Your mission, should you choose to accept it... is to watch all of the Mission Impossible movies for the first time! That's right, this is my first time watching Mission: Impossible. Like, any of them. I have somehow never seen a single one. But that's about to change as I marathon all six leading up to the two-part finale of Ethan Hunt's sneaky sexy little adventures. This commentary track will self destruct in 5... 4... 3... 2... 💥
Plot (via Wiki & ChatGPT):
In Mission: Impossible 3, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) has retired from IMF fieldwork. He is approached by IMF Assistant Director of Operations John Musgrave (Billy Crudup) to rescue Lindsey Farris (Keri Russell) from arms dealer Owen Davian (Philip Seymour Hoffman). With his team, including Luther Stickell (Ving Rhames), Ethan rescues Lindsey, but she dies with an explosive pellet in her head. Ethan discovers a warning about Brassel (Laurence Fishburne) and Davian. They plan to capture Davian in Vatican City, and Ethan marries Julia Meade (Michelle Monaghan). They succeed, but Davian escapes with Julia. Ethan is apprehended by IMF, but Musgrave reveals the Rabbit's Foot is in Shanghai and helps him escape. Ethan retrieves it but is implanted with an explosive. Davian kills Julia, and Musgrave is revealed as the traitor. Ethan defeats Davian, saves Julia, and explains his IMF career to her. They start their honeymoon, and Ethan receives congratulations before leaving.
In Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, IMF agent Trevor Hanaway (Josh Holloway) is killed in Budapest by assassin Sabine Moreau (Léa Seydoux), who steals Russian nuclear launch codes to sell to "Cobalt". IMF agent Ethan Hunt is extracted from a Moscow prison by Hanaway's handler and girlfriend Jane Carter (Paula Patton) and field agent Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg). The team infiltrates the Kremlin but is exposed by Cobalt, escaping before a bomb destroys it. Ethan is arrested but escapes and meets with analyst William Brandt (Jeremy Renner). They discover Cobalt is Kurt Hendricks (Michael Nyqvist), aiming for nuclear war. The IMF Secretary initiates "Ghost Protocol" and Ethan pursues Cobalt.
The team plans to intercept Cobalt's associate Wistrom (Samuli Edelmann) and Moreau at the Burj Khalifa in Dubai. They fake meetings to acquire the launch codes but are forced to give the real ones. Moreau is killed, and Ethan pursues Wistrom. Jane and Benji confront Brandt, who reveals his past failure to protect Julia Meade, Ethan's wife. They learn Hendricks is buying a satellite from Brij Nath (Anil Kapoor) and pursue him to stop the missile launch. They succeed in disabling the missile and clear their name. Ethan receives a new mission and reveals Julia is alive. The team regroups, and Ethan disappears into the fog, hearing about The Syndicate.

I love this movie cause like, the plan isn't perfect. Ethan isn't perfect, shit goes wrong and it shows how good they are by rolling with the punches. The scene of him hitting the window and almost falling down is PERFECTION
Yeah, the series really starts with 3. That's where it nails the action, gadgets, suspense, and of course the stunts.

JJ Abrams did SUCH a great job with MI3. It’s the only one he directed but he’s gone on to produce every other film in the series.
Except for Dead Reckoning Parts 1&2.
Yet he did SUCH a bad job with The Rise of Skywalker.

So excited for these, this is when the series starts to become really incredible. The next two movies are two of my all-time favourite action films.

IKR. I grew up watching Ghost Protocol first. Then Rogue Nation came out and blew me away, loved it. Then I watched Fallout on my birthday on the big screen, one of the best filmgoing experiences ever, just phenomenal action filmmaking on display. I don't think there's any modern-day action films that really come close
Tom cruise is actually insane, but his action scenes are incredible because of it

MI 4,5, and 6 is maybe the best run of 3 action movies of all time. So glad that you're doing the rest of the series!
I'd also add MI:3 for the best run of 4 movies in an action franchise.

Its fantastic seeing someone so completely and enthusiastically engaged watching these movies for the first time, they're just fantastic and its easy to forget sometimes how unbearably tense those sequences were. I'm so glad a lot of people love them and the movies get the respect/admiration they deserve, as long as these movies keep making money we can hope that the studios will be convinced to make better stuff like this.

Phillip Seymour Hoffman is the most menacing villain in the franchise in my opinion, and it put JJ Abrams (one of my favorite directors) on the map.
Seeing the Burj Khalifa scene in an imax theater was the worst mistake I ever made
dude i STILL tense up at the burj khalifa scenes in 4, it was so well done. People also really missed out if they didn't see it in IMAX at the time
After your last commentary I was so looking forward to your reaction to just the opening scene of 3. It really set a new tone right from the get go.
I still remember my grandparents going to see the third film for date night, and I was so upset as a six year-old not being able to go! 😂Regardless, I have seen all of them in theaters since!

Glad you continued on after 2. Because they only get better and better. I thought JJ brought life back into the franchise with 3. But Brad Bird set the blueprint with Ghost protocol that they continued on. My favorite 3 are 4, 5 and 6

I just watched mission impossible 1-5 with your tracks and physically recoiled every time you can see Ethan climbing the building. I reverted to foetal form watching it.

Mission: Impossible 3 completely revitalized the series into how it is now and that is the best possible path. I would have hated it if they continued like MI2.
Saw it in IMAX and the shot of him leaning out the window in Dubai was stomach wrenching.
The bomb in that chicks head going off and shifting her damn eyes over always gave me a pit in my stomach. It’s just so fucking brutal.

MI2 and MI3 are my favorite of the franchise. MI2 is just total stupid fun I love it so much (+ tom cruise's look in that is 👌👌) and MI3 I was on the edge of my seat the whole time I watched it, I remember I was on a train to Chicago to meet a friend and I refused to leave the station until I finished the movie LOL
TC's look? Thandie Newton looks amazing in that movie. That's admittedly most of what I remember, and the dumb John Wu moments that are so indulgent but fun, like Face/Off but a lot less goofy.
The amount of times ive listened to these commentary tracks is a problem haha!
