As an ex OTR'r Itw was nice to seethat the private owners trend toward the better tractors, your WS is a cadilllac, a few nice KW's too and some classic Peterbuilts, very few cheaper international and frieghtshakers. Are most the Allison automatic or are ther any die hards that either run a super 10 or 18 speed. How many states allow for the second trailer, and is like pulling doubles or a 48 and a pup? Been stuck in a wheelchair this last year with back injury but about to but a short class C and have my old Land Rover that I will tow.
Hey Nautigrin! Most of the HDT RV haulers are Volvos...so they've got the iShift tranny in them. Our Western Star has the DT-12 automated which is really nice. The older Petes are running 18 speed manuals. Most states west of the Mississippi allow double tows except WA and OR. We haven't ventured out east pulling doubles and not sure we want to try. No, we're not from the Treasure Valley. We're originally from Spokane and have been full time RVing for over 2 years. Too bad you missed the rally...it was great! Thinking about a MDT in order to have 4 wheel drive and better ground clearance , any thought as to why not?
Our thought is that we either stay out of bad road conditions or stay put until the weather gets better. That's the only time we really need 4-wheel drive. As far as ground clearance - we don't want to take our 5th wheel into places that would require higher ground clearance, so it's not a factor for us. To be honest....we've never seen a MDT with 4-wheel drive, but they might be out there. Just our thoughts....good luck in your research Scott!

Those are some awesome looking HDTs! Tiffany said that if we ever decide to switch to a 5th wheel from a Class A then we have to get an HDT. Safe travels!

You folks really do a great job of getting a bit of everything in your video. Please, let it be known that you don't need a big rig to come. There's lots of people coming to the rally with little rigs, I came with my tent trailer in the beginning and nobody laughed at me. Just the people here are worth coming to see. Jim and Kelly are the BEST.

I know were there's a 2010 pro star, around a mil. Miles for 12,500.00. Great trucks several to choose from.
If all of yall that has a Smart car took them to the front and parked them side by side i bet people would stop and try to buy them thinking it was a full dealership.

Hi Kellie I make a good Chicken noodle and dumpling soup with veggie's, when I make it, it last's for 4 or 5 day's so I don't have too cook and clean dishes every day, LOL , it's been a little HOT !!! here for it 90's and 100's in Apple Valley, Ca

There were some really nice trucks there and it's always fun to see and show them off. So far we've got around 10 HDTs that say they'll be in Quartzsite....maybe a "Desert HDT" rally 😉. Stay safe and see you soon.

Does the blue rig that had the white suv pulled straight onto the back have a channel? I really like the thought of a bigger carry vehicle and that’s the first one I’ve seen.
No they don't Paul....there are only 4 HDT channels that we're aware of. The owner's of that rig are fairly active on the Facebook HDT sites. If you haven't seen those you can go to our RESOURCES page on our website and get the links to them. There are a few members on those sites that carry full size vehicles on their trucks.
At the HDT rally's whats the longest 5th wheel will those spots accommodate?
The sites at Ambassador RV Resort (where the West Coast Rally is) are 90+ feet long. They will fit any 5th wheel on the market today with plenty of room for even long wheelbase HDT's left over.

Why don't you show the more unusual thruks in depth. Saw four door hdt. What are they??
F-750 is one of them. About halfway through the video. They aren't Class 8. They're class 5 or 6, I think. Still plenty for about any sized RV. International makes one, too. I forgot its name, though.
Hi St Gal....there were so many great trucks at the rally we wanted to try and show them all. We try to keep the video under 30 minutes, so we decided to show the exteriors and beds with hitches. Sir Timothy is correct - there were two four door Freightliners that are a Class 5 or 6 truck. Most of us call them MDTs (Medium Duty Truck) and there are quite a few pulling RVs on the road. There was also a Class 5 Kodiak which is made by Chevrolet. As you can see there were a number of different type of trucks at this rally and if we tried to show more in-depth details we could have gone almost two hours! Have a great weekend!
@@SuiteTravels Our International in the video, the white 4 door with the dragon graphics on the side, is a MDT. Pulls fine (just not fast up hills), stops great. Would not go back to a light duty...ever. That truck is now sold and we're getting a Volvo. If you need 4 doors for the extra seating, then you are looking at MDT. However, lots have pulled the lower bunk and put in a bench seat. The Volvo we are looking at has a dinette table/seating (they call it a workstation). That works for extra passengers.
Thanks for all of the awesome videos you make. I really enjoy watching them and makes me want to get into the HDT realm. But I have questions. I don't have a CDL now, is a CDL for personal use different than a CDL for work? Is there any info that you can provide me?
You do not need CDL so long as the state your HDT is registered in as an RV (rather than Commercial Vehicle) allows you to operate it with a Non-CDL. For example, here in my state of California the state requires a Non-commercial Class A or B depending on weight & length of the RV.
Hi Jonathan. Thank you for the kind words....really means a lot to us. If the HDT is not used for commercial use, then a CDL is not required. As Tyler states, you must comply with your state of licensing requirements. As an example, we are licensed in South Dakota and there are no restrictions or special license requirements necessary to drive a private HDT for personal use. However, some states will require special "endorsements" such as air brakes, weight, etc.. It all depends on your state licensing requirements. Question with my fiver and my 1 ton Ram I accumulate a graveyard of bugs on my front cap. I noticed that your HDT has a higher fairing than your coach's cap. Does that minimize the bugs on the coach?
Since we started towing with the Western Star we haven't had any bugs on the front cap! That's another nice feature of an HDT 😂.

Yes Stephen....there were a number of attendees this year with regular pickups and two couples that came without an RV and stayed in a local hotel. Most of the HDT owners are willing to show their rigs and discuss why they built like they did. There's a lot of knowledge in one place that is priceless and a great group of folks 😉 . Hope you can make it to a rally....you won't be disappointed!
