Growing up in Sydney I must admit to not knowing much about Victorian steam but after watching this its all going to change, this in my opinion is one of the best films I have seen...
Awesome video Matt, Well done! Having travelled on the footplate both as passenger and service crew many times to Warrnambool, Echuca and Ballarat in the WCR days it bought back a few memories. Cheers..
Outstanding Matt. The on-board camera is a unique and innovative way of capturing the sensation of the R class at speed. I think the background white noise is probably turbo-generator whine, and if you do another on-board film, and if the engine is running in daylight and assisting, try and get that turned off for a while. Anyone that has ridden aboard or behind an R at speed will recognise the way 761's tender is dancing around. Just a fantastic bit of film. Really gives you the atmosphere of being there.
Heh, I surmised the sound quality from a GoPro would be bad, but I didn't expect it to be pelted by soot from the leading locos :P Excellent footage as always bud; perhaps I may look into investing in a GoPro for myself. Cheers

The opening scene isn't a great opening. I see graffiti isn't limited to the US! 2:38 would have been a better opening scene! But what the heck, great video! Good to see that Australia is not all sand and rocks! Do you still have to stop the train to ,pen the gate that keeps the rabbits out? When I was a much younger lad, I saw a video where the train stopped and they opened the gate because there were thousands of rabbits! I don't hear much about that these days! Three steam engines to pull eleven cars? Nice video! I really like the camera on the top of the engine footage!
Quite a trio of ladies, and could those gals move! Must have been doing close to 130 kph! And absolutely fantastic shots. Not always easy to coordinate 3 steamers even if all the same class. And with those smoke deflectors, they almost had a Germanic look.
Lovely video. :) I'd suggest, if possible, that you used a better mic next time. The sound doesn't really measure up to the visual impresssion. Still, very impressive, thanks for the upload.
yes. steam has always been king when it comes to tractive effort. the only reason steam died was because diesel was easier to maintain, cheaper to operate.
Question, I know a single crew can operate several diesels in a consist. What about steam engines? Someone has to manage the boilers in each unit. What about breaking a throttle, a far different animal than diesels.
As a ex steam fireman/driver in the UK, I really enjoyed your great video, thanks.
Thanks for the Memories....Matt Excellent work indeed...

I remember watching them pass Dysart on the return. All 3 blew their whistles
Goosebumps at 3:30!
Thank goodness for 2:40, the sight of steam locos working backwards is an insult to them.

Wow..Awesome Man..
you mean ot tell me an almost 200 year old technology can easily pull modern heavy loads with ease?

Vera interesting
so if 1 locomotive is operating at a lower power than the other, is it's piston moving at the higher speed?
