    What a great episode. So many important life lessons contained in it. How the marrying kind of love is much deeper than liking someone or having sympathy for someone. And in the end, both Joe and Tessa came to realize that neither of them possessed that kind of love for each other.

      Agreed. Great character interaction in this one. Also probably the closest the Cartwrights will ever get to being married. I can't imagine a scenario where they get closer, but I havent seen all the episodes yet.

      And Ben was so magnanimous. He could have exposed her when he knew that she could see, but instead he gave thought as to what to do. He would have been justified in being angry at the deception and cast them out, but instead he continues to be kind and help them.

      Yes, it takes courage and honesty to admit to yourself, and the one who loves you more than you love them, that you don't have the level of love and commitment towards them that's necessary for marriage.
      That was a nice moment when Tessa and Joe were finally honest with each other.

      @Joe Owens. I agree Joe. It's extremely important to always tell the truth. Look what happened when Tessa's dad lied to the Cartwrights about her having a fiancee and how her fiancee didn't want her anymore because she's blind. I think that increased Little Joe feeling guilty which caused him to be impetuous when he proposed to her. In my opinion, marriage should not be taken lightly. A successful marriage is based on the old saying "it's what's inside that counts." It's also based on unconditional love for each other. I'm glad that both Tessa and Joe realized that. I will admit that I do enjoy Little Joe's romances. This was an excellent episode.

    Marlyn Mason did a superb job playing a blind woman! 👏. I don't know how many of you know this, but Melissa Sue Anderson who played Mary Ingalls in "Little House on the Prairie" wore special contacts that caused her to literally not be able to see anything when she played Mary Ingalls. I don't know if Marlyn Mason did that in this episode of "Bonanza" or not.

    • @linsqopiring6816
      @linsqopiring6816 3 месяца назад

      Probably, she had the same look. And it would have been likely for Landon to use the same tricks he learned on Bonanza for his show. Strange though, that the Ingles being dirt poor took Mary to San Fancisco to see a specialist but the Cartwrights didn't even try that.

  • @arlineabdalian8974

    This was a painful episode to watch except for the outstanding performance by Marlyn Mason. She took some very hackneyed dialogue and rendered it gold. And Michael Landon and Lorne Greene played their parts well too. However, it was still painful to watch, knowing that an otherwise perfect bride for Joe would leave at the end. A very sad episode. But thanks for airing it. It was worth it just to watch Marlyn deliver such a fine, nuanced performance.

      Not sad to me. Awesome. Why? I married back in the 80s... when I shouldn't have. Same for her towards me. Love? Yeah... but not enough for MARRIAGE. At 24, I knew there was potential trouble, but me and my Christian self said, if I love this woman right, the LORD would do the rest. Wrong. Marriage takes two. Well, eventually divorced. Better to wait for the right one, for the right reasons.

      It's sad to think that he thought more of himself and his own greed than he did for his daughters happiness. But that actually happened a lot back in those days. Folks married out of necessity and hoped that love would come later, which it often did. Nowadays folks marry out of lust only to find it won't ever lead to happiness and love. It either ends in hurt and divorce or they continue being content in their unhappiness. And once in a great while two beautiful souls join and live happily ever after.

      This is a year old comment I know, but I was also expecting Ben to break the news. I think he didn't because he didn't want to break Joe's heart because he had enough faith in the Tessa's character to believe she would tell him. When he first saw her, looking in the mirror I was ready for a customary scene of Ben calling someone out on their BS. I was pleasantly surprised that none of the Cartwrights, aside from maybe a tiny bit of Hoss, thought she was just taking them for a ride and marrying Joe for his money, which would be a plot point that would easily fit in earlier Bonanza writing.

      It's sad that the father and son wanted to use their daughter/sister to gain what THEY wanted and "guilted" her into it. Sad she wasn't strong enough to say, "No" to them.

      She eventually found her strength. Ben really came through with that talk he had with her: didn't lecture, didn't reveal that he knew the truth, didn't tell her what to do, just expressed his faith in her.

    I was disappointed because Tessa and little Joe had the beginnings of what can turn into the marriage kind of love. They just had a lot of outside selfish influences around them that were neither of their faults. This would have been a great Turning Point in Bonanza for Little Joe and Tessa to continue their relationship. But apparently the producers and writers just thought on to the next episode rather than develop this out.
