This is one of those few moments where JR sheds his usual scheming, selfing demeanor and acts like a human being. This scene almost feels like Hagman slipped back into the Tony Nelson role for a few minutes.
Just like Jock handled the school problem with Lucy. I know for a fact that if Jock heard John Ross sass JR, Jock would’ve smacked his grandson right in the mouth. Jock was a firm but fair father with his sons, and he would’ve have been the same with his grandsons, especially his namesake.
Also JR should have said "You're lucky that you have at least one of your Parents with you, Cousin Lucy didn't have either growing up." Also, she went to School, and went to College and did well for herself who is now happily working in Europe. Also it was Aunt Pam who taught her how important it was to have an Education, she got everything to make up for her Parents not being around.
I remember the first time I skip school and my older brother who's raising me found out he gave me the worst ass whooping of my life he got that belt out and let my ass on fire and told me I was going to go to school and get an education and I sure did
Great scene between John Ross and Christopher then John Ross and J.R. And a good reference point when J.R. referred to those early years of Dallas when Lucy was cutting class.
What a great Moment for Father & Son, I so Miss Yesterday's TV, especially since it packed so much Heart & Soul unlike today's rubbish that can't even hold a candle for itself for today's viewers. I especially like the way John Ross and Christopher speak to each other, you can really feel the bond and energy in terms of how they communicated. It saddens me to know that this is something that is so rare in today's life for the young generation as they are reduced to all this cheap texting and and forms of communication that sadly have only created a far greater division than yesterday's times, SMH!
In order to run an Oil Company John Ross, you have to know Math & Science. I went to High School, and College and graduated from both with high marks. After my army work ended I went straight into the Offices of Ewing Oil and earned my keep and let me tell you something Grandpa Jock didn't give me any special treatment because I was his son. He was harder on me than any of his employees but I did it and so can you.
This was one of those rare moments where JR acted like an actual parent towards John Ross. He was angry and disappointed in his son’s behaviour and attitude, but he never shouted or raised a hand to him, but he did give him a good telling off. Jock would have given JR a lot worse then what John Ross would have got. John Ross was his only son and heir to the Ewing Fortune and would one day take over
The birth of John Ross was a very important part of the storyline of Dallas. It was important for JR to have a male heir and please Jock and give him his first grandson and namesake. Adding the James character was wrong and weak because he didn’t add anything to the series because the character didn’t have any history behind him and viewers really didn’t get attached to him like the original cast.
I like when JR confronted John Ross in the new series when JR found out that John Ross conspired with Cliff Barnes ! JR told him I forgive you son ! It’s better to forgive then feel my Rath !
Every American kid feels the same about school because it did suck. We never learned anything worth knowing...A bright high school valedictorian can do an algebra problem..But can he fix a broken glass and screen on a smartphone? She can write a good report on the life of Martin Luther King Jr..But can she install a motherboard and power box on a computer? Why can't they do these tasks? Aren't these things of more value to society than a math problem, a Wiki biography, or say learning Latin? Apparently our sorry dumbed down American academic school culture doesn't think so.
+Cole Tanner Learning Latin isn't so bad if you're going into medicine or law, but those are highly specialized professions. Algebra likewise if you're going to be an engineer, but not everybody can actually be one. I agree that our education does suck as you've described it.
And while you are fixing broken glass on iPhones and installing motherboards, who will have the skills to raise children, build houses and fix your plumbing?
You know, I was writing a rebuttal, but I decided its not worth it. Everybody who doesn't do well at school seems to rant about school being stupid or useless.. It's just rationalizing one's own failure. Because someone sucks AT Golf, doesn't make Golf ITSELF stupid. Because someone sucks AT academics, doesn't make academics THEMSELVES at to blame. That's too easy.

That was fantastic continuity from the early seasons (when Lucy was skipping school and Jock had this solution) to now JR having to do the same to JR3.
So you don't think you need to go to school to run my oil company, huh? You're wrong. You need to know both math so you can figure out the finances and science so you can figure out where to drill. And law, so you can learn how to use it to your advantage. My daddy taught your uncle Bobby a lesson I've known all my life, and I'm gonna teach it to you. "Nobody gives you power. Real power is something you take." Do you know the fastest way to get power? Knowledge. I passed high school and college with straight As. Then, I went to 'Nam where I learned the discipline needed to run a successful company and a successful life. John Ross, you're going to need knowledge and discipline in order to run this company some day. And you will run it, I'll make damn sure of it. You're going to go to college and get a degree. Then, when your schooling's done, I'll break your spirit and remold it so you can be the success I am, if not better. Am I clear?
Wow! John Ross, and Christopher almost ran off together. I didn't even know that their fathers didn't know that they were not even alive when they didn't see them, and everything.
I thought Christopher was Sue Ellen's sister and JR's child? (This goes waay back to second season?) Bobby walked into the house w. The child and Pam flipped and thought the child was one he found to adopt..
JR was more than a little bit of a bastard. But, he did have redeeming qualities. This scene shows one of those redeeming qualities. He loved his family despite all the shenanigans he engaged in with them and towards them at times
I assume that J.R. patched his relationship up with John Ross when he visited him in England in the years between this show and J.R. Returns. The TNT revival portrayed their relationship as rocky in the beginning. Of course, if that continuity followed the movies, I can assume that they would've still had a rough patch while J.R. was teaching him the business because he would've still been hard on him like Jock was in the past.
LBF522 Never cared about James or Michelle for that matter. They weren't needed. John Ross and Christopher should've more depth and promoted to main characters.
Amen to that. I have a feeling Jock did that to JR for sassing him so John Ross would have gotten a good back handed smack across his mouth if his granddaddy was there. One thing Jock never tolerated from any of his sons was sassing and I’m sure Jock would’ve enforced that golden rule with both John Ross and Christopher.
Product of divorce. He misses his Mom. His Dad is a busy oil business man. Why it was important to have Sue Ellen home with him. He was being raised by servants & ranch hens. Kids like the comfort of the Mom being around.
JR never resorted to slapping or shouting at his son. Just gave him a firm talking too. One of JR’s better moments.
This is one of those few moments where JR sheds his usual scheming, selfing demeanor and acts like a human being. This scene almost feels like Hagman slipped back into the Tony Nelson role for a few minutes.
John Ross became a bad ass in the new TNT Dallas series. I miss that show so much. I wish it had not been cancelled
Me too
Classic moment. Bet that young man STILL remembers that scene to this day! Good stuff.
JR handled it like a real dad.

JR loved being John Ross' daddy. JR was a good father to him.
The one and only time JR was ever seen getting angry and disciplining John Ross. Jock would've backhanded him for the back talk.
Jock sure would have!!!!!
Except John Ross had the power, because he could decide where he wanted to live. And he later used it
Brian Johnson

Brian Johnson he's disciplined John Ross before
This is the first and only time J.R. confronts his son, who failed to draw the line.

When John Ross was little he idolized his dad, I guess that all changed when he entered his teen years.
Teenagers are stupid, its an obnoxious age.
They think they know everything and have the world by the balls.
Not all teenagers
I think it changed once James came. He wasn't the only child anymore. Sibling jealousy
I was like that as a teenager. I thought I knew it all and I was cocky . We argued a lot. Once I moved out of the house we got along better than ever
I'm surprised J.R. didn't do what Jock would've done, when John Ross crossed the line, by back talking J.R.
Great scene between John Ross and Christopher then John Ross and J.R. And a good reference point when J.R. referred to those early years of Dallas when Lucy was cutting class.
Lucy, at least, had her Aunt Pam to show her how important her education was.
And to think years later John Ross grew up to be worse than J.R.
Not worse - he was nowhere near as good at being bad as JR. He was a slimey little rat. JR had class and style.
John Ross was getting bad as J.R. The new Dallas was getting real good. I hated when TNT cancelled it.
It brought a new meaning to the idiom "like father, like son".
For all his flaws, J.R. loved his family!
Sure did. Jr always believed in education even when John ross was littlev
