Not necessarily!!!! It depends on how he obtained those comics?!!!! My dad bought them at 10 cents each!! And I bought mine at 15,20,35, etc,. To today!! I guess U can say I'm lucky to keep my dad's and mine in nice condition!!! It's not people like me that paid big money, It's smart rich collector's that created a demand for the ART of beautiful stories and covers!!! I could write a book about COMIC'S But I think U got the picture!!!!! 🤔🤗👍
Perhaps not a good investment, but as hobbies go, potentially cost neutral, cheap or a bit of an earner. Lots of other hobbies (e.g., following your local football team, golfing, crafting) just cost money. Plus, we have a lot of fun! :)
your thoughts and insights on the comic book community is very admirable. i started collecting over a year ago and i strongly agree with everything you said. i'm only collecting what i believe are possible investments now. when i started, i bought almost anything i thought was cool.. and this was during the boom lol. i regret a lot now since im just here with over 20 longboxes of comics lol.
Thanks, appreciate it! And yeah, been there done that. Bought what I thought was cool/popular instead of stuff I really wanted and ended up with quantity over quality 😆 Thanks for watching and sharing your experience!
I think it depends on the comic. For example, do you think, let's say a 9.8 Superman 75 first print, would be worth more or the same 30 years from now? That's the question. If you answer that with a definitive answer, I think we have our answer.
You do make a good point that different comics will perform differently, and I absolutely agree. I would say though that just because the value of a comic goes up over time doesn't necessarily mean it's a good investment For example it may go up, but not as much as inflation, so in that case it would be an investment that lost money. Or if you bought a different asset, it may have gone up more or paid you along the way, meaning the comic didn't perform as well as other investments you could have made In my mind this means even though it did go up doesn't necessarily mean it was a great investment. Hope that makes sense Thanks for watching and for contributing to the discussion, I think it's a question valuable for everyone in the hobby
As you stated, hold all your books for the next 20-30 years, look at their values then, and then try to tell yourself that comics are still not a good investment. I bought a Batman 121 (4.0 purple) for $40 in 1994. I bought a Batman 181 (4.0 blue) for $30 in 1993. I bought a Hulk 181 (6.0 blue) for $200 in 2000. I bought a GSX 1 (6.5 blue) for $200 in 2004. All of those, plus too many more to list, have outperformed both the S&P 500 and gold since those times, and I still own them. If you're looking to flip in the short term, yes, comics can be a bad investment; if you're looking to hold long term, comics can be an exceptional (and fun) investment.

All good points. Comic Books are a little bit of a different beast when comparing them to Stamps. Comic Books represent art and pop culture. For example, Superman will always be around. And if a movie flops an iconic cover will never die out either. Finally, I think there's that chance of group of creators/writers making a next big hit. Currently, the only comic books I can recommend today are from the Energon-Verse. The mainstream is horrible. They're thinking the political message can excuse the lack of a good story. However, overall, would I recommend comic books as an investment? No, because I think you hit every point there is to make about the risks to it.
Appreciate it! And yeah, I agree, I definitely think comics have a lot more staying power than stamps because of the culture aspect, that's a great point you make I also hadn't really considered the next big hit, just because I agree with you I'm not impressed with the storytelling in the mainstream right now, but that's just me Thanks for watching and contributing to the conversation, really appreciate it!

That's great to hear, glad you've been doing well! I don't blame you, books were all over the place during that time 57 years collecting, congrats! Do you mind me asking the favorite book in your collection?
🎉 Frankly, anyone with an ounce of financial literacy (and is being honest with themselves) already knows that investing in comics is higher risk as an alternative asset class and should only be a small % of an individual’s overall investment portfolio (similar to real estate or crypto, e.g.). Most people would be better off (particularly in today’s market) putting their money in a S&P index fund than comics. Certain savvy comic investors can make money if their investing is done right. But I think for most ‘investors’, the rate of return on their comic collection is less important than the enjoyment of collecting (the nostalgic value) and being part of the comic community. At least it is for me.
Comic books may not be a good investment but the memory of them will last forever. ( I also think it would be cool if you featured an X-men comic in one of your videos)
100%, the memories will always be there. And I agree, yes, I'll definitely showcase X-Men books for sure. What are your favorite X-Men comics? Thanks for watching!

35? Thats about 10-15 more than ai thought. My collection is completely PC. I wont sell most of it unless I find out I'm dying. Makes things easier knowing barring anything outside my control, ill have them till I die.
I agree, I'm the same way. Hold onto the PC as long as possible. And yeah, people tell me all the time I look young for my age, I'll take it while I can! 😆 Thanks for watching and for your comment!
@@boombaman31 turtles are actually the reason I started collecting comics, love them. Good luck on your hunt for a first print, hope you're able to get one someday!
See I just buy cheaper stuff that no one else wants so that way I can always get what I want like Barbarian Women #2. No I do not in good faith reccomend looking that up.
The short answer is NO and its actually a dying market when compared to other collectible. If you have money to burn / throw at, maybe it can be a "possible" investment, but it wouldn't be your primary investment, rather as a 3rd/4th option as a "diverse" portfolio. If you have money to burn or throw at, it would be the Silver/Golden age. Coming from a person who has collected since 2011 (New 52) as an adult. Prior before 2011, the comic hobby was relatively cheap and less competitive. Another issue with comic is it is less fluid meaning you can't really sell it off for a FMV like you can with a stock or house. By the way, Is that a 1st print on that TMNT #1 by Mirage?
100% agree, it's definitely not a primary investment but a small portion of an overall portfolio. And yeah, the place to be is silver and golden age keys imo Agree with the liquidity aspect too. And no, the TMNT is 3rd print unfortunately. Some day hopefully I'll upgrade! 😆
Well when you're buying the junk you have one the wall, of course you're not getting any ROI on them. Bitcoin and Artwork doesn't produce revenue, does that mean they are bad investments? Of course not, they are long term holds over time.
Thanks for the comment! We'll have to agree to disagree that my comics are junk 😆 And I agree, revenue production isn't the only indicator of whether an investment is good or bad, which is why I made several other points why comics haven't been a great investment for me However I would argue that investments that do produce revenue have an advantage over those that do not. And though artwork and Bitcoin may not be bad investments because they don't produce revenue, it doesn't automatically make them good The point I tried to make in the video is that in my experience comics aren't great investments in comparison to other assets, not so much on whether they are investments in a vacuum
@@momoonocollects they haven't been good for you cause you're buying the wrong stuff, ASM 129 and restored books aren't good investments, best book you shown was detective 140. The stuff on the wall is common stuff. Comics are volatile and if aren't making any money off of them, you're doing it wrong. Real estate is a good investment however, if the tenant doesn't pay the rent, it becomes a liability. Comics are a 20 year buy and hold investment
Offt, I take it you're buying AC #1, Batman #1, AF #15, IH #1 etc. You must be a "real collector" 😂.. Sounds like you'd only buy comics for resale value, rather than what you like! Plenty people buy and sell collections and make more money PA and have less ball ache than renting out properties. The only real gain is when you sell the property (if the market is good that is) If that's what he wants then so be it! What he owns doesn't take away from the points being made. All these big scarce books weren't always that!
@@User8vfjhejf yeah, we're going to have to agree to disagree. I buy big first appearance keys, mainly golden and silver age. That's not junk, common or bad buys. Like the detective comics 140 or detective comics 58 or the sensation comics 6 or avengers 1 or ASM 3 etc etc But even if you were right, the points I made remain the same, they aren't great investments because they don't produce passive income, they are more risky (as you even stated, more volatile), the high costs for the book when you buy, sell, and upkeep, the opportunity cost of them not producing revenue and the opportunity cost of the time spent to research, acquire, and sell the books, I could go on And you must be the luckiest person alive to only sell your comics for a gain 100% of the time. I'm happy for you that you've done that, but that doesn't mean they were a good investment even if you did. And it doesn't mean you're doing it wrong if you haven't always profited from comics. Nobody ever gets it 100% right. As you said, comics are volatile And even if you held for 20 years and you made a profit after factoring in the fees/taxes you paid to buy it, the cost to maintain and store it, the fees and capital gains taxes you paid when you sold it, that again doesn't mean you made money. You first had to beat inflation. Even if you did that, you have to factor in opportunity cost. Did it perform better than another investment you could have made? And they answer to that is most likely no. So you still lost That's my perspective on it, obviously you're free to disagree. In this case, we both get to decide for ourselves what a good investment is or not. I'd ask you to refrain from insulting my comics though, as that's not respectful, constructive, or true Thanks for watching and for the discussion
@@NobodyI991 thanks, appreciate the support! And I agree 100%, the books I own don't negate the points I made. To me they're true regardless of the comic
If you're just going to hang comics on your wall to look at the cover only, why not print out a hi-res cover from online (they're ALL on there), and hang that up instead? FOR FREE!!
@@momoonocollects You can't read them when they're a slab though. I just don't see the point of buying a comic you're going to have in a slab forever when all you can see is the cover. To each his own though.
@@DocReasonable I get that. You can also read them digitally, I haven't found a great platform for that yet though. To me it's the joy of owning it and displaying it like an art piece
@@momoonocollects Yes, I read them digitally on the iPad Pro. Best way to go! I could understand displaying the covers if you had the original art. Just seems odd to have them slabbed if you're never going to sell. Anyway, that's your call and your right.
@@DocReasonable I get that. I think the other benefit of the slab is better preservation. Original art is something I haven't really explored much, but seems to be growing in popularity To me it's harder to price, display (especially in quantity), and protect. Maybe some day 🤷♂️ What app do you like for reading digitally?
Thanks for watching! We'll have to agree to disagree. People lose money or break even on comics for all sorts of reasons that have nothing to do with intelligence I agree it can be done, but even so, doesn't mean it's a great investment. Appreciate the comment!

Also great books. Don't have those yet. I've always wanted a WW 6. It's all about $$$
Thanks! Yeah, I'm a big fan of Wonder Woman and Cheetah is such a big character
Ok now I want to sell everything 😅😅😅 Can you now do a video on the good side of comic collecting financially? Lol.😊
No, don't do that! 😆 Don't worry, I love comic books and will be making a lot of positive videos
Collecting has honestly been the best hobby I've ever had. Stay tuned for the bright side! 😃

Thanks for watching and for your comment!
Awesome video.
Thanks, appreciate the support!
If you were buying in the 1960s and 1970s and even the early 1980s then they were fantastic investments. But that ship has sailed
Yeah, I bet that was definitely a great time to pick up books. What are your favorite buys from that time frame?
Is that a tmnt 1 first print behind you?
I wish...3rd print. Someday! 😆 You a big turtles fan?
@@momoonocollects yes I am. Hopefully I can own a first print one day too lol
@@boombaman31 turtles are actually the reason I started collecting comics, love them. Good luck on your hunt for a first print, hope you're able to get one someday!
@@momoonocollects thank you! 🙏🏼
See I just buy cheaper stuff that no one else wants so that way I can always get what I want like Barbarian Women #2. No I do not in good faith reccomend looking that up.
😆 not a bad strategy...
And yeah, the place to be is silver and golden age keys imo
Agree with the liquidity aspect too. And no, the TMNT is 3rd print unfortunately. Some day hopefully I'll upgrade! 😆
What about taxes, selling fees, and shipping?
@@DanSchawbel yeah, definitely have to factor those in. They weigh heavily on comics and is one of the reasons I don't think they're great investments
Well when you're buying the junk you have one the wall, of course you're not getting any ROI on them. Bitcoin and Artwork doesn't produce revenue, does that mean they are bad investments? Of course not, they are long term holds over time.
Thanks for the comment! We'll have to agree to disagree that my comics are junk 😆
And I agree, revenue production isn't the only indicator of whether an investment is good or bad, which is why I made several other points why comics haven't been a great investment for me
However I would argue that investments that do produce revenue have an advantage over those that do not. And though artwork and Bitcoin may not be bad investments because they don't produce revenue, it doesn't automatically make them good
The point I tried to make in the video is that in my experience comics aren't great investments in comparison to other assets, not so much on whether they are investments in a vacuum
The only real gain is when you sell the property (if the market is good that is)
If that's what he wants then so be it! What he owns doesn't take away from the points being made.
All these big scarce books weren't always that!
@@User8vfjhejf yeah, we're going to have to agree to disagree. I buy big first appearance keys, mainly golden and silver age. That's not junk, common or bad buys. Like the detective comics 140 or detective comics 58 or the sensation comics 6 or avengers 1 or ASM 3 etc etc
But even if you were right, the points I made remain the same, they aren't great investments because they don't produce passive income, they are more risky (as you even stated, more volatile), the high costs for the book when you buy, sell, and upkeep, the opportunity cost of them not producing revenue and the opportunity cost of the time spent to research, acquire, and sell the books, I could go on
And you must be the luckiest person alive to only sell your comics for a gain 100% of the time. I'm happy for you that you've done that, but that doesn't mean they were a good investment even if you did. And it doesn't mean you're doing it wrong if you haven't always profited from comics. Nobody ever gets it 100% right. As you said, comics are volatile
And even if you held for 20 years and you made a profit after factoring in the fees/taxes you paid to buy it, the cost to maintain and store it, the fees and capital gains taxes you paid when you sold it, that again doesn't mean you made money. You first had to beat inflation. Even if you did that, you have to factor in opportunity cost. Did it perform better than another investment you could have made? And they answer to that is most likely no. So you still lost
That's my perspective on it, obviously you're free to disagree. In this case, we both get to decide for ourselves what a good investment is or not. I'd ask you to refrain from insulting my comics though, as that's not respectful, constructive, or true
Thanks for watching and for the discussion
@@NobodyI991 thanks, appreciate the support! And I agree 100%, the books I own don't negate the points I made. To me they're true regardless of the comic
Excellent video!

If you're just going to hang comics on your wall to look at the cover only, why not print out a hi-res cover from online (they're ALL on there), and hang that up instead? FOR FREE!!
I read comics too. Don't think there's anything wrong with spending money on things we enjoy.
Thanks for watching and for the comment!
Original art is something I haven't really explored much, but seems to be growing in popularity
To me it's harder to price, display (especially in quantity), and protect. Maybe some day 🤷♂️
What app do you like for reading digitally?
I've made lots of . Money. On comic book's, you're an idiot if U don't know how to.make Money on comic books!! 🤔🤗
