Honestly, I feel like the Hunter may be a void creature, or partially made of void, and originally from Deepnest. The reason why I say this is because A) his body is mostly black, and he has the 6 eyes reminiscent of the void entities like the Shade Lord. B) he said he was raised with siblings, so he can’t be just of the void, so it could be that he started out as a normal dude and came into contact with the void, but instead of it poisoning him, he took it within himself, the dude does have a strong willpower, strong enough to overcome the Radiance. C) he calls himself a beast, which while it could just be him saying ‘I’m an uncivilized creature of a man’, it could also be like Herrah The Beast, a reference to where he comes from. D) this dude knows about Abyss creatures, and we haven’t seen any non-Void/Pale beings down there, so if he were partially void, then he could probably get through there unscathed. This is just my opinion, and I know point B is more conjecture instead of just evidence, I just thought that would clarify more of my thought process.

I have a personal theory about The Hunter, my theory is that he has his origins in Deepnest (An area which would more than certainly breed a hunter mentality) but after travelling throughout Hallownest settled down in Greenpath where the prey is weak. Another theory I'd have is that Greenpath not only had Queens Gardens and Fog Canyon but also had Queens station due to how the foliage resembles Fog Canyon.

    • @monroerobbins7551

Quite the interesting topic! A while back I actually also theorized on the origins of Hallownest's acid, so I'll share my thoughts here: Initially I also thought there must be multiple sources of acid, given how obvious of a source Isma's grove is, however in the end I decided that Unn is probably be the only source. First, the feasibility that all acid originates from the Lake of Unn: You decided that it's weird there is acid in the Fungal Wastes, but I don't find it weird at all. Liquid doesn't only move downwards into the ground, it can move horizontally perfectly fine. Normal real world rivers are proof of that fact. Given that the Lake of Unn seems to be the acid lake with the highest elevation in all of Hallownest, I find it perfectly reasonable that it's the source for all acid in Greenpath, Queen's Garden, Fog Canyon, and Fungal Wastes. The more difficult locations are Royal Waterways and Kingdom's Edge. How can Royal Waterways' acid come from Greenpath when the acid is only to the right of Waterways and the left is full of water? Isma's Grove being a second source seems like a reasonable explanation, but it doesn't explain how some acid lakes got so far up into Kingdom's Edge! Look at the map, there's an acid lake all the way on the height of King's Station, far above the Waterways. So, what's my explanation? Well, you'll first need to consider that Hallownest hasn't always looked the way it does. Back before the Pale King's arrival, neither the City of Tears nor its Waterways existed. Back then they were just empty caves. But long before the Pale King, Unn was already there, ruling over Greenpath, and if she is the source of acid, that has existed just as long. I believe that long ago, there was an underground river through the modern day City of Tears, which carried acid from Fungal Wastes (which had it from Greenpath) all the way into Kingdom's Edge, some of the acid dripping down into what would later be the Royal Waterways. When the Pale King later established his city, the bugs constructing it got rid of any acid left in the city's caves. After that, they started constructing the Waterways. To be able to use the Waterways, they built large pipes and pumps to get rid of all of its acid, transporting it somewhere it wouldn't bother anyone - Isma's Grove. That is why I think there is no acid in the left half of the Waterways, and so much in the right half, and also why there are pumps to remove the acid from Isma's Grove. Isma's Grove functioned as a sort of reservoir, where bugs from the city could pump all acid to. While Isma certainly has an affinity for both plants and acid, I don't think she is a source for it. Rather I think she just shares a connection to it, most likely because she herself was also born of Unn's dream. In fact, you finding her corpse entirely submerged in acid makes me think she might have been drowned in it. Maybe Isma's Tear doesn't just have acid-repelling properties because she is the source of acid, but it has that effect because in her last waking moments, she put all of her power into trying to repel the acid she was submerged in. Unable to save herself, all she could achieve was the creation of her Tear, a manifestation of her desperate pain and regret in her final moments. Given the way charms are often created through immense emotional willpower or the regrets of the deceased, I don't find it unlikely. Anyways, that's just my thoughts and opinions on the matter. Your ideas were really good as well!

Not in depth enough for my taste. Here's my rambling (adapted from Sulfury's work on the subject). This community seems to have a lot of misconceptions and false assumptions about that artifact given how unintuitive its real functioning is. I've seen people say that the Hunter wrote it, that it's carved in stone or something like that, other say that he must have fought everything in it or have a weird omniscience, I've even said some say this thing has no lore because it is entirely gameplay-focused despite being an existing object in-game. All of that is false. Hopefully I made some time ago a giant wall of text explaining all of that based on the work of one named Sulfury. For now it has been condemned to rot on a random Ccmaci community post, this looks like a perfect opportunity to make it actually seen by people. 👀 I don't think that the fact that the Hunter's Journal's functioning is gameplay-focused means that that it has no lore. It''s just not intuitive. In fact it must necessarily be partially unintuitive as we know how small it is so it can't hold all of the informations that it's supposed to if it worked like a stone tablet. Another unintuitive part of its functioning is directly stated in-game when you first talk to the Hunter: "At first the text may seem difficult to discern, but a learned hunter will come to understand its words.", it explains why the entries are unlocked by combating enemies but it doesn't make much sense if you don't think about it to much. ALSO BE PREPARED BECAUSE IT'S A ENORMOUS AND GIGANTIC WALL OF FRICKING *TEXT.* THANK TEAM CHERRY FOR THIS COMPLICATED LORE. So here's how the Hunter's journal likely functions: - *It probes into its user's mind, it's linked to it and adapts to the user's hunting experience.* That explains this previous Hunter quote and is backed up by the fact that entries can be unlocked before you get it, but obviously only those that correspond to what you've already hunted (unless you never killed a Crawlid I guess but that's probably really just a game limitation that's unlikely to be remarked. :^\). It is opposed to the common assumption that it is just written in an undecipherable language that you somehow understand without analysing it but by hunting, which makes no sense. - *Nothing was written in it, it generates its content spontaneously. The Hunter's mind is instilled in it so that it can do that.* That explains how the journal contains entries about creatures the Hunter can't met, and that we know thanks to his comments that he has never met. His comments thus being an accurate reproduction of what he would've felt and thought if he would've seen you hunting. - *It has a very strong sensibility to the spiritual realm, being able to intercept dreams.* Nothing really hard to prove with the quotes from the ghosts and grimm troupe and with the entry got from the Path of Pain's memory. The last points also goes in this direction. - *It is a receiver. An eye perceiving the spiritual world to give a proceeding of what it sees.* It interprets all of its user's sensations when hunting to give pertinent informations about the creatures hunted. Being the relay of the Hunter's thoughts, it sometimes gives the priority to other messages from another source. This explaining the previously mentioned quotes from the ghosts and grimm troupe. From what I've said by now, it can seem like, through his journal, the Hunter has a sort of omniscience that can't really be justified. But there's two things that I think are really just here just because it's a video game: the names of the enemy and most of the time their species, all knowledge is supposed to have been forgotten after the kingdom's fall but it would be weird to not have the enemies' name; the journal is associated with a quest and is associated with a completion goal, talking to the Hunter gives you a hint at where you're at in this completion, like a progression bar, implying that he knows exactly what the journal should contain to be complete, but it's not really the case, they serve only to give the player an idea of their progress in this completion in a purely game-esque manner. A proof of that is simply that the entirety of the entries don't have to be unlocked in order to finish the Hunter's quest, meaning that he can judge the Journal as complete even if it is objectively not. Finally I'll discuss how the magical properties of the journal concretely manifest onto the physical object, so basically, what it looks like. In the game, there's ever only one representation of the Hunter's journal, shown when you get it. It's not useful on its own but it can be compared to other objects in the game: the wanderer's journals. They look similar, meaning that the name "journal" refer to some characteristics. A note found in the game's file list of words and says how they should be used in the game, probably so that Team Cherry can preserve the game's consistency. One of those words is *"book": " <entry name="book">not sure if these exist? Likely not. Journals exist. Tablets exist. Parchment exists. Journals look like they&#39;re made of stone. the relic dealer references parchment made from spider silk, but its not comme.</entry>"* . The Hunter's journal could've simply be an empty book with empty pages that fill up as you progress but there are no no books. Only journals, stone tablets that store informations, with a message on their single face. The Wanderer's journal have this information sculpted, carved or written in them while the Hunter's journal's change. Given its apparence, seemingly covered in a sort of dripping goo, evokes that fact that *the symbols on the Hunter's journal could be moving, sliding, stretching, appearing and disappearing, changing completely to adapt the content of the entries for its user.* It could even display only one article at the time, pretty much like we see it in the game, the symbols rearranging as the entries change. But given its mystical and great powers and properties, there might be another object that it can be compared to... *A stone marked by strange symbols, carrying a message that interacts with the mind of the one that consults it.* That's what this journal is. Does that sound familiar? "Higher beings, these words are for you alone.", the King's, the Wyrm's, lore tablets. In fact, it seems that there's some sort of opposition in the Pale King's lore tablet and the Hunter's journal in their similar functioning as indirect vectors of their authors' voices. To hear the Pale Wyrm's voice, you must be a Higher Being, it's only with this condition, totally independent of your will, that you'll hear his voice resonating in your spirit, imposing on you. The Pale Wyrm bases its communication on the principle of the *Innate Election* (in its theological sense, like a divine election). To read the Hunter's journal, you'll have to deserve it. No predestination, just a submission the dangerous and tedious exercise of the hunt. You will have to understand on your own what it means to be a Hunter to share its mundane remarks as well as its most existential interrogations. The Hunter bases its communication on the principle of the *Acquired Admission* . If the symbols of the Hunter's Journal are indeed moving but still symbols "written" on its face like its appearance suggests, that makes another opposition. The King's voice creeps in the minds, the bugs are forced to ear its messages, while the Hunter's notes still leave the choice to be known or not, adapting to the surrounding spiritual signals. The Pale Wyrm acts symbolically as a *Master* , the one that masters and spreads knowledge, controlling the individuals. The Hunter acts symbolically as a *Novice* , that questions himself and the world while gathering informations by himself to learn and understand. These objects thus reveal by their simple functioning a part of their creators' personalities. This comparison, and especially if it's an opposition, is pretty interesting on its own. Maybe there's more to it. Maybe it can explain how the Hunter is able to make such a powerful and mystical artifact like his journal is. But the weird connections and oppositions between the Pale Wyrm and the Hunter is a totally other rabbit hole that I won't dive into today. 👀 IN CONCLUSION of this long-ass wall of text of a comment about the complicated lore of a minor part of Hollow Knight, *the Hunter's journal is a strange powerful and mystical artifact. It acts as a receiver, an eye perceiving the spiritual world to give a proceeding of what it sees thanks to its strong sensibility to the spiritual realm, probing into its user's mind to adapt to their hunting experience and, with the Hunter's mind is instilled in it, generate with its symbols moving on a sort of goo spontaneously its content: an accurate reproduction of what the Hunter would've felt and thought if he would've seen you hunting, or rarely, something else, a memory intercepted from a dream. For the journal to receive those informations, you will have to endure as a novice the Hunter's admission, and acquire they intimate understanding of what its is to be a true Hunter.*

A lot of it likely has to do with their natural disposition to the radiance or manipulation in general. The pale king, white lady, and radiance are all clearly meant to represent he fact that many real life bugs use light to guide them. I mean they straight up glow. I'm not saying people follow them in hollow knight explicitly because they glow, it's clearly more akin to their power as entities being the main cause(even if other bugs specifically mention the glow). I'm just saying they're obviously supposed to represent a facet of real life bug biology. Anyways, with that said. Not all bugs in real life use the light to guide them. In hollow knights case. Many bugs just have no reason to follow simply because of choice or by their nature. One thing that isn't brought up is that the amount of bugs being affected is likely inflated. Countless bugs that don't follow such entities were definitely killed by corrupted beings resulting in the perception that most creatures got infected when in reality it's probably closer to half or something or other.
