- Hey guys! Today is another episode from my series Thrift Store Makeovers, where I take a used, worn out item (OR sometimes from yard sales or off of ebay) clean it up, fix it up and decorate it. I love hunting through thrift stores to find old, rejected items and then decorating them and putting my own style on them to turn them into new pieces of art. I've definitely missed these thrift flips and I want to do more thrifting soon!
In this episode I am going to be painting on and customizing both a ceramic cupcake bank AND a leather liz claiborne purse.

Hey! my name is Moriah (pronounced muh-rye-yuh 😂 ) and this is my channel....obviously. I'm 27 and like doing anything creative...and being snarky.....just a lil. I make a lot of decorating, painting and general art videos here. I'm obsessed with editing and adding lil bits to my videos, so if that's not your thing....oof you may hate this haha. I paint on squishies, thrift store finds, and other random things I pick up. I also love to draw, but don't expect anything too skilled, I'm not the best at that haha. You will also find occasional crafting/testing crafting kits on my channel which are always a hot mess. And even some baking (REALLY bad at that, but it's fun to try LOL).

7:33 Fun Fact! The term "piggy bank" was a complete misunderstanding! Pygg clay was commonly used to make little dishes and pots that people would put spare change in. So "Pygg Banks" were a thing. Someone ordered a bunch of "Pygg banks" from a potter that misunderstood and made little coin pots in the shape of pigs. They received these absolute adorable puns and went ahead and used them as the party gifts or whatever they were doing with them (I don't remember) and people loved the pun! "Pyggy Banks" became "Piggy Banks" and the tradition lived on. It might not be Pygg clay, but I would say it still counts.

I'm rewatching some old videos... and I'm realizing that Jerry the Cherry and Angry Lemon would be a great duo.
The bag just gives me hippie, free spirited and cute vibes! Love it. Makes me wish I had leather paint to make my own bag!

I love _love_ _LOVE_ the bag 🤩
But pro tip for viewers when working with Angelus leather paints; always _always_ prep the surface with deglazer to strip the oils & existing factory finish off the bag (or shoe or leather jacket or whatever it is you're customizing), prior to beginning painting.
Many factory finishes have "non-stick" properties to make them "easy to clean" that will lead to paint applied directly to them eventually peeling; that old clear-coat finish _needs_ to be stripped off to give the leather paint a semi-porous raw surface to bond to. Deglazing prep is a super important step to extending the life of your customization.

is there any substitute for deglazer?? i’d love to customize some leather items but would truthfully prefer to avoid having to buy anything new!! if not, do you have any recommendations?
@@sienagans sometimes it's been hard to get my hands on because _one_ of the ingredients in it is usually isopropyl alcohol, which there had intermittently been production shortages of towards the beginning of the pandemic where manufacturers were diverting their supplies for medical usage.
So when I couldn't get my hands on proper deglazer, since acetone is the other primary ingredient I found diluted nail-polish remover to be a somewhat passable substitute? Without alcohol, though, it needs to be used sparingly - with a _lightly_ dampened cloth - because without the alcohol in the solution it takes longer to evaporate, so the resultant "wet" acetone can dry out or damage the leather if it soaks into the leather before evaporating or being wiped off.
If you _can_ buy the real thing, however, it's not very expensive (I think only $5-6 at the neighborhood craft store), I find it less messy & more predictable to use.
I just ADORE the bag. For some reason I thought you would turn it into an icecream theme (probably thinking of the backpack), but I adore the cow print. Kinda makes me wanna get a similar bag and do an icecream cowprint

Little advice for the angelus paint on metal: just wait for it to dry and remove it with nail polish thinner! I use it all the time and it's very easy :)

Here's an idea: instead of making a chess set or cards, Moriah could make a custom board game - kinda like some traditional games but with her own design & rules. I've made a couple of board games before and it's really fun (but time consuming). I would love to see Moriah make one!!

Loved the vid! The bag is definetely wild and it's brave of you for choosing to design it that way, but it turned out pretty cool (love the tiffany, or, sory gift box blue). And Jerry the cherry is apsolutly amazing, I can't wait for him to make a comeback! The pink color really suits him but I'm kinda dissapointed that he isn't laying on his stomack (in a pose like those soft and slow squishies) with legs streched out backwards and arms in front. And the but crack is an amazing idea, love it!

I really love the second design! However, I do have an idea for what you could have done instead. Kind of similar, but I'm still going to share. So, there would be the living cherry on top, I'd call her Mary the Cherry. She was a young little cherry who loved rainbows. The icing on her cupcake was just white, and she didn't like the bland color. So, she changed it. You could show the bottom half of the icing being white still, and the top being rainbow, as she was in the middle of using her cherry magic to make the icing rainbow.
