I definitely think the pale king either died to the void, let himself wither away in his own sadness, or both. Also, I like the idea of him dying to the void, because I like the idea of him using void for kingsmoulds, wingmoulds, and of course, the vessels...only for it to eventually come back to bite him.

I like that idea too, but we have to consider the circumstances at which we find the throne room, all the king's guards are dead upon arrival and they are not even facing the king, which leads me to believe they were defending him. Also the white palace is not even there in the real world, it is trapped in a dream, which might be a hint pointing towards radiance. My theory is that radiance was able to kill the pale king and send his whole palace to the dream realm so that he wouldn't be able to use void. The message "No cost too great" might be referring to himself sacrificing so the rest could seal radiance within hollow knight.

@@wlodolw About the white palace being trapped a dream makes me come to the conclusion that the pale king decided to use a kingsmould as a vessel...for himself, sealing himself away inside of said kingsmould.

While I like the idea of the Pale King dying from the Void, we have to consider the condition of his corpse. Usually when characters in Hollow Knight die by the void, their eye sockets are leaking void. This is something that is missing in the Pale King's corpse. It's clear that the void did invade the white palace. However, I believe the Pale King died of heart break before the void could get to him. The weight of the Pale King's failure to save his kingdom, the regret of his callous destruction of so many of his children, the sadness that the vessel he loved fell to the radiance by his own design, and so many other things culminated in the Pale King dying from his own sadness.
The void could have responded to the regret the Pale King felt, but it's possible that the void could have also invaded the white palace in response to the Pale King's death. There would be nothing to oppose the void swallowing up the light of the White Palace with the Pale King dead, so it would be the best time for the Void to invade.

despite having very few physical appearances in the game, the pale king looms over the entire game and i find that storytelling achievement very fascinating!

According to the Godseeker, the Pale King wasnt just killed, he was erased.
I can interpret that as being three things.
The first, and most likely, is that much like we do to the Radiance later on, the Pale King was consumed by the void and became no more.
If this is the case, then i have to wonder why his influence has not faded in Hallownest like the Radiance did. Beings who enter Hallownest still obtain that gift of mind and lose it when leaving if they aren't part God like Hornet is.
The second idea that occurs to me is that maybe the King is "erased" because he's no longer the King anymore, having abandoned his body and became something else. i don't really find the idea likely as Team Cherry is pretty good on hinting this stuff.
The third idea is maybe its some sort of trick or act. Maybe he's hidden himself so well in some corner of the world that Godseeker (or us for that matter) literally cannot locate him.
While it's likely the first option, the second and third definitely feel like something the Pale King would do. He's not noble or selfless enough to go down with the ship, so it makes sense he would try to wyrm himself out of the situation.
