Wow, I've been making jokes that Roger would drop "The Dark Side of the Moon (Roger's Version)" ever since the whole beef between him and David seemingly reignited over the whole Russia/Ukraine thing, but I never thought he'd be crazy enough to actually do it.
It was already going down as David said NO to Boycott Divest Sanction in 2014 when Roger wanted him to join the Israel boycott when The Rolling Stones went to Tel Aviv. David said no and after that Roger went back to talking smack about David and Rick (who is not here to defend himself). He said he was twice the musician that either were LOL! Saying neither could write songs. Trashed David's family and Rick's legacy after Dark Side.
I think Bob Dylan’s recently released “Shadow Kingdom” is a good example on how remakes of classic songs can be done in a pretty good way. It adds new flavor to the song, but the songs he remade on that record aren’t even his “greatest hits” songs, so it never has that cash grab feeling like Roger’s remake of DSOTM does.
Hot take... I liked this song. I think its kinda sensual. I can see myself get high and listening to this. Him coming back to this album and not trying to replace David's vocals is pretty cool actually. I like the idea of him adding more lines and reading it like a poem. Money was a poem afterall. If you ask me I'd wait till the album is out and maybe it'll fit better In the album.
Taking some of the best and most iconic rock soloing out not because they need to be but because his ego is hurt is one of the pettiest things i’ve ever seen an artist do
I doubt that's why he did it man. Feel like it's deeper than that, not saying it's great but like, you're acting like he did it because he's feuding with david gilmour or some shit, and i can tell you it's probably more self absorbed than that, it's not like ego beef. It's not like he took the solos out, he for real made like a different song from scratch. The whole thing didn't need to happen, and like, regardless of how good it is, it's not like he's doing it out of pettiness, he legit has some artistic intent. Not saying it's good, but like, at least dislike it for the right reasons. It's just not really that good. As far as not having a David Gilmour guitar solo in it, idk, doesn't have fucking Rick Wright keyboards or nick Mason drums either. That's not the reason it sucks, and it's not like he's doing it to get back at David Gilmour. He's even said David's a good guitar player and shit, it's not like he's going on spotify and taking out the guitar solo on it.
@@jordanestes1997 look up Rogers Waters stating Pink Floyd is "far far more important" than the biggest modern acts. I'm a huge Pink Floyd fan, but even look up what he's talking about the reason behind this redux. This may be one of the most overt examples of an artist's ego driving their their works. I mean, c'mon. He's stating these songs are his, not the bands.
@williammarino1256 I get that, but like, it's a certain kind of ego though. Dude really believes that what he has to say is that important. It's not just him that's important, but his work, to him. I'm not saying it isn't ego, but it's not petty though, I'll give him that. Cringey, but there's genuine earnestness to it for him. Pretty silly, but it isn't petty
@williammarino1256 it's not beef is what I'm trying to say. I think his band mates definitely deserve their flowers from him, but as far as the intent, him wanting to control and reshape a piece of work that has nothing but his words on it, idk, thats Roger wanting to change the world, as egotistical as that is, it isn't just about changing his and his band mates album
@williammarino1256 it isn't just about ego is my only point. He definitely believes in the topics and shit. I think it's more lazy than it is petty, dude should just make more new music. Dude should explore more, find brand new words to express himself, but I get it, he's old and is proud of the lyrics on dark side and wants to re do it because he really likes that album and now he can control it, do whatever he wants with it. Its lazy to me, and self absorbed, but like, the topics are relevant so idk, he can do what he wants. I think he's kinda brave honestly because he is going to get SHIT on. I've just seen enough of him praising Rick's and Dave's contributions to pink floyd that whenever I see the media trying to blow up some beef or something, I just dont care. It's all love at the end of the day, I think he does value his bandmates, he just definitely loves himself haha
If you think about it, Rog is right. Money is the root of all evil, because if he currently had no money we wouldn't have had to hear that. Great commentary Rog
Yeah that's how I felt, I've kinda just learned to ignore Waters' attempt to sabotage his own legacy and this is so far away from the original he made it pretty easy
Yeah. Ruination of songs by covers is a vastly over-exaggerated menace. This new version has no impact on the original. Maybe if he went into a rap about how much he likes to touch little children or how hitler was just misunderstood, that might ruin something.
Waters must have had a “hold my beer” moment after listening to Nostalgia Critic’s version of The Wall. Bet this one won’t have Rob Scallon on it, though 😢
Roger is overrated. He could put a lyric together, at times in the '70s, but he's an average bass player and a poor vocalist. I hate that he only wrote half of Dark Side of the Moon but he's trying to claim it as his own personal album with this remake. Awful.
fucking false roger litterally wrote dsotm, the wall, animals and wish you were here and the final cut.On top of that he does like 90s percent of vocals after dsotm
@@bluemonsterblake8641 ...wut? The only songs he does majority vocals on are Brain Damage and Eclipse, which are both part of the same song. Even then, Gilmour sings on the harmonies. The rest of the album is Dave Gilmour on lead vocals
@@bluemonsterblake8641 I would still argue that the most iconic songs from The Wall (Hey You and Comfortable Numb) and albums afterwards were sung mostly by Gilmour and the guitar certainly was done by him. There is a reason why Learning to Fly and High Hopes are classics despite being Waters being absent
Definitely gives Tom Waits vibes with that gravely spoken word voice. I don't hate this version. Obviously he's not trying to redo the same thing they did in 1973. I think it sounds kinda cool.
Very morbidly excited to see what he did with On the Run to get an explicit tag on it. That said I found the backing instrumental track to be fairly interesting--very atmospheric and truly menacing in the way Rog was attempting to be in the vocal--and I might enjoy a fully instrumental remake in this style. Or maybe with a different vocalist and the new lyrics cut or revised. It wouldn't be a classic or anything, but I think I might enjoy it in the way I enjoyed Flips' and Easy Star All-Stars' full album covers. I think it's wild that Roger set out to prove that his contributions defined DSotM; made the music less interesting, but still somehow remained the least interesting part of the thing. 1/10, one point for the instrumental. Alone and with some kind of solo(s) in place of the spoken word bit, I might give the instrumental itself a 7+ score.
DSOTM isn't ruined. I just listened to it on my computer, and I have it on vinyl and cd. Sgt Peppers wasn't ruined when the movie came out. It was exactly the same. Nothing changed except for a different interpretation...not unlike DSOTM reggae , or bluegrass, or any of the other gazillion reinterpretations.
Roger really decided to replace the vocals with a version that sounds like the gorilla voice Frank Zappa used in the live version of Stink-Foot and in One Size Fits All and no studio head called it off immediately? Goddamn
This feels of a piece with Elon Musk renaming+rebranding Twitter - basically someone in possession of a beloved property going *so* far out of their way to ruin it
Suprised I haven't seen this mentioned, but this is an incredible copy of the Hadestown musical. The vocal style and the whole "Welcome to Hell" monologue is lifted straight from it.
I have never been more thankful for having skimmed through a song in my life. From the preview of Us & Them to that god awful demake of Comfortably Numb I knew this was gonna be bad but I didn't expect it to be "spoken word" bad.

I think this version's got a really cool vibe. Folksy, dark, and kind of mean. I admire making it un-commercial, both considering that it was their most commercially successful song and the subject matter of the lyrics. Not a super commercial version, so it's not going to be as "fun" and "catchy" as the original, but that's not necessarily bad. Especially since being commercial is seemingly antithetical to the point of the song.
Between this and Nostalgia Critic’s whole thing it’s a miracle Pink Floyd’s reputation is hanging on 😂 Like obviously the originals don’t get worse but boy is everyone trying
What do you mean, "everyone"? Roger Waters hasn't been an integral part of Pink Floyd since before you were born. And the Nostalgia Critic? You're giving him credence in Pink Floyd's legacy? Like... why? That has got to be one of the most fucked takes i ever saw.
i would argue nostalgia critic's video and album were probably slightly beneficial for the album, getting the whole internet riled up in favour of pink floyd and the wall and possibly introducing a bit of a younger audience to it
After watching this video, I went to hear the original song. Then I started dying laughing because Fantano’s impression of Rog’s “singing” was so spot on 😂
I'm with you on Animals. I'm also not a big fan of Dark Side of the Moon but I don't know what he was thinking with this release. It's both simultaneously boring and weird, which seems like a contradiction. I'll stick with the original. Maybe now I'll appreciate it more.
@@jeremyc9593 how can be overrated? if it's well balanced and have a clear read in terms of art prog, even is iconic and protagonist of that subgenre, plus the tracklist is well consistent, is solid to hear it by each song and also as a whole album, it has an artistic self defense
@@conormurphy4328 In terms of Pink Floyd's discography, yes, it is. It's gateway Floyd. You also say that as if this is the only place that anyone has ever mentioned this.
I hear "On the Run" will be a sort-of ASMR of Waters licking a microphone while saying "loo-ro-loo-loo, lo-ro-loo-loo" to the tune of the original programmed notes. Ground-breaking stuff.
As someone who’s listened to Dark Side of the Moon so many times that I can practically pinpoint every single detail of each song, I’m extremely worried about this new version. I get that the saying “Nobody asked for this” has been beaten into the ground as of late, but I’m 100% confident in saying that nobody wanted a slow burn rendition of Money that takes out half the solos and replaces it with spoken word
Water's "Floyd" was good until it melted w/ The Final Cut. Gilmour's "Floyd" brought back what it was missing. Syd's Floyd remains as a special kind of weird. Syd's Floyd: Piper At... Water's Best: The Wall Gilmour's Best: Momentary Lapse...
I actually like the track, knowing Roger as an artist (through his work obviously) I think the vibe on his new Money is very much tongue-in-cheek, it’s over the top purposefully. I mean, on the fade out there’s the “How much you givin’ away?” “Uh… None.” And I personally am fine with the dirge nature of the track as a pay attention listening kind of thing. I like the strings too, the song feels very noir, but again, in a self aware way.
remastering of a classic, it's akin to attempting to repaint the Mona Lisa with neon spray paint. A touch of new isn't always the recipe for a better rendition, especially when the original is already a classic. It appears Roger might have gotten himself in deep "Waters" with this one
y'know everytime I think we got to move past 2019's rendition of "The Wall" by Doug Walker, there's something that happens that let's Anthony remind us all about what a shitshow that was lmao
I’m a 64 year old dinosaur still going with cd’s which are getting harder to find without ordering off the net. However I was in Walmart where they do sell a limited number of vinyl and CD’s and what a treat I found! Dark Side Of The Moon live from Wembly recorded in 1974. I was interested to see how it sounded and was very, very impressed. Sound quality for something recorded 49 years ago magnificent and performance tight. My suggestion people while the Pulse version might be great this with the 4 of them at Wembly is head over heels better than what Roger is now going to release.
the theater kid comment is completely and totally Roger. as someone who loves Roger's solo stuff, him at his most theater kid, I enjoyed the reinterpretation. he's taking back his lyrics and re-contextualizing them in a "Roger" song. but Roger isn't for everyone. Roger isn't even for most people. so yeah, as someone who adores The Final Cut and Amused To Death, I enjoyed this. it would have sounded better 30 years ago when his voice wasn't completely blown out, but still. if something good can come out of this project though, it's music criticism and casual listeners giving The Division Bell a critical reappraisal; now that Waters has revealed he isn't the "secret sauce" that "made" Pink Floyd good, people may be able to appreciate that album full of Pink Floyd gems for what it is rather than what it isn't.
He made this during the lockdown sessions. I really enjoy the Money redux. But I've long gotten used to having the Pink Floyd opinions no one else on Earth has.
i feel like the time cover/redux is infinitely better, if only for the lyrical content being reflective of how he's aged. it's somber, stripped-back and barely what it once was, but it's... still time. i feel like the direction actually makes sense, unlike with money.
This man really said of all the great inventive songs on the album, that Money is one of their best, come on man. Yes money is a good song but it's also the most single esque song that is easier to listen to. Use and Them, Time, The Great Gig in the Sky and Any Colour You Like all beat Money for me because they're way more rewarding listens, it's much more engaging and intuitive as a song. It challenges the listener much more and comes with more surprises and switches in the song, which I find a lot more enjoyable to listen to.
I don't know what Fantano is on about. I'm glad Roger finally put out the theme song for the cult failed cancelled after one season FX show Money. Didn't think it needed the extra 7 minutes though.

Before, I would never call the original track "subtle" in its meaning, but this redux leaves me with no other word to describe it
Rog out here trying to give Doug Walker some competition
If we're remaking stuff I would love to hear Yebba cover "Great Gig in the Sky"
could be good.
but tbh a 100 gecs cover of the same would have been better than this.
Shine On You Crazy Dimond (feat DJ Khaled, Lil Baby, Bad Bunny, Drake, Ice Spice, Jimi "Future" Hendrix, R Kelly & Corey Feldman)
The Mr Krabs AI singing Money fucking destroys this
Shit as much as I love funny Mr. Krabs AI covers, not even that could make bearable that shit Roger put instead of the solo.
Now we need Gilmour & Mason's re-recording of Wish You Were Here. With Guy Pratt on bass and, to really piss Roger off, new lyrics by Polly 😅
If you think about it, Rog is right. Money is the root of all evil, because if he currently had no money we wouldn't have had to hear that. Great commentary Rog
honestly this is fascinating, just heard the track and it’s totally its own thing. I don’t love it but I don’t care or feel like anything got ruined
No, I'm sorry but you have to have a completely incendiary take on the Internet.
I mostly like the new version except for that dogshit poetry section but the original is better.
@@Ryannnnnnnnnnnnnnnnt
Waters must have had a “hold my beer” moment after listening to Nostalgia Critic’s version of The Wall. Bet this one won’t have Rob Scallon on it, though 😢
In my head canon that’s exactly how it happened lol
But will the videos have Corey Taylor? And what does he think?
Roger was always a great writer, but Dave Gilmour always carried their most iconic tracks with his vocals and guitar work
Roger is overrated.
@@Bigparr43 i meant after dark side
@@bluemonsterblake8641 I would still argue that the most iconic songs from The Wall (Hey You and Comfortable Numb) and albums afterwards were sung mostly by Gilmour and the guitar certainly was done by him. There is a reason why Learning to Fly and High Hopes are classics despite being Waters being absent
Animals is really good. It has a good flow. It's also one of my favorite albums for roadtrips and for playing as I fall asleep (that's a compliment)
Animals is my personal favorite
that's cool, I hope you're not the one driving during the roadtrips tho lol
Definitely gives Tom Waits vibes with that gravely spoken word voice. I don't hate this version. Obviously he's not trying to redo the same thing they did in 1973. I think it sounds kinda cool.
I like it until the spoken word nonsense.
Agreed. Would almost always listen to classic DSOTM over this but I can appreciate the brooding tone of this version.
Roger 100% threw some F-bombs, slurs or hate speech just because.
@@Daniel-jz9tdhe probably went all "in the flesh" for that one lol
Probably just “i’ve been mad for fucking years” in speak to me
@@myamdane6895that's literally the only reason the original was marked explicit, so that's probably it.
DSOTM isn't ruined. I just listened to it on my computer, and I have it on vinyl and cd. Sgt Peppers wasn't ruined when the movie came out. It was exactly the same. Nothing changed except for a different interpretation...not unlike DSOTM reggae , or bluegrass, or any of the other gazillion reinterpretations.
roger waters is absolutely an 80 year old theater kid
Roger really decided to replace the vocals with a version that sounds like the gorilla voice Frank Zappa used in the live version of Stink-Foot and in One Size Fits All and no studio head called it off immediately? Goddamn
This feels of a piece with Elon Musk renaming+rebranding Twitter - basically someone in possession of a beloved property going *so* far out of their way to ruin it
Suprised I haven't seen this mentioned, but this is an incredible copy of the Hadestown musical. The vocal style and the whole "Welcome to Hell" monologue is lifted straight from it.
I would absolutely listen to a Tonetta cover of Dark Side of the Moon. Absolutely.
1:57 had me like 😮for like 2 whole minutes.
Your Roger Waters impression sounds like a dark elf from Morrowind.
I was like "how bad could it be"? then i listened to it, and was like okay, doesnt sound so bad so far............. then his vocals came in xD
Really enjoyed Roger's Batman impression on this track
I'm scared for Any Colour You Like having no synths what-so-ever, that's my fav jam off that record
I have never been more thankful for having skimmed through a song in my life. From the preview of Us & Them to that god awful demake of Comfortably Numb I knew this was gonna be bad but I didn't expect it to be "spoken word" bad.

I would offer ANY amount of money for Tonetta to cover DSotM.
Honestly would actually be much more interesting than this version. At least Tonetta has some grit,
Please let this happen
0:45 can’t believe I’m in Anthony’s canon universe
so this is just going to be Dark Side of the Moon (Roger’s Version) ???
It sounds like a cover made for an episode of peaky blinders

This version of Roger's version of Money is like watching a horrible train wreck and the first words out of your mouth are: WTF?!?!
I agree. It sounds like a Leonard Cohen copycat cover.
I don't know. My copy from '77 still sounds fine.
I have to admit, I’m very curious to hear what an explicit version of On The Run sounds like
I think this version's got a really cool vibe.
Between this and Nostalgia Critic’s whole thing it’s a miracle Pink Floyd’s reputation is hanging on 😂
Like obviously the originals don’t get worse but boy is everyone trying
What do you mean, "everyone"? Roger Waters hasn't been an integral part of Pink Floyd since before you were born. And the Nostalgia Critic? You're giving him credence in Pink Floyd's legacy? Like... why? That has got to be one of the most fucked takes i ever saw.
NC ain’t got sh!t on PF.
give doug this, at least he didn't ruin something that he himself created
i would argue nostalgia critic's video and album were probably slightly beneficial for the album, getting the whole internet riled up in favour of pink floyd and the wall and possibly introducing a bit of a younger audience to it
@@mutantfreak48nah it was fucking awful on every account
Two things that made Dark Side so great: Gilmour's vocals and Gilmour's guitar ... That's why Roger has to deconstruct it 🙄
After watching this video, I went to hear the original song. Then I started dying laughing because Fantano’s impression of Rog’s “singing” was so spot on 😂
At times it came across as a kind of tongue-in-cheek vocal referencing of Leonard Cohen's 'Everybody Knows' in a strange way...
still cant belive melon is getting sued
[gravelly voice] "look what money made me do"
I'm with you on Animals. I'm also not a big fan of Dark Side of the Moon but I don't know what he was thinking with this release. It's both simultaneously boring and weird, which seems like a contradiction. I'll stick with the original. Maybe now I'll appreciate it more.
Same. While still a great album, of course, I've always found DSOTM to be overrated.
yup, and maybe that was the point kek
Saying one of the most popular and acclaimed albums ever is overrated is exactly what I’d expect from fantano’s comment section
Dark Side is not ruined....
It's still here in all its 1973 glory. This is just something different to listen to.... a few times.
I was worried that you were actually going to play the audio there. Thanks for warning me about a horrible evil to avoid at all costs.
Unironically love this recording. It's incredible.
Same here.
that impression of his vocal presence was fantastic.
The track Money has been renamed 'Rubles' on this album
Anthony don’t think you can distract us from you listening to greta van fleet at the start of the video
Anthony a secret fan, I knew
Water's "Floyd" was good until it melted w/ The Final Cut. Gilmour's "Floyd" brought back what it was missing. Syd's Floyd remains as a special kind of weird.
Syd's Floyd: Piper At...
Water's Best: The Wall
Gilmour's Best: Momentary Lapse...
I love the final cut, it's not quite the wall but some great stuff on there
Momentary lapse of reason is fairly mid apart from on the turning away
I actually like the track, knowing Roger as an artist (through his work obviously) I think the vibe on his new Money is very much tongue-in-cheek, it’s over the top purposefully. I mean, on the fade out there’s the “How much you givin’ away?” “Uh… None.” And I personally am fine with the dirge nature of the track as a pay attention listening kind of thing. I like the strings too, the song feels very noir, but again, in a self aware way.
BRO THEY GONNA COOK YOU IN COURT
remastering of a classic, it's akin to attempting to repaint the Mona Lisa with neon spray paint. A touch of new isn't always the recipe for a better rendition, especially when the original is already a classic. It appears Roger might have gotten himself in deep "Waters" with this one
The spoken word stuff really cemented the fact that Roger Waters is Roger Waters' biggest fan.
The music was like some background music in Twin Peaks like when Audrey is sneaking around the lodge spying on people.
y'know everytime I think we got to move past 2019's rendition of "The Wall" by Doug Walker, there's something that happens that let's Anthony remind us all about what a shitshow that was lmao
Did somebody confiscate and destroy every copy of the original DSOTM? If not, then it hasn't been ruined.
I love how he’s got a Greta Van Fleet song paused up top in the beginning.
I just figured it’d be roger waters voice doing all of the instruments and synths
the theater kid comment is completely and totally Roger. as someone who loves Roger's solo stuff, him at his most theater kid, I enjoyed the reinterpretation. he's taking back his lyrics and re-contextualizing them in a "Roger" song. but Roger isn't for everyone.
This has nothing to do with Pink Floyd.
@@rmvdhaakits a pink floyd song so, with respect, it definitely does.
Feeling the same way, I felt gaslit not seeing anybody like it
i feel like the time cover/redux is infinitely better, if only for the lyrical content being reflective of how he's aged. it's somber, stripped-back and barely what it once was, but it's... still time. i feel like the direction actually makes sense, unlike with money.
Thank you for taking a break from your Greta Van Fleet jam sesh to record this review
Melon's impression made me think, 'Oh. This is Batman does DSOTM'. More specifically Will Arnett's Bats. This is now my head canon for the redux.
