Alas, just seen that Kerr's miniature railway is closing for good at the end of September 2020. Sadly, not enough passengers. The video is on their Facebook page. You can tell the guy is heartbroken. 😢
Yep and the reason for the passenger numbers falling is because the play park moved closer to the car park. They had plans to extend towards there but the council ended up declining it.
It’s such a shame. My nana lives in Arbroath and when I was a kid I used to ride on the miniature railway when I visited in summer. Went to Arbroath a fortnight ago and decided to have a look at the railway, part of it has been ripped up now and it all just looked so heartbreaking
After this line struggled and closed, presumably due to Covid, John and a busines partner now run Cleethorpes Coast minature railway and Scarborough North Bay railway. So, the passion lives on...

Watching this vid from a hut at the bottom of mainland Australia (Wilsons Promontory) in Tidal River, it has struck me that you have both done a remarkable thing. To travel the length and breadth of a country, any country, is an immense achievement. You should be proud, as am I for having helped you both do this in a very small way

Being from Arbroath I absolutely loved this episode. I moved out a couple of years back but I still absolutely love that wee town. Kerr's miniature railway was an absolute treat for me every summer as a kid. There's a plaque for John's grandad at Arbroath train station, oddly I think I can still remember when he died even though it was years ago. Also, alongside the miniature railway there used to be other vehicles for the kids to ride in, a fire engine and a bus like the small one you can see at 9:40. My grandad used to paint and drive them every year and until now I'd completely forgotten about that. This video really put a smile on my face, thanks for the nostalgia :)
The term 'Links' doesn't specifically mean a golf course Geoff, (I'm surprised John didn't put you right on this). It means hillocky sandy ground covered by coarse grass near the sea. Golf courses built on this sort of land are therefore known as 'Links' courses.
I like the fact you just stand there filming that guy getting your bags out of his car whilst he has been called to help the coast guard 🧳 This is a brilliant series by the way. It’s one of those series that you don’t want to end.
I chuckle a little every time I hear the two tone horns of UK locomotives. They're so odd sounding to me compared to the chimed horns of the states. Really love your videos. Glad I found out about them through Tom Scott.
The video brought back lots of happy memories for my partner, David, who was born and brought up in Broughty Ferry in the 1950s and 60s. He used to love being taken to Kerr's Miniature Railway by his parents as a kid. He has lots of tales of using and watching the steam trains at West Ferry Station (now defunct) between Broughty and Dundee. Broughty Ferry seems to have a few more trains stopping at it (we were there a few weeks ago) than at our last visit in 2010. I'm also not a puffer nutter, but railways (and model railways) are in my blood (have a large Swiss model railway layout in our attic). My Grandad was a steam engine driver in Chatham Dockyard in the early 20th Century. David, however, was an 'anorak' and used to cycle from BF to Perth with his friend to train spot in the latter days of steam in the early 1960s.
During the series I noticed that Britain and Ireland still have working signal boxes and semaphore signals at time of filming. In Queensland as far as I know we no longer have these. I retired from the railway in 2012. The last signal cabin to be in operation in Queensland was at Callemondah near Gladstone. All the signals and points are now controlled remotely from one control centre. Unless that plan wasn’t carried through.
Nairn used to have two signal boxes, one at either end of the platforms. To save time (and the signalman's legs) a bicycle was provided for him to traverse between the two!!
Scotrail guard here . . . I'm with John and Geoff . . . Not a puffer nutter - but generally someone who basically likes vehicles. If it has an engine and moves I'm interested (trains, cars, aeroplanes). Incidentally, worked an all stopper from Glasgow today (all the wee stops, including Balmossie, Barry Links and Golf street). The new timetables have more trains (not loads, but more than 1 each direction a day) And whilst I've never seen a passenger at Barry Links (in a year as guard) . . . More and more people are using the other small stations. Monifieth gets a semi-regular service these days and it's getting busier and busier. Balmossie and Golf st. will now often have at least 1 or 2 passengers (most I've seen at once is 6) every time you stop.
Once upon a time there was an evening train that ran from Edinburgh to Carnoustie calling at all of the stations via Dunfermline. The train would split at Dundee with only the forward portion going on to Carnoustie. Another completely unrelated fact - on two occasions I have ridden a horse over the level crossing at Carnoustie.
You mentioned at some point how you loved the people in this series most of all. Couldn't agree more. I hope John's doing well. Sad to read about the closure of his family's miniature railway in 2020.
He also has a nice smile, is enthusiastic about what he does, and brings joy to children by carrying on the hobby his grandfather started. Obviously he has some flaw that we can't see... And then it turns out he volunteers with the Coast Guard and goes off to save lives when his beeper goes off!

At Stonehaven on New Year's Eve, they have the Fireball procession, where burly guys stroll along the promenade twirling these massive fully-alight cages of ignited material in the air before hurling them into the sea!! One year Ill have to pop up and have a look!! The telegraph poles between Huntly and Insch are the last ones you say? The ones in East Anglia (on the Norwich - Lowestoft/Sheringham lines) must have been removed then?
I know it's nearly the last vlog but I noticed if you had caught the earlier train from Henley the effect would allow you to get around all the stations in less than 100 days ........ Oh well gives you something to aim for next year. Well done to you both
And a recent (Post is January 2022) shows almost all track are pulled up except for the turntable and one train looks like it’s outside by itself; the buildings other than the pedestrian bridge over the tracks are still there.

Here in Australia, we have a goup of people, who are referred to as gunzles...train and railway fanatics, who photograph trains and document every bit of railway history. Ironically, gunzles rarely buy a ticket or actually ride on the trains.

Aw! You didn't mention Inverurie! Anyway, there's a lot of slack in the timetable between Inverness and Aberdeen due to the fact there are of much passing loops. In the winter the entire line is quite a nightmare if it congested. Let's not mention the winter too...
Lewis Bergen - project ongoing to dual the track by 2019...with a new station at Kintore. This should improve speed and reliability between Aberdeen and Inverness as well as allow more trains, especially south of Inverurie.
Yup, fully aware of it myself, I'm from Kemnay orginally, Transport is a small passion of mine, and I've been tracking the progress of the A2I project for sometime. Don't get me wrong, I'm still a litlle anxious that it's taken this long to get a statin back in Kintore, when the folks there quite clearly need one, but what's slighly more important it the increase in capacity is so dearly needs. I just hope that the project includes the future proofing of the line, so that it may one day be electfried! One can dream....
It wasn't due to covid. It was due to the lack of interest on the railway. The park now situated by the car park used to be down by KMR. When the play park moved the interest went down since people didn't always venture down as far so the knowlage of the railway being there became less causing the numbers to drop. I believe planning was made to extend the railway towards the car park but the council made a last minute decision to not allow the extension to go ahead.

I can't believe you didn't stop at Stonehaven, open air pool, incredible war memorial with an incredible view, one of the most stunning castle ruins in scotland, the bay fish and chips is a pilgrimage from locals in the area, and of course some o fb the best ice cream you'll ever taste, you didn't even get to try a buttery! What stands out to me is that a lot of your population centres and infrastructure seems to follow your coastlines. That's quite alien to me given Belgium only has 41.5 miles of coastline... we've got a tram and a B-road which run the length of it and that's it. 2 small cities and 11 small towns (admittently bloated by tourism in the summer), with the vast majority of our population living in-land along with most of our infrastructure.
It's because we live on an island, Jan. Not only does it affect our thinking, but also the way the country has developed. Trading with places outside the island had to be from coastal towns which is why they grew as they did (just like Ostend and Zeebrugge). London, Glasgow, Bristol, Aberdeen, Southampton, Plymouth, Edinburgh/Leith, Hull, Portsmouth, Liverpool, Cardiff, Newcastle and Swansea (to name but a few) all developed in this way. In the days before railways, it was common to travel between these coastal towns and cities by sea rather than road.

I'm a Kerr too! My grandfather was a train driver on the Ffestiniog Railway in Wales, I feel like it's a proper family thing now! :P

What stands out to me is that a lot of your population centres and infrastructure seems to follow your coastlines. That's quite alien to me given Belgium only has 41.5 miles of coastline... we've got a tram and a B-road which run the length of it and that's it. 2 small cities and 11 small towns (admittently bloated by tourism in the summer), with the vast majority of our population living in-land along with most of our infrastructure.
It's because we live on an island, Jan. Not only does it affect our thinking, but also the way the country has developed. Trading with places outside the island had to be from coastal towns which is why they grew as they did (just like Ostend and Zeebrugge). London, Glasgow, Bristol, Aberdeen, Southampton, Plymouth, Edinburgh/Leith, Hull, Portsmouth, Liverpool, Cardiff, Newcastle and Swansea (to name but a few) all developed in this way. In the days before railways, it was common to travel between these coastal towns and cities by sea rather than road.
On train between Huntly and Insch? I didn't see footage of Huntly station! Nor Elgin or Keith either for that matter! You'll just have to go back, otherwise it hasn't been done!
The U. S. version of "puffer nutter" (great term!) is Foamer; as in foams at the mouth when hears train whistle.

Yep it's unfortunate. Believe it or not It wasn't due to covid. It was due to the lack of interest on the railway. The park now situated by the car park used to be down by KMR. When the play park moved the interest went down since people didn't always venture down as far so the knowlage of the railway being there became less causing the numbers to drop. I believe planning was made to extend the railway towards the car park but the council made a last minute decision to not allow the extension to go ahead.
