If your mower doesn't have a fuel cutoff valve, BUY ONE NOW. About $5 or as part of a tune-up kit. My Club Cadet's carburetor float valve stuck and it filled my engine with gasoline. Really poor engineering that the only thing between gravity and the crankcase is NOTHING. A fuel cutoff is turned on before starting and closed to turn off the mower. I first noticed that my fuel tank was empty and the mower would not turn over. The piston was hydro-locked. I took out both spark plugs and the cylinder on the left squirted out a full loads of fuel. The carb was full of fuel over the choke plate. Since then, I bought a new starter, air & oil filter, 5 gal 10W-30, fuel pump, fuel cutoff, and fuel filter. After I drained the oil/fuel, I changed the filter and then refilled the crankcase. I ran the system to circulate new oil and had some smoke on initial startup. I ran it for about 30 minutes and heard a high pitch constant frequency whine/squeak. I let it sit to cool a bit. I rechecked the oil level and it was perfect but l and smelled a little fuel yet so I drained the new 2 quarts out and replaced it. My hunch is that the system is still circulating new oil but the sound I heard could also be some rust from being out overnight during a downpour with the hood off. At this point, I'm going to do research to see if there's anything that could be affected by the fuel event and talk to a Cub Cadet rep. I need to see if there's any manifold leaks or anything under the flywheel that could be causing the sound. There is no odd vibration. The motor has full power. The engine starts immediately. I'm trying to look for horses not zebra's but I've never had a mower or any other vehicle do this in my 40 year combustion engine life. A 50¢ needle valve that causes engine damage?
Wow, thanks for the warning. I'll put a simple shut off valve in near the tank. It would be better for storage to turn off the shut off and run the bowl empty. My guess is on the initial startup the smoke is from gas dissolving the oil on the inside of the cylinder causing the smoke. On the whine/squeak, could it be from the new fuel pump? Noises can be hard to pinpoint, you might try a mechanic's stethoscope. That can be as simple as a dowel rod or they actually make a special one for this purpose. Sorry I cant offer more help, good luck.

John Deere mowers have a filter that is precharged with oil, so all you have to do change the filter and oil at the same time. Yah it cost $40 bucks for an oil change. I don’t think so.
Kohler actually sells a few viscosities for this engine under their name. They have a 10w30 semi-synthetic. Not all are standard size, only specific filters are interchangeable. I've run the mower since new with the cheaper auto filters for about four years with no ill effects.
Has it caused any motor problems not using the Kohler filter? I have the same mower and want to try a different one. They are $16 now here in Michigan. Robbers. Which one do you recommend now. Thanks
I appreciate your video! Question for you. I have a new CC XT1 46 (same as yours), when I do my first oil change at 5 hours, should I continue using conventional until the 50 hour change (as noted on Kohlers website as a best practice for engine break in)? Also, do you think 10w 30 high mileage synthetic is a good idea with the extra detergents and conditioners in it? Thanks!
First change was recommended to me at 15 hours. Then next would be every 50 hours after that. I have gone a little over the 15 hours. My oil looks and feels fine but am going to change it anyway.
Quick amateur question, is it necessary to soak the oil filter in oil prior to installation or is running the oil through it sufficient? Thank you in advance!
Are you putting your funnel in the dipstick tube? If so my oil is VERY low on my XT1 can I add some oil in there before running the mower for the oil change? Thanks for any replies.
How were you able to start it without sitting in the seat and holding the brake down? I have to do that and wrap my other leg around my head before it will start 😆😆
Yes Defan is correct. There is a parking brake lock in the center under the steering wheel. Push the brake all the way down and you set the brake lock with your hand. Then you can start it up normally. Also make sure the blade is not engaged or it wont start.

It’s the yellow piece with black cap if you don’t have a drain hose
How do you stop the engine rattle I hear it when you started yours up
I think it was just the camera mic because I didn't hear it when I was standing near it. Thanks for asking.
Thanks!
Yes follow the mfg. recommendations until it's broken in. It would be okay to run the high mileage oil but it's not necessary.
First change was recommended to me at 15 hours. Then next would be every 50 hours after that.
I have gone a little over the 15 hours. My oil looks and feels fine but am going to change it anyway.
@@TheHandsOnChannel High mileage oil will be thicker viscosity wise.
Put aluminum foil under the oil filter before you remove it. Keeps oil off frame.
15w40 or 10w30,thanks
Your right about the oil filters lol . If people only knew
Did the fram filter have the right clearance did u have any issues? Gd video I have the same cadet. It’s ready for the first oil change ...
No clearance issues on the fram although I prefer the supertech.
Great vid. Did that filter hit when you turned the wheel all the way?
Not the one I installed in the video. It cleared just fine.
do you have an issue with your steering arm denting the oil filter??
The first filter I put on rubbed the arm but the fram didn't.
change gas filter often also gas is dirty stuff these days grease all fittings and spray pedals with dry lube
Thank you bro tha help me a lot
Any time
Changing oil on a club cadet with a 23 hp koler
great video, thanku
Glad you liked it
Thanks for video!
You're welcome.
Quick amateur question, is it necessary to soak the oil filter in oil prior to installation or is running the oil through it sufficient? Thank you in advance!
You don't have to soak/fill the filter with oil but wet the seal with oil before you screw it on.
@@TheHandsOnChannel Thanks!
Sometimes cheap isn't cheap if you save $6 on a filter and damage a motor costing $1000, but everyone has their priorities.
I'm just about to make a 5 year review on this machine. Still going strong and I've saved a lot of money. To each his own.
Where do you dispose of the old oil?
I take it to local auto parts store for recycling.
Are you putting your funnel in the dipstick tube? If so my oil is VERY low on my XT1 can I add some oil in there before running the mower for the oil change? Thanks for any replies.
Yes and yes
How were you able to start it without sitting in the seat and holding the brake down? I have to do that and wrap my other leg around my head before it will start 😆😆
Use the brake lock and you don't have to be sitting on it. What type of mower do you have? ruclips.net/video/cVAeInmPi2g/видео.html
Yes Defan is correct. There is a parking brake lock in the center under the steering wheel. Push the brake all the way down and you set the brake lock with your hand. Then you can start it up normally. Also make sure the blade is not engaged or it wont start.
@@TheHandsOnChannel Getting that deck off to check it and the blades does not look like fun with the manual PTO. Also, can you show where the fittings for greasing are and how does one change the transmission fluid or do you not do that these days? Thanks for the great video!
@@defan2105 You're welcome bud. I haven't removed the deck yet. I think next winter I'll take it off and check the spindles. I actually did a video on greasing the cub. ruclips.net/video/KnST2szcyqA/видео.html As for the transmission IDK if they are serviceable. No troubles with mine so far though.

🤙🏾
You get what you pay for. Pay $30.00 for a filter, get a substandard product.
Mine is still working fine after 6 years of using the cheap filter.
I'd like to have one of those soon as they go back to $1,500 about what they're worth
There's being Frugal, and then there's ruining your machine with a freaking Fram filters. Fram filters are the absolute worst. If you've ever seen a breakdown comparison you would never buy another one
You drain the oil, change the filter, you put some new oil back in it. It's not rocket science
Lol snarky
