It’s kind of incredible how Overwatch and Breath of the Wild released one year apart, won GOTY in their respective years, and got iterative sequels 6 years later, where the distance between them in quality is so enormously vast.
I read in an interview with Eiji Aonuma that his main inspiration for TOTK was the wacky glitch machines players would make in BOTW, such as the 2 minecarts together turning into a flying machine with magnesis.
Such a legend, bro saw that people were doing crazy stuff with glitches and essentially making vehicles so he made it into a core feature in the sequel. So cool

Dude the dragon tear memories basically ARE the story, you've gotta finish that, the final scene is insane, especially in context if you kind of do things "in order". Totally agree that the end cutscenes for each of the temples was weird though, the same dialogue each time really broke the immersion.
The memories are the story, true, but tbh it's still pretty run of the mill jrpg shit. Nothing about it is really attention grabbing or original, but also I definitely wasn't attracted to botw or totk for the story, so it's not really anything I care about
@@tccfan1I agree ur sentiment but this story isn’t jrpg 😭😭 it’s more akin to western high-fantasy story telling if anything. Like if it was jrpg it would have a ton of absolutely bonkers concepts and mind bending villains and shit (this is a generification but it gets the point across, jrpgs usually have much more complex stories) so calling it “usual jrpg story” is a bit disingenuous
Tears of the kingdom has one of the best endings for a game I’ve seen since god of war, Ragnarok. I was completely prepared to never see Zelda again after I found out about the whole dragon transformation.
Charlie is right about the puzzles. There's times were I solve a shrine and then I have to sit back for a moment and think, "Is that REALLY what was intended?" But unironically that makes it way more fun
I always love finding the sketchiest, most overcomplicated way of solving a shrine and thinking wow i have 0 clue how this was supposed to be solved. Really makes me feel like an idiot savant.
I have definitely gone online to see how other people solved things just because I know building a giant bridge or gliding off a master hand/recall platform was not the intended solution, haha.

wait it has interconnecting side quest!? due to dynamic writing? (notably like in FONV or ER) or.. visual direction "point of interest"? (Dyinglight, Odyssey, Far Cry, etc..)
i know its a small detail but when zelda went to pick up the stone in the beginning, she felt it before actually picking it up to check if it was dangerous, that sort of small attention to detail just really made me like the game more. they didnt have to add it in but they did. what a great game, this is what we get when we let developers take their time making games and not rush them.
@@zanemeyer6006 I've only played 1 temple so far. The intro was easy but there was one harder puzzle. At this point I'm not expecting anything to resemble Stone tower temple or the Spirit temple. Only done goron and rito so far, but I'm a bit upset that the general building material for both temples are the same generic zonai stone. They're definitely more themed than divine beasts but it still feels kiiinda generic. So far they've been pretty easy too which is a little disappointing

I think the fusing system majorly helps a little further into the game in terms of durability. When you get to a point where you have a bunch of really good treasures for fusing, you can make a good weapon out of literal sticks without worrying about it breaking and losing your loot. It takes away major amounts of stress for finding powerful weapons in some small corner of the map.

@@MrStatement I love that they’re still using the Guardian piano motif as a reminder of the danger you’re placing yourself in, but it’s a slightly different melody. Such great music. I remember people were a little put off by the modest music in BotW, but it became more iconic because of how seamless it blended with the environment.
It's amazing how many different ways you can solve some of the puzzles in this game. I watched 6 people play through the starting sky island, and saw 6 different solutions to the hook puzzle.
Yeah, you have probably tens of ways to solve that puzzle alone without even touching the hook. And the more tools you get, more options open up for you
I solved a shrine where I was getting launched with springs, but I couldn’t get to the platforms once in the air because I didn’t have the glider yet. I glued apples under the legs on one side of the springs so it’d launch me at an angle toward the platforms.
For real. Hell, it's so well optimized, on emulators it runs in 60 like butter. When game's only problem is being exclusive on switch, while also being pretty easy GOTY candidate, you know you have amazing game
I agree with u, the plot was very good but I wish they connected it more with the timeline better and explained it in a different way rather than the memories again and the old sages saying the same thing, only complaints I have with it tho
i agree and i think it definitely benefitted from being a sequel so i felt a lot more connected and emotionally attatched to the characters and the world right away as opposed to being introduced to another brand new story like in basically every other zelda game.
well one thing is that this takes place right before skyward sword on the timeline, and its a sequel to botw, all zelda games on the timeline converge to botw and in skyward sword, demise cures everyone to an endless cycle of reincarnation so its all one giant loop
Eh I would have to disagree. The thing that made me not love it was HOW is this connected to Breath of The Wild? Oh my god it drives me crazy - no explanation whatsoever of what happened to the guardians and the divine beasts and it's just so frustrating. How did they not touch on that stuff at all? Unless they're making a third installment and waiting til that game to explain it or something, I don't know. Zelda's story in this was pretty cool, but the whole "there once was an imprisoning war and now Ganon is imprisoned" thing over and over everywhere you go just got so annoying.
For the story i believe the side quests are essential. They are way more fleshed out than botw and make the world more immersive. Ive been doing them all together somewhat getting memories in order and i gotta say its a blast. There are a lot of things I fell are missed without it.
This is honestly one of the best games I've ever played. I've played almost non-stop aside from work and stuff and have only done three story quests. There's so much to do, everything is interesting, it's so stupidly good.
Dude the soundtrack blew me the fuck out of the water. I honestly thought I'd never feel this moved in a new way by a soundtrack ever again, this game definitely has its epic sections. I had high expectations and it exceeded pretty much every single one of them.
I totally agree. I had been playing TOTK on an emulator (I know, shame on me) but I started feeling guilty because the game is so good and I really felt like I was stealing so I went out and got a used OLED and bought the game digitally. Then I hooked up my Bluetooth Focal Bathys headphones and started the game over legitimately and OMG the sound just blew me out of the water. Possibly the best soundtrack I've ever heard in a video game. Even the sound effects were incredible. Nintendo totally deserves all the credit for making this game.
the reason i disagree is because, you arent really using diferent weapons, what you are doing is ignoring them and treating them as stat sticks. they lose all personality. compare it with dark souls, where people will fight to the death to defend their favorite weapon, because, while the diference is slight, its still enough to be unique. even for stuff that is underused like bows or spears. you wont get that with this durability system because weapons stop being worth caring for. you just use what you have and move on. the worst part is how it feels like it punish the player for trying to fight stuff. as you will lose resources for stuff that, most often than not will just be used in the same way. so while i understand it has people who like it, i just vehemently disagree its a good implementation of the system.
I don't love or hate it. I just never saw it as a thing to complain about, especially in TOTK. It is so incredibly forgivable. You are picking up material CONSTANTLY that makes incredible weapons.
@@marcosdheleno while i also am not a fan of the durability system, and i dont like how it trivialise every weapons as just tools to an end (especially when like, weapon like the master sword sitll ''Breaks''..), TOTK helps a lot with the issue of punishing for fighting stuff. I farmed Lynels to upgrade my gear and i got more weapons back than i could hold, i had to throw stuff out to carry them. since you get a weapon + their shield + their bow + their mat loot + a new horn loot, which can all be used as weapon upgrades. instead of just getting one weapon and a bow and shield.
@@marcosdheleno The problem with having no durability system means that the rewards of new weapons become meaningless, as you'll always revert to your OP weapon. I say they should have had special inventory slots that you could bound a weapon to the slot and that would keep it from disappearing once it breaks. -Once enough time has elapsed, the weapon comes back, similar to the Master Sword. -The more attack power it does, the longer it takes to come back (up to a point). -You could probably have up to 3 slots per item type, and they would always be the last 3 slots before you max a specific item category out. -Also, these items come back once if they're out of your inventory for a set period of time (ex. if you've thrown the item or dropped it from taking electrical damage), but will immediately be broken. -Any Zonai devices are not retained and, for all intents and purposes, cannot be bound. Just my idea that I immediately pulled out of my ass, but I'm not a game designer so what do I know.
6:15 what Charlie mentioned here is legitimately the best vehicle in the game. depending on how hard you pull back on the joystick, it's an air, land, or sea vehicle. it's only 2 moving parts so it's incredibly fuel efficient. it's only 3 pieces so it's very material-light. and it's made of such common components that if you want to autobuild it but don't have the parts, it costs barely anything. it's two fans angled slightly, attached to a joystick. experiment with the angle and you'll get it. attatch a Giant Brightbloom to the front for easy Depths exploration. it's an Omni-Vehicle, all-purpose. if you're not using it, start.
One of my favorite moments with basic stuff so far is, I was in the depths and had a skateboard made out of one of the bird gliders and 4 small wheels and the bird platform broke so I just connected the 4 wheels together and made a working skateboard that was just wheels. I just love when something as dumb as that works
So far my favorite thing about this game is the "Can this work?" Aspect of the game. thinking of something and it usually working is truly one of the best feelings in a game
I never thought in my life that I would spend $70 on a game and actually think it's worth it. I usually only spend $1 - $30 on a game. (I mostly game on PC where the games are much cheaper because of constant sales.) But this game is just packed with stuff. Ive never seen a game this loaded with unique sights and activities. Ive played thousands of games and TOTK this is one of the most unique gaming experiences of them all.

I bought the switch just for this game and oh man its such a great game i can't even, what i REALLY love about it is how you are not getting your hand held there no 0 markers showing you what to do you only get general marker indicating where the quest was taken and after that you got to read and talk to people and they will tell you what to do thats awsome for actually soaking the world instead of just looking at the minimap and going from one marker to next
The story I think was still incredibly charming even if not as well written as I'd have hoped. Everything involving the demon king had me on the edge of my seat, not because of incredible dialogue or anything but just the presentation of it is so perfectly executed.
Exactly! I cried when I saw the final cutscene where SPOILERS Princess Zelda ‘wakes up’ from her draconic slumber and falls through the sky. I loved how the pond that you catch Zelda in is the same pool you dived in after the Great Sky Island. @@trombonist-bo6yi I 100% agree with you, and on top of that it felt like something straight from like Studio Ghibli. The ending is on par with the ending of Skyward Sword to me, just from emotional value alone
Yeah the portrayal of Ganondorf in TOTK was probably the best in the franchise, they went the extra mile to make him seem like the biggest threat we've ever faced. I mean shit the opening cutscene is him destroying the Master Sword, it sets the tone for the whole thing right there.

I like that they focused more on giving players freedom to just have fun however they want to have fun. There is so much to do in this game, but you don't even need to do any of it. Just the base mechanics alone are fun enough that you can just use those and go have fun doing whatever the hell you want to without even aknoledging the story. I also really appreciate, that, while it's no masterpiece, they did add a pretty good story with some genuine twists if you go through and collect all the memories to piece it together. I feel like so many games try to restict the player as much as possible these days, but I'm so incredibly relieved to see they did just the opposite, giving us as much freedom as possible while still having real puzzles that take effort and thought and have so many possible solutions. Overall an amazing game.
I agree with just about everything, my only issue with this game is sometimes the sage AI will just kind of go wherever they want when you need them most💀 but otherwise 10/10
until that one time you're trying to collect something and Yunobo or Tulin jumps in front of you, and the thing you wanted to pick up suddenly catches on fire or flies away like 10 feet. The sage AI is certainly annoying.
The Legend of Zelda games (specifically BotW and TotK) are some of the only games that can be 75% random filler content and still make it way better than the vast majority of other games and leave fans wanting more of it lol. The Switch hardware lets them down, definitely, but they're so amazingly and artistically crafted that 99% of the time it's hard to care; you just want to keep playing anyway
I do agree that is annoying how the switch holds back the game graphically and with the performance, but you can't deny that diving from a sky island with beautiful soundtrack while taking a poop has to be one of the most magical experiences.
I think the fuse mechanic is the perfect answer to weapon durability. In BotW, it sucked because if there was a sword you like and it breaks, you’re SOL and have to find another one. But in TotK, as long as you pick up sticks you will always have a good weapon available. Your stone axe broke? Fuse a soldier construct horn to a stick, bam you’ve got a damn good weapon. And of course the stronger the enemy type your monster part comes from, the more damage it does. So you have more incentive to go after higher level monsters instead of avoiding them, knowing that defeating them will give you materials for a damn good weapon. As far as fusing like a rake to your sword or whatever, yeah that stuff can be kind of dumb. But that’s just not where Fuse shines, in terms of practicality. I just love that ability. Another great thing about this game is how interesting the open world feels. I can’t walk to one point of interest without seeing 2 or 3 others that I want to visit along the way. It’s exponential and at times I feel overwhelmed. But it just means I have way more stuff to get to later. I absolutely love this game.
Downside is this reduces the available chest rewards even more because all the best stuff is an enemy drop. So I find there's not much to open chests for... besides arrows lol
It’s an interesting fix to an unnecessary problem. I like that they decided to do something interesting with weapons though, even if most of the unique weapons have been removed as a result. But it still feels like they’re just papering over the fundamental problems with the simplistic combat system with a gimmick. I already didn’t get excited getting fragile weapons from chests so the exploration rewards getting worse don’t affect me personally that much. Exploration was kind of just its own reward in BotW too.
The fact that this game maintains a mostly solid 30 FPS on the switch, is a technological miracle and the devs of this game are actual wizards. The amount of computational complexity going on especially due to the way the different systems interact with each other naturally - and yet the game doesn’t crash or glitch out of control is amazing. Haven’t seen any bugs in my play through so far. Nuff said, probably one of the best games ever made, period.
After learning they had oil in this game (not in BotW) and thinking nothing of the chicken legs as they were being counted as beef for most meals, I experimented and put them together, along with a spicy pepper. No joke my mouth flew agape when I made spicy chicken wings. Like idk why that made me so amazed but it was kind of a moment for me. Love this game
Dude I get the feeling. The whole time in botw I was always thinking "man I really wish they had garlic and tomatoes in this game". When I found oil, the first thing I did was fry chicken lmao.
"TotK is not a $70 DLC" Thank you. So many people stating it is just a DLC do not appreciate how much time and effort went into this game. There is so much more than BotW could offer in this masterpiece. 🥰
There's something I really like about this game over the first one that I don't see many people point out. Now most kinds of weapon have a special property (Royal weapons become more powerful when you flurry rush, Rito weapons produce wind, Zora weapons gain an attack boost when wet). This gives you an actual reason to have more variety of weapons for each situation. Instead, in Botw the Royal weapons were basically the best, only being beaten by Royal Guard weapons in exchange for durability.
In my opinion, the storytelling in the memories really were good. Once I started getting them and piecing together the broader story, it was pretty awesome.
@junnidua6019 nah, the storytelling isnt absolutely incredible by any means, but if you play through the full true ending its also not a weak-point in the game and was pretty enjoyable.
One of my favorite parts about breath of the wild was the freedom to play the game however you want- the fact that you can literally fight the final boss the second you finish the tutorial is so cool and I'm really happy to see you have just as much freedom in this game as well
Let’s go, this game is way better than I could have ever imagined! They looked at the players and what they did in Botw and said, “Fuck it, let’s see what you can do in this game.”
Weapons breaking in this game is alot less annoying than in BOTW, it feels like it takes longer, and you can increase durability by fusing. You still gotta be mindful of what weapons you're using to like break hard objects, that'll wear them down faster, but like a stone hammer will go through many crates and hard rock but you'll lose your spear in short order trying to do the same.
@@bug2744 It fixes itself in 10 minutes, and unless you're going straight from camp to camp, you can get alot of use off of it. I use it largely for the little guys and save the really strong breakable weapons for silvers and bosses, and try to repair them after a blood moon.
@@TheJadeFist It's still the god damn master sword though man. It should perform a LOT better than how it currently does. I am genuinely amazed that the Zelda team was able to stick the landing this well after the litany of developmental difficulties. Breath of the Wild felt like the best video game ever made and this is just better in *almost* every way.
The durability system isnt something i like, but its something i find necessary to keep players in that mindset of wanting to experiment with everything you find in the game.
Honestly, I don't particularly care about the durability. Caring about weapons you have in your pocket is like caring about bullets in a shooter. Sometimes even, I have to drop the weapons I like in single player shooter campaigns because there aren't any bullets around.
@NicholasGregas everything. The game is artistically beautiful. The side quests and characters are all very charming. I've played video games since I was 5 years old. Just from how huge it is alone and how much there is to explore and how much just pops out at you out of nowhere, it’s GOTY. I expected the sky to be huge, but *SPOILER, SERIOUSLY, DON’T DO IT TO YOURSELF* I didn’t expect at all to be able to go underground. And it’s just as huge as the sky and the surface. The Lake Hylia Whirlpool Cave seriously impressed me. I just got done doing 1 of the regional phenomena and it’s just so much fun. Everything about this game, from the enemies to the areas to the weapon builds to the new abilities to the characters themselves, it’s a masterpiece. Just like GOW: Ragnarok, it somehow completely surpasses the one before it almost instantaneously. 10/10. Between this, GOW:R and Elden Ring, you have a good 400 hours of content to explore.

I think the thing that makes me believe TotK is pretty much perfect is that if you aren't big on creative problem-solving and having too much to do, there are still linear ways of beating every challenge the game throws at you, which truly allows ultimate player freedom. You can do the simple, intended thing and have a blast. You can make the stupidest contraption ever that only half-works and forces you to improvise partway through, and it's a blast. No matter what kind of player you are, the game is designed with you in mind. The only real issue I can see people having with the gameplay is its vastness being overwhelming and/or sometimes annoying to traverse. I may be biased, but I genuinely having a hard time seeing people's preferred playstyle clashing with the game in any other way, and that's an incredible feat. Of course, this is coming from someone who's happy with any quality above 360p at 15FPS, so my input may not be the best on that front, haha
The sandbox is honestly the best part of the game for me. I just love doing the dumbest things imaginable and seeing how well they actually work. I’d love to have a purely creative mode where I can waste time building some massive projects without affecting the actual in game resources. The ultrahand stuff reminiscent of the game besiege for me and I love it.

It's an amazing game. The addition of the dungeons really nailed it for me. That's really all that was missing from BoTW. I also find the story if Tears of The Kingdom vastly more involved and interesting. BoTW essentially had no story or very little of it.
I feel like durability is necessary in this game. It encourages experimentation with the fuse mechanic. In the first game it was mostly just a way to have Link find new weapons instead of using the same ones the entire game, but in this game it actually makes sense.
Honestly I don’t mind the durability system in TotK, because there’s so many items and silly combinations I’d like to try, it’s so fun to combine every single possibility and I don’t mind losing a certain weapon because I know I’ll find another one on the way. And the fusion mechanic also fix the problem of storing a lot materials. They now push you to use every single item just for the sake of curiosity.
They capitalized on the durability system immensely by adding many more weapons with the high durability trait, and now with the fusion ability you can make even a 4 damage stick that has high durability do ridiculous damage, depending on what you fuse to it
@@mihaimercenarul7467 Read the comment above this one, it perfectly articulates my point. Written by Vincenzo . The durability system was pretty harsh in BOTW but in TOTK it works well with everything they've done. Fuse zonai spears with construct hearts for extra durability and a WHOLE LOTTA damage. This also encourages you to experiment more to find more efficient fusions. So the durability system feeds into the fusion system which feeds right back into the durability system. It's genius really, I just wish there were more fusion possibilities. You clearly haven't played this game if you're saying it's boring.
I think the coolest thing i’ve come across is skydiving and seeing the Ice Dragon going into one of the Gloom chasms into the depths. I love the durability system. It encourages you to use different weapons and actively change how you play on the fly.
the reason i disagree is because, you arent really using diferent weapons, what you are doing is ignoring them and treating them as stat sticks. they lose all personality.
compare it with dark souls, where people will fight to the death to defend their favorite weapon, because, while the diference is slight, its still enough to be unique. even for stuff that is underused like bows or spears.
you wont get that with this durability system because weapons stop being worth caring for. you just use what you have and move on.
the worst part is how it feels like it punish the player for trying to fight stuff. as you will lose resources for stuff that, most often than not will just be used in the same way.
so while i understand it has people who like it, i just vehemently disagree its a good implementation of the system.
I don't love or hate it. I just never saw it as a thing to complain about, especially in TOTK. It is so incredibly forgivable. You are picking up material CONSTANTLY that makes incredible weapons.

Princess Zelda ‘wakes up’ from her draconic slumber and falls through the sky.
Charlie should definitely get the memories. Watching the cutscenes for them has been one of my favorite parts of the game. I feel like anyone who doesn't watch them is missing out on so much

So I was crossing a cold river once, and suddenly though to myself, what if I throw an ice chu-chu jelly in the water? So I did that not expecting much and HOLY SHIT was I surprised 2 thin layers of ice popped up out of the water and I could cross the river easily. This game is a masterpiece and no one can tell me otherwise
Exceeded all my expectations. Absolutely phenomenal experience
I agree with just about everything, my only issue with this game is sometimes the sage AI will just kind of go wherever they want when you need them most💀 but otherwise 10/10
True!! I had to run far so they can respawn beside link again 🙃
I was fighting phantom ganon and wanted the shield from Sidon but dude was swimming in gloom behind the enemy lines
until that one time you're trying to collect something and Yunobo or Tulin jumps in front of you, and the thing you wanted to pick up suddenly catches on fire or flies away like 10 feet. The sage AI is certainly annoying.
the master sword/light dragon storyline is actually amazing and the most emotional ive felt for a zelda game

I feel the opposite about durability
@@clownform chests occasionally contain very useful items like sage wills or crystallized charges so I still go after them
It’s an interesting fix to an unnecessary problem.
@@clownform Sage Wills are the answer to your issue about chests
It's the same topography, not the same map, and even then they tweak it a fair bit. The way they pulled this off was incredible.

They probably added oil to atract the american marked
Dude I get the feeling. The whole time in botw I was always thinking "man I really wish they had garlic and tomatoes in this game". When I found oil, the first thing I did was fry chicken lmao.
i think the amount of things you can do in the game is so cool and you’re so right about it being completely up to the player on how to solve puzzles.

I think the durability system is close to perfection, much better balanced than in BotW, which is awesome
I ended up using Younobo for breaking large rock walls. They also drop enough broadswords and rocks to make more hammers when yours eventually breaks.
@@bug2744 It fixes itself in 10 minutes, and unless you're going straight from camp to camp, you can get alot of use off of it. I use it largely for the little guys and save the really strong breakable weapons for silvers and bosses, and try to repair them after a blood moon.

The Ultrahand system feels like the pinnacle of open world crafting. It absolutely will be used as an entirely new base floor for years to come, exactly like how minecraft was.

@Falcon2 it does break but just takes ten minutes to recharge and is insanely OP
@Falcon2 I was being hyperbolic dude, relax, everything is going to be OK 👍
Honestly, I don't particularly care about the durability. Caring about weapons you have in your pocket is like caring about bullets in a shooter. Sometimes even, I have to drop the weapons I like in single player shooter campaigns because there aren't any bullets around.

The memories make the story SO much better.
Just from how huge it is alone and how much there is to explore and how much just pops out at you out of nowhere, it’s GOTY. I expected the sky to be huge, but *SPOILER, SERIOUSLY, DON’T DO IT TO YOURSELF*
I didn’t expect at all to be able to go underground.
Got this on relesse day through the eshop and i haven't stopped playing since.
Also quick tip down below
All lightroots in the depths are directly below shrines. So if you are looking for a shrine check the depths and see if you have a blank spot on the surface map where a lightroot is, if you do you've found a shrine.
Very good advice and something I noticed too, help me find a lot of missing shrines so far!
