One thing I always love about this song, that isn't in this version of it (only versions of it I can find on RUclips are poor quality) is the version of it that Chumbawamba sang at the 1998 Britt Awards. The lyrics "He sings the songs that remind him of the good times, he sings the songs that remind him of the best times" they changed to "New Labour sold out the dockers, just like they'll sell out the rest of us". While flying red and black flags in the background of the stage, wearing shirts with various slogans on them (lead singer wore one with "SOLD OUT" written on it as a lot of people had started calling them sell outs). This is also the event where the lead singer dumped a pail of water on the Deputy Prime Minister.

    G'day Beth,
TubThumping was HUGE! down here in Australia too as we also use the terms "Pissing the night Away" "Sinking Piss" & getting "Pissed" for a night down the "Pub/Club" or going to all of them on a "Pub Crawl"...
& yeah no matter which Football Aussies Follow be it AFL, Soccer, League or Union Chanting "YOU'RE NEVER GONNA KEEP ME DOWN" after a loss raised the spirits for the next week.

Interesting to learn about how others view this song. I always thought that this was an intensely emotional song about a working man dealing with a hard life. The driving "I get knocked down, but I get up again. Ain't nobody gonna keep me down." represents him dealing with hardships and setbacks with nothing more than simple determination. His only comfort being a drink at the end of the day, and then sleeping the night away.

The part about the trumpets used near the end of the song was some amazing bit of insight, I could never put my finger on where I had heard it before. "Only the Brits can sing pissing the night away with such beauty..." how right you are! lol.

Fun Fact: Tubthumping came out when I was in high school and I was hooked, that Album is how I became a fan. Now, I say that to say this, when I was 6 just 10 years earlier my mom played the wax out of an album called "Never Mind The Ballots" and it was ok but it was way above my paygrade it was nothing like anything else she'd play it was super jarring for tiny me. Skip ahead another 10 years I finally have access to this wonderful internet machine and I find out Never Mind The Ballots, and Tubthumping are both from the same band... Mind Blown.

I remember some MTV show (don't remember the exact name now) back when I was in college I was watching at the time and they said, "This is the song you all chose to listen to next so here is Chumbawamba, Tubthumping!!" I had never heard it before as it was a NEW release special for MTV before it really hit their rotation of music videos. I kid you not, within the next few days, it was EVERYWHERE! Radio, MTV, VH1, etc. To this day, I hear this song and think "I saw the origin of this song!!!!" And it's as cool today as it was back in 1997. Love the reaction and interesting facts!

Summer 1997, my first archaeological excavation. Lots of hard work, high heat (35C some days). Fridays were lab days and we would process the artefacts from the week. The radio was always on to make the day go faster and this song was inevitably there. We would hit the pub at the end of the week to celebrate our hard work. Good times!

It's not "I get knocked down", it's "I - Get - Knocked - Down", the first phoneme of each word (even the I ha) is HARD and enunciated on its own, and this is very contrasting to the entire rest of the song where everything flows together. It really makes the line stand out and really makes it powerful and draws you in, and that's why it's one of the best single lines to get you into a song there is.
