  • Zooming modestly deep into the Mandelbrot set, I ran into an image that wasn't too remarkable on its own. But the randomly generated color palette it came with reminded me of a frozen waterfall.
So I dusted off my heightfield renderer, and kept tweaking and massaging the raw iteration data until this mountain emerged with pleasing slopes.
Another nice surprise are the insights into some of the ravines, caused randomly by the edges of the underlying Mandelbrot image, which just so happen to dice the landscape in interesting places.

Which software are you using for this animation? Looks great

This was rendered with selfmade programs that have no real user interface. Elevation data comes from a Mandelbrot fractal generator. This is fed into a height field renderer, which then uses (simple) raytracing to arrive at a nicely illuminated picture.
