Shot my best ever, an 84 (par 71), this weekend. Down to a 16.6, best handicap yet. Shot 40 on the back. I've shot 39 on the front before, so now I just have to put those two together.
This advice - dispersion and aim - has really helped. Need to work on my lag putting and I'll be there. Too many three putts from 50-60 feet. I'm working hard on GIOTG. I know what to work on. Thanks Matty Boom Boom.

PIcking the game up after many years off. A month ago my goal was to break 100. I am now trying to break 80. Your videos are extremely helpful.
I had a decent swing to work with, but eliminating the hero shots, instead hitting the shots that i CAN hit has been a game changer. I am now regularly playing an entire round without losing a single ball, and my scores are so much better.

    Golf Sidekick,
You were exactly correct about shaft flex & dispersion.
They fitted me with Regular Flex & ive been right, left, & all over the greens. Today i took my 7 iron to the pga super store and its true.
Switchi g to the stiff shaft shrunk my dispersion by half, the green was covered with balls.
All consistently around the flag and grouped on the green much better than my regular flex iron.
Thank you Golf Sidekick. Youre the man. 79 last week then 84.
This week i feel much more confident that ill be at the flag instead of off right or left pin high all day as usual.

Brother I wish I could give you a hug. I'm just starting my thirdmonth of golfing and I'm having an absolute blast on the course. I've watched all the breaking certain score barrier videos and while I don't have the skill to execute certain topics (yet!), it's great to learn about how the talented golfers think. Thank you so much for your long-form content; you've taught me how to be analytical while playing! I was always an athlete growing up and through uni- but after I left, there really weren't any adult leagues in my primary sport. Now golf is filling the gap. You're absolutely right, the best part of golf is making new friends. I've already met some great people at local courses and I've been able to utilize golf as a tool to rekindle relationships with old friends. Golf has become a tremendous stress relief as well as an avenue to express my competitiveness- competing against myself. This game has already been incredibly life enriching, and the idea that I'll be able to enjoy it for the next 40 years makes me giddy. Cheers!!!

I broke 80 for 1st time last week. I was really helped by great putting on that day. The other thing helping (besides your wise words) is the realization that golf is about consistency, not distance. Rather than go 100% on an 8 iron and hit it 145 yards (I know I'm not long), I'm better off with an easy 7 iron. Because when I go 100% on an 8 iron (or whatever club), I am much more prone to spraying the ball or duffing it. When I go 70 to 80% on a 7 iron instead, it is much more consistent.

I had kids a few years ago and my golf became super irregular like 4-5 rounds a year the last few years. I shoot 80-85 super consistently as opposed to having painful mental struggle when I was playing a lot overthinking and tinkering with high expectations. There is something to be said about Matt’s view on enjoying yourself and playing the shots you KNOW you can hit even if it means letting the cool kids hit their drivers every hole while you rock the 4 iron

@@GolfSidekick Hi Matt. Playing partners always count them up halfway round. Which isn’t ideal. But being 13 handicap I kinda know where I’m up to in the back of my mind anyway. Eg weekend I was 4 over going into the 9th. 2 bogies. One double. So I knew I was on for a 39. (Shanked it out of bounds on the 9th) I think higher handicap players can easily ignore the score because there’s more shots to count. I think I just need to use the thinking box a bit longer to stay in the zone. Thanks for all your content. It’s got me to where I am now. 80 is next. But Breaking 80 is way harder than 90! I’ll get there. 🤞🏼

Thank you so much, I have been struggling to break 90 some rounds. Took this attitude with another video of going for bogeys. And wow, first round out and shot an 81.. strictly by following your idea of no hero shots and a mindset of okay how do I advance the ball this time. It's important to remember as we set reasonable expectations for ourselves. Having said that, if I am fortunate enough to continue to have the time to practice & play at my current pace, 2023 will be the year that I finally break 80 and improve my overall average! @@GolfSidekick UPDATE:
I finally did it Mr Golf Swami Sidekick! After putting in a fair amount of work the past couple of years, I shot a 78 last week! 🎉🍻🎉
I kept the concept of dispersion & aim point in mind, along with shot visualization. I also really made a conscious effort to slow
my downswing down -- to the point of almost swinging as easy as I possibly could with my irons. Measured/consistent breathing
also played a huge role I believe, because I shot an even-par 36 on the front nine (shattering my best!), and then proceeded
to bogey 10, 11 & 12 on the back! I kept my shirt on though (measured breathing and positive thoughts) and birdied the number
one handicap 13th hole! (a first!) The back nine was a scramble indeed (which included a double), but I did my best to stay positive and
finished with a birdie on the 18th for a 42 on the back (which is closer to my average).
Regarding your thoughts on having the proper equipment: I coincidentally broke-in a used Vokey 62* M-Grind Wedge with an
8* bounce -- which I believe was dearly needed because I was struggling with tight lies around the greens. It replaced a clunker
60*/12* which was making tight lies even more challenging. Practicing short game 3:1 vs range work was also vital in finally scoring
      in the 70's I reckon!
I will remember that golf is indeed a journey, as I continue to strive towards improving my average, while enjoying my time
      on the course!
Muchas gracias good Sir for sending out the positive Mojo!

I managed a 78 a couple of weeks ago with an OB triple on the 16th (The dreaded hook from nowhere- par 3 even)
No special strategy was involved; just hitting good shots instead of duffs.
I will say that, after the 16th, I did my Marty impression- complete with accent- and kept calm to par the final two, even though I dislike both holes.
But it was really no more complicated that hitting the ball straight.
I wish I had a 175 iron shot, but, alas, that's a 5-7 wood for me, or maybe 4h with a trail wind.

I have a Regular flex driver (hi loft 13 degree driver, jetspeed taylormade)
And i hit is 225-240 consistently (total carry)
In all honesty i assume i should stick to regular shaft and not go stiff? Ive always felt i have a slow swing speed but my buddy keeps saying getting stiff shafts will get me to play better?. I hook/draw drives like crazy. Never slice.
    Couple other club averages
    3 hybrid - 200 yard
    6iron - 165 yard
Is this Regular shaft swing speed distances or stiff shaft?

I am very confident that I am capable of shooting < 80 more often. My problem is that I just have random BIG misses that blow up the hole (occasionally el hosel, random chunk, random skull, random top). It happens with all of my clubs. I have a bimodal thing going on where 70% of my shots are good and follow a normal dispersion and 30% just go anywhere. My pro has seen my swing and couldn't understand why I am shooting high 80s. We played a round and it's not strategy or process. He said I just look tense on the course and my swing relies too much on timing. So, we are working on a mechanic change that relies less on timing. I'm also working on breathing to relieve some tension.

@@GolfSidekick I haven't, but I do seem to play a little better when playing partners have music. Analytical brain needs to turn off. Getting a good buzz helps, but it's not sustainable for 4-5 hours without other bad side effects.

I do have 2 sets of irons.
On firm days I play my cavity backs probably should get a set of player distance but that’s my firm day clubs because they aren’t as bulky. On the wet softer days I play king cobra transition s hybrid irons my favorite clubs they were made in 2007.
I will say I have a club that I know I can carry 200+ and that’s my 5 wood idk what it is with that club but 200-230 I can feel it and swing according and a club that I know I can carry 175 that’s my 7 iron. Idc if it’s on the green that’s not my concern, if I’m pulling either one of those it’s a club to get me to where I can get up and down.
Really 150 in is the only time I’m thinking I’m going strictly for the green usually not hitting it at a high clip unless it’s a par 3 but that’s ok.
    I’m a 5.3 handicap.
That mixed with putting distance control has been the main 3 things that’s changed in my game. Used to be kind of guy that hit a 30 foot putt 10-15 feet (or further) past the hole and would 3-4 putt. Would be insane would be on a 420 yard par 4 hit the ball within pw range get the ball on and absolutely lose myself for a 6-7 because I just hit the ball

I played golf with a 2 handicapper on Saturday. His best shots were honestly not much if any better than mine, but he always chose the right shots. The highlight of the whole round was on a 535m par 5 his drive went off into the trees left. His next shot was just a simple punch out. Then he laid up to get to the green in 4 total shots, he then made a putt from about 3m which is about 10ft. But even if he had missed that he would have had bogie at worst on one of the hardest holes on the course after a shit tee shot.

Let's face it, golf very much favors long hitters. Due to advancing age I am shorter with all my clubs than a few years ago. To help compensate I have moved up a tee box to keep things managable. Even from the closer tees several holes are bogey holes because they are simply still too long for me or because there is an obstacle exactly where I would fade my driver, or there is serious trouble either in front of or just to the right of the green (and it is always to the right). Therefore, I often hit 5 wood or 5 hybrid off the tee and have to lay up on some holes that would otherwise be reachable in regulation. Hitting heroic (stupid) shots on these holes leads to triple bogeys. So I avoid such shots and get the ball back in play. When I practice it is mainly putting, chippig and pitching. I have improved greatly in these areas but not enough to offset my lack of distance. This means that I have to be very accurate on the par 3's and the few reachable 4' and 5's. Every year I shoot 82 a few times and every blue moon an 81. But I have yet to crack 80.

    • @GolfSidekick

To hell with besting 80. Shining at the local Fat-Shot Tourney matters more than chasing something that ain't gonna happen. Crispy shots with a proper stroke incur a penalty; moving the ball requires what comes natural -- hitting the ball fat, laying sod over the ball. It is difficult to embrace one's personal ineptitude but to win at shi^^y golf that's what is demanded.

    1. Don't lose the ball. 2. Don't 3 putt. 3. Don't miss the green with a wedge. Do this, and get reasonable distance control on full shots, and double bogeys simply don't exist.
