As for the maples not changing color, your nights may not have reached cold enough temps. Just like hydrangeas I think they turn more vivid colors with colder temps.

I had a problem with my Autumn Blaze Maple not turning red, and found out that the tree needs to under go a stress period of less water and less fertilizer. SO this year I cut back on water and did not fertilize, and sure enough it is now turning red for the first time ever. So just bear that in mind. :)

From a Canadian (we oooze Maple everything 😂) I am from Cape Breton Island. Nova Scotia, and we are very well known for our fall colours...from my experience, the trees do not start their colour change until after a first frost, like a shock to their system. I have always thought Fall colours is the most beautiful representation of the passing of the 🍃 leave's life span.... ❤

Usually the fall colours are caused by a combination of shorter days and cooler temperatures. So if you're not getting the cooler temps, that may affect the chlorophyll breaking down which is what happens allowing the other pigments to show their colours.

Aaron and Laura ...you both are funny, and so enjoyable to listen to.
I do have a note. When you were speaking about over wintering geraniums, I save mine every year here in Minnesota by cutting them back, digging up, shaking the dirt off and throwing them in a paper bag or cardboard box. I store them under my basement stairs where it is dark, cool ( 45- 50 degrees), and good air flow. I pot them up in late winter under grow lights and by the time spring planting is here they are blooming away and ready to plant outside. They get bigger and more beautiful every year. I am with you. They are easy, forgiving, and so beautiful....and they are at no cost.

Also, compost decomposes, unlike soil, so if you add it to the actual planting hole, the tree/plant will sink. It's best to just add compost to the top and replenish as necessary. Tree color can largely depend on the weather, rather than how it is cared for.

I’ve lived here almost my entire life and I have never experienced color like we have this year. The intensity of the color is something to behold. Northern Wisconsin here as well. The maples are breathtaking near me. Even my oaks are a very pretty orange right now, which is unusual as usually my oaks skip orange and go straight from green to brown in the fall. I still have lots of actual flowers too - when I look outside, I see pink roses, zinnias, petunias, agastache and anemone, with the orange trees in the background. Usually all my flowers are done by now so this is unusual but very welcome! 🙂

I think I remember reading the colors happen when a freeze occurs before the plant, like a maple, has drained its starch from the leaf. The more starch left the more intense the color. When a winter freeze takes longer to occur, like usually in more southern areas, the plants have time to drain the starch, so none of those beautiful red and orange colors, even when the frost or freeze finally occurs.

To cover that electrical box, you could wrap it! Probably even with an image of the SAME brick! (Think automotive wrap, where entire color change wraps on a car, or when delivery trucks/buses wrap the sides). The vinyl wraps are very weather resistant, and especially if you plant around it you would never know it was there. In our area, the large electrical boxes on street corners are wrapped with beautiful imagery of local parks and views.

For the "Whimsy line" you want, this is what I've done: Make a distinct line between lawn and 'whimsy flower bed' but then in that border of bed and lawn plant various grasses that you let grow up, then you get that look of 'loose' but the planted grasses stay more 'clumps' than a lawn that spreads :)

I have never lived anywhere that azaleas, rhododendrons, or blue hydrangeas would grow. But I had a friend when I lived in Boise who had a rhododendron (bright pink one) on the side of her house that was huge, happy and loved its life. It was protected just right and must have been in a rare pocket of acid soil where it was. I would go take pictures of it because it was such a “unicorn” there. I loved visiting the Oregon coast during the time azaleas and rhododendrons bloomed. It was spectacular!

My husband's uncle lives near Seattle. I visited him once in late winter/early spring, and I was fascinated with the huge bush and asked what it was.
Rhododendron was his answer. They were at least ten feet tall and I don't even know how wide.
I've never been so jealous. (I live in eastern Washington and we're dry like where Laura lives, so they'd probably never survive without a huge amount of help.)

@@dotw2172 they get enormous in the PNW. They grow wild in the forests and when they bloom! Unbelievable. All different colors (except blue). But then there are hydrangeas that are blue!

Let's do the acidic plantings!!! I just started my "Master's Garden" with azaleas. Very small garden compared but inspired by the 13th hole at Augusta National Golf Club I've had to do some things to get the soil acidity up (similar to my blueberries plantings). My vote is in for the azalea garden!

A crazy plant lady I was lucky to know when I was very young told me she put her "zonal" geraniums not seed geraniums in a paper sack and stored them in a dark cool place in her basement. I have some that are 10 years old now. Make sure you take the blooms off before storage. They will have leaves starting to come out when it is time to plant. They don't look so great for the first couple of weeks but you will have large geraniums that would cost you a lot to get that mature. I add some as some of the older ones finally die off. I love doing it. They are like family now. 😁😁

🎨Consider painting the electrical box a solid color close to that of the brick, just so there is less contrast. It would help it merge into the background and would be easy to maintain! Love you guys! You are so important for not only my garden but my mental health! 💚

The word "meadow" came to my mind when you were describing what you wanted the area by your flower shed to look like. For instance, like the wind picking up wild flower seeds and blowing them to your neck of the woods, so to speak. The seeds have traveled from who knows where. Then nature takes over to create a beautiful landscape of wild flowers. We see these natural meadows all along the highways and the hills here in Kansas.

Laura and Aaron, if you are serious about trying Azaleas, I would say to definitely do the PW. They came out with a nice choice of colors and are said to bloom much more often than the older varieties.
ALSO, Gerry & Jenny @ Creekside are now starting to ship select items. And the Azaleas are I believe on their list.

Oh Aaron, I agree that two hours of sun is indeed a shady spot. But you need to see Lisa on Gardeners Workshop give instructions for a 4’ x 8’ cut flower garden! It’s wonderful. Not everyone has enough space for a long row of cut flowers. I appreciate how Lisa encourages those of us desperately longing for cut flowers to just plant a small spot as quickly as possible to grow beautiful things.
Thanks for your comments and ideas. I think you’re great.

My local country garden store in mountains NC had BIO-START expired 2008 and left on shelves until 2022. They removed it once I pointed it out and refused to sell. So, I called Espoma Rep and she stated it DOES expire for root stimulation enzymatic properties, but could still use the expired product to fertilize because those are always active.
