For me, the best places to buys comics from 1983 to 2003ish were garage sales. I am blessed and lucky to have picked up major high grade grails throughout the years for dirt cheap for reasons unbeknownst to me. The hobby does pay for itself and in my case it did and then some. Great content and video. thumbs up!!
I never thought about checking out antiques stores or goodwill for comics....i will def keep that in mind. I'm glad you made this video Reg, appreciate ya.
Down here in Texas, there's a large used book reseller called Half Price Books that carry comics (Dallas headquarters has a huge case of books). Its my go to for finding fillers, unique books, keys and gems. I've gotten lucky and found Amazing Spider-Man 4 (first Silk) for $2, had it cleaned and pressed, sent to CGC and it came back a 9.8. There is also a used video reseller chain called Movie Trading Company that has also been carrying used comics. Just throwin that out there for any collectors in the south. 😉 Great video Regie.
100% agree on antique stores; you just need to be willing to claw through the mountains of '90's fluff in order to find anything worthwhile. Also, garage/yard sales, especially if the sale is advertised as having comics.
Online auctions were a great resource for me at one point. I had to cut myself off for the reason you mentioned. I would get caught up in the excitement of bidding wars and my rational brain would often go on a coffee break.
Local shows and LCS when they have sales is where I get most of my books. Was in the auction game for awhile, but found it addicting - then my favorite auction house closed - so I guess I went cold turkey and haven't done an auction in a few months.
Yes! Your advice on cons is spot on! I have a friend who walks the entire showroom and on the last day he goes in to buy. He always gets what he's looking for.
An auction house in the UK just sent me a link for an auction. The buyer’s premium was 27%, plus shipping. When you factor in the exchange rate, it gets scary. 🤣😂
Brother, I think you need to specify geographic location when you talk about thrift stores, pawn shops & Goodwill. Because in my 30 plus years of experience going to these places in in East Tennessee I have yet to find comic books! Now I found video games, movies, music, tools and stuff like that but never comic books sadly.
He specifies in the first few minutes that he doesn't know what area you're in or what part of the country you're from so some of these may be hit or miss...
I love my lcs, but it’s super traditional, they barely order any books every week, it’s super messy, no graded stuff, everything is overpriced, and they get nothing good in. But it’s all I’ve got near me unfortunately.
Auctions is like catnip, you just have to have some discipline when bidding and factor in the fees in the total spend. I've been very successful getting deals on ebay, i just stick to my ceiling and never bid past that.
Not sure that I said the buyer has fees. I may have stated that the seller rolls the fees into the cost of the book which is why eBay books will be offered for a few bucks more. Still a great way to go for some.
Is this particularly geared towards new/newer books? The issues I run into is I find plenty of comics in my area but none that are worth anything or that I want for my collection. I would prefer to avoid eBay but what if others places simply don’t have the book(s) your are looking for? Not even your LCS.
Problem with antique stores and flea markets and such, at least in my opinion, is that as often as not there’ll be a long box of $0.25 comics with a $5 sticker on each and every one. I’m like, lol, not today Satan. I mean, if you are well versed in keys and such, maybe you could find some gold in there, who knows. But if you are unknowledgeable about keys, or don’t care about them, this is the worst place to buy comics.
imo if u gonna buy big books or graded books, the only place to buy in this current environment is Ebay! It has the best buyers protection. if book doesn't match the grade or u just dont plane want it, ebay will make that return happen. thats the truth. buying from dealers and the lcs, is too risky and honestly most of them are too slimy. wit ebay, u want it u keep it, otherwise, send it back - no crying needed. ebay rules!
I'll add this, for any comicbook collector that comes in contact with women often. Women are a great source of comics. A lot of times they have comics they're ex left and usually they want to get rid of them most will actually give them away to you for free, some will want money not knowing how much they worth. Just ask hey you got comicbooks you want to get rid of, you be surprised what some will offer., i got a lot of great comicbooks thru women.......that's my tip...lol
Facts facts facts. The kids left comics. She got them in the divorce. He pasted away and left them. Blah blah blah. I have seen this first hand repeatedly.
Thanks for the video brother 👊🏻 Great job summarizing all the various methods people use. I even learned a few spots, and I gotta be honest, I wasn't expecting that.
Appreciate you giving me a heads up that folks were on the lookout for content like this. It has been years since I looked at this topic and never did it comprehensively. Hopefully this can be an evergreen piece of content for folks. 🙏🏾👊🏾
Love hit LCS when I travel. Usually buy something just to help local business brick and mortar.
Truth. First thing I do when I travel is search out the LCS.

I never thought about checking out antiques stores or goodwill for comics....i will def keep that in mind. I'm glad you made this video Reg, appreciate ya.

Half Priced has a website where they post up many of the key books. I’ve snagged a few that way. Appreciate you adding to the conversation.

How do you find the garage sales good sir?
Can't say I've ever looked at Goodwill for books. Good to know!
Yes, sir. I’ve hit up several over the years.
As always amazing info Regie!! Love my local LCS! FPP!

Yes, sir. There can be a method to the madness. 🤪
I love my lCS. I like eBay and WhatNot. Your WhatNot was fire 🔥! Looking forward to your next one. ☝️
Estate sales is where i found my big books and online auctions especially overseas..... watch out for buyers premiums
Which overseas online auctions do you recommend?
An auction house in the UK just sent me a link for an auction. The buyer’s premium was 27%, plus shipping. When you factor in the exchange rate, it gets scary. 🤣😂
@@RegieCollects 27% is crazy 🤪

Here in Knoxville TN my go to spot is Nirvana Comics!!
Auctions are all about the art of snipping 😂

Salutation Regie loved the mathematical blackboard as a metaphor.
I just like the math………
there are no fees on eBay auctions for the buyer, also a great way to gets lots of books for low cost per book.

If WhatNot is considered to be one of the best places to buy comics, I’ll scream. 🤬
EDIT: It was barely touched upon. I didn’t scream.
😂🤣 No screaming allowed.
I like antique stores but most of them are so big it takes hours to get through.
Is this particularly geared towards new/newer books? The issues I run into is I find plenty of comics in my area but none that are worth anything or that I want for my collection. The sources referenced in this video cover all ages of books from golden age to the preset. Fillers to major keys.
old book stores
The answer is 14, the equation on the blackboard .....
🤣😂 I knew someone would solve it.

Just download the Key Collector app and you’re an expert. lol.
If u live in Michigan big bens is the best option
Average comic seller thought process: I see these sell for $100 all day...maybe I could get $500 for mine.
Sell it all , 😂except the icons or waht you truly love
What do you use to hang your slabs behind you in your videos? I am trying to find a good solution to display mine

You can’t just walk into the store anymore and buy comic books?
Huh? Why can’t you?
