Hey from Schenectady, NY. Just thought I would share with you that I have owned several Monte Carlos in my life, from 1976-1986 with the 86 being an SS with T-Tops. My 1978 was the same body as yours and from 78-88, they had the same frame design which was their biggest flaw. If you plan on making yours a Hot Rod like my 78 was, please do your home work 1st. Behind both rear wheels where the Frame rolls over the rear axle, it flattens out parallel to the road. On the very bottom of the frame behind the rear wheels is a large access hole to install the body mount. Take a garden hose with a nozzle to blast out that hole towards the rear bumper and see how must rust and mud comes out. If a lot comes out, prod the bottom of the frame between that large hole and rear bumper and make sure your frame is NOT rotted through. If its solid, that can be a totally awesome car like mine was, but mine was converted to a 4-speed stick. When I junked mine due to the frame rot, I kept all the clutch linkage from it to this day and also still have the Super T-10- 4-speed transmission I put in it back when I got out of high school. Hope this helps you before you put a lot of money in it. With the Super T-10, I could chirp it in 2nd and 3rd gears back in the day. If you are looking to build a Hot Rod like I had back in the day, I might consider parting with my clutch linkage, pedal assembly, transmission, clutch, pressure plate and flywheel. Just a thought.
