.

1. I mean I was shown a sex ed video in 5th grade (i.e. age 11, right around when puberty begins). I know that's not the same thing, but it's not as far out there as you'd think.
2. Comparing that to telling kids "Hey, gay people exist and that's really cool!" is a clear false equivalency. Obviously we can't just show the kids ANYTHING, but "gay pride" is well within the acceptable bounds. Remember, the only people involved were the teachers, the students themselves, and in some cases an outside presenter dressed in costume (in this case, a drag queen). So long as the outside presenter is vetted first (which they obviously would be) then it's basically impossible for anything inappropriate to happen. All completely child-friendly.

If a parent is failing their child, the state has a responsibility to interfere. In much the same way, our society has a responsibility to elevate and care for all children, regardless of the parents.
If, as some edge case example, a parent were to insist their child be unable to read, or that their child must be taught that the earth is flat or science is the devil's work, then it is the role of all of society to prove otherwise and give that child an opportunity to exercise their rights and thrive, despite their parents.
People need to stop being apathetic and fight for their rights, as a decent human being.
