I love it when you go to new spots. Though let’s be real, I love all of your videos! I also love the way you say the word “Beautiful”. Great accent for sure! Between you and Nic’s Channel, I have loads of binge watching!!
8:43 Take a look down the nearest sewer cover between your property and the mains sewer...it looks like the cover off the rodding point of an interceptor trap...sometimes these are earthenware, sometimes terra cotta...
That round piece of pottery could be a weight lid for making sauerkraut. The cabbage was sliced, than stuffed into a big kind of pot made from pottery mixed with salt. On top it got a piece of fabric, mostly linnen and the weight lid goes on top of all with water or the juice from the cabbage.
Simon with regard to the fragment of perforated disc shaped pottery you found. I remember my mother scalding cream in a large pot when I was a lad and she used a ceramic disc with a spiral pattern on the side that faced down with a hole at the centre of the spiral to stop the liquid from boiling up all frothy, as milk does.
Hello Si, I'm new from Nics channel, and I've already subscribed and rang the bell. I live your mudlarking videos, I stay up way past my bedtime making sure I watch all of your videos. Always a thumbs up from me! Keep on mudlarking, ill keep watching! 😁
Brillant adventure finds that round thing wit handle looks like a plug for a cannon stop sea water getting down the barrel. No expert but wen cannons are plugged that's wat looks like to me. Great adventure look forward to nxt HH & GL👍☘🇮🇪
I'm guessing ur near some old pottery building. At 12:08 its my opinion the piece of ceramic with all the holes in it was used st the bottom of a kiln. What the greenware (As of yet unfired clay) was placed on in the kiln so the new piece would not stick to the kiln itself during firing.
Interesting finds, looking forward to part two. Your channel, along with Nicola white TL Art have been a source of inspiration. I just want to say thanks. I've recently bought a metal detector (not found much yet), and also been knee deep in mud and rivers this week. I pulled out some interesting old bottles. I love it. Thanks again.
Si-finds yes, a large jar/bottle embossed with Maltine, and tube tear catcher types. Bovril 1oz /4oz. LMS HOTELS, MARSTONS LTD large beer bottle. One that I think is referred to as a skyscraper shape and some small perfume types/apothecary. Hopefully I'll get to another spot I've wanted to get to this weekend. Cheers
Si, how did modern coins find their way to a remote location? Sincerely enjoy all your videos and your commentary. The brown rock does resemble petrified timber. Never heard of kiln furniture. Fascinating how your fingers match those from long ago.
I learned whilst on the kayak the currents are very strong, so I guess everything is pushed up on the foreshore that way, thrown in by people on bridges
Si-finds It did appear to be a fast current while you were in the river's middle. Could see several rip currents whirling around. It was exciting to see a Londonite in river kayak.
@4:53 - while we were all looking at the key... did you check out the slight glint of gold in line with the key and to the right a bit (just by the dry bit of the rounded brown rock). Just wondering what it was... probably nothing exciting... cheers - john
john paterson Thanks for watching John, I see it I think it's just a stone / shard of brick or something. If it's meant to be found - I'll find it next time. 😃
A bit late in line as you would of been told countessly I would imagine... But I'm keen on a little fossil hunting myself... Shephards crowns get the old ticker going for me lol ☺️(my secrets out!!) and yes I would say that is fossilised Wood...🤔👌👏
I often watch mudlarking videos mainly Si finds,Tide line art, Kit + caboodles, The Johnstons and Tom Burliegh. I notice so many awesome rocks and some mudlarkers actually pick them up as well. I believe you do have a piece of petrified wood so I hope you kept that rock! We all seem to have the same interest.
Just a cross-not a crucifix unless it portrays Christ on the cross. When you found the first 3 coins, I saw a fourth a bit further to the right. I would sure pick up and take a Tudor brick if I found one. I enjoy your on the moment narration and Nic does a really fine job with this part too. Chill Bill and NuggetNoggin are fun to listen to as well.
Love your videos, re watching favourite finds, where is part 2? I neeeeed to see what else you found. Is it here? Did I miss it? Patiently waiting mud lover. 😌
i saw one of them drain plugs in an old victorian man hole chamber it looked like it had been placed in the corner waiting to be used could of been used to plug the pipes whilst they were working on them
Here in the Midwest we all have cars so it's less unusual In case you're having a go at me ;) - Wipers are somewhat interchangeable. Usually they will come packed with adapters for all sorts of cars. This one looks pretty old, maybe Saxon even. :D Which reminds me... I need new wipers.
Si you ever had any accidents in kayak? I was out on River tyne years ago and i went over and the tides just pulled me all over and i went under 4 or 5 times. Id be gone if not a life jacket.. put me off going out in kayaks anymorev😢 thinking i might give it a go as many places i cant get to without one🤔🤔
Looks like petrified wood to me too; I think you nailed it. And I'm wondering if your pierced piece of pottery might be part of a cheese- or butter-mold, what with that weight you came up with-- was there a dairy nearby? The holes were put in such molds to allow the whey to be pressed out. Have to say, though, I really liked your pottery furniture! I've used exactly the same sort of stuff when firing pots, and it was neat to see similar emerging from the Thames.
geta second kayack or borrow one just for your finds or make a little floatie you be yur own tug tug boat...... I used to kayack in white water, do yu hav Air bag bloowies in your kayack??
Carters "pop" factory was in the village of Sawley near the town of Long eaton in Nottinghamshire . I lived in Sawley as a kid and used to nick the odd bottle of pop from the factory, so as a local carters pop expert i think i can date your stopper from the 1930s ?
Hi Rob. In the UK "it is illegal to carry a knife in public without good reason, unless it has a folding blade with a cutting edge 3 inches long or less". Also, I wasn't sure if this was a 'Lock Knife', and law in the UK is thus "Lock knives are not classed as folding knives and are illegal to carry in public without good reason. Lock knives: Have blades that can be locked and refolded only by pressing a button can include multi-tool knives - tools that also contain other devices such as a screwdriver or can opener." I thought this knife could have been a Lock Knife, so thought it best to leave it where it was...
the lid looks like for a cannon to keep out the weather. I've seen them here in the states. The brown and golden rock is petrified wood, Nice find. I love the little finds, like the cannon and I believe a hat medal/badge. I would love to paddle the river. And the key could be to the Tower!! who knows.
Couldn’t find part 2...

That first find looks like the rising sun, the Australian military badge.
Kim Wallace it defiantly is a rising sun hat badge!! Worn by the Australian Army
Yep, Australian military hat/cap badge was my first thought as well.

Very nice - now PartII!! 👍😉
Your fired clay lid is a drain/ pipe bung ,it goes under iron pavement cover to stop stones etc getting into drainage system 👍
8:52 I live in Southern New Mexico and this looks like a lid to a tortilla warmer! LOL
Ooh what a cliffhanger, can't wait for part two :)

I love treasure hunting and you have great finds there on the Thames. Love your videos
Daryl Wendy Strauss Thank you!!!!!
The rock around 9:00 is petrified wood most certainly. Beautiful color!
Great thanks!!!
Cracking video 👍. Looking forward to part 2 ! The pottery with the small holes in looks like a plate from a Victorian water filter .
you can't stop there !! I want part 2 ! how exciting to get on new ground, can't wait to see what else you find :)
Simon with regard to the fragment of perforated disc shaped pottery you found.

Definitely petrified wood that has been smoothed by the water action. You find some very interesting stuff :) Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Lynda, good to know!
Roll on part 2 Si I was enjoying that
Alex🏴👍🏻
Thanks Al!
That red rock you picked up reminded me of photos of Ayers Rock in Australia.
It definitely looks like petrified wood to me. I've seen plenty of petrified wood from Wyoming.
Sandy Sanders bet it would look good sliced!
agreed it is pet wood. I am envious of all the flint! lol

That's great where abouts? In England?
Si-finds Hi, I'm in North Wales. The water levels are so low everywhere, makes areas a bit more accessible.
John Molloy fantastic. What sort of bottles? Anything pre-screw top?

Sounds fantastic, Good luck and happy hunting!
Lol, kayak nearly went without you there Si !!
Si that definitely looks like petrified wood good luck in your hunting
10:08 It might not be something fancy, but I find it oddly interesting, someones fingers impressions locked away in a piece of scrap clay
Yes it’s a motion captured in time
Looks like a heavy lid off an old pickle or sauerkraut keg used for curing.
Great finds. It must be difficult to keep your wit so dry kayaking on the Thames.
The heavy top ceramic could be for a crock to hold down cabbage for pickling

I know a little late but, at 11:56 what you have is a roman era (possibly) cheese grinder, Saw on " Time Team"
When you found the bent pipe part, there was also a ring in the frame 😉

The "Lid" looks like a plug for a small cannon
XtremeBudgetMusician It does!
XtremeBudgetMusician but wouldn't a plug for a cannon be made out of iron not pottery?
@@rodden1953 gotta keep the rain out
Simon ~ Should the holes go completely through the sherd, it might have been from a leech pot; quite common c. 1890.
A levigator , used to ground down lime stone in lithography , now they are made of iron

When you found the key did you notice the thimble on the left of the screen?
sandy ruspoli No, can’t see it Sandy
Could tjat round piece be a part of potters wheel
I don't get your reasons for not taking the knife. What was "naughty " or illegal about it?

It is illegal here to carry weapons so when you find them in random places you're more than probably holding evidence of a crime lol
TheCamshafter since when are the British paranoid about being searched by police?
The pottery might be a stopper/weight for saerkraut potts. They were clay made, with a salt enamel/glaze.
Thanks I'll look into that!

Brilliant as ever Si. So interesting. Do you ever make any money from this?
Sue Taylor No I don't sell my finds, wouldn't be worth much anyway. It's worth more to me as a piece of history, and a thing that tells a tale
its a plug to the river lol
Im sure that knife was only a sailing knife and the hook is a line cutter

We call clay marbles Megs in the US. (I don't know why.)
Just out of curiosity why is it illegal to collect dropped bullets?
It's illegal here to carry live bullets without a firearms licence.
