I love Michael and I love Vsauce but after reading the comments, seeing Bill's map, and reading his explanations of the gridlines and just the sheer amount of effort and forethought that went into his map, I'm off to buy his version. It is a thing of beauty and a work of art! I feel bad for Bill since Michael and team did not give him credit but at least watching this video lead me to finding something worth purchasing.
I used to respect them until they started mind field and curiosity box . It appears that money is more important for them than sharing interesting ideas and knowledge. I think they stopped posting in main channel to promote mind field. And look how he tease us in what inside the box which cost much for lot of viewers. He went that low to advertise the box.
Dude This poster is raising money for Alzhiemers research, Mind field allows him to do larger scale projects, and the curiosity box is a nice little gift for kids, i don't get why any of this is a bad thing. People have similar ideas all the time, they don't have to be ripping eachother off.

The curiosity box isn't even a good box, it's mostly filled with random items that have no relevancy or anything to play with. Mind field is just arm-chair psychology show. And charity doesn't work, the money usually goes into the revue than the research itself.

Everytime I googled questions about what the Mandelbrot Set is all about, I always find "well if you just understood advanced math like me, you would know." I appreciate Michael for taking the time to educate without being condescending.

So yeah, other than the huge obvious typo, the made-up grid lines, and the fact that he totally copied my idea without giving even the slightest hint of a shout-out, it does actually look pretty decent I'll give it that.
@@spart169 well duh, and I didn't invent vintage maps either. But I was the first to put the two together. It's quite a simple concept, and a common reaction is "why didn't I think of that?" Some might be tempted to pretend like they actually did think of it. The fact remains that as a designer, the first thing you ever do is to look for reference images. If I was hired by VSauce to make a map of the Mandelbrot set I would surely look for that on Google, and it's IMPOSSIBLE for them to have missed mine - because of how well the Kickstarter did it's been at the top of Google for years. So even IF they uniquely conceived of the idea, there is NO WAY that they didn't find mine while still in the beginning stages of theirs. I was careful in my Kickstarter to include a section of shout-outs, because that is the respectful thing to do as a creator. That's literally all that VSauce had to do, is shout me out as the inspiration (although I would have much preferred that he contacted me to license the image)

I always check the comments on these videos...because I know that in the first 5, somebody will repeat that Michael has obviously lost his Vsauce password.
You might want to fire the team member who ripped off Bill Tavis' work and even managed to misspell 'cardioid'. I doubt it was you, Michael, who was responsible for the creation of the poster, so no hard feelings towards you, but credit should be given to the original creator. EDIT: Unless the map was created without any other inspiration and through a series of incredible coincidences somehow manages to look like a bootleg of Tavis' map.
As others (including Bill) have pointed out, DONG's asthetic choice to include orthogonal lines as waves in the water is mathematically inaccurate (for which read: the DONG version seemingly just makes up where the lines go, rather than bothering to do any calculations, rendering them decidly not orthogonal), which probably makes it less likely to have been a series of incredible coincidences.
@@patrick_on_here9914 well, it was my original idea to put those two concepts together, and my poster has sold thousands of copies to nearly 50 countries and has ranked at the top of google ever since I launched it with a highly successful Kickstarter in 2016. It's arguably one of the most successful Mandebrot posters ever. There's no way they made theirs without seeing mine. The concept is not exclusively mine but if they wanted to do the same, they could have distanced themselves more. Look up "vintage maps" on google images and you'll see that light blue water / tan land is not the only color scheme to choose from. But it's not just the fact that they obviously and lazily took their aesthetic cues from my map. They also copied mathematical elements, but without the proper understanding to execute them. Case in point: my map has a grid in the water, formed by external angle rays and equipotential lines. This grid was very difficult to compute and draw, requiring advanced techniques in both vector and raster graphics, and so when they decided to copy the idea of the grid in the water, they just made theirs up. Yup, they put a grid in the exact style and location as mine, but it has no mathematical relevance. It's impossible that they computed it without seeing mine, because they didn't compute it! The true grid is always orthogonal, while theirs has many places where it crosses at obvious diagonals. That's absolute proof that they copied me and that they don't actually care about educating people and the latter is the the thing that gets me more upset. If they can't improve on what I've done, why make something worse and then pretend that it's their own idea? So scummy. They didn't even get the Imaginary Axis in the right place.

@@Madmagicanman1 they also totally made up the equipotential lines and external rays that make up the grid in the water... they only put them in there because they look so good on my original Mandelmap poster, except that I actually solved for them and drew them correctly! So yeah, other than the huge obvious typo, the made-up grid lines, and the fact that he totally copied my idea without giving even the slightest hint of a shout-out, it does actually look pretty decent I'll give it that.

@@spart169 well duh, and I didn't invent vintage maps either. But I was the first to put the two together. It's quite a simple concept, and a common reaction is "why didn't I think of that?" Some might be tempted to pretend like they actually did think of it. The fact remains that as a designer, the first thing you ever do is to look for reference images. If I was hired by VSauce to make a map of the Mandelbrot set I would surely look for that on Google, and it's IMPOSSIBLE for them to have missed mine - because of how well the Kickstarter did it's been at the top of Google for years. So even IF they uniquely conceived of the idea, there is NO WAY that they didn't find mine while still in the beginning stages of theirs. I was careful in my Kickstarter to include a section of shout-outs, because that is the respectful thing to do as a creator. That's literally all that VSauce had to do, is shout me out as the inspiration (although I would have much preferred that he contacted me to license the image)

I always check the comments on these videos...because I know that in the first 5, somebody will repeat that Michael has obviously lost his Vsauce password.
You might want to fire the team member who ripped off Bill Tavis' work and even managed to misspell 'cardioid'. I doubt it was you, Michael, who was responsible for the creation of the poster, so no hard feelings towards you, but credit should be given to the original creator.
EDIT: Unless the map was created without any other inspiration and through a series of incredible coincidences somehow manages to look like a bootleg of Tavis' map.
As others (including Bill) have pointed out, DONG's asthetic choice to include orthogonal lines as waves in the water is mathematically inaccurate (for which read: the DONG version seemingly just makes up where the lines go, rather than bothering to do any calculations, rendering them decidly not orthogonal), which probably makes it less likely to have been a series of incredible coincidences.
How is it not a single, simple coincidence? Neither Bill Tavis nor Vsauce Michael Here’s team invented either cartography or the Mandelbrot set.
@@patrick_on_here9914 well, it was my original idea to put those two concepts together, and my poster has sold thousands of copies to nearly 50 countries and has ranked at the top of google ever since I launched it with a highly successful Kickstarter in 2016. It's arguably one of the most successful Mandebrot posters ever. There's no way they made theirs without seeing mine. The concept is not exclusively mine but if they wanted to do the same, they could have distanced themselves more. Look up "vintage maps" on google images and you'll see that light blue water / tan land is not the only color scheme to choose from. But it's not just the fact that they obviously and lazily took their aesthetic cues from my map. They also copied mathematical elements, but without the proper understanding to execute them. Case in point: my map has a grid in the water, formed by external angle rays and equipotential lines. This grid was very difficult to compute and draw, requiring advanced techniques in both vector and raster graphics, and so when they decided to copy the idea of the grid in the water, they just made theirs up. Yup, they put a grid in the exact style and location as mine, but it has no mathematical relevance. It's impossible that they computed it without seeing mine, because they didn't compute it! The true grid is always orthogonal, while theirs has many places where it crosses at obvious diagonals. That's absolute proof that they copied me and that they don't actually care about educating people and the latter is the the thing that gets me more upset. If they can't improve on what I've done, why make something worse and then pretend that it's their own idea? So scummy. They didn't even get the Imaginary Axis in the right place.

Your allusion to needing a gun is quite apt - it's a great metaphor for his bully-like approach which is actually anti-capitalist. Like most cheaters who try to play the game unfairly, it's not even effective economically in the long term. My sales skyrocketed as a result of this video being released, while these fools are banned from ever making their crappy poster ever again.
